I've just started reading urban fantasy, mainly with the Dresden files, and have been looking around for other books to read. I'm loving this book, and cant wait for the next one to come out on the 30 of july.

After reading the first Kate Daniels book "Magic Bites" I bought the next three in the series and I am hooked. If snappy comebacks, great action, tight twisty plots, and a barrel of colorful characters is what you're looking for, than step right up. Be prepared to enter Atlanta and never want to leave.

I really enjoyed each installment of the series. I like stories that have solid realistic characters. I really like stories with a strong female lead. This story has it all. Kate is a great heroine, flaws and all. I love her vulnerability, her practicality, and her courage. I love her dedication to her friends and the continual relationship with the orphan girl.

The plot was fine, no complaints there. I enjoyed the integration of different cultural mythologies, unique and much appreciated. This series is really one of the better series I've read.

~*~*~ SPOILER ALERT ~*~*~

There was only one thing that I didn't care for too much and that was the heroine's developing romantic interests for Curran. Curran is the Beast Lord, the Alpha of all of the shifters who live by the code.

I didn't care for this because throughout the first two installments Curran has threatened and even attempted to kill Kate. In one particular instance if he had not been restrained he might have accomplished it. I don't like the idea of a relationship that has that kind of history. It seems a little...I don't know what's the word...misguided and crazy for the heroine to get involved. I understand that she may overly work his nerves and he may want to strangle her which he is entirely capable of doing as he has shown. Since he has done it before, is there any guarantee he won't act on those feelings again? What's to stop him, especially when he has trouble controlling himself? I was surprised this didn't cross our heroine's mind as a reason not to involve herself with him. I thought it warranted great consideration, almost as much as her heritage. Violence in a relationship is just not cool. Yes, I know he has saved her but if I remember correctly his attempt to kill her was subsequent to one of his rescues.

Then there is his clear violations of her privacy, he enters her home without her knowledge even while she sleeps. This is not okay in my opinion. Yes, he uses the excuse of looking after her safety and it was even explained (not very clearly though) as some mating ritual. I didn't really buy that and even if I did, still the idea of him creeping around her home without her knowledge shows a clear lack of respect for the boundaries she set up and is a bit obsessive and stalkerish. Again, not okay.

I like Curran, I just don't like him for Kate. Though, it's pretty clear the two will end up together at some point with him calling her his mate and all and she being drawn to him despite the aforementioned and his promiscuity. I do have a question about that, what the hell is up with the mate thing with Curran? Is there a difference between a mate and consort for him? Or are they one and the same?

This series really is a good series, the above is just my opinion and one thing that bothered me about it. It's really minor, minor enough for me to stay with the series. I just wanted to give a completely honest review of how I felt. Anyway, happy reading.

I liked Magic Bites. Magic Burns was better. Magic Strikes is the best so far. Read these in order. Kate Daniels world is both unique and familar. This author (actually two authors) writes terrific fantasy.

It's no surprise that I'm writing a review for this book. I've reviewed Ilona's books before and have always had good things to say about the writing and the plots. This time, I'll say it again... fantastic writing and a great plot.

What I like about book three is that we're seeing more of Kate and her relationships. Yes, there is action and intrigue but more importantly, there's a sense of Kate becoming more open to being entangled with the people around her. She fights for her place in others' lives here. People are important and she's as much a guardian of the people she's taken into her life as she is the nameless faces that she protects.

I prefer character-driven stories and Ilona Andrews delivers this type of story with a generous helping of cohesive plotline. Add into the mix, a conflicted world of magic and tech and you've got the recipe for a fantastical world that Kate Daniels lives in.

I'm not going to give out spoilers. I dislike reading reviews where the person spews out every last detail of the story but suffice it to say; Kate decides who is important to her in her life... and really, goes into action without much thought to her own safety. I enjoyed the tension in this story and the tightness of the writing was a delight to read. I could envision what was happening from the descriptions on the page and there are scenes that I could swear I could smell and taste the surroundings.

Brilliant writing and a fantastic step towards the main character's development.

Good book. I've gotten multiple copies just so I can give them to people I think would enjoy it. Pick it up. Spend an evening with Kate Daniels and submerge yourself into Ilona Andrews' Atlanta.

I enjoyed the author's other Edge book series very much and recommend it to anyone that likes fairy tales.

Having nothing else to read, I read this series. It is readable, but did not love it.

4.5-5 stars

This is a great story and continuation of Kate's series. Kate's friend Derek gets himself into some trouble and it leads to the exposure of a group intent on taking out the shifters. Kate and a number of others are forced to take extreme measures and enter an underground fight tournament to take care of this group.

Things between Curran and Kate escalate. They haven't moved far but Curran has stealthily made it clear that he's definitely interested in Kate and his future mate and is actively (if quietly) pursuing her. We learn more about Kate's past/background and why she hides from notice (which is a big part of why she resists Curran's advances). Kate doesn't do very well at keeping herself unnoticed though and has to make some moves to save her friends that brings truly threatening notice her way that I'm sure will come back to haunt her in the future.

Overall, this was a really enjoyable and engaging story with great characters. Kate is awesome but the secondary characters are great as well and really help to flesh out the story and make it better. I love this series and would recommend it. :)

* note - I listened to the audio version of this and the narrator is great.

With each new book, I like Kate more and more. At first she sort of rubbed me the wrong way, but now I am 100% on board. She’s tough, takes crap from nobody, and manages to get herself in the most magnificent situations.

This book revolves around a supernatural gladiator-like battle that is illegal, the pack has banned everyone from participating, and is filled with all sorts of strange oddities. Ultimately, this book can really be distilled down into “Kate risks everything to protect her friends.” The first friend(-ish) person that drags Kate into this danger is everyone’s favorite shapeshifting nightmare. He/She/Idontknowhowtoidentify somehow ends up with Derek in custody and trades a favor for a favor.

This type of thing usually ends badly for Kate and this is no exception. She’s tasked with going to these illegal games which tips her further into badness as the matches go on. What harm could possibly come from passing a note and attending some fighting matches, right? Well, this is Kate we’re talking about so obviously she discovers a bunch of mythological creatures that need stopping. Should someone else be in charge of doing that? Of course not!

