What can I say about Christopher Nuttall, either you love him or you hate him. His books span fantasy to sci-fi and more. You always know what you are going to get with him. A solid story and interesting characters.

Big fan of Nuttall and while waiting for science fiction stories to be published I decided to try one of the magical series. At first I thought Harry Potter knock off then things changed and a whole new concept of magic came up. Couldn't put it down, read second book and just downloaded the third in the series. I may like these magic series books better than space series upon which I was hooked.

I like Nuttall's military science fiction and picked this just to see how he handled fantasy. Let me say that this obviously written for teenage girls. But, it's well written, with a complex plot, interesting, fleshed out characters, and enough action to keep you reading. I would give it four stars for me, or other older male readers, but five stars as a piece of writing for the intended audience.
So This is Christmas (The Adrien English Mysteries Book 6) :: Winter Kill :: Fatal Shadows (The Adrien English Mysteries Book 1) :: Fair Play (All's Fair Book 2) :: Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)

As usual another very good book. Seldom do you find someone that writes the way many folks brains work. Although somewhat of a Harry Potter like story, it takes you to places you do not expect and makes the magic seem more real. Not sure how this guy keeps on writing so much and yet has good stories and characters. The characters become your friends and you want more. Thanks!

There are a few "holes" in this book but character development is solid and the action is exciting. I look forward to less teen angst and more refined storytelling as the series matures. Good Effort!

This is one author whose books I will always recommend. He goes from sci-fi to fantasy without missing a bit, I actually thing he writes fantasy better then sci-fi, and consistently delivers.
This is a book on the whole taken from our world inserted in another scenario. Only there is no chosen one, the protagonist is simply somebody whose mother was named Destiny, thus she's a child of destiny. No super awesome abilities, no super skills, just a girl who likes to read...

Good characters, kind of 'Alice in Wonderland' feel. I bought the second book as the character is a couple years older. (I have a 'thing' about young characters (Harry Potter age) going through experiences I could not deal with, but that is just me!) The older character appeals to me more - OK we are talking about 16ish years old!

I tried to convince myself that their were plenty. Of "free books I could be reading, rather than start a new series. I lost, I liked his other books so .much I had to try it. I was not disappointed,so much so, that I was up til 4am before I finally went to bed. I know this doesn't,, tell you anything about the story, but it should tell you how good it is.

Great fun, likeable protagonist, silly story, but of course, it's in the style of a classic fairy-tale. One day the heroine, Emily, the daughter of a mother named Destiny, is magically whisked away because she is a "Child of Destiny." Adventures ensue. It's a romp. Th emagic is not too badly-thought out.

The Harry Potter stories are great young fantasy. These books touch on what it might really be like to be snatched from your world to another and suddenly find yourself in the middle of a work war. Very worth the read.

I really enjoyed learning about Emily. I'm really curious to know if she is a real child of Destiny or a victim of circumstances but I'm glad she got to leave home because she was being neglected.I'm also glad she made friends with the princess. I think Emily's modern ideas may get her in trouble. I also enjoyed the ending.

Fantastic book, start of an amazing series. Adventure, action, excitement, coming of age with a girl protagonist learning wizard in -- shared with multiple family members, bought the audio book!! Think Buffy meets Harry Potter, and well written.

Like Harry Potter there are slow areas, but they are in keeping with the laws of the Universe that the Author has created. If you need girl-power you'll find it here in abundance. I enjoy it for the drama between two different era. Also what's the girl gona do next. I am waiting for the love interest. To enjoy it, remember the rules of magic and life in general.

Chris Nuttall has done it again. His "Ark Royal" series captured me from the get go, and even with only three books start to finish, I was delighted. "Schooled in Magic" looks to be capable of running to many more than three volumes, and if you fall in love with Emily, as I have done, you'll WANT more than three.

Great story, page turner!
Great cast of loveable characters.
Emily is kidnapped when a necromancer demands a "child of destiny" for a sacrifice. They bring her Emily, whose mothers name is Destiny!!! She ends up being sent to a boarding school for magic. She uses the insights of our technical developed world to understand magic and to earn money in this magical, but non technical world.
The world she is brought to is on the brink of being over run by necromancers. All the separate kingdoms want to hold on to htier own power instead of working together.
She is a kind, strong, no nonsense heroine, who just uses what she has to her advantage and is determined to give it her all.

I found it very hard to put down. Previous references to Harry Potter surprise me. The only thing in common is a magical school. This writer has a special talent and vivid imagination!
Can't wait to read the next book.

