Gayle Lemmon is an incredible storyteller who weaves real people, events and scenes into story that feels like fiction, but isn't. I've traveled to Afghanistan multiple times in different capacities and feel like I've personnaly witnessed the scenarios she describes in her books. I am looking forward to reading anything she writes in the future as I've read both of her books so far and gave both the highest marks.

This book gives insight to the difficulty that war brings to women and children. This true account unveils the resilience of women in Afganistan of whom the government demeaned to women who could do nothing without a male escourt outside of the home for fear of severe physical punishment.
This book opened my eyes to the fate of many women in this world and to their creativity to overcome the odds against them.
I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because I found some of the writing repetitive. Overall, it is a book that all should read.

I read this shortly after reading "I am Malala." While such treatment of women appears to be accepted in radical Islam cultures, this story is more promotion for world government than an example of feminine courage.

Learn more about the Afghan people, especially the women who had held their families and the country together when the the Taliban took advantage of the chaos created by too many years of war and invaded and oppressed the citizens. Amazing story.

Well written extremely fast read and gives a tiny look at the difficulty of surviving under the Taliban
However, if this were not a true story would be very hard to believe that a simple young girl could accomplish so much regardless of how determined she was

I enjoy reading about and experiencing other cultures very much! This book explained the difficult lives of this family, in particular the five sisters and their need to work, study and help their friends and neighbors during the difficult period their country was going through! How wonderful to see their love for each other and their perseverance in the dressmaking "business"......all the while having to be so careful of their own safety and that of others as well! I enjoyed learning about their customs and their sense of 'community' A very inspiring true story!

This book was awesome, it was assigned reading for my daughter over the summer, it was recommended that parents read it too, Im so glad I did.
I have never felt a connection to people in other countries, their problems or solutions, this book really made me want to connect with the women in
the story, they are so brave. I would recommend this book for teens and adults, it is well worth the time.

A wonderful story of courage by young lady under the rule of the Taliban. It is based on a true historical period when the Taliban had control in parts of Afghanistan, and showed how this young lady helped her family by organizing sewing groups in their home, and managed to sell their products to merchants.

The true story about a family's struggle to survive in a wartorn area is such a timely topic. The news about violence against women around the world encourages us to stand for justice. This heartwarming story by a journalist tells of Kamila's expanding vision for the homebound women of Afghanistan as their dreams of university/careers are dashed by a fundamentalist government. Well written.

Wonderful story, based on actual lives of women in Kabul before, during, and after the Taliban. A must read if you want to understand another culture. Well written and flows easily. I highly recommend!

The author never went into detail about the lives of the characters. It would have made a better magazine article. Our book club was disappointed that it was just a repetition of day to day living. It could have had more of a story line instead of day to day life.
We overall rated it a 6 1/2 out of a total of 10.

Story line was interesting enough until the end. The ending was like a lot of books where the reader feels the author wanted to get it over and done with and just wrapped it up with much less thought than the guts of the story.

Really great read! The author did an amazing job of weaving the history of Afghanistan into Kamila's story. Kamila's strength and perseverance are inspiring. I learned so much about the history of the region and how women are treated.

I thoroughley enjoyed this book It was very informative and gave an incite to what Afgannie women have had to indur. My heart went out to them. But it shows the imagination and determination women can feel and do when it comes to helping fanily and putting food on the table.

This will put some human faces behind the news from Afghanistan. It made me realize how very fortunate we Americans are. Living separate d from parents at such a young age and making a living against tough laws.

Remarkable insight regarding daily life in an Afghan home and the struggles the people of Afghanistan face every moment. The hardship is underscored further by the determination of the characters to overcome and thrive despite restrictions of the Taliban.

A million times better than " I am Malala ". these women had it so much harder, and I think their story is a better example of a woman's life in the Middle East. don't get me wrong, Malala is a saint, but she had many more opportunities than most women in the Middle East.

This book is for women of all ages especially those who feel left out of their society. The importance of family, education, perseverance and the faith in one's God is an outstanding lesson from this book.

Great inspiration. Easy read. Promotes a better understanding of what life is like with the Taliban in control.
Amazing how one woman and her sisters find ways to help and train other women to provide for their families under very difficult circumstances.
