I stumbled upon this book by accident, having read a profound article that mentioned this book as one of its sources. I bough this book for less than 10 dollars and I must say, this is one of the best investments I have ever made. Easy to read, this book's ideas MAKE SENSE and are profound. I'd like to save my biggest reviews for one chapter only: Unlock your personality. I read this chapter at time when I was depressed, because I didn't get along with people too well. I was reserved, shy and was a social dud. My entire college years, I've been a social dud. My social life sucked. It sucked because I didn't know how to get along with people - I was irritable with people and might have appeared mean to many. The chapter: Unlock your personality might have changed my life. To follow the chapter and its advices precisely requires faith in yourself. A great leap indeed. Don't think, says the late Dr. Maltz -and act. Thinking only complicates things further. Don't think, don't over analyze yourself and just BE. It might as well be a magic bullet. It was for me, I think. Read that chapter over, and over, and over and it will eventually click. Be yourself is the message - and don't think. In social situations, don't think - and just be. Just be. Read the chapter, and you will understand what I mean. ;)

There are two versions of the book that look almost exactly the same on the outside but their contents are very different:
#1) "Psycho-Cybernetics" by Maxwell Maltz, M.D.,F.I.C.S [1960 ISBN 0671700758]
#2) "Psycho-Cybernetics" by Maxwell Maltz FOUNDATION & Bobbe Sommer [1993 ISBN 156731306X].

Make sure you get the original 1960 written by Maxwell himself. The 1993 "update" is so painful to read because the new author, Bobbe Sommer literally QUOTES Maxwell Maltz repeatedly while trying to add her own insightful messages. For example, on page 3 of her "update", she states:

"Whether we realize it or not," Maltz wrote, "each of us carries..."

Well, if you just read the original 1960's book, your eyeballs don't waste time on the "Maltz wrote" phrase altogether... duh!...because Maxwell was the one who wrote it!

The only reasons to endure Bobbe Sommer's endless "Maltz said....; Maltz learned that...; Maltz studied...; Maltz wrote...; Maltz realized..." is if she added some totally mindblowing ideas OR contradicted his work. In my opinion she didn't.

BTW, I was not prejudiced by reading the original first and then reading the 1993 update to see if it was any better; I actually (and unfortunately) read the 1993 book first. I thought the 1960 original was out of print but I accidentally stumbled on the original copy at Border's Books. I read a chapter and realized his true words were so much more inspirational. Not dry and academic like Bobbe Sommer's version. I think the publisher of the new book was deliberately trying to confuse the public by making the cover look the same as the old one. I think it's borderline unethical...buyer beware!

Apparently, the store's algorithm to link up user reviews with books is heavily based on the book's title. Most of the time, this works great when there's a paperback and a hardcopy version of the same book. But in this case, the 1960's book and the 1993 are completely different and should not point to the same user reviews! All the glowing reviews listed below? They are the same for both titles. You really don't know which book the reviewers were praising. I'm going to guess it's the 1960's version. See for yourself, plug in either ISBN #s and you'll get the identical list of user reviews.

BTW, this the store loophole gives me a great idea: I can write a new book about how to become a master at appraising and certifying jewelry like wedding bands and title it "Lord of the Rings"--and shazam--the store's engine will give my book the 5 stars and all the wonderful reviews of Tolkien's classic.

I give 5 stars for Maltz's 1960 original. I give 2 stars for Bobbe Sommer's update. Again, if the ISBN is 0671700758 click "add to cart". If it says ISBN 156731306X, try again.

Maxwell Maltz did an excellent job to expose how we can all achieve success through the right thinking and attitude. I would endorse this to anyone who has self esteem issues or problem behaviors. This book is the cure to all of that. To keep one's mind on track, I believe that this book should be read every 6 months so as to keep the mind in tune to thinking, breathin and becoming successful. It's just so impossible to put down.

This is a terrific book, filled with concepts that you can put to work right now. The knowledge contained in the work that Dr. Maltz has articulated is amazing. It is an entirely different and fresh way to look at life. You really owe it to yourself to make time to read it. I recommend it highly to everyone.

I love it because it breaks down different personality types and the characteristics/elements that are in each. Like- there are 7 common characteristics in the Success personal type.

Its amazing because I'm dyslexic and listening to any book before I read the actual text helps me understand.
Its cool because you can hear actual recordings of the author himself.

I do wish that it was an 'unabridged' version of the book. But that is my only complaint/ criticism.

I bought this through Audible. The narrator is nothing to be desired. Very monotone and uninteresting to listen to. I would suggest a different narrator and it's likely I would give this book 4 or 5 stars.

This book is a must read for understanding how to improve your self-esteem and how to reach your goals effortlessly. It sounds too good to be true, but it's not. It's just a matter of understanding how our brains work. We were created to live creatively, and this book reveals the importance of that truth! I highly recommend reading this!

