This novel, set in ancient Egypt, is an enjoyable read. The story, as told first person, is of a slave of a wealthy young girl and theirs rise to power. It flows well, kept me engaged and I would recommend.

Assuming the historical setting and culture are accurately represented, this book was very educational as well as graphic. It does seem that the main character, a supper-slave was a little unrealistic in that he was an expert in everything and had everything figured out in advance. It was a good read that held my interest.

Absolutely riveting. The characters are so real, they walk around your home. The action never stops. This is the first book by Mr. Smith I've read and his writing is compelling, real, and just plain wonderful.

I love action-adventure and I love historical novels. Combine that with a fascination with ancient Egypt before the division of it after the fall of Cleopatra, and a good writer and what can I say? I love it!

This is a wonderful story of ancient Egypt. You are drawn into the events and the characters and soon find that the few minutes you wanted to read turned into an hour or more. The book has action, mystery and takes you completely away.

This is a must-read for fans of historical fiction. Smith takes us in a place seldom visited before in the genre--ancient Egypt. The story obviously has a solid research foundation and well-drawn characters keep the reader involved as the plot unfolds. I was riveted to this book.

I found this somewhat tedious and didn't read beyond halfway. Descriptions of the period were quite good but over all it was just tiresome as descriptions often went on more than was necessary to set the scene..

What a lot of nonsense. Historically incorrect. The narator, slave Taita is insufferable. Besides being, in his own opinion an extraordinarly handsome eunoch, he invented the spoked wheel, he's a physician (none to equal him amd ahead of his time), an architect, an interior decorator, a sculptor, an artist, a plumber, an expert chariot driver and battle tactician, an inventor of superior bows, the list goes on. And he writes very long stories supposedly on papyrus scrolls. His heroine, the Egyptian regent, is also so very beautiful and just too good to be true. A people's queen. In ancient Egypt?
If you are going to write an historical novel, it would be good if some of the history was correct.

The ebook was riddled with typing errors, which I have reported to the publisher. The story of the book was absolutely great. Each page was gripping and exciting. Well written book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.

I find this time and place in history fascinating and Wilber Smith has outdone himself with this particular book. A series follows but none come even close to this one. "Seventh Scroll" is commercial and unbelievable in comparison for example. River God sucks you right into Ancient Egypt and the characters become friends of yours, people you care about and empathize with. The art of historical fiction at it's finest execution.

River God This is an absolutely brilliant read,The first book in the series about Taita the slave, centred around the times of the pharoahs this book tells the tale of a country in the turmoil of war, lawlessness and the main characters daily struggle with their lives close to the crown of egypt and how they are torn for their love of each other. it kept me awake late at nights as it is a hard book to put down once started.
love it.

A quick and interesting read, especially from a historical perspective. I learned some interesting details of ancient Eqypt and surrounding areas. The book becomes predictable and expect the trend to continue into subsequent books in the series so I'm stopping with this one.

Technically very well written, but the story managed to capture my attention for maybe 1/3 of the whole 20-years (?) plot. I'd very much prefer to read it when I was 14 and frankly would rate it with 4* if it was marked as young adult novel. Also - the characters were too black and white to make it interesting.