So what’s the bigger story at play? Well, other than my never ending desire to see Curran and Kate end up together, we get a lot of side character awesomeness. There’s a vegetarian shapeshifter we meet, Derek gets some unwelcome spotlight, Andrea and Raphael dance around one another in an amazing way, and as a bonus we get a lot more backstory from Kate. All in all, this was a great book, with a super awesome ending. I’m diving right from this book into some Curran POVs and then into the short story in between. There better be more hotness!

Magic Strikes (2009) is the third Fantasy novel in the Kate Daniels series, following Magic Burns. The initial volume in this sequence is Magic Bites.

In the previous volume, Jim woke Kate at two in the morning. He had a job for them. They negotiated the split in the fees.

After settling on a fifty-fifty split, Jim said that they were after an magical arsonist. They departed for an underground parking lot. The arsonist threw fireballs at them.

He had a salamander in a glass sphere. He stalked Kate as Jim closed in on him. Kate was more afraid of breaking the sphere than the arsonist's fireballs.

Jim grabbed the throat of the arsonist. He dropped the sphere, but Kate caught it. The arsonist had a crossbow bolt in his back. Then Jim's pager went off and he left Kate with the dead arsonist.

Kate cut off the arsonists head and took it to the Guild. The Guild clerk gave her forms to fill out and then paid her an advance on the bounty. She mentally divided the hundred dollars among her overdue bills as she left the building.

In this novel, Kate Daniels is a Mercenary specializing in magic. She had been in the Order, but quit due to its regimentation. Now she is the Order's liaison with the Pack.

Curran is the Beast Master. He is the leader of the shapeshifters.

Jim is a shapeshifter. He is a jaguar and also Kate's partner.

Maxine is the secretary at the headquarters of the Atlanta Chapter of the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid. She is a telepath.

Andrea is a Knight of the Order. She had been exposed to the Lycos Virus. She was transferred to Atlanta and restricted to headquarters while waiting to see if she is infected. She is a werehynea, but is hiding it from the Order.

Julie Olsen is the teenage daughter of Jessica. Her mother was an amateur witch. Now Julie has Kate as her adopted aunt.

Saiman is a shapechanger. He can take any form. He lives in Champion Heights, the former Lenox Point building,

In this story, Kate is trying to talk an old lady banshee down from a utility pole. She puts up a ladder and tells her that it is very sturdy. The old lady lets out a wail has the dogs and a wolf howling in harmony. Then the magic ends.

Kate puts back the ladder and goes back to her mule. Marigold has a swastika painted on her rump in green paint. A paint stick was laying on the ground, along with some blood and a tooth.

The magic has been down for two months. When it came back, the people of Atlanta had numerous problems. Kate has been working night and day since Wednesday. Now it is Friday and Kate is thinking about showers, bed and a piece of apple pit.

Maxine interrupts her thoughts to notify her of a dead shapeshifter at the corner of Ponce de Leon and Dead Cat. Kate heads for the location of the incident. On the way, she checks the ID of two lost vampires.

At the crime scene, she finds Jim's crew looking for clues and cleaning up the site. She sees one of the crew pick up a human arm. The crime is now murder, but Jim insists that it is Pack business.

An hour later, Kate left Marigold in the parking lot and climbed the stairs to her apartment. she checks the refrigerator, but the last slice of pie is gone. She sheds her clothes and takes a shower.

As she is rubbing a towel in her hair, the phone rings. Saiman has caught Derek breaking into his home. Kate dresses and heads toward Champion Heights.

She gets there an hour after midnight. Derek in a loup cage, but tells her that he can handle the situation. Saiman wants her to escort him to the Midnight Games.

When she agrees, Saiman releases Derek and gives her the evidence of his break in. As they are leaving the area, Derek asks for a pen. He writes a note and asks her to give it to a girl at the Games.

Saiman sends over a light green outfit for her to wear. It makes her look like arm candy. Saiman says that he doesn't want anybody to know that she is his bodyguard.

Meanwhile, Andrea wakes Kate in her office at the Order. Kate comes within an inch of stabbing her in the throat. Andrew has come to take her to lunch.

Kate has put Julie in a special school. Julie is getting along with the staff, but having problems with some of the other students. Kate visits the school and backs up Julie's stories.

This tale takes Kate to the Games. She is ambushed by a man in the parking lot. Derek is badly beaten and in a coma unable to change. He is slowly dying.

Jim confesses that he is going behind Curran's back to protect Derek. His crew have kidnapped Doolittle to treat Derek. Kate wants to slaughter a team at the Games.

Curran is still stalking Kate. The next installment in this sequence is Magic Bleeds.

Highly recommended for Andrews fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of magical powers, various shapeshifters, and other supernaturals. Read and enjoy!

As this series grows, the authors incorporate more and more mythology which I find fascinating and fantastic. I love how each book incorporates different villains from different mythologies and how many overlap and intertwine. The concept of magical battle cage matches is extremely brutal. If you didn't know what kind of urban fantasy world Kate is living in before now, you will have no doubt by the end of this book.

There are even more pieces of the puzzle laid out during this novel about Kate's life before the series started. So I still have a lot of questions, but the action packed installments also resolve on their own. There is plenty to keep me interested while I wait for more pieces to fall into place. In the mean time Magic Strikes absolutely ripped my heart out. What hurts Kate hurts me and it hurt even more to know one of my favorite characters was attacked in this book as you see in the description. The action takes place in the battle arena and outside of it.

On a lighter note the sexual tension in this book is as thick as pea soup and I was dying to get to the next book when I finished this one. Curran has won me over (many times over) so we will see if he also wins over Kate. My fingers are crossed.

I love this series. It is one of the most engaging and thrilling series I've ever read and I will be very sad when I run out of books.

