As usual Wilbur Smith has invited you into a world of wonder. Centaine is a strong willed woman who you will fall in love with and wish to drink up every last word of her thrilling story told through W.S. descriptive adventure.

Whilst he has written better books, The Burning Shore is still a book that compels you to read on and as always the descriptions of the African landscape, people and wildlife are so vivid you can almost touch them. Fans of Wilbur Smith won't be disappointed.

Very interesting book, the whole series is great. It is hard to put this book down. The whole series is excellent, but The Burning Shore is awesome. It is like reading about history, but with personal intrigue.

I had been craving a good historical fiction epic for a long time when my husband brought this book home for me. If you like John Jakes (North and South) or Gone With the Wind, you'll like this compelling story of Centaine de Thiry Courtney's adventures in South Africa. Be forewarned - once you read one, you'll want more, and these books are somewhat hard to find in the U.S., although copies are usually available through the store sellers.

Such a great book with everything to love. Strong male and female characters. Adventure. Love. Deceit. Revenge. Treasure. Sex. History. Wilbur Smith is the man, love his books! I've read the first 5 books in the Courtney series now and they are all so good.

I didn't care for this book particularly. The leading lady is not likeable at all. Yes, she has lost a lot of loved ones and been shipwrecked, etc., but she is too hard boiled for my tastes and too determined to get her own way. While she is horrified that Lothar has killed her little friends who saved her from the desert, she has no qualms about destroying their sacred grounds when she is diamond hunting. She can't forgive Lothar for doing something in fear and superstition and tries to kill him even though he has saved her life as well as her baby's life when they were attacked by a lion. She invites him into her bed and gets pregnant, much like she did with Michael Courtney and then totally turns away from him after she has been saved by him and then gives away her baby. I understand the anger but what about all of the horrible things she has done? She killed the old sailor who saved her when they were shipwrecked. She is not a nice person and I suspect that in the sequel, she will not improve.

the courtneys of africa is a must read....The only reason I gave this one 3 stars instead of 4 was that it took too long to get into the book. When you put the courtney saga together, it is one of the all time great epics....try to read them in order....

Wilbur Smith likes the African historical saga. He doesn't mind having a pilot adventurous type or two in his stories, either.
Here we have the strong brave woman, the dashing husband, struggle for survival in the wilderness, and an impregnation. Add in a dastardly bloke or two, and there you have it.

Wilbur Smith can really tell a story. Burning Shore transports the reader to a different time and place, and does it so well that you never want to leave the world and characters that Smith creates. Engrossing, powerful, beautifully written.

I read this book several years ago, yet it stands out vividly in my mind. I feel that I will always remember the outline of this compelling and adventuresome story unlike the vast majority of routine novels that I have read.
If you like the sound of an African adventure novel with a young shipwrecked woman struggling to survive, I highly recommend it!

This continuing Courtney epic runs slightly parallel with A Sparrow Falls, at about the same time period. The main character, Centaine de la Thiry, makes an excellent mother for a Courtney as she is incredibly tough but without being harsh. This is an incredible tale of death and survival under the most savage and primitive conditions; a must read.

This book really demonstrates the prowess of Mr. Wilbur Smith about the political situation of South Africa. He has practically immersed my interest deeply with the way he focuses with its characters as well as the events that are sorrounding them. Really a thumbs up piece of book!

In this first of the Courtney in Africa series, Wilbur Smith depicts nature in wondrous descriptions, sharply brings out the personalities of his characters, and weaves a tapestry of action-filled intricate plots.
When you read one of Wilbur Smith's novels, you want to read them all.
