This book is part of the Matchmaker series (but it's a stand-alone book). Set in the regency period, Caro and Niall are the main characters in this book. Caro meets Niall at a house party given by a man her father wants her to marry so she can get a title. Her attraction to Niall, the tutor, is palpable and over the time they are together in the same house, he falls hopelessly in love with her. But he is a lowly tutor with no hopes of enticing a woman of means such as Caro to reciprocate that love. I liked this romance, although it moved slower than I liked and was more serious than some of the other books in this series. That could be due to the time period. But the romance between two ill-fated lovers pulled at the heartstrings; happily, it wrapped up nicely and made me smile.

This was such a sweet story! I loved the characters. Caroline was such a good, kind person and I wish I were more like her. I also loved her friend Fiona. I liked the way they supported and loved each other. I also really enjoyed seeing their interactions with the two little boys in the story. Niall was a master storyteller. I loved reading the Irish tales he told. They added a unique aspect to the story.

This book is part of the Power of the Matchmaker series, so Miss Pearl was also in the story. In this book, her presence is very brief. Niall meets a mysterious, exotic stranger who tells him where he will find love. This was quite a different approach than we’ve seen from Miss Pearl before. I liked the way the story ended as Niall had to decide what to do about the mysterious stranger’s prophesy.

The book contains a lot of Irish names, in large part due to the stories Niall tells. There is a pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book, which was appreciated. But I had to go back to it often, so I finally gave up and just pronounced them in my head the way they looked. :)

This is the first full-length novel I’ve read by Heidi Ashworth. It really made me want to read more of her work!

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The Skinny
Caroline Fulton is an Irish heiress whose father is intent on finding her a wealthy English husband. The daughter of a wealthy sheppard, she is not interested in the English lord who has wooed her father. Instead, she takes note of the tutor who teaches the barron’s two younger brothers. While she and her friend make waves with their mere presence in this English household, both women realize whom their hearts belong to.

The Players
Caroline – an Irish heiress who is desparate to get out from under her father’s roof
Fiona – Caroline’s friend and companion
Lady Bissell – Lord Arthur’s stepmother, an Irishwoman herself
Lord Arthur Bissell – the wealthy baron inheriting Oak View
Niall – an impoverished tutor at Oak View
Charles and Christopher – Arthur’s younger brothers/Lady Bissells’ sons, Niall’s charges
Lady Anne – a jealous, insensitive cad of a woman

The Quote
“Why has Miss Fulton gone away?” Christopher asked.

“I had thought she would have dinner with us in the nursery,” Charles said.

Niall felt not one whit less bewildered. “That was certainly my intnetion when I suggested we each take dinner on a tray,” Niall explained. “Perhaps she did not understand. Suppose we issue her a proper invitation?”

“Do you mean that we should write one for her?”

“Precisely my meaning,” Niall said. He procured a piece of fresh parchment and put it on Charles’ desk. “Now, what do you think we should write?”

“That she must come back,” Christopher suggested. “But we must say please.”

The Highs and Lows
--Caroline’s Father. He is not the man he appears to be. Indeed, he is an Irishman and a harsh man at that. While Caroline may not want for much, she cannot wait to escape from under her father’s roof. She isn’t looking for much at all in order to persuade her to leave, which is disheartening. She could jump out of the frying pan and into the fire with that mentality. However, after she and her father return to Ireland, I can understand her reasons. He is a cruel, hard man. He doesn’t treat her like a daughter; he treats her like property. She is his cash cow.
--Instalove. I was surprised at this book and its instalove! Both Caroline and Niall both comment about how they only know each other for three or so days and they are like star-crossed lovers. It is like a Romeo and Juliet rewrite – both in terms of the instalove, and a father who won’t allow his daughter to marry a man of lower class. While I understand it can happen, it happened too fast. It did not seem plausable. It just seemed an infatuation.
--Charles and Christopher. These boys are a hoot! They are sweet and kind and quite witty. They can drive Niall crazy, but enter Caroline into the mix and they are angels.
--Fiona. Her character rubbed me the wrong way. She is like the here and now voice of Caroline’s father, prohibiting her from fraternizing with Niall. Primarily on the basis of class. It made me see Fiona in a different light. She put these embargos on Caroline, but then does not see that she is behaving in the exact same way with her own infatuation. There’s just one difference.
--Lady Anne. She makes such a fool of herself! It is worth reading just for that!
--The Matchmaker’s Prophecy. Niall is convinced he must follow the matchmaker’s prophecy: that he will meet the woman he is meant to be with on the River Liffey, she will have blue eyes and her name begins with L. While Niall is fascinated and falls for Caroline, after her sudden departure from Oak View, Niall still carries the torch but is resigned that she is not the woman from Pearl’s prophecy.
--The Ending. I was shocked by the last quarter or so of the book. After Caroline and her father leave Oak View, things spiral out of control. I could not believe what was happening! And then something bigger happens, and Caroline ends up walking the footbridge over the River Liffey daily. The ending had a twist that made me feel worse for Caroline. It all could have been avoided if her father would have just listened to her instead of being stubborn. Ugh!

