Wilbur smiths previous novels have always been excellent, and fabulous plots, it is very apparent that this novel, has been written and shared with another author. The ending is so disappointing, I simply cannot rate this novel very well.

The book is far fetched and on realistic. The scene with the biting whales is so impossible. Not my kind of book at all. W.S's first books 'Where the Lion Feeds' and 'Storm' for instance, were good but since he makes use of co-writers...... I do'nt know. Never again.

I really enjoy Wilber Smiths books. I've only read his Courtney series so don't know about the other sagas. His discriptions make me feel like I'm there. That being said, there are times when they are so detailed and wordy I skim the pages to get back to the story.
Birds of Prey: The Courtney Series 9 :: When the Lion Feeds: The Courtney Series 1 :: The Diamond Hunters :: A Sparrow Falls: The Courtney Series 3 :: The Quest: The Egyptian Series 4

Very slow. A Wilbur Snith book just lost its zest! I'm struggling to get though the attempts to make it exciting', But hey, it's a Wilbur Smith book so I felt obligated to read it through, given that I've read every other.

The Golden Lion was a big disappointment. The story, set between the Birds of Prey and Monsoon, tells the story of Hal Courtenay following the death of his father and escape form the Dutch prison. The plot was very thin and lacked the story telling grandeur and tapestry of Smith's previous Courtenay novels. Sadly, this is almost always the case when writers give up and allow co-authors to take over.
Smith's novel before this one, Desert God, was equally disappointing.

Among the many excellent authors in the world, Wilbur Smith's in-depth creativeness and ability to smoothly weave historical, geographical and other factual elements into such entertaining and spellbinding novels is a benchmark beyond all others. He raises ever emotion with his big-as-life characters by tugging the reader's heart strings to fall in love with the good guys (who also have another side) and hating the bad guys (who are evil beyond most peoples' imagination) with a passion that prompts pure satisfaction when destroyed, often in the utmost vile manner! None better!