Most of the way through the book I felt this was a four star book - then . . . they did it. The Ilona Andrews team drew it into a five star in a big way. Tension, grins, laugh out loud, tension again, and ending with a big smile. I'm not going to summarize the story line, that was done up above and many times over by other reviewers. I will simply say that this story-line is great! I love the conflict, the humor, the battle scenes, and really . . . the tension between Kate and Curran. No throwing them into bed right off the bat (nice slow tension building - gets the anticipation going). Kate is strong and independent but finds herself making friends despite herself. The cast of characters is awesome, a well defined group that you can't help but love.

My full review can be found on my blog, Reader Rayna, as well as my Goodreads.

This third book in the series was really good. It had a lot of action and a lot more build up of who Kate is, why her blood is so important, and more of her backstory, too. Not only did she prove to really be a badass once again, she also proved how much she actually cares about others. She's mentioned multiple times that she doesn't want to care because bad things usually happens to those she does care about - and something bad did happen - but she managed to help out and save people and all that jazz.

She wasn't the only hero, though, as Curran stepped in, too, and we also got to see more action from other characters that were previously introduced, such as Jim, Andrea, and Raphael. I appreciated the fact that it wasn't all just Kate doing the badassery type of things.

This book definitely wasn't short on action or plot, and I really like how each book has its own subplot that encompasses the bigger plot of the series. The bigger plot was hinted at more in this book and we were introduced to a few more characters who will most likely become important later down the road.

The romance also became much more apparent in this book, which I appreciated. And the sexual tension is growing immensely. So that'll be fun.

Overall, I enjoyed this installment and I'm very excited to see what happens next, because that epilogue made me laugh and also curious.

I wonder when I will tire of Kate and the weirdos that she seems to attract... Not sure I will ever be able to, but I'm not even willing to try!

Curran looked back at me. "Why is it you always attract creeps?"

"You tell me." Ha! Walked right into that one, yes, he did.

Kate Daniels has her hands full trying to keep Curran away, her kid close, and be generally safe. In this book, she enters an illegal fighting contest with Jim and many shapeshifters that we know and love - as well as some we meet for the first time - in order to avenge Derek, her werewolf sidekick, and prevent some creatures called Rakshasas from obtaining a gem that will make them invincible against shapeshifters. But forces even more dangerous than the ones she thought have a strange interest in those games of death. Forces that she knows better than most - and that she believed had escaped from...

I'm gonna give it a shot and try to write a review short and sweet here. Why? Because I don't think there's much to say at this point without fangirling!

Kate is magnificent as always. Strong, independent, and loyal to a fault, she never fails to make the best heroine there is! Add in her brilliant sense of humor, and her creativity when it comes to threatening or torturing, and you can understand why I love this woman so much. She's my female IT!

Curran was also wonderful. I think the man keeps improving. He still has some Alpha issues, but at least he's trying. Plus, now that he openly shows how much he wants Kate, it's freaking hilarious to see the banter between them! I just wonder when they will screw each other against a wall, because, with that attitude from both of them, it's bound to happen!

"To answer your question, yes, you may kiss my ass. Normally I prefer maintain my personal space, but you're a Friend of the Pack and your services have proven useful once or twice. I strive to accommodate the wishes of persons friendly to my people. My only question is, would kissing my ass be obeisance, grooming, or foreplay?"

"You thought about dragging me into your bed this morning."
"I thought about stabbing you and running away screaming. You broke into my house without permission and slobbered all over me. You’re a damn lunatic! And don’t give me that line about smelling my desire; I know it’s bulls***."
"I didn’t need to smell you. I could tell by the dreamy look in your eyes and the way your tongue licked the inside of my mouth."

Speaking of banter, it wasn't only funny - at some parts, it was really hot! And don't even remind me of the tub scene...

Before wrapping this up, I want to talk about Derek. Yes, it's well known I'd ride that wolf with no moral restraint despite the age difference. He's really my type! Still, now that he's scarred and has a deeper voice.... *sighs* Ilona Andrews, no mercy at all, huh? Derek became eeven more perfect, and I'm dying at the fact he's fictional!

Go read the book ASAP - or the first one, if you were dense enough to miss it! There's now way to get bored with Kate as your main gal!!!

The Ilona Andrews team has written another excellent novel. You start reading and become totally involved/immersed in this world of a Magic/Tech. I love the continuing development of Kate and Curran's relationship. This takes it one step further into the direction most all of the fans have been hoping for. The novel also shows us more of what the pack members are in character, fighting skills and develops the storyline for an
eventual showdown between Kate and her father as she meets Hugh D'Ambray ( the successor to Voron and a major figure in Roland's army) for the first time.
I don't want to give any spoilers but the storyline involves Derek playing knight errant to a damsel in distress and causing some members of the Pack to go 'rogue' to try to avenge and help him by joining a Gladiatorial Event that takes Extreme Fighting to its natural conclusion when you have magic, swords and assorted weaponry involved.
To top it off, Curran gets involved as he had issued an edict that would condemn any Pack member who involved themselves in these games to death.
Andrews does not disappoint as we read our way through this book as we are never talked down to and more and more information is given to us about Kate, Curran, Jim, Dr. Dolittle and so many others who we start caring about as well.
Can't wait to go on from here.

Derek is fighting for his life, Jim's gone rogue, Curran is staking his claim on Kate and Saiman shows his true form. Oh yes, a lot takes place in this book.

I will say that this series tends to get better with every book but I'm still not really seeing the hype. Yes it's a good urban fantasy with a lot of action and a sexy lion shifter but I guess I'm just not getting the Curran swoon like everyone else. Yes, he's Alpha male and doesn't take orders from anyone, except maybe Kate, but it's already been done before. I was looking for something fresh and new.

My favorite part of the book was the Midnight Games. It's a suped up version of gladiator games. People are thrown in the pit and fight until the death. Naturally what starts as a simple observatory outing, turns into participation at one point. The fighting was definitely the highlight for me.

Another quality of the book that I enjoy is the humor. It's not bust your ribs laugh worthy but it did manage to get a few chuckles out of me. Kate does not take well to people telling her what to do. So of course her and Curran butt heads a lot. So a lot of the humor comes when she and Curran are dealing with each other.