The Take-Away
It was hard for me to get into the book at first, but I found I liked Caroline’s character – and Charles and Christopher. The rest I could do without. There wasn’t a lot of pull for this book. It fell a little flat. Lady Anne’s own situation of embarrassment was hilarious to read, though!

I’m beginning to think that Georgette Heyer has spoiled regency era romances for me permanently. I probably will never be able to pick one up and not compare it to Cotillion or Frederica.

It’s the typical scenario, as many romance novels go. Boy meets girl; they fall in love instantly. There are lots of flirting and eye-gazing. Conflict enters in the form of class differences. She’s a rich heiress and he’s an impoverished gentleman. Her father’s in search of a title for his daughter and the love interest fails to meet his expectations. Naturally, when they meet, sparks fly. Priorities go out the door. Duties, what are those? I don’t really mind any of those things, to be honest. Here's the problem.

Caroline Fulton is our female protagonist. She is beautiful, with hair of gold and eyes of blue, and soft, white hands. She is witty and charming and intelligent, and she is to be wedded (do you hear me, wedded!) to a baron whose only claim to quality is his title.

Niall Doherty is our male protagonist. He is handsome, having lovely dark locks and gloriously haunted eyes. He is witty, charming and intelligent, and he comes with a tragic past™.

That’s about it, really. All the other characters are pretty much props and plot points to push the romance along. There’s the mysterious matchmaker who’s there to play matchmaker (what else is she going to do?). There’s the obligatory friend who acts as a reasoning board but is soon pushed off when her own love interest is introduced, allowing the main couple to have their secret time together without interference. There’s the obligatory rival, the baron, who’s old and ugly and—more importantly—a jerk. His whole purpose for existing is to serve as a rival and foil to Niall. There’s the catty, spiteful girl whose sole purpose is to be Caroline’s foil. There’s the father whose only wish is for his own happiness, making him arguably the villain of this whole thing. And then there are the angelic/demonic children who are only angels to the protagonists and demons to everyone else, which, in my eyes, only serves to point out how wonderful and flawless our protagonists are.

I got nothing enjoyable out of it, except for the ending. I suppose that was something worth waiting for.

I really love the Power of the Matchmaker series. Pearl is a sweetheart and does her job superbly in matching prospective loves. Heidi Ashworth in “O’er the River LIffey” does a great job of using Pearl and giver her characters balance and depth. This is a fun, romantic and exciting story. Caroline make a great heroine. She knows she must have her father’s approval, but she also knows she must pick her love. Niall is the perfect combination of poor tutor and strong hero. I like they way they interacted and grew to love each other. Of course, there are the usual misunderstandings and swoony moments. This is a great addition to the Matchmaker series. Pearl, as always, becomes who she needs to be in each book. I would have like to see more of her in this book, but that is a personal like. I loved the ending and the way Ms. Ashworth brought Caroline and Niall together. This is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon, lose yourself in this charming regency romance. Great, clean fun.

I usually enjoy a good Regency, but this one moved a little too slowly with not enough character development and too much mundane narration and conversation. I'd say it has an overall vibe of pleasantness, with Caroline as the consummate beauty in a perpetual good mood, her sidekick friend always willing to giggle at her little remarks, and Niall overcome by all her goodness. They are immediately attracted to each others physical appearance, develop a very proper and polite friendship, and bemoan the fact that her father would never allow a match between them... all within two days. Niall's Irish storytelling was a highlight of the book, and I especially enjoyed one in particular, of a girl who saves her brothers from a curse. Each of the books in the Power of the Matchmaker series utilizes Pearl, the Asian matchmaker, to various degrees, but this one had her involved the least amount.

