My MBA financial accounting teacher suggested we read this prior to starting her class. It starts out very basic and I thought, "wow, if you don't know this stuff maybe an MBA is not for you." But as I continued to read it I was pleasantly surprised as to how much I learned. I must admit some of the writing is a bit hokey, but the lessons are easily learned.

I am an accounting major and was looking for something to help me brush up on the basics. This book did just that. It presents the material in such a way that its not the least bit confusing. It is a great read for anyone who thinks they might be interested in accounting or just needs some very basic knowledge on it.

I bought this book for my husband, with some trepidation because it seemed a little too "dumbed-down." But when it came in the mail, I was pleasantly surprised! My bookkeeper mother even learned a few things while skimming through it at our house.

This is my initial review, i have only made it through the first 3 chapters. Honestly at this point i dont like it. It presents the materiel in a very compartmentalized manner making it hard to get started. the farther in you go it starts to tie things together better and incorperate what you learned in the last chapter but if you want to go back a chapter and try to understand it better it is hard to do, it is a one way book. I will update further when i finish the book. Over all i am learning but it is a bit of a challenge since i dont know all the pieces and how they relate to eachother.

This is an easy, excellent accounting book. It's the best accounting book ever. The examples are clear and understandable. It's fun to read. It gives definitions that you'll remember, and is an excellent overview of accounting.

However, I'm only giving it three stars because it suffers from something that most accounting books suffer from: impossible examples.

This book is done like a worksheet. It's about half simple instruction and half impossible examples. The examples are impossible, because to actually fill them out, you'd have to remember tons of information from 1-10 pages ago. The part where you just read is very good. The part where you're supposed to fill out the account schedules on the pages of the book is almost impossible to do by yourself.

It would be an excellent workbook to be used in a 10-day accounting class, where you write in your book as the teacher writes in his or her book. But, if you're trying to do this on your own, you really would need to keep track of tons on numbers and receipts, etc., to even be able to do the examples.

While this book is recommended for those with no accounting/bookkeeping experience, I think it would be better recommended to those with some experience that has lapsed. It got a bit too weird with rentals, commissions and things like that instead of sticking with normal day-to-day office accounting.

It's not a bad read. And, I do recommend it for those who have no other options!

This is a book for the person who just encounter accounting principle. It offers us some fundamental knowledge on how to use the accounting theory. But for the higher level people, they might not fit this book. However, we can share the knowledge together. [email protected]

The book makes a good job at teaching the basics of accounting but I found some of the explanations too simplistic. Not a fan of the writing style also, there are parts where it almost looks like it was written for kids.

This book requires to practice and write while we are reading.
The pictures for an ebook have a really poor quality.
It would be great to have the functionality to write down on a section like the author recommends but I had to do it on paper or not do it at all because I did not have resources at the time I was reading so I had to memorize what I would be writing down while I was reading.

It was certainly fine to read the first sentence. You can hook on the book because it is cool. Love the book.
[Editor - AKA dad] The above was written by my nine year old who read this on my kindle without me knowing. After she read it, I asked her about some of the concepts and was surprised to find out how much she had picked up. The book walks you through the concepts without pandering, and I recommend it highly.

This book is 'cute', but hardly an effective learning tool, or even a primer. What this book does well is put concepts in a real-world context; what it does abysmally is explain and flesh out the concepts further. In the style of learning by example, the examples in this book are so superficial that one would be hard-pressed to apply the concepts to other situations. Furthermore, this book focuses primarily on bookkeeping details rather than accounting; the accounting topics are barely touched upon, save for a disclaimer that 'this stuff can get complicated, and you should get a CPA to explain it to you'. Sounds counter-productive, doesn't it?

Based on the majority of reviews here, I was hoping this would be neither too simplistic nor too dry. Unfortunately, its too simplistic, and also, since it uses a story-based layout, it is essentially worthless as a reference. What I was hoping for an easy-to-understand reference about accounting, but this is a rudimentary set of information that you have to read beginning-to-end to make any sense out of.