"Can I fetch you your food, Your Majesty? Can I tell you how strong and mighty you are, Your Majesty? Can I pick out your fleas, Your Majesty? Can I kiss your ass, Your Majesty? Can I..."

"Technically it should be 'may I', since you're asking permission. To answer your question, yes, you may kiss my ass. Normally I prefer to maintain my personal space, but you're a Friend of the Pack and your services have proven useful once or twice. I strive to accommodate the wishes of persons friendly to my people. My only question is, would your kissing my ass be obeisance, grooming, or foreplay?"

I hope that since Curran has pretty much won the game, the romance between the two will kick up a few notches and I will understand what all the swooning is about. Until then, I guess I will just have to wait until the next book.

Okay so I really enjoyed this book because I have been dying to know what happens between the beast Lord and Kate. Which I did and I'm not telling. I really enjoyed the complexity of emotions that were at play with this point in the story plot. It really gave better insight to the characters backgrounds and helped fill out some loose ends in that regards. I'm glad it introduced some critical players that will help the series continue and really get the ball rolling. I feel like this is the rising point and expect greater things in the books to come. I didn't feel like anything was lacking which in some books by the third book you kinda feel trapped into reading the rest just because you started and this definitely didn't feel that way. The complexity of magic and mythological creatures blend really well with the route of the plot. I didn't feel as if it stumbled out of nowhere and just tried to make it work. I laughed a great deal more in this book as well and I think the internal dialogue as well as the external really was exceptional. Overall this is a series I would recommend to any paranormal, shifter, romance, and magic lover.

MAGIC STRIKES is the third book in the Kate Daniels series. I highly recommend this series if you like creative urban fantasy with a side of kickbutt heroine, sizzling chemistry, and non-stop action.

In MAGIC STRIKES, we at last learn more about Kate and her background. Previous books in the series had some clues, but here we get the full story. Why Kate is so careful about never leaving her blood or any traces of it around. Why Kate knows so much about the powerful, mysterious, and secret leader of the People. And why Kate is a loner, which might be the most important information of all, since she bucks all of her life experience and training to help her friends.

Kate doesn’t have many friends, you see, so when Derek ends up nearly dead, she’s willing to take part in a deadly tournament to get revenge on his attackers. The bad guys in MAGIC STRIKES are inspired by Hindu mythology, and damn, they were creepy and scary, but also cool. I like how the author never sticks with the traditional Western European baddies, but draws inspiration from all over the globe.

I enjoyed every aspect of MAGIC STRIKES, from watching Kate’s protective side come out again to seeing her growing friendships with a variety of Pack members. Julie from MAGIC BURNS even makes a cameo appearance; I was happy to see her again. And I can’t forget the romantic relationship developing between Kate and Curran. I’m not always a fan of romances, but I appreciate that this one hasn’t been rushed, and that Kate doesn’t lose herself whenever Curran shows up. She admits she’s attracted to him, but she doesn’t let that attraction override her brain.

The ending made me snort with laughter. I’m not going to spoil, but it’s *good.* That’s just one more thing I like about Ilona Andrews’ writing — it makes me laugh all the time, even in the middle of a dangerous action scene or when Kate’s just sitting in her apartment.

~ 5 Magic Strikes Stars ~
(No Spoilers)

A FANTASTIC read in Urban Fantasy where magic, mystery, and technology blend together into a fast-paced action-packed adventure.

Magic Strikes is book three in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Their is no rest for Kate and her friends as we are thrown back into Atlanta, with new players wreaking destruction and a highly illegal underground game.

Kate is one kick-ass heroine that I thoroughly enjoy reading. She has heart, a core of steel, and moves to back herself up. I like her character development. In this one she is trying to adjust to having friends and people she cares about. All her life she was told to never make friends or have a relationship, so for her this is new and goes agents what she was taught. The author gives us more information on Kate’s past, who she really is, and why she tries to stay hidden. As things go you can not hide forever and the choices she makes will expose her to her enemies. Her relationship with Curren is also changing. He’s chasing/courting her as a shifter would and she is totally in denial. I am enjoy how this relationship is progressing and developing.

The author introduces us to more characters that we will be seeing in future installments. Saiman makes more of an appearance in the novel and we get one BIG SURPRISE from him. Jim opens up to us a little about his past. This is something unusual for his character, because he is very closed off with everyone. Last, the author gives us more information about Roland. All the secondary characters are enjoyable and entertaining.

The foreshadowing in Magic Strikes is out of this world and the ending was superb. I am hooked and can’t wait to read the next installment. What a wild adventure!

A FABULOUS read! If you enjoy Urban Fantasy, then this series is a must read. The Andrews team have created a unique in-depth world full of mystery, magic and technology blended together for an action-packed non-stop adventure.

This is currently my favorite Urban Fantasy series, having displaced Kim Harrsion's Hollows books after the lackluster last outing in that series. To some extent Andrews has followed Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden formula -- introduce the character, have a few introductory adventures to build the supporting cast and get a feel for the lead's capabilities and issues and then start to open up the series "meta plot" as the character faces wider issues.

Kate is a very appealing, snarky character who lives in an intriguing world where magic rises and falls in tides which have greatly disrupted (but not destroyed -- people cope) our civilization. Were-hyenas and vampires may roam Atlanta, but people still eat grits and cornbread. For reasons that are finally becoming more clear in this book, Kate has long been a loner, a mercenary who solves magical problems, but in the first book she started to come out of her shell, and that has continued over the next two books and into this one as she gains friends and allies.

In my opinion, the love interest is well handled as well. It's been obvious from book one what's going to happen, but Andrews is in no hurry, and has been content to keep Curran as (a very effective) supporting character rather than letting him drive out all the other supporting characters. This lets Kate have satisfying emotional connections apart from her supposed love interest (her final scene with Bran in the previous book for instance) and differentiates the series from "Supernatural Romance".

The ending of this book pretty much tears the veil off Kate's self-imposed low profile and sets things up for a major confrontation in the coming books.

