Well written and intriguing to read. It transported me back in time when women were much more submissive than in today's time. Kate Chopin certainly seemed ahead of her time in regards to such a strong female character.

Lately, I've been getting into works from the far past, so I was excited to read a "groundbreaking...feminist" novel from the 1880's. I enjoyed this story and can see how it would have been shocking in its time; I believe that this book paved the way for female writers

This was foisted upon me for a reading assignment and I was dreading it. By the blurb about it, it struck me as a decidedly female-oriented book. I was surprised to find myself drawn into it. Yes, there are several 'statements' being made, but they are done in the context of the story and social structure of the era in which the story takes place. Also, it shows a great deal about how women have had to work around the fringes of a very male dominated society. A good book for everyone.

Edna Pontellier struggles to come to terms with herself and others about her approach to femininity and motherhood against the social norm of New Orleans and the Lake Ponchartrain area. I thought her ideas to have value.

The Awakening was rather slow yet it showed te repression of the woman during that time. I was surprised at the ending . I also wondered about the Husband who seemed to go along with the wifes erratic behavior. The book had been recommended for my Granddaughter for her High School reading material. We usually read books together so we can discuss them . This book was well written and it discribed a time when women were considered eye candy and not much else. The other short stories were fun the best of the bunch was the one about the couple who loved each other madly then when she had a child The Husband thought that she was black and He disowned her and the child, only for the reader to find out a surprise endng..

The Awakening is a beautiful piece of work that continues to shine after a hundred year. If one is on the look out for a good read, instead of searching through bookstores for the newest release of novels, give some space for the classics and be surprised not only by the wonderful use of language, but, that despite of huge economical and technological advances over the years, the basic human motivational factors remain unchanged. A brave piece of work for its time.

Our Classics Book Group had a wonderful discussion of this book. It was really interesting to compare our society expectations with those at the turn of the century. Many first opinions of the heroine changed as we examined the influences in her life.

This book slipped by me when I was studying American Lit. I'm glad that my daughter had to read it for a class. It peaked my interest, and for two bucks, we each downloaded a copy. One thing was a little weird - I was reading this on my Kindle, and when I got to the end, another story started right away. I thought, "Wow, where is she going with this?" until I looked back at the book description and saw "...and other stories."

I loved this book! It’s really about a feminine awakening. I felt like I related to Edna (the main character) in a lot of ways. Reading about her was like vicariously handling my depression. I’d definitely recommend.

I downloaded The Awakening by Kate Chopin because I'm interested in reading stories about strong women. It was a plus that it was illustrated. Interesting story. Thank you, the store, for providing the book for downloading.

One of many books and collection of essays I bought when doing my thesis on Ecofeminism and Kate Chopin. Fascinating woman, and a great author!
As always when doing a critical paper or a thesis, gotta have the Norton Critical Edition!

It was fascinating to read Kate Chopin's biography and then "The Awakening." It reminded me of Ibsen's "Doll House" and the suffocation of women at the turn of the last century. It is sad she was ostracized after it was published.
