Great information at a great price! I've been through the course at ICL and have ordered many books for reference. ICL is most definitely a trusted source for children's literature authors- both seasoned and new. This book is a quick read that's sure to encourage you to either start writing or pick the pen back up!

Easy read - takes less than 2 hours to get through! Lots of useful information, but it is brief. If you want more of the nitty gritty, you would have to go for something longer and more in depth, but this book provides a great, overall picture of what it takes to write a children's book. Some of the ideas in the book are basic, practical ones, but it was good to be reminded of them because they are so important in writing an excellent book.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how much practical content was contained in this little book. I took a couple of courses with the Institute of Children's Literature several years ago, and found this book to be like a condensed course, packed with useful tips and exercises. I will certainly refer to it often when submitting children's stories—the checklist at the end of the book is invaluable! I have already recommended this book to a couple of people I know who are interested in writing for children—it's affordable, compact, and extremely useful!

The information about writing for children is excellent. Writing picture books through young adult books are covered. The emphasis is on publishing through a traditional publisher rather than self-publishing, but you can find other books on self publishing. And finding out how publishers think when they look through submissions is quite valuable. This book would be helpful to many fiction writers, too. I've seen many fiction ebooks where the writer could use help with grammar, plotting, characters, etc.

Katie Davis never fails to deliver when she offers advice in any type of way! This little book is packed with all kinds of information and advice which can be used by both the amateur just starting out and existing writers that need some direction. Each chapter answers many questions that we all have (and may be afraid to ask) plus many ideas that will help anyone wanting to change their target audience in their writing. Chapter 5, which is an interview with a mystery editor, really stood out for me as that is truly the most mysterious part of writing - how to get your book published. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and I hope to be able to go ahead with my dreams and ideas easier and sooner than ever!

How to Write a Children's Book offers excellent advice and guidance to newer writers. There is a very helpful writing prompt section and as I completed each step in that section, I felt more confident about my writing. Several articles also included in this guide contain relevant information from actual editors. At the end of the book, she includes a few organizational checklists that every writer will find essential. After reading it, I feel hopeful and more confident about the future of my writing for children.

There are so many helpful hints in this text, including details on how to research your subject, target your audience and find where to publish.
The suggestions for how to get started on a story and using age-appropriate language and syntax are clear and specific. The best parts to me discussed organization techniques and consistent writing practice, and there were enough specifics to personalize this book for many different styles of children's writing!

Excellent book on writing for the children's market. This book is very thorough on the do's and don't of writing an effect children's story. Interview at the end of the book was very enlightening. It gives the reader a good insight into what children's book publishers are really looking for and how the process works. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who writes for the children's market, but can also be helpful in the overall story construction for any genre you write for.