This is another installment in the Matchmaker series! I have enjoyed each of these books so far. This one moves at a slower pace but I still enjoyed it. Pearl, the matchmaker, makes a few very short appearances (each consisting of a few paragraphs) at various parts of the book. She felt like more of a random character than the driving force behind bringing this couple together.

Caroline and her father, along with her friend Fiona, travel to the home of a baron. Her father is hoping for a marriage between the two of them. Once they arrive, Caroline is taken with someone else. His name is Niall and he is the tutor for the baron's younger brothers. He's not a man of means and her father will never approve. Niall is a great storyteller and, while I enjoyed his stories, that's part of what slowed the pacing of the book down. I personally didn't mind too much, though, since at least he was a good storyteller!

There are some complications to Caroline and Niall being anything more than friends, due to Caroline's social status and the prediction Pearl made to him about his true love match. I was curious as to how it would all pan out and was hoping for a happy ending. There are some great characters in this book and I enjoyed getting to know them. Overall, I liked this book and am looking forward to reading even more in this series!

Here is another book in the Power of the Matchmaker series. I love this series because each book is so different as they are written by different authors but they carry a common thread that ties them all together. Each book is meant to stand on it's own which is awesome because you can read these books in any order, at any time. My only suggestion would be to read the prequel novella to understand the common thread of Miss Pearl, the matchmaker.

This book has a more sedate pace to it. It is gentle and very proper in it's romance. Caroline and Niall are both kind and intelligent characters. It was easy to sit back and enjoy them. Niall is a storyteller and his Irish fairy tales are woven throughout the book.

I enjoyed this book but it was pretty slow moving. It wasn't something that captured my attention in a way that I felt compelled to press forward. I missed the presence of Miss Pearl. She appeared at the beginning of the book but wasn't really a part of the rest. I missed her.

If you enjoy regency books, you should pick this one up. It is well written and presents the time period perfectly.

Oh, and I love the cover. :)

Another great book in the Power of the Matchmaker series! This book had a slower pace to it than some of the others. I was also surprised by the minimal appearance of the matchmaker, Miss Pearl. She plays a very low-key part in this story in comparison to some of the others in the series. And yet, her character still fulfills a very big role in the way everything comes together at the end.
This story contains several Irish folklore tales related by one of the main characters, Niall. It slows down the pace of the book, especially in the first half, but I enjoyed reading the tales as I've heard different versions of several of them and it was interesting to compare them. I loved the personalities of both Niall and Caroline and seeing how their friendship and relationship developed. There were lots of little historical details about the time period (such as the jaunting cars) and the way the different classes of people were allowed to interact with each other. The action picked up towards the ending and I was anxiously reading to see how everything turned out. Loved it!

What a genuinely amazing novel after my own heart. It has an Irish setting and I absolutely fell in love with that aspect of this book.

I love the Power of the Matchmaker books they are truly amazing and wonderful.

Definitely a book for you if you are a hopeless romantic. More of a book for a woman with all the romance and love aspects but still wonderful.

A great historical romance to read as well. Which pulled me in to where i couldn't put it down until i finished it.

Niall is so amazing and how the book starts out with him being approached by a Matchmaker is amazing.

Sweet, caring amazing n sexy strong character who has gone through so much and holds no hope for his future.

Pearl works her magic again. Niall Doherty is surprised when a mysterious woman tells him where to meet his true love, she even goes as far as to tell him what letter the woman’s name will start with. Niall is later confused when a woman who does not fit Pearl’s description fascinates him.

At first, it took a while for me to get into the story, but after a few chapters I couldn’t put it down. I was captivated by the stories Mr. Doherty told from his home land. The wails coming from the direction of the forest, with rumors of banshees claiming lives had me enthralled. Heidi Ashworth knows how to get readers hooked and keep them wondering what will happen next. I would give this story 5 stars.