I bought this book because it had great reviews on the store. I own a small business and just need to keep track of money. Unfortunately, I didn't take any finance/bookkeeping/accounting classes in high school or college. I like the fact that its a small book but I feel it had too much fluff at times. It had a decent explanation of things and the little activities were helpful. However, I still don't feel comfortable using quickbooks and understanding my accountant. Hopefully if I read a few other books things will start to click.

I took off two stars because it put me to sleep with all the fluff.

I bought this book for my wife so she can learn accounting. She is new to the subject, while I have a degree in accounting. The lemonade approach is fascinating, however, it was poorly executed. The authors do not seem comfortable with the subject, and present accounting in a twisted and unintuitive way. Instead of using lemonade sales to explain basic accounting concepts, the authors used lots of bullet points of repeated information to force memorization.

My wife has the following comment:

I have trouble making myself read the book, because I just want to bang my head on the wall. I felt I wasn't learning anything. The jokes and the repetitions of sentences really waste my time. An example of this would be:

"This Ending Inventory from last week becomes what kind of Inventory this week? Beginning Inventory. right!

One last time: the ending Inventory automatically becomes what kind of Inventory? Right! The Beginning Inventory for the next week."

The authors treat me like a kindergartener with all the repetitions they use, and non-funny jokes.

Not a review on the seller. Book review. I never thought a book could be so condescending. Written for the audience of a 12 year old wanting to learn about Accounting. Not for graduate/law students. This was picked to teach law students an intro to accounting & finance. I absolutely do not like this book. I couldn't finish it, it was written so poorly.

Does a decent job describing balance sheets, etc.

This is truly an amazing book to learn accounting, I probably haven't stuck to reading a book this long in a while.
The explanations are clear and easy to understand in layman terms.
You learn a lot of useful tips about the real world.
The diagrams are colourful.
The author adds humour so the learning experience doesn't become monotonous.
There are exercises to make it more interactive and there are answers in the back of the book to check your answers.
Overall, this book is engaging, fun to read! You will learn quickly with this.

BUT, my only problem with this book and it does make a big difference. I don't know if it's just me or if anybody else noticed this, but SOME diagrams in the back of the book are displayed differently than your exercise and let me tell you it will throw you off instantly and it becomes very frustrating. For instance, a page will ask you to fill out the income statement diagram, BUT on the back of the book, the answers for that page will appear to have additional slots, and this will throw your calculation off BIG TIME. (Perhaps somebody who owns this book can offer some advice, it could just be me or it is an error?)

Other than that, the explanation of accounting has never been more easy to understand, thanks to the authors for writing this book.

I've taken accounting twice, but the last class was 27 years ago. I never used the information. The result? I don't remember the names of the statements necessary for running a business, much less what they're used for.

I need the information now, though. Most books on accounting are far too dry for my impatience (I was bored in class, too). Imagine my surprise when I found this!

This gives the basic accounting information in a cheerful, childlike manner. It doesn't resort to childishness nor is it dumbed-down. It's straightforward enough that an older "student" like me (I'm in my 50s) can appreciate its simplicity. It may give younger persons occasion to roll their eyes at it, but they'll still learn from it. What I most like is that I can use the information right now.

To quote Disney's Mary Poppins, "You find the fun, and *snap* the job's a game!"

I am a high school senior who is completing her Health Science major, but wants to major in Accounting in college. I knew nothing about Accounting, and this workbook is the best! Even my classmates who are studying accounting and business at my school say that they wish they had this before.

I wish all my class work or textbooks could be like this! It's so ridiculously good that I've already finished a third of it under an hour! If you get stumped and the answer key doesn't give you the answer, that helps you think about your work and improve your experience (the answer key just gives you whichever answers are necessary to comprehend the lesson). The authors totally get us with their colourful language that I've forgive all of the monotoned teachers I've worked with.

