Dean Koontz's Hideaway is an interesting, thrilling novel that explores the nature of good and evil. Koontz takes no shortcuts; he brings out the horror in every scene. The only fault was that, like much of his work, the conclusion was not totally satisfying. It builds us up for a gargantuam conclusion, but only gives us an abrupt, unmemorable ending. However, compared with all the other assets in the book, from the terrific heroes to the memorably sadistic villain, it hardly matters.

If you start reading this, expect to finish itin one go! It will grab your attention, from Hatch and Lindsey's car accident and his journey to Hell and back to the amusement park climax. It will put you in the twisted mind of a psycho killer and also in the mind of a man falling apart with his vision's of the killer's evil doings. It is truly terrifying and a thousand times better than the movie version(which boasted a great gothic/industrial metal musical soundtrack). READ THIS NOW! The best of Koontz!

He strikes again with this fantastic story that the movie made a mockery of. The concept totally misplaced. Real evil and terror of situations that are out there. Sometimes we hear about these, sometimes we're not. Other movies I've seen that didn't even come close to the evil perceived in this. Let's not forget the flip of the coin. The oldest battle in time- Good versus Evil. Who wins out? Who loses? What could you lose that you hold so dear to you? This story makes you think of all those little things that really matter. Read it and find out for yourself.

If you’re a serial killer lover, a thriller chaser, a supernatural addict, or just another Koontz fan, Hideway is definitely worth your time. The characters are well written, the suspense is tight, the pacing swift, the ending brutal, and the middle never lags one bit. As always, Koontz injects moral lessons in his work, and they're hard to miss, but never preached to you. This novel is not as dark as some of Koontzs other stuff, but the atmosphere fits the plot. Another Koontz for the shelf!

...And Dean Koontz crosses over it, again and again, in "Hideaway".
'The dead stay dead'...Or do they? After all, the hardworking folks in the medical profession are making new advances all the time, saving lives everyday. Though sometimes they must ask themselves, is every life worth saving?
Certainly that's the case in this spell-binding novel where we track the lives of two people, miraculously brought back from the other side. One a hard-working family man, the other a sociopathic killer.
You'll get inside their heads, learn what they think and how they feel. Then, watch in horrid fascination as their lives gradually intertwine, like the threads of a spider's web, until at last they come together in the ultimate battle of good verses evil.
This was one of the most well-written psychological thrillers that I've ever read. Dean Koontz has the ability to make his characters come alive. He lets us know them, makes us care what happens to them. Then puts them on the brink of danger, making it impossible not to fear for their safety. And, that's what makes this book so impossible to put down. It's a must-read for fans and new readers alike.

"Hideaway" is definitely among Koontz's best--and this is coming from a fan who has read every Koontz book published/reissued. His unpleasant imagination is on full display in this one. Unfortunately, the movie of the same name was lacking. I found it interesting that the sickest elements of this book, the symbolic murders, were pretty much left out of the movie. It's interesting that the man who wrote the screenplay for the movie also wrote the screenplay for the film "Seven"--where Koontz's symbolic murders were shown almost exactly. I found that very curious and wondered if Dean had anything to say about it. When will Hollywood make a great Koontz movie???

This Koontz thriller progressed slower than some of his other page-turners. It built a solid foundation on its 4 main characters, one of which represents the most evil of natures. The two protagonists, a husband and wife develop and endear themselves to the reader as they seek to understand and then vanquish the evil presence that has attached itself to their lives following the husband's deadly experience. The climax of this book makes it a suspenseful, worthwhile read.

Hideaway is an example of Koontz at his best. The emotion in this book ebbs and flows in waves. One minute I was crying the next I was laughing. A perfect balance of humor (usually dark humor) with the initially terrifying parts of the novel. You can't have a good book without both. The characters were well developed and wholely believable. The religious slant on the book lends a light to Koontz literature that I have never before seen. The incorporation of God and the Catholic church into the scene was a masterpiece. Perhaps you would not find this book exciting if you were not into the incorporation of religion in any form into a book; but each to their own.

Deep suspense. How are two lives thrown together? Why is the young man a killer? Why is the other man seeing things? Will they ever meet? Almost makes one cringe in sheer terror, as each chapter unfolds and each step is paved for more questions and more horror. Mr. Koontz......another job well done.

I have read every Dean Koontz book published to date. "Hideaway" was the darkest and most brilliant story ever. I have read it at least 5 times. It was gory, scary, intriguing and a wild ride all the way. Dont waste your time watching the movie version though, it was lame.

I thought the book was very thought provoking, especially considering the mystical quality of the book. Koontz delves into the question of the existence of a higher power (God) and the existence of an evil higher power (Satan). Few authors are bold enough to take this challenge

I loved this book!! I havent bothered to sit down and read a book in years. My friend once recommended Dean Koontz and now i know why. This book was compelling from start to finish. Vassago's character still gives me the creeps. Coming from the San Bernardino area didnt help either. While reading, i was able to picture every act he commited. Although a figure to hate and remorse, i could not help but admire the fellow. The way the entire plot fits into all the characters is outstanding. Im now reading The Bad Place and now my admiration is leaning towards Candy. I plan on purchasing many of his books in the future. If only they made a movie!!!