I was really looking forward to reading this book. It was not quite as good as I expected or hoped, but it was still quite good. I loved the main characters: Caroline, Niall, Fiona, and the boys. I liked all the Irish tales that were told as well. Pearl has been a beloved character in the other novels I have read in the series, but I did not really like her part in this story. In many ways I feel the story would have been better without her part in the story. At the very first it was okay, but as the story progressed, her element of the story had me wondering how things would turn out and it distanced me from the story. And the ending felt a bit deus ex machina despite the fact that I expected something like it because of her involvement. Pearl isn't in the story much at all, but I feel I would have enjoyed this story better without her in it. Over all, I did enjoy the story, and I love the cover.

I loved that this installment in the Power of the Matchmaker series was set in Ireland. This is a great story with a steady pace and main characters so nice that you want to keep reading to see what happens to them. I love how Niall shares his Irish fairy tales with such ease and enchantment and how he treats his rascally charges with kind firmness. I also liked how Caroline is intelligent and kind and non-assuming in spite of her wealth and her bear of a father. With a little bit of danger and mystery and lots of dreamy romantic moments, you'll enjoy this story!

The relationship/romance in this story was very sweet. I liked the characters and liked how nice they were to those around them especially when they were being persecuted. They went through some unfair trials and they handled them well. I also liked Niall's stories and the Swan Maiden was my favorite of the stories that he told. I do think this book was pretty slow at times and made it a little harder for me to to get into. I think my favorite parts of the book were the parts with the children- Master Christopher and Master Charles. Overall it was a good, clean read.

Such a sweet regency. I love the main characters, Niall and Caroline, and enjoyed the Irish folk tales and the poems masterfully intermixed with the story. I'd classify the pace of the book much more a sweet ballad than a vigorous jig. The story is not a romp, all silliness and jokes, nor a lust-fest. It is a true romance, where two people are immediately attracted to each other and then discover many things in common and develop deep and lasting feelings for each other. That love motivates them to overcome the obstacles that separate them. A very satisfying read.

I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys clean romances and historical fiction.

Full of folk stories and Irish references to fairy folk and Druids this charming story tells of love in another time. English etiquette and Irish charm are clearly portrayed under typical circumstances of centuries past. The house party, dressing for dinner, the lot of a private tutor or ladies employed at a finishing school make us think of the freedoms that today are easily taken for granted.
A very proper love affair between the main characters none-the-less manages to portray the very strong emotions that each have. It is unthinkable today that any young lady should be locked in her room, but the writer draws us in with her portrayal of the emotions, not only of the heroine, but that of her strict father.

I enjoyed the Irish/English setting of this book. It was a fun love story, and I liked the twist at the end (which admittedly I totally saw coming... but still). It was a little slow, but not so slow that I wasn't able to enjoy it. Probably my only real problem with it was that the most villainous character of the book wasn't developed enough that I really felt like I understood how he or she could take such extreme actions. It was a sweet book, not an all time favorite, but I did enjoy it. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was another fun addition to The Power of the Matchmaker series! I love that each book is so unique, different setting, time period, storyline.

I liked the characters. I felt like you could watch them change and grow as the story went on. They had to overcome a lot to be together. This book was a little difficult to understand, but much of that was because of the very thing that appealed to me about the story, the setting. I'm not familiar with Irish folklore or the way that they speak. I did enjoy the book though and would recommend it!

Once I saw the pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book, I knew this was not going to be the book for me. I thought the book to be slow and it was really hard for me to get through it. I wasn't a fan of all the odd names and weird stories. I didn't really see the point of the matchmaker even being in the book. She had no significant role, it was as if she was an after thought and was thrown into the story just to say it is part of the matchmaker series.

Miss Pearl is a very minor character in this story, I would have liked to see her a bit more. I liked it, it's a good historical romance but I can't go to love on this one. I absolutely love reading historical novels – whether it is suspense, romance, or biographical. They are my favorite stories to read. But, I had a really hard time getting through this book. I actually skipped pages just to get to the end.

Although the book moved really slowly, the storyline was actually pretty good. I can’t imagine living in a world where you can never speak your mind and you can’t speak at all to the aristocracy unless spoken to first. And imagine not being able to court the person you really loved because they didn’t hold a title. Fortunately true love almost always wins in novels.