Kate finds herself in the middle of pack business when Derek is tragically hurt. Jim tries to protect the pack behind Curran’s back and there has been a murder.

Kate once again puts herself in danger for her friends, as she demands vengeance and tries to protect Curran and his pack. The plot was action-packed as we find ourselves in the middle of the Midnight Games. The games feature a gladiator type arena where shifters and other supernatural creatures compete. The stakes are high and the betting is of the chart. It is also a place that Curran has strictly forbidden pack involvement. I found myself standing still in the middle of my chores totally caught up in the tale and holding my breath.

Andrews keeps the action at full throttle even as she continues to develop Kate. I loved the softer sides of our snarky heroine. Andrews gaves her wings and allowed her to fly. It was so impressive. Curran continues to make me swoon. He is a fearless alpha, quick to temper and cocky as hell, but we see his softer side as well. The interaction between them is positively delightful. I found myself giggling at their banter. His mannerisms and her inner banter are things of pure joy.

Andrews weaved in a little Hindu along with some Greek and Norse mythology. I love that the tale is grounded more in shifter history with the magic woven into it. We learn more about Kate’s reasons for burning her blood and what she is. Dark, gritty, bloody and heart stopping at times Magic Strikes was perfectly balanced with humor, friendship and snark. The ending was perfect and had me giggling.

This is the third book I read of this series and I'm getting more addicted to it. I started reading Ilona Andrews this year and honestly think that after this series is over I will start another from her.

The writing is very fluid and you can read the book very well. One of the things I liked the most was the fact that there was no dead time in the story, there was always something happening, which gives me nerve racking because I can not stop reading, or stop at the end of a chapter, I want more, to know what happens next. The action scenes are very descriptive and there are a lot of these scenes throughout the book.

Kate is a really bad-ass, but it is also a soft heart and I think that's what makes her more human and one of my favorite characters. There are many heroines who are or want to be bad girls and turn out to be empty heads.
Kate is not like that, she is very well written, is one of those characters that makes you want to know her. I loved it when she goes to Julie's school and do that whole scene to stop the humiliation from her school colleagues. I loved it, I laughed so much.

Curran, gods, according to Kate, he is beautiful and has a phenomenal body but is more stubborn than a mule. I think all fuss he makes around her is because he is a shapeshifter and have those rules that govern all animals and the pack. He likes her and she's so afraid of him, it's funny to read through it.

I love the scenes between the two of them, I'm always waiting for it to appear. This also brings another positive aspect of the whole series, there is no love triangle, they do not fall in love with each other immediately when they meet and what they feel for each other evolves with time and slowly. Perhaps to much slowness because we are in the 3rd book and things are still warm not hot.

This is one of those books that you do not notice the time pass and when we reach the end only think "Is it over? I want more, it can't end now"
I recommend reading this book to anyone who wants to have a good time and meet fantastic characters, is really a story that holds us from the first book.

First Thought when Finished: I am sucked in y'all! SUCKED IN!

Quick Thoughts: Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews had me on the edge of seat, laughing out loud, and fanning myself (often all 3 within a matter of 30 minutes). How can you not love a world and characters that make you feel like that multiple times during a story. So far each book has been better than the last!

Renee ROCKED IT! <----enough said!

Part of my Read It, Rate It, File It, DONE! reviews

Note: I would have said more about this book but everything is so spoilery. Like I was pretty sure I was going to cry if a certain someone bit it. I also had to laugh when at the end a certain someone was clueless. Also all the quips! The dressing down. ANDREA (no seriously she is one of my favorite characters of all time). So lots to say but just don't want to ruin it! Just listen to it if you haven't already. Relisten if you have cause you know you want too!

I finished the book with a smiling face and the urge to dance around. Despite how little Curran appeared, which made me frustrated, he made every scene counted. OHMYGOD! I can't stop smiling while I'm typing this. I liked the way these two danced and dodging around each other. Kate stepped back and Curran would stepped forward with one step ahead. OMGkdfjgsdkfgh

The writing style was better in this book. I've come to realize that Kate is really powerful. I still couldn't get my head around of who was Roland. But from what Kate revealed little by little I started to get a picture. I practically liked almost every character in this book. At least every one who is on Kate's side. I can see that the story led little by little to the day she has to face Roland. I'm so happy that I have three more book to read.

By the way, as a book lover, what Raphael did at Andrea's house made me squee! I totally can relate to that. She finally got all the books of your favorite author and he gave it to her in style. Oh, my. *sigh*

Peace officer Kate Daniels leads a pretty interesting life. Employed by the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, it's her job to clean up magic gone wrong and to get rid of monsters. It's no easy task. Menacing creatures are plentiful and those in control are extremely powerful.

Kate finds herself helping the Pack (a group of shape shifters) after one of their own has been murdered. Although the Pack doesn't want her involved, she's inevitably drawn into their business when a dangerous group of mythological creatures called the Rakshasa want to annihilate every member of the Pack. To do this they must win a very large and powerful topaz through a gladiatorial tournament. When one of Kate's friend is nearly killed by a Rakshasa, she makes it her mission to help annihilate this bunch. But Kate has another worry. She suspects that the person ordering the Rakshasa to acquire the topaz is her biological father, who happens to be one of the nastiest and most powerful creatures alive. He doesn't know she's around, but if he finds out, he'll want her dead.

Magic Strikes is an imaginative story filled with strange and menacing creatures set around the year 2040, I think, although this isn't made clear. In this world, magical flares come and go, which makes impossible things a reality. Demons and gods walk the streets. Alliances are made and then broken. There are plenty of rules and a fair bit going on in a simple plot, yet I was confused too much of the time. As this is the third book in the series, author Ilona Andrews seems to have assumed that readers will have read the previous books. And I'm assuming that Kate's world is explained a little more clearly there. Why the magic comes and goes is never made clear. I didn't understand many of the terms and references, which kept me from fully enjoying the story.

What a delightful book - without argument, my favorite of the series so far.

Genuinely hilarious (especially that ending, which had me chuckling for a few minutes AFTER closing the pages and putting the book down).

