This is a charming story and Forster gives a treat with character development as the story unfolds in Italy and England. George's father is a man of wisdom and, hopefully, we all gain from his message and insights to Lucy.

Forster's touching, funny and insightful novel toys with the conflict between passion and propriety in the British upper classes in the first years of the past century. Like a good Austin novel, we enjoy the journey despite the inevitable conclusion. In fact, it's not crazy to suggest that this is a book Austin may have written had she lived 100 years later.
The movie, starring Helena Bonham Carter, is faithful to the book and worth watching. But read the book as well.

What a wonderful book about the mores and manners of other times and other countries. I have read it several times and it led me to other books by Forster and a biography which gave a wonderful insight into the person he was. The contrast between England and Italy was well delineated and a fund of great interest to me. What a well written book and what a wonderful insight into a world that no longer exists. Thankyou the store! Gpat.

E.M.Forster had everlasting human insights seen throughout the book. It is a pleasure to read realizing that human nature and feelings were of concern at his time like they are at our's. He, Forster, was a sensitive thoughtful person for his time- ahead of his time, perhaps. His paper on Friendship and his Passage are I think, a Must Read among the Classics.

I liked this story. The sweet romance between Lucy and George sprouts from the restrictions of Edwardian society, all the while highlighting the gentle and sometimes fierce passion hidden by petticoats and waistcoats. The problems I had with the story was that Forster never had a romance like this story and could not write about it. The romance between Lucy an George jumps around and suddenly they are back in Florence and married.