Definitely a young-adult book, but enjoyable by all ages.
I like the strong, but compassionate female lead and the running commentary from her overlaying the experiences and social norms of her world over the world she finds herself in.

I like strong women characters. This story is the way a career slips up on an unsuspecting young woman who wants nothing more than to live her life as a normal human. the story is excellent in its development and as real joy to read. If you like a little magic in stories, this could be for you.

Very engaging novel, but it had a slow, stilted start. But once the main character starts at the magic school it really picks up and is very enjoyable. Came back after a couple years and bumped it up to 5 stars, because it ages well in my memory, (and in re-reads!)

I have always enjoyed the escapist adventure of a character who finds themself dropped into another world. But in this book, you never really get to escape the world. There are continual geek references and reminders of the world. The plotline was interesting and the characters were multi-dimensional, but I never left Earth behind.

Christopher Nuttall turns from SCI FI to Magic and Fantasy in this book, but he is such a good storyteller that I does not matter. I is worth the price and now I am hooked on another series by this author. Please take a look at anything by Nuttall and you should not be disapointed.

Great series. The writing is for a highschool reading level and the misspelling of "cauldron" as "caldron" is killing me. Otherwise, I find the premise fresh, the world enticing, and the characters rich.

I've read several of Christopher Nuttall's other books before this one. I really enjoyed his Scifi books but found this entry into fantasy slightly lacking. The premise of the book was interesting to begin with, but once you get into the story character development and reactions to events in the story didn't make sense to me.

The protagonist is far too "Manifest Destiny", automatically considering herself to be superior to the others around her. She keeps comparing her surrounding's to fiction far too many times. She does not consider how her " inventions" affect her new world, or its inhabitants. Then there is the constant going over past action in the books. Mention prior books once, briefly a d get on with the rest of the story! No one wants a book that whines, make your hero worthy of the title, I kept hoping something with too many teeth to jump out and eat her self-centered face off. Or barring that getting turned into a were-chicken.

Christopher Nuttall is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. This story has good and reasonable character development and the support characters are not just 2D inserts to drive the storyline. Anyone who likes a little magic in their reading will love this book.

Another good read. Christopher is now one of my "keep on the look for" authors. I have read, and greatly enjoyed, a number of his books. This is the first one in the fantasy genre for me. And it is as good as the ones in the Sci-Fi . That impresses me.

This really is an awesome series! I could not put this book down, or the rest of them, I flew through the series. It was a fun adventure and I can't wait for the next book! I was drawn into the story and it was like I was right there with the characters as the story unfolded. If you enjoyed reading the Harry Potter type of series, then you will enjoy reading this series! I highly recommend this book and the others in this series!

Well written story. Does a good job of setting the tone for the rest of the books. Very minor mistakes but Character development is fine. I probably would have spent another chapter developing the Earth back story but it still works. After reading all 10 books I'm looking forward to book 11.

Like Harry Potter? So does the author. Intro the heroine, from our world. Tried to be killed by a almost lich. Foiled. Sent to a magic school where she is treated as different for being the saviour. And the author also likes breaking the fourth wall to explain that this heroine would not be good at sports like other heroes esp not multiple balled games with weird rules (definitely not quid ditch though...no broomsticks)
It reads like a fanfiction. To much time spent on the details of the school and not enough on the action. Frankly, the magic system described as computer programming is interesting but does not need to be belaboured.
Also the author hates modern education. Interesting how people only focus on the negatives.

When reading this first in a series I was skeptical. Shame on me! Was deeply detailed and interesting from start to finish. Was hard for me to put down and go to sleep. Can hardly wait until the remainder of books in this series become available

Literary fluff, easy reading, diverting, and fun. I am reading the full series as a distraction. It is not great literature but enjoyable, like ice cream on a hot summer day, not necessary but enjoyable.

Stories about learning magic have a high bar set by the Harry Potter series and comparisons are unavoidable. While Schooled in Magic references Harry Potter on occasion, the inside admission doesn't do enough to distract from the similarities between the two. Still, Schooled in Magic has some strong characters and some good plot twists that make you want to continue with the rest of the series despite the feeling of familiarity.

Christopher Nuttall has created a compelling story of a world with magic defined by logic and rules. it is a captivating story of a teenage girl, thrust into a new world where her greatness comes not so much from who she is, but from what she knows.

I loved this book. The characters are captivating and the new world Chris has created has endless story potential.
The story flowed nicely with a great mix of action, suspense and character development.
Can't wait for book 2!!

The book was interesting premise on magic. and the character development needs some work. This authors other works were much more captivating but the story line takes patiance to get into the book where the story is much more worthwhile.