Story begins on a stronger note than the second and was easier to dive instantly into. Pleased as punch to claim it never lagged, never dulled, keeping a good balance of action (to stay interesting), with enough introspection (to keep it real). Premise good as it took the traditional pack relations and turned them upside down.

The Midnight Games were brutal and disturbing. Kate having to work with others to keep Curran in the dark, then the fights scenes with them together, were exciting and interesting. The ending packed a powerful punch of emotion from the Beast Lord and left me wondering what would be happening next.

Kate isn't my favorite urban fantasy character, she's a little too bitchy sometimes, but I still enjoy her books. Curran and her scenes together were riveting as before, twisting me between giggles and cheers. Their relationship is finally blooming further, and it's a great, steamy, funny thing. Andrea and Raphael are growing on me more and more as a couple and individually. Really you get a good does of all the major players in this one, Saiman included. What he turned into surprised me and was a sight to read. Derek is as intriguing as ever, although his story turns darker, gut-wrenching turn.

Let's just say Ilona Andrews is a master husband and wife team when it comes to pinning sexual tension. Curran practically causes the pages to start sizzling. We get to see another side of loyalty to the pack and his friends here. Every scene with him had me mesmerized.

What a delightful book - without argument my favorite of the series so far. Genuinely hilarious (especially that ending), all the characters stayed true to form and riveting, plenty of action and intrigue. There was pressure from multiple sides. The only thing I wish about this one is that I could give it more than five stars.

Another awesome book in the Kate Daniels series. I'm 3 books into the series and the surprises and action have been non-stop. Illona definitely ranks up there with the rest of the big names in Urban fantasy, and she has hit my sweet spot with this series so far. I like enough profanity to make it seem real, and enough sexual tension to make things fun without embarrassing me with graphic love scenes. Oh...and LOTS of action and snarky wit. SCORE!!!

The ONLY problem I have with her books is that there aren't enough of them yet. ;-)

Just when I think this series can't get any better the husband and wife team behind the name Ilona Andrews manage to prove me wrong! Seriously, every single book in this series just gets better and better and leaves me more desperate to read the next instalment. Magic Strikes really ups the ante in the action stakes and I couldn't put it down for a second. I laughed, I cried, I swooned, I raged over things that happened, I sighed in relief, I laughed some more, I suffered with crazy sexual frustration and then the ending nearly killed me! Kate and Curran have turned me into a crazy fan girl - I want to be Kate's best friend and I want to jump Curran's bones (I have a feeling that if I picked option 2 Kate would brutally murder me but it would definitely be worth it!).

Kate is everything a heroine should be, she is smart, funny, loyal, kick ass and capable of standing on her own two feet to defend herself. She doesn't need anyone to protect her all the time but that doesn't mean she is too stupid to accept help when circumstances require it. She doesn't have many friends but anyone who earns that distinction from her will find she has their back no matter what it costs her. She isn't afraid to risk her life to keep those she cares about safe but she won't go down without a fight. Then you have Curran. What can I say about Curran? I really don't have the words to describe the Beast Lord but I'll try. He is an arrogant, domineering alpha who knows what he wants and won't stop until he gets it; he's a powerful leader who is respected by his pack and feared by his enemies; he is sexy as hell and he knows it; he wants to protect Kate but he loves her because of her strength; he respects the fact that she can and will stand up to him and he treats her like an equal. There aren't many heroes who make me swoon quite as much as Curran does and I absolutely love every single interaction between him and Kate. The ending of both Magic Strikes and Magic Burns absolutely killed me with how much they made me love him!

I haven't even got around to mentioning the other fantastic characters this series has to offer. In this instalment Derek is in trouble and when he is seriously injured Kate and other members of the pack will do anything to help him. They find themselves caught up in the Midnight Games, an underground fighting tournament where participants fight to the death, and Kate is forced to enter a team to fight for Derek's life. They are facing their fiercest enemy yet and the stakes have never been higher. Not only do we have the fantastic fight scenes and plenty of action surrounding the Midnight Games but we also get to find out more about Kate's background, we finally discover what Saiman is and we see just what happens when the shapeshifters go against Curran's laws. There are plenty of surprises that will keep you on your toes and I'm sure you're going to enjoy the banter between the characters as much as I did.

I don't think it's possible for me to write a serious review for this book so you're just going to have to ignore my rambling and trust me when I tell you this is a series you don't want to miss out on. If you haven't already started it then go away, read Magic Bites and then come back just to tell me how amazing it is. If you're already a fan then you can just jump straight to the crazy fan girl behaviour - I'll be jumping up and down right along with you!

Magic Strikes is the third book in the Kate Daniels series. Two words for you - LOVED. IT.

Derek, a shifter and friend to Kate, has been horribly injured and is unable to heal. Kate partners with a group of shifters to help Derek and stop a plot to harm all shapeshifters. And, oh yeah, Curran is there too.

Ilona Andrews does a wonderful job telling the story, continuing to build this alternate Atlanta and creating relationships between characters you can't help but care for.

Kate is strong and loyal. What's interesting is seeing her growth as a person. She was raised by her stepfather to be tough but she's had to learn to trust. But, now that she has friends - Andrea, Derek and even Curran - she won't let anything happen to them.

Curran is an alpha male, almost to the extreme. He is a strong leader and is used to getting his way. His continued pursuit of Kate (with her reluctance to give any ground) is fun to read. In the real world, we probably wouldn't be praising a man who breaks into a woman's home. Somehow, though, we still pull for Curran to win over Kate. It is so refreshing that we are three books in and she hasn't fallen into bed with him. She is making him work for it!

The supporting cast continues to make the story even better. Derek and Andrea as Kate's friends. Jim, a work partner, who isn't always the most straight forward good guy. We finally learn a little more about Saiman and what makes him tick. Raphael is a hoot - both in general (giving Curran a fan for Kate to use if she became hot and bothered by looking at him) and in trying to woo Andrea.

If you are a fan of Urban Fantasy, you have to read this series. It simply works! 5/5 stars.