Now I can be confident when entering business school. I will never forget this book because of its silly, childish narration and visual engagement! BEST OF ALL, THERE IS A SUPER AWESOME CERTIFICATE REWARDED AT THE END!!

This book provided exactly what I wanted - a good introduction to the basics of accounting. If you want to understand the basics of accounting without having to take a college course on it or wading through a 500-page, jargon-filled textbook, or if you want a book to supplement a college textbook and reinforce the basics, this is a good book for you.

Allow me to emphasize "basic" accounting; you will learn stuff like terminology (e.g. what "gross profit" is and how it differs from net profit), basic methodologies (e.g. LIFO vs. FIFO), and basic tasks like how to create balance sheets, cash statements, and whatnot. This book will not, however, make you a CPA overnight; at some points, it may give you just enough knowledge to make you dangerous.

Although I doubt there's a way to make accounting really interesting, this book came close, and the format as a storybook really made sticking with it a lot easier (and less boring). It's also concise enough to be read relatively quickly and interesting enough that you'll actually be willing to do so. Highly recommended.

The Accounting Game Updated and Revised, 2008 edition, by Darrell Mullis and Judith Orloff, provides under the apparently childish Lemonade Stand presentation a sophisticated approach.

How so ? Well in the first seventy pages, you can answer the following questions : what is the difference between Accrual and Cash Accounting ? Can I use as a small business owner the Cash Accounting Method ? What are the advantages of the Cash Method ?

Moving on with the next pages, are you in the transportation business(or any inventory busineess ) where your costs are continually rising when it comes to inventory, should you use LIFO or FIFO method of valuing your inventory ? Would you like to lower your taxes ?

If you cannot answer these questions nor understand what is involved, run and get yourself a copy of this book !

I read and enjoyed this book. I was looking for something that would give me a foundational knowledge of accounting. This book specifically covered Income statements, Balance sheets, and Cash flow statements. It also touched on some corresponding concepts such as inventory valuation methods, depreciation, and determining the difference between an expense and an asset.
Although the book was enjoyable, as I am working on learning the Peachtree accounting software program, I am realizing how little I learned, or maybe how much more there is to accounting than what was touched on in this book.
So my conclusion is that this book explains pretty well the 3 financial statements I mentioned in a fun way, and it is more of an introduction to accounting, rather than a basic preparation for any real world accounting.

Don't get me wrong, this is not at all a bad book. It has plenty of good information and is a very easy and simple walk through basic accounting fundamentals. You can possibly attribute it to individual sentiment, but i believe the book was a little too simple as well as a bit childish. I've read other accounting books that explained things just as well but in a more mature and pragmatic way. Maybe for a high school student who has an interest in accounting, this book can be proficiently useful. But above that there's better choices.

Thsi is an awesome book for those who wants to learn accounting but doesn't know anything about it. The book takes you as a baby, step and step intro to some terms, procedures, and even simple balance sheet and financial statement. Apart from the knowledge the book try to deliver to you, the whole thing in the book seems like how to sell your lemonade, focus on accounting part though. Actually when I write the comment, I only read 4 chapters, feeling good enough. I've learn a lot from it. Especially, you won't feel board about this book. This is amazing!

This is an excellent primer on basic accounting. It is an effective learning tool that takes a subject that is usually pretty dry and makes it interesting.

The approach used is taking a child's lemonade stand business and demonstrating accounting principles through the operation of this endeavor. Many educators could learn some lessons from this approach about how to teach seemingly boring subjects without putting students to sleep. Those who are writing books on other topics might also learn a lesson or two from the authors of this book.

It does a thorough job of teaching about the basic financial statements: Income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement. It also covers FIFO, LIFO, and accrual vs. cash methods very well. It does not cover some of the other accounting principles that can be confusing such as the accounting debit vs. credit entries.

Although it does miss covering some important topics, I heartily recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn or brush up on the basics of accounting.

