This book is a fun way to learn about calligraphy, but it definitely leans towards “modern” handwriting. Perfect for learning how to write girly cards, canvases, etc. Pages of the book are a little thin.

Lovely beginner Lettering & Modern Calligraphy book! Especially for the price! The seller even provides an email to request for a "free goodie" ( additional letter project pages). So fun! Would highly recommend for your starter book!

I love how simple this book is. It provides background about hand lettering to get you started, and it provides a lot of practice space. In addition, I've received two e-mail freebie practice sheets since purchasing!

It’s easy and you learn at your own pace. This book is a learners guide and totally starts you from the basics so anyone can learn. I recommend this for the young all the way to the elderly. Dissapointed with this book. I have the Tombow Dual Brush pens, and the brush lettering practice is so tiny it doesn't work well with the brush pen size! The majority of the book is single letter practice: brush calligraphy small, brush calligraphy large, sanserif small, sanserif big, serif small, serif big. The pages upon pages of non-brush font seemed unnecessary for a calligraphy book. Plus, the fonts seem TYPED. See the g in the serif page--it seems the author just typed the letters all the way down.
I do like the "project" pages at the end that give ideas on how to combine writing. The word brush practice is good, but again tiny for Tombow pens and seems typed too (the letters connect more like typing would). The pages upon pages of simple writing practice and tiny lettering was frustrating. I would've liked different types of calligraphy/brush lettering. You're better off downloading some free practice sheets from the Tombow Pen website.

This is a wonderful book! I recently started bullet journaling, and as someone who has always felt like I had bad handwriting, I really wanted something that could help me improve and make pretty lists like the ones I see on Pinterest. This book does just that! I really like how much space they give you to practice and all the helpful tips along the way. Definitely buy this book if you’re looking to improve your lettering!

This book is perfect for beginners like me. I love how it teaches you the strokes, the basics of fonts, techniques, tools and tips. Also, emailing paper peony press, they send you free Goodies. So excited to get further in my book!

bleeds bad. I couldn't really use the practice pages because they are front and back and the first pages ended up ruining the backside. This book goes through markers / pens used with calligraphy but the paper cannot even hold them. Not worth it.

Disappointing. They recommend the Tombow brush pens in the beginning, but the brush lettering practice space is so small that it really doesn't work with that size pen. Most of it is single-letter practice pages, and I really didn't think there was enough space to practice as much as required.

i have always wanted to learn caligraphy and this book is a great beginners book. I love the little practice project i am really excited to finish this book. The only thing is i advice not to use permanent pens and markers bc it will bleed through totally my fault but other than that i totally give it a ten.

I am very much enjoying this bright and pretty beginner's calligraphy book. There are five alphabets included: brush lettering, hand lettering, sans serif, serif, and "fun" sans-serif. There are five pages at the beginning to give some essential background information including terminology, techniques, tools and tips. This is very easy reading... nothing complicated. You learn what ascenders and upstrokes are, as well as the difference between serif and sans serif in case you don't know already.
After the five introductory pages, the book gets into the lettering, with each section having a page showing all the lowercase (or uppercase) letters, right before the pages where you actually get to practice. The practice illustrations have an arrow so you know right where to start, in creating and duplicating the letter.
I had a bit of trouble getting started, while learning to do the upstrokes thin and the downstrokes thick. However - I bought a tablet with lined calligraphy paper: Mont Marte Calligraphy Workbook 50 Sheets. So I did a lot of my first lettering attempts there and kept this lettering book for when I truly started to get the feel for what calligraphy should look like. It also helped that I got the right pen to begin with. I recommend Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen 2 Pens Set which gives a clean line that encourages me to continue on towards the goal of perfection. Oh, I'm not at that goal yet, but I'm trying, and enjoying daily practice sessions. I tried several other brush style pens but none worked as well as the Tombow calligraphy brush pens.
There are 64 lettering practice pages. Next there's a section about the connections between letters with a a page of explanation, and eight practice pages for the pretty brush script connections. Finally, there are three pages of explanation for project design considerations, and 15 project pages where you can copy a pretty project created by the book's author. These have cute (but short) sayings to copy, such as "dream big" and "home sweet home."
Speaking of the book's author, I wonder who that is. It would be nice to have a name, photo, and bio of the book's creator. Seems strange to have a book and not know anything about the writer and calligrapher, as it has only the name of the publisher on it. I'd just like to know more. Nice start for calligraphy, though. I know there are may other calligraphy techniques and alphabets, but this gives a good start for someone who has never done it before.

I was overall very pleased with my order! The book has a nice solid cover, which won't rip easily. It contains different styles of lettering and teaches you well. The book leaves space for you to practice inside of it. I recommend it!!!

It’s a great book but I struggle without instructions. I ordered some brush pens online and I will try that to see if it will help with the harder lettering. But it is a good book I’m just uselesss without being given instructions.