Urban Fantasy junkies, this is it. The fabled book that is supposed to change your mind about this series. The book that drags the Kate Daniels series away from the average read it has been teetering towards and pulls it up out of the shadows.

For me it's been the inability to get past Kate's snark. Don't get me wrong I love--love, love, love,worship--her wit and sharp tongue. Those snarky comebacks are one of the main reasons I would have read this series into the realm of one star reads. Andrew's finally lets us into Kate's head. What she's running from, what she is, and her past. It was like I was meeting Kate for the first time. She's truly one of the most wonderful bad ass woman leads out there. She's hard and lethal, but she is a huge softy. She can kill the bad guys and right the wrongs without a worry of the price, but she can grieve over the "innocents" she doesn't even know.

Curran and Kate are really starting to heat. To the point where they might have enough sexual tension on the page to outdo early Anita Blake books and The Night Huntress series. You'll need a few cold showers by the time this book is done. Not only is the sexual tension good, but Curran's real feelings for Kate become clearer and clearer. She's not just someone he wants because she said no, he has an emotional interest.

Andrews has brought readers into the dark world of the Umpar--a cannibalistic rapist--to battles between two gods. Now we're introduced to the world of the Midnight Games. Basically teams of people volunteer to be gladiators and make a living that way. The spectators are just as bloody as the olden times and they love a good show--meaning the more death and blood the better. It's cold and cruel, hard believing that Kate grew up in such life. Too be quite honest the gladiator battles have to be some of the best action scenes written out there. Many times I found myself in a frenzied panic along with the characters.

Speaking of characters so much happens to them that it well makes up for the first two books. Kate gets a new friend, the were-hyena Andrea who is being wooed by a "sex god" from the local hyena clan. My favorite jaguar shifter is breaking the rules and almost defying Curran--and he gets a little silly. Then there's poor Derek. The stuff that happens to him is heart breaking. At more than one point I had to get up leave the book behind and go on some really long runs to relieve the stress.

This book is hot. The action is on fire, the plot is burning with emotions and plot turns, Kate and Curran are sizzling with chemistry, and Curran is just smoking hot! This is the book that probably has some of the funniest moments, sexiest, and best one liners. The more Kate becomes a "real" person the more I like her. It's a world that is well worth a visit. By the end of the book I was driven made by the cliffhanger between Kate and Curran. (As a hint I will say it has to do with a underwear served dinner.)

Sexual Content: Hot kisses, hot tub scene, and some nasty hints of rape from the villains.

4/5- Great! Really enjoyed it

Kate Daniels books are always eventful but Magic Strikes is in a league of its own when it comes to Urban Fantasy action. I felt like I was climbing that intensely steep roller coaster incline. You know the one: "oh crap, shiiiit, omg... AAHH". The first nine hours of this audio are scene after scene of off-the-wall action and the final 51 minutes come together spectacularly for that final drop a.k.a Chapter 28! I highly recommended this book *period*.

There's definitely a lot to take in this third time around. We learn more about Kate and Curran which I loved. Daniels' true purpose is finally revealed after two full books of frustratingly cryptic hints and speculation but I'm still not entirely sure what it all means. She and the Beast Lord make a ridiculous bet that can only end in disaster but admittedly, the fallout is wildly entertaining to witness. It also helped ensure that Kate and Curran were never far from each other which is guaranteed fun no matter how you look at it!

Curran proves that he's more than just a pretty face by demonstrating on several occasions that he is indeed just as cunning as he is powerful. His actions as alpha surprised me at times and made his character even more interesting. Yes he rules with an iron fist yet he's not unjust and not only does he follow Pack Law to the letter but, he can also quote it verbatim as he clearly demonstrates when he finally catches up with Kate, Jim, Raphael and Derek. Another highly memorable scene; this book has so many of them!

I'm not sure if this is a spoiler but I spent a large portion of this book wondering who the heck this Roland is. He's first introduced as "the most powerful man in the world" but I feel like I'm missing something. Then again, I often have that feeling when reading one of Andrews' books so it's hard to say for sure. Their world is so complex that I often find myself getting lost in it which is also one of the reasons why I keep coming back for more!

The fabulous Renée Raudman continues to excel as the narrator of this series. I don't think I'll ever be able to "read" another Kate Daniels book again! Time to move on to Magic Bleeds; I'm impatient for Curran to collect on their bet!

Kate Daniels is dragging. She's been working non-stop thru the magic shifts in Atlanta, riding her donkey from one scene to another to protect the city from the strange and obscene. Now she's got a half-naked banshee on an electric pole who won't come down or admit that she's a banshee because *gasp* what would the neighbors think? Never mind that she's (Mrs. McSweeney, not Kate) been screeching at the top of her lungs for the last WHO knows how long.... But this was her life - not just her job, and Kate did it because it was what she was meant to do. After convincing Mrs. McSweeney that Bingo simply couldn't be missed, Kate was looking forward to her bed and homemade pie when she got a summons to the scene of a dead shape-shifter. Being one of the only who could liaise (more than once) with the shape-shifters, she headed Marigold (the aforementioned donkey) towards the summons, riding through the tech and magic shifts comfortably on her steed, only to find that her services as an agent of the Order of Merciful Aid were unnecessary. Or were they?

After the strange scene with the weres, Kate went home, although she couldn't find her pie (when did she eat it?). Before she could crash, however, she got a call from her contact Saiman who asked her to come rescue her young friend Derek - another shape-shifter. This trip brings Kate into some interesting conditions with Saiman and promises with Derek that she regrets not asking more about - especially when she later finds Derek so close to death that his were virus may not even help his condition.

Saiman brings Kate to the Midnight Games - illegal, preternatural fight games where teams pit off against one another in fights to the death and there are many, many bets on the outcomes. Saiman, using one of his many alias and appearances is one of the owners of the Games, and he needs Kate's expertise on evaluating one of the teams. Kate is there, though, because of Derek. Derek has asked her to pass on a message to someone, and Kate wants to know why, because under shape-shifter law it is absolutely illegal to participate or acknowledge the Midnight Games in any way, shape, or form for the Atlanta shape-shifters, by order of Curran. If found out, Curran would have to kill Derek, and Kate needs to know what is worth it to Derek. But what Kate doesn't expect are the memories...