Five is not a high enough score for this book.

This book takes the mystery out of Balance Sheets, Profit & Loss Statements, and Cash Flow Statements. The authors actually make it easy to create and maintain these reports.

By using a story of a 5-year old who creates a lemonade stand, and later a consulting firm that teaches other entreprenuers how to build a net profit, this book also considers both the entrenuers who sell products and those who sell services. Many, if not most accounting books do not explore the differences between financially managing a service-based business, versus a product-based business.

Whether you are an accountant, a start up business owner, an established business owner, or an aspiring entreprenuer, READ THIS BOOK.

In college, Accounting was a struggle and I just didn't fully understand. This book is great for the basics and makes it less dry. Doing textbook problems was a trial and error to see if I was able to get the right answer and to then memorize the process of getting to that answer, but this book made me understand how the numbers come about.

As a person in the profession for 20 years, I'm always on the lookout for a good book to help the staff I train at the firm I work. When I find a good accounting book, such as this one, I not only buy copies for my office, but I recommend it to anyone who wants to enter the profession. This is one of the best I've read. Clear, concise, and explains complicated concepts with ease. Highly recommend.

ever get bombarded with terms like revenues, bottom line, gross margin, fifo, negative cash flow? i had taken almost 21 units of accounting in college but without practice(marketing is my expertise) i have but almost forgotten the meaning of the terms as well as the relationships among the balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows. this book relies on the simple method of relating the basics of accounting to running a small business as a kid(a lemonade stand) and then applies the principles of accounting to it. although i never did have problems with my accounting courses, my classmates did and they could have used a quite engaging method as described by "the accounting game." even if you are in the financial/accounting field, this would still provide you with ways of explaining concepts to non-financial people. i would highly recommend this as a must read...

I purchased several copies of this book to use in business literacy training for employees at my organization. It helped the rank-and-file to understand the numbers on the financial statements and what they can help to improve them. The authors did a great job of taking a complex topic and explaining it in a way that anybody can understand. Who among us didn't try our hand at a Lemonade Stand when we were young. It has some elements of a textbook, ie., a test at the beginning and end, but most definately doesn't feel like a textbook. I received positive comments from all who went through it with me, including a 13 year-old girl or should I say, a 13 year-old accountant.

I am actually understanding the basic concepts of accounting. Not that I am slow at picking up things, but I needed some supplemental material as opposed to my textbook. I feel that its not building a solid foundation for me or not taking the straightest path to introducing accounting. (Really you be surprised at how fast it was talking about international issues before it even mentioned what an asset was.) This book really just pleased me with how I was actually enjoying accounting. I am starting to rethink a lot of things because of it. I am not longer scared of accounting courses (which is great because I am a business administration major who was leaning towards marketing because I wasn't able to make sense of accounting, no longer the case.) Definitely would recommend.

I have a degree in Geography and started recently an MBA. I searched for a book that could help me, by my self, this summer, to understand the basics of Accounting before classes.

I finished reading the book just before started attending Accounting classes and I'm perfectly fit, even with the students of Economics and Management.

This book is very easy to read (sometimes you even feel a bit childish...) but you get what you want - the understanding of the Accounting rules and basics. The method is very original, with big pictures, full colour, simple exercises.

For me, it helped to build in Excel a simplified Balance Sheet, and the Cash Flow and Income Statement, while reading the book and making the exercises.

I would definitely recommend this book.

I bought The Lemonade Stand book helped by the readers opinion at the store. This is the first time I write a review because I need to express my gratitude to the other readers who wrote before me and make me buy this excellent book.

This book is great for those of us who know nothing about accounting. Granted it is just an introduction. It is only about 150 pages if you don't include the pre- and post-test. You'd have to be an idiot to believe other wise.

