So I purchased this book after reading Mythology: The DC Comics Arts of Alex Ross in which i discovered that Alex Ross studied Andrew Loomis' book in order to improve both his shading and anatomy. The book arrived on time. I've never purchased an art book before but I was surprised to find out just how easy it was to follow. From learning about shading and how it applies to the human figure to creating form and learning how to apply it on a live model this book was truly a guide into anatomy drawing. I am currently in my first anatomy class and to my surprise my teacher uses a lot of the measurements and technique that Loomis sets for the reader. The book was written in the era of commercial art so Loomis refers to it a lot in the book but regardless it helps the reader understand how he came up with the ideas that he shares and on how to apply them to his own style. Loomis does a great job in guiding the reader instead of commanding him/ her about techniques or tips. I would recommend this book to anybody who is starting to get into figure drawing or who wants to improve their art, overall.

I received this beautiful book upon immense anticipation. It is beautifully written. The pages are clearly preserved. My livelihood is figurative paintings, but I was never schooled. all artist's are constant students because we never just settle with our followers admiration. Thank you Andrew Loomis for sharing so beautifully.

This is the best anatomy and figure drawing book I have ever owned. It is Clear and practical. His artwork is brilliant, he is a master. He shows how Perspective makes figures in artwork more real and dynamic. He shows many, many examples of how figures can be posed and the flow of their movements. Andrew Loomis has influenced many great artists. My commercial Art teacher in high school, Mr. Coia taught us the methods of figure drawing from Andrew Loomis (This was in 1987-1988). I cannot recommend this book enough.

A good book but compared to "Drawing the head and hands," also by Loomis, it just doesn't quite stack up. A few opening pages spent on fundamentals aren't enough in my opinion and the book too quickly progresses into the typical pinup style women wearing high-heels in poses nobody cares about these days.

However, the knowledge in the first section ( fundamentals ) alone is worth the price of the entire book, so I give it 5 stars. You could literally tear out the last 2/3 of the book and get the same out of it, the first third is epic.

VERY helpful book! Loomis knows what he's talking about. You'll definitely learn a lot from this book. Every art student should have this. He's a talented man and his artwork is beautiful--it's some of the best figure drawing i have ever seen.

Full of knowledge, everything in Andrew loomis books, is perfectly explained. if you are looking to better your drawing skills and become a better artist then this is the book for you. it covers basic anatomy so and function of muscles so you can understand why the movements are the way they are, it also talks about how to draw children and elderly people, which isn't something that normally is covered in books. it's a great book.

Product arrived promptly and as described.

Having no teacher to guide me in my drawing, I scoured the webternets reading everything I could find re: talented artists talking about how they'd gotten that way. The name 'Loomis' came up A LOT, and this book in particular was consistently referenced as a must-study.

I haven't read it yet myself, I'm still muddling through 'Fun With A Pencil,' which someone told me was best gone through quickly for the fundamentals before studying 'Figure Drawing' in greater depth. 'Figure Drawing' is now the carrot I hold in front of myself when I'm getting tired of drawing blooks. F8ck1ng blooks... I've had it up to here with them.

Loomis's advice on drawing figures in perspective and the treatment of lighting, proportion and anatomy is excellent. Loomis treats the figure constructively and encourages drawing the model from the inside out. Loomis also emphasizes the decomposition of a form into simple geometric shapes, such as triangles. Triangular pubic regions have been erased or blurred by comparison with the original. Examples of tampering occur on pages 110, 133 and especially the illustration on page 153, in which the lines differentiating the pudendum from the right leg have been erased, leaving an anatomically incorrect bulge on the right leg. This 21st-Century reproduction of Loomis's book from 1943 is unaccountably unfaithful to the original. There are no editorial indications to this effect.

This book is really worth buying. Because I'm new in the drawing department and self taught, I was a little skeptical whether or not a book could show me the right techniques or if I would progress with it. I studied the first drawing page for a couple of weeks just to get familiar with the page like it suggests and I seen an amazing difference from when I first got the book to now. It goes in depth and it has pictures to guide you through it. I would suggest this to anyone starting to draw or to those who already know and just want to re-familiarize themselves with the basics.

Don't let the word 'classic' mislead you though. This word describes the timeless relevance that Andrew Loomis is so well known for. After all, the man died in 1959 but his practical observations and techniques are still in practice to this day, and will be for some time to come. Indefinitely by my account. If you're learning anatomy, this book is a must have.
