It seems as though I''ve been reading Wilbur Smith forever. Some of his books are good and some are great - this is one of the latter. This is old fashioned story telling of the rip roaring, sometimes a little out there kind. Just let go and enjoy the tale of the Courteney family, this time moving from England to Capetown to best of all, a ship wreck in the Indian Ocean. There's a hunt for a sword, there's romance, there's fighting, there's all sorts of things that will keep you reading past where you might have otherwise put the book down. Tom Courteney is a great character. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. Recommend this to Smith fans as well as to those who have yet to discover him and are looking for a good absorbing book. This would be perfect for travel.

I have purchased and read every novel written by "WILBUR SMITH," my personal literary hero! Be aware that as much as I truly enjoy all that the store.com offers, its "manuscript conversion" program has known errors and requires any user to carefully review the results of such manuscript conversions to correct those errors (and I mean "line by line" of every page between the two covers). As a published Author, I avoid this issue by using the services of a commercial company with high reputation to convert my manuscripts prior to submission to the store.com. Let me hasten to add that I have yet to encounter ANY conversion program that is 100%. I've used a number of them and must pay close attention to them as well. Hope this helps. JCH

Another adventure I had trouble putting down! Typical for Wilbur Smith. There is only one animal tiger, but at least 5 human tigers in this story. I hope this is not the last we hear of the Courtney family now that Tom thinks it is time to buy a home.
Power of the Sword (The Courtney Series - The Burning Shore Sequence) :: VICIOUS CIRCLE :: Papyrus: A Thriller :: River God: The Egyptian Series 1 (Egypt Series) :: The Sound of Thunder (Courtney Family, Book 2)

If some of the raw sex scenes and gruesome torture and gore had been removed, this would have been a decent young adult book.
The writing seemed directed at that genre.....stilted, declarative, simplistic predictable....shallow cliches adapted from daytime soaps.
Plot, history, adventure, story....OK
Virtually all characters showed cliched emotions, needed more depth and creativity.....many misprints.....disappointing!

Blah. Non stop gore, horrendous tortures, ..evil evil men and good hearted, submissive but oh so strong women. Typical Wilbur Smith but without any of the charm of most of his prior books. Annoying, rather repulsive, boring and predictable.
