Great book for anyone wanting to learn how to draw. The lessons are well written and Mark takes you step by step to all the exercises in the book. I was always surprised with my end result. Highly recommend it.

I grew up watching Mark Kistler on television as Commander Mark on Secret City, and have remembered his lessons for 30 years. This book is THAT kind of brilliant teaching in book form!

If you want to learn to draw there is nothing that will match it in getting you from 0-60 in no time. I couldn't recommend it more. Buy it you will be proud of your purchase!

Mark's teaching skills are way above many out there for learning how to draw. I own many learn to draw books out there and this is the first one that I actually feel that I come away from it knowing that I have actually learned something from it.

While I love drawing and sketching books that provide inspiration, this is the first book I've gotten that provides instruction for those of us who really are staring with the basics. Just got the book today and have completed the first lesson and am looking forward to seeing where I am a week from now, let alone a month from now! I'm hopeful that this will turn into a five star purchase.

Good book for anyone who wants to learn some fundamental principles of drawing. This will give you some basics and get you on your way. This deals more with shapes and inanimate objects, but does cover light and shading. A few basics on the human face, eyes and hands. No nose, lips, hair or form. For that I recommend "Drawing the Head & Figure" as a good beginning book.

Even my stick men drawings were pitiful before I started reading this book. I couldn't do anything, and just believed that I hadn't been born with the talent to draw. I bought this book because I want to learn to draw light comics, though I wasn't too optimistic with my expectations.

The first few lessons weren't that exciting, but the author's enthusiasm is such that I kept plugging. It didn't take long to see that every lesson built on the one before, and suddenly I saw strange things happening. My hands knew how to sketch out lines. I was learning these little pencil strokes and pencil angles to draw shading. And the exercises were becoming more fun because I got to see something on the paper that didn't look like broken stick figures.

I have been finding myself drawing for fun during meetings, doodling while watching TV, and looking forward to the next exercise every day. My daughter took one of my drawings and insisted on putting it on the refrigerator. A friend at work saw one of my drawings and told me it looked professional. This book really works, and I'm very grateful to the author.

At this point, my expectations have grown. I'm not just going to learn to doodle out comics. I'm going to learn to draw anything I want to draw.

With no knowledge or previous experience, and unable to affort personal lessons, this did a good job getting me started. The pace is slow but in the end worthwhile because it reinforces basic skills. While not a great artist, I can actually create a credible drawing. Which for someone with no talent, is quite an accomplishment.

I have a few drawing instruction books, but this one if very different. At first I thought it was more basic than I needed but right off I started learning new things. You not only learn exactly how, you learn why and then you do your lesson practicing step by step. Oh, did I mention that it is fun? Well it certainly is.

Very good.

Did all the exercises and learned a great deal on perspective and art language.

Gives you some confidence and the author writes in a friendly manner as if he is right there with you. Showing his students' work is very helpful too.

As a digital artist I have often found that relying on computer software can make a person forget the basics of drawing (shading, perspective, etc...). I bought this book to aid me in improving on my drawing ability. When I first contemplated buying the book I went back and forth because I am always hesitant to buy into anything that guarantees success. However, this book does exactly what it promises it will do. Not only did it improve my skills it also helped my fiance with learning how to draw as a beginner. I would recommend this book to anyone whether they are a beginner or someone like me looking for a refresher.

I have not gotten through the book, but got through more than half of the 30 days. So far, I am impressed on quickly the author is able to get you up and drawing some pretty cool things. Now, I just have to be a little more structured to get through the rest of the book.

This book helped me understand a lot of concepts about drawing and has a lot of good material on how to practice.
With a bit of time and a lot of paper i'm sure this book will help you as it has helped me. Would Recommend.

I am not an artist. A straight line is impossible for me. But this book is great for me. In just the second lesson I made something and you can tell what it is supposed to be. Viola! I am having fun and getting better very fast. OMG! Next lesson is a pedestal table. Shadows are so important to make things 3D!

I haven't drawn since high school (MANY) years ago. This book is just great. It takes you through 30 lessons starting out with simple spheres and moving on. The text is fun and not too technical and he gets you started right away with drawing. I highly recommend this book to learn to draw or reacquaint yourself with sketching. It is definitely worth the money. I'd like to see him do a part two.

I wanted to get back into drawing after many, many years and felt like I needed to brush up on the basics. Kistler's book is a great way to do that. The text and illustrations are fun and playful, which makes it more enjoyable to use than a dry textbook type book. It's broken up into daily lessons, with step by step instructions and includes drawing samples from some of his students, so you can compare your progress to others. My one critique is that his drawings are a bit on the cartoonish side, but not enough to down rate the book.

In retirement I'm stretching myself to learn new things. I decided not to accept my usual "I can't draw" as my final decision and ordered this book. Kistler has developed a system for teaching even the least right brained senior how to draw using basic shapes and techniques for shading. I'm only seven lessons into the thirty in this book and already I've been able to brag," Hey, I drew that!" You will want to schedule time to do these lessons and do some practice, but it really only takes 20-30 minutes for each. If you really want to learn how to draw, order this book!

Really a great instructional book that truly teaches you how to draw like a pro. Fundamentals of drawing ANYONE can do. Trust me... I couldn't draw a stick person when I started this book. Now I can draw just about anything - - in 3D. Excellent!

My first choice for someone just learning to draw. Teaches perspective, light and shadow and how to make your drawings 3D. 30 easy lessons. Ideal for beginner. Easy to understand for someone who has never taken an art class, and enjoyable enough to stick with for 30 days before going on to another book. My favorite to start.

I was very skeptical of this deceptively simple book, like some other readers. But Kistler's reference "cube" is very helpful, and so are his exercises on one- and two-point perspective. Today, I was in a cafe, and all of a sudden I saw it - the box in his exercise. The whole room was a three-dimensional box that I could now draw.

66 year old grampa with no drawing experience. 30 days later noone can believe the things I can draw. This is the ticket to get you off to a fast start. I paid for this book and have never been encouraged to give it any kind of review.

I am a total beginner. I have no drawing experience whatsoever. I'm learning stuff no doubt but after the first few chapters it turns into cartoon drawing. There are some good things in this book but if I knew what it was like I would have not bought it. I went to the bookstore and browsed through books and found much better books that I can use for learning to draw what I see in real life settings. I also don't like that he uses "Beginner" student examples that clearly are not true beginners. First lesson someone who is a true beginner shouldn't be putting out beautiful shading technics and perfect drawings. I also found better stuff on you tube. Paul Priestly for example is brilliant with teaching. This is a picture of how to draw a rose according to this book. Really.