I laughed a lot, which is something I'd never thought I'd do reading an accounting book. In fact, some people herd me laughing while I was reading this and inquired what I was reading. When I told them that it was an accounting book, they thaught that I was a little touched in the head. Then I read a little bit to them and they laughed too. You will also, so go out and buy it!!!!

Darrell Mullis and Judith Orloff have created an easy to read and simple introduction to practically every accounting concept you will need to run a small business. Their method is simple: you are a kid with a lemonade stand. You need to handle cash, inventory, assets, liabilities, and so on while you run your business. Through this very simple approach they succeed in teaching some of the most critical accounting concepts. And they make it fun!

I cannot say enough good things about this book!

I had originally purchased "accounting for dummies" and found that it was too confusing for me, a complete novice. This book was one distributed at work, and I was hooked by the first page. I finished it all in a day and will probably go back and read it again. Not only that but, I feel like I understand what the accounting world is about. I wish more textbooks were written like this one.

I've taken accounting classes when I went to school to get my Associate's degree, it's been a few years since I've studied it. I really needed something to refresh my brain and prepare me for learning in the field of accounting, since I will be returning to college this fall for my bachelors in accounting. This book really did just that, and it was in such an easy format! I finished it in two days, and I feel that I learned more than I think I did in school 4 years ago! It helped me understand inventory and depreciation better than I ever had. I highly recommend this book for anyone planning to open a small business, or if you're planning on returning to school in this field, it's a wonderful refresher course!

This book is absolutely fabulous! I have basic accounting skills that I've learned over the years through work or keeping track of my personal finances but I never understood the principles. This book taught me in terms I could understand how to understand accounting and to get me excited to learn about it. I've tried taking an accounting class in college but it put me to sleep within an hour of lecture. Reading the textbook assigned in class was also enough to put me to sleep. I loved this book so much that I'm posting my very first review on the store and I bought 4 extra copies to give to my teenaged boys and nephew. I belive this will be a great reference for them when they are ready to learn. I highly recommend this book.

I just graduated this June with an MBA- so I've had done lots of accounting in the past for homework and exams and case study projects at school. I just applied for a job that said I had to take an accounting exam so to study I thought I start with this book before I dive back into accounting since it's thinner than my fat textbooks. I sort of knew all this before- like in school I had half memorized where things went in the balance sheet, income statements etc. and what to subtract or add- but after reading this book, I feel like I really really understand everything in a way I never had before. The book is amazing. I understand the basic concepts intuitively now. It made everything very clear and easy. It's a fun read too!

For someone who had to take accounting for the first time ever, I found this book to be a very effective introduction to the tedious world of accounting. It's a very helpful book in that it gives you a pretty good understanding of the balance sheet and income statement in the context of running a simple business. (It does not really help you much with the cash flow statement.) It's written to help you recall basic fundamentals easily so despite the 'coloring book' feel of the book, I thought the authors did well it achieving their goal.

If you're just starting out learning accounting, then this book is great for understanding the concepts. It takes a different approach by portraying accounting concepts using real life analogies, instead of just showing you the form or routine of entering transactions in a journal or balance sheet and income statement.
For those who have already learned the very basics of accounting, this book is not for you.

This book is great for people who don't have any experience or general understanding of accounting. A few months ago I was hired as an office assistant, even though I had no office or bookkeeping experience. Quickbooks was an enigma to me for a while, although it's definitely getting better.
It only took me a few days to finish this book, and it was enjoyable all the way through. This book will NOT give you specifics on how to start your own business! It was written for inexperienced (dare I say ignorant?) people who need a leg to stand on before they start digging into the specifics. If you are accounting-challenged, make this the first book you read, but not the only one.

As a small business owner without any background in accounting I found this book to be very easy to read and understand. Although I have a college degree in engineering, I never took an accounting course in college. This book starts out assuming you know absolutely nothing about accounting, then teaches accounting terminology and principles using the simple example of a neighborhood lemonade stand. It's an easy read, but a book I will now use as reference material when I need a refresher for one of my businesses.

