The metaphors and similes in this book are as thick as a state park bait store minnow tank on the Friday morning of Memorial Day weekend, and as labored as a roofing crew spreading tar on a high school building on the last day of August. The book is about 50% too long, in desperate need of editing.

A note about the Audible recording (I switched between Kindle and audio as opportunity allowed): Metarie, Louisiana is not pronounced muh-TARRY, and shone is not pronounced Shawn. In fact, in the US, people I know most often say they shined the light, but whatever.

I disliked the main character and felt nothing for most of the other characters because there were so many of them it was impossible to develop them to any depth. My most common thought was, "Now who was that again?" Two delightful exceptions were Angel and Louis, who were so well written, they belong in Spenser's world (Robert B. Parker).

By the end I did not care who dunnit, I just wanted it to be over.

This book is the first in the Charlie Parker series. Chronicles Charlie's transition from drunk NYPD detective to the snarky, sober, hard nosed PI he becomes after the tragic murder of his wife and daughter. Charlie "Bird" Parker along with his friends, ex con Angel, assassin extraordinaire Louis, and Rachel help him hunt down The Traveling Man...the serial killer responsible for his wife and daughters murder. A great introduction to this series. A must read

Mr. Connolly writes well. The last book I read by him was a little gory but interesting. I did not realize how graphically gory this book would be. The abduction and mutilation of children as well as adults does not appeal to me at all. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is turned off by gore, which includes me.

I thought so highly of this book that I immediately went to ... to see if he had written anything else. He just released a new book and needless to say I ordered it. What an author- kept me up half the night and couldn't wait for the next day to continue. Any true mystery fan will love this book. I know I did.

I have read all of the Connolly Charlie Parker books and they all keep you on the edge of your seat. Parker and his sidekicks Louis and Angel keep the story moving and are thoughtful and interesting characters.

Loved it! Old style mystery novel with horrific bloody red herrings, multiple suspects and story lines with plenty of misdirections thrown in. Charlie Parker is a fantastic character. Can't wait to read the next one!

This book was a difficult read. A lot of characters that didn't seem well defined. A friend who has read every Charlie Parker book said to stick with it. She loves this character. I am reading the second one now and enjoying it much more. I'm glad my friend encouraged me to continue reading.

I could not find this one and finally ordered it. I really enjoy John Connolly's writing. If you have started on his books yet you are missing out. He writes well with a bit of the dark side. His characters are very well developed and he is on of those writters that once you start a book you better read fast because you won't be putting it down until it's done.