A pretty good condensation that sums up the main principles of Malt'z groundbreaking book. I would use it as a companion to the original book though and not just rely on the tapes because the book is densely filled with helpful information not found in the tapes.

Looking forward to reading the original version by Dr. Malz. Like some other readers, I can sense the "new" sections that have been added and they interrupt the flow for me. This caused me to set the book down more and more as I read.

For some time after reading this book, I thought I will not need to read any other book, this is my bible. One of the best books written by someone who has the experience and knowledge in the field. A must read for people who are still trying to figure out who they are, and what they should do with their lives.

I would recommend this amazing book to every human on earth that is capable of reading. I bought a journal as to perform the exorcises in each chapter. The power of the "self-image" truly is more effective than most of us realize; until you read this book. GET IT

I used the advice presented in this book to bring about major change with great results at least twice.
First, when I sprained my knee and tore my ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament), I used the concept of striving towards a goal and thinking of my physical body as a servo-mechanism to heal myself. Where I got the method of healing is a whole 'nother story. But the concept of driving yourself towards an image of Health instead of trying to get away from disease really helped.

It no longer mattered what exactly was wrong with my knee - whether it was a partial or complete tear, or whether one or two menisci had been torn, and to which degree. The idea was to focus on the solution instead of the problem. It took me about 3 months to get back to living a normal life, where I could dance, run, and even do heavy squats again.

The second time I used this concept was when I had completely exhausted my system as a result of emotionally and physically draining work that I had been doing for a long time and for too many hours per week. At some point, all of a sudden, I got a whole host of physical and emotional problems, the worst of which was a pretty severe case of depression.

I changed my job, and went in for different therapies, some of which helped to a degree. But I attribute most of the success, especially in the emotional part, to Psychocybernetics. You see, different therapists analyzed my condition and tried to heal each of the causes that might have had an ill effect on me. This made me focus too much on the causes, which were the problem, instead of focusing on the solution.

Once again, I armed myself with Psychocybernetics and went to work. It took me about 3-4 months to feel almost 100% again. But the most important thing that I remember was that as soon I started to focus on the image of health and think about all the things I would do as soon as I was better, that's when my healing really took off.

Buy it. Use it.
Best,

Phil Saparov

A must read. This books explains how important is having and cultivating self image. In this society of capitalism we are always taught to listen to others in search for answers. the reality is that you have the answers but stop listening to yourself. Learn how to rediscover who you are and develop your self image to success.

I was looking forward to the original book with the forward from Melvin Power this book is not what I expected. Search carefully when looking for the original book. The book I received is more of a curation of different topics that Maltz discusses.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end! It brought about many aha moments, which I call spiritual awakenings. It makes you think, opening up your mind to new possibilities. We are conditioned beings, and now it's time to break free from those limitations!

I enjoy reading this book very much. I also have it on audio and listen to it in my car. It's good--but the ORIGINAL 1960 book by Maxwell Maltz is really the BEST ever! It's more direct and compact and delivers the message with greater power and emphasis!

Great book! Highly recommend read. You will never become more, than the image you hold within your mind! So basically, if you can't see yourself doing/being/achieving something, in your own mind...you will not succeed in that.... You have to see it and believe it in your mind first for it to come about. Self Image is so important and this book does a great job and explaining and a plan to change that self image.

Cybernetics for machines, applied to the human mind to help you understand you're basically a machine whose emotions are just feedback.
No previous cybernetic understanding necessary, but it does help..

The things that impressed me the most about this book are:

1. The age of it, combined with the nature of the information put forward by the author.
2. The fact that the author was a medical doctor (with a specialty in plastic surgery).

I really like that this information is so forward-thinking. Dr. Maltz was definitely a man who thought outside the box, and in this case, it's a good thing!

Finally, a book on positive thinking that can actually help. it relies
on conscious methods of re-programming yourself, not on any kind of self-hypnosis. There are tons of great and insightful reviews of other editions of this book, and I can't improve on them very much, but I will say that I have at least achieved fewer mental obstacles. I've only been using this method a couple of months, but it is nicer. Some hypnotists recommended to me that I get an older edition of this book, one that has not been messed with by any other additional authors, so I got this one.
It takes time to learn, and even be aware of the negative messages you give yourself, but it's worth it to do it all consciously until it all becomes second nature. I'm still working on it. This book is way better than anything Dale Carnegie ever wrote about positive thinking.

The subconscious mind is a powerful tool that can be used in everyday life for goal setting and achieving success through automatic behavior responses and your internal goal seeking mechanism. This is one of my favorite books and does an excellent job of explaining how your mind works and how to use it.