I have no accounting background and was very frustrated with the accounting class I was taking and the book that we used for it -- it jumped around too much making a busy topic all the busier. This book put quite a bit of it into perspective.

I wouldn't have minded a little more length for better handling of the statement of cash flows. Also, the book leads and uses the balance sheet primarily where the application should be reversed -- build the income statement and then the balance sheet.

I'd love to see more books like this on a variety of topics.

I am in the process of improving my financial literacy and like many others had always felt that accounting was dry, informal and boring. Once I picked up this book however I was engrossed and finished it in just a few days. My understanding of accounting, and more importantly how a business operates, increased by orders of magnitude. I really noticed when I came into the office yesterday and struck up a conversation with one of our stategic business planners. Before long I was pouring over our last annual report's financial statements and getting it!!!

It's a good introduction to accounting. Perfect for those who have absolutely no idea about accounting! The basics of accounting equation are explained in a very interesting way and at a slow pace with some problems for you to practice on, which really helps to learn! However, you definitely need more than this book if you want to become an accountant ;-)

Fundamentals of Financial Accounting would be the second book to read after this one.

One of the benefits of this boook is that it provides you with up to seven back-to-back periods of actual sample data (simple data, but still useful). There were numerous highlight markings throughout the book. The tests exercises were answered as well, even though not in ink. However if you use an eraser the impression still remains on the paper. For an accounting workbook that makes it completely useless. I just put it aside and havent used it at all. The book did come on time though but as far as I'm concerned it may well have not come at all.

This book brilliant in the way it takes a confusing subject like Accounting and breaks it down so that it makes sense. I have just received this today and have started reading the first several pages. I find it to be quite simple yet very informative. If you are fairly new with regards to accounting and would like to learn the basics then this book is definitely the right one for you.

This is not a typical account text book. It is written with a sense of humor, lots of colors, and is constantly keeping the reader involved with many exercises. I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to gain a basic understanding of balance sheets, income statements, cash flow, and inventory.

I bought this book to get quick overview of accounting. I had a hard time pulling the real information out from amongst all the pictures and gimmicks. It looks and feels like an elementary school textbook, complete with the juvenile writing and crude drawings. I was embarassed to take it out in public (shallow, I know!). I felt as though I were being talked down to. I returned the book within 24 hours. This may be good for some, but if you want straight information, try another study guide. This volume was just too frivolous for my needs.

...write pap like this.

If you're a real simpleton, not just ignorant or uneducated but an honest-to God simpleton in need of amusement you must have your legal guardian or custodian order this one for you. There are lots of spaces where you can scribble numbers and there are childish drawings to make you chuckle. Oh, and bright colors too! In order to keep your attention. Maybe best of all, it's written for your grade level - remedial. And that's OK because you won't learn anything from this book.

People, don't waste your money as I did. One I do recommend is Financial Statements by Thomas Ittelson (list price $15.99 and worth more).

By the way, co-author Darrell Mullis has presented over 300 "phenomenally successful" seminars, while co-author Judith Orloff helps people "transform their lives through self-awareness." I googled both these and found not one word indicating that either of them ever actually taught anyone anything. 'nuff said.

The authors steal people's lives and try to make money from a girl's life and that is absurd, trying to exploit a young girl's life, studies, and everything and form it into a stupid mockery profit for the rest of the world to joke of her studies and her intellect and school. Authors like these and many others manipulate people's lives and pretend to change things around to promote further exploitation games along with the other groups doing the same thing and that is not right. I have read the book and the level of accounting is hard and the authors try to turn it into a stupid joke. Don't waste your time learning this stupid nonsense way when you can learn the right way! When you waste your time reading this, you could be using your time wiser reading the right book to enhance your knowledge. Don't be a fool to this book written with absurd stories and meaning. You have the right way to learn and you have the wrong way and this is the wrong book to spend on. Save your money and move on! Buy an old text book at a cheaper price that includes all information about the subject.