I luckily listen to the book on tape before seeing the dreadful movie. This is a terribly funny book inbetween some really scary moments. The end is a bit much but overall it's delightful. The movie is in no way like the story (Think King's Deloris Claiborne). Enjoyable.

I've had HIDEAWAY sitting around the house for years. It's been on my stack of "eventual reads" and decided to get it out of the way (as in reading so it could be put). I haven't read anything by Mr. Koontz in ages...and ages. I got exactly half way through and realized that, although I had no difficulty turning pages, his style of writing was completely lacking in soul. Has his writing always been stilted? And he is WAY TOO wordy! Now don't get me wrong, Mr. K must be doing something right. His efforts have afforded him what is, undoubtedly, an ultra comfortable living and lifestyle. At one time, early in my reading career, I rather enjoyed him. But I can't recommend this one.

what a great story! koontz has done it again with his depiction of the supernatural, twisted side of his characters, resulting in a suspenseful page turner. very interesting story line with a powerful ending. the quick changes between scenes toward the end of the book makes it a very difficult one to put down!

This is an amazing book and would highly recomend it to anyone. I read this book in 36 hours because I could not put it down. Koontz is a wonderful writer who grabs you by the throat and dosn't let go. I have read many books by Dean Koontz, Stephen King, and John Saul but this book by far has installed more fear and wonder than anything else. There was a movie made featuring Alicia Silverstone titled Hideaway and am embarrased to have wasted my time on watching the movie when all they did was brutally dismantel the creative genius of Koontz. If you haven't read this book then you must read it, if you have the book then read it again!

As a addict of mystery and suspense novels, I picked up my first Dean Koontz book not knowing what to expect. Hideaway is nothing short of a masterpiece! I literally could not put this book down. I even took it into the bathroom with me! If this book would be made into a movie, it would surely be a smashing success. If you have never read any of Dean Koontz' work, I highly suggest starting out with this one. It really gets you thinking. I can't wait to start my next one!

As I love to read horror, especially the popular authors such as King, Cornwell, Straub, and Mccammon, imagine my surprize to be so disappointed in such a bestselling author! It wasn't a bad story, but I thought his writing style disinteresting. I loved his villian though, so I might read more of his stuff, if it's in the bargain bin.

I was expecting something cool to happen but it never did. The book has an amazing first few pages, then starts talking about one topic for like a million pages & it gets old. "Funhouse" by Dean Koontz is actually a better book if that says anything.

Dean Koontz wrote a terrific novel in Hideaway. I recall Koontz saying he wasn't pleased with the outcome of the movie, which starred Jeff Goldblum and Alicia Silverstone (to name a few). I have to agree the novel was better than the movie.

Hideaway is a suspence and thrill novel that has you on the edge of your seat the hole time. I have read many suspence and thrill novels and none have quite measured up to this one. It has you wanting to know more the minute you start the book. It even gives you the feeling as you are actually there going through everything with Hatch and Lindsay. I would definantly recommend this novel for everyone to read!

This book is up there with the suspense of Midnight and the religious theme of Sole Survivor. This book poses the questions of is there life after death and how the constant forces of good and evil inherent in mankind interact.

Dean Koontz takes a very contriversal subject and turns it into a horror story above all horror stories. This book really makes you wonder if monsters like this really exist but is real enough that I pick up the paper and expect to see Vassago there. The plot was at first confusing then it settled into fast paced wonder. I've read this book time and time again. Each time I get chills.

I have just recently started reading Koontz novels. I am hooked! I am not one to write long reviews, so just let me say this is a must read. You are hooked from the first page and it is a thrill ride all the way. I loved the ending. If you are a fan of suspense and horror don't miss this one! Dean Koontz at his best. Enjoy!

This book had some promising ideas, and in the hands of someone else (me or Stephen King) could have been excellent. It was far more shallow than it could and should have been. When I was at school, I would write long stories, and finish them abruptly when told I had half an hour. This must have happened here. Koontz was bored, and finished off quickly, while reading something better.

Hideaway is and always be (in my opinion) Dean Koontz's best book. You are spellbound right from the beginning and all the way through till the end. The way he plays the good against evil is truly brilliant because it is so against the norm and the old good and evil cliche. A must read

Koontz's ability to paint with words is excelled in this work only by the gripping nature of the plot and the three dimensionality of the lead characters.Again, an excellent read to any Dean Koontz cultist..uhhh..fan

If you want a scare of magnanimous proportions, then here it is. Imagine reaching into the black soul of a vile murderer, knowing his inner thoughts and desires, and being unable to stop the ghastly visions. This is the plight of our unlikely hero, Hatch Harrison. This novel is the classic tale of good vs. evil, twisted to the point where the protagonist is trapped in the mind of the villain, and the only escape is death...but for whom?