I love this series. Write faster. There have been many descriptions given to my sense of humor: wry, twisted, sarcastic, sardonic, demented, dry - but this book fits it perfectly. I absolutely love the relationship between Curran and Kate - I laugh out loud with the witty sarcasm and one-liners, and the sexual tension building between the couples drives me to my knees, knowing I'll have to wait for another book - maybe two...*must not think years*...arrgghhh, the frustration of a reader...

Magic Strikes is hands down my favourite book in the whole Kate Daniels series so far. ~ Under the Covers

Kate Daniels has been asked to assess the Reapers, a team of warriors in the Midnight Games, as although they may look human their forms may hide something much deadlier. However, it isn't just Kate who has been caught up in the Midnight Games and the Reapers, her friends in the Pack have also been pulled in, despite the Pack Law forbidding them to enter the Games, as the Reapers may hold a weapon key to wiping out all shifters.

Magic Strikes is hands down my favourite book in the whole Kate Daniels series so far. The combination of the continually growing tension between Kate and Curran; the awesome action packed idea of the Midnight Games and the shock of having Kate's past rear its head all combine to explode on the pages of Magic Strikes and I loved it.

It seems at this point in the series I am reading them just as much to see when Kate and Curran will FINALLY stop dancing around one another and get down to business, as much as I am reading to learn more about Kate and her past as well as her latest adventure. They come soooo close in this book, it had me screaming in excitement and banging my head in frustration... and I really enjoyed every second.

As for the action and adventure, like the previous books it is packed full of the usual sword waving, magic casting and sprinkling of dead bodies and myths come to life. The addition of the Midnight Games, a gladiator type contest, was brilliant, it enabled us to learn more about Kate's past and was a unique setting for the story.

As usual, I adored this book, it is full of humour, romance and action and I can't get enough of it!

These books always leaving me wanting more at the very end. I guess since Curran always has something to do with the ending could be the reason for it. But as soon as I read that last page I am like, Oh yes this next book they will finally get it on.. Sorry I have a one tracked mind where this lion is concerned. So with that thought in mind I am always in a dilemma read the next book asap or wait so I can enjoy this series longer. What's a girl to do with the hint of Curran may in face be naked in the next book??

Magic Strikes is another kick ass installment to the Kate Daniels series. Wherever Kate goes it seems trouble is always there. Now its not always her fault but she has a way of finding it. But then again you can kinda blame the shifters because they seem to always be there too. Anyways there are some new creatures in town that nobody can identify and there is also the illegal games. Kate goes "rogue" with some of the other shifters to take these men down before Curran finds out what other trouble they have gotten themselves into. They have 3 days or else Curran will be forced to teach his shifters a lesson and Kate will have to cook dinner for him naked.

Curran and Kate are again torturing me! I mean the hot tub scene was just mean. And even though I love Derek I wanted to hit him for ruining my moment!! But Curran seems to think Kate is his mate and he doesn't seem like the kinda guy to give up. These two are going to kill me with their sexual chemistry if they don't just do it already. So when I read the 4th book I am hoping for some wicked hot sex, damn it!!

Kate used to be a loner but now she has friends. In this book we see how much they mean to her and what she is willing to do to protect them. She is terrified of losing them like she has lost everyone else in her life. We also find out her big secret, which leads me to think there is going to be an even bigger show down coming up in the next books. We almost lost one of my beloved characters in this book and I couldn't handle it. Kate still kept her awesome sense of humor and kicked some major ass.

I think I am officially in love with this series. Another great Urban Fantasy I discovered this year. And I must give a special shout out to Jennifer from The Book Nympho for gifting me the books and challenging me to read them.

The writing is getting better and I found the storyline in this book more interesting than the first two books. I really like Curran despite him not really impressing me much in the first book. Now I can see that he's the only one who acts like a responsible adult, lol. Okay, that might be an exaggeration but in this book especially it seemed like he was having to step in, corral unruly children, and help clean up a mess that likely could've been avoided if anyone had had the sense to tell him what the problem was from the beginning.

Other than that the pacing was pretty good throughout, the world building continues to impress and the secondary characters are all interesting. Kate and Curran still haven't broken into my top echelon of favorite UF couples but that's mostly due to the fact that Kate seems to regress in maturity during her interactions with the Beast Lord. The feel seems to be:

Curran: You like me.
Kate: Nuh uh!
Curran: Admit it, you like me.
Kate: You have cooties.

It's getting better and Kate is getting better book by book though so I have high hopes. At least in this book she gave him more honest reasons as to why she's resisting him which was step up the maturity ladder. Also there's no love triangle, which I appreciate more than I can say. This book could've used more Curran though I guess that goes without saying.

Curran's first law as Beast Lord was, "Don't touch the Games." The Midnight Games is a gladiatorial-style tournament where teams of supernaturals are pitted against each other. When Kate's friend Derek is found near death, all signs point to a team in the tournament called the Reapers. Determined to find those responsible, Kate and a small team of rogue shapeshifters infiltrate the tournament. But the tournament hold potential exposure for Kate, and those who work for her father are closer than she ever thought.

Kate's stepfather told her that having friends would be the death of her, and that may be so considering the number of times she's been near death because she was helping someone out. But I think Kate has also gained strength from having people she wishes to protect. The fact that Kate risks potential exposure at the tournament shows a change in her priorities and she's finally starting to live for herself. This sacrifice is significant in that she is starting to open herself to new friendships and relationships. And her loyalty to those she chooses as her friends is undeniable. But she still fears these relationships because she fears these people being caught up in her ever-approaching battle with her father. She has lost so many people in her life already because of who she is and she doesn't want to lose anymore. Derek's attack at the hands of the Reapers brings those fears into reality.

Curran's advances toward Kate reach the stalker-level in Magic Strikes. After the reeve attack in Magic Burns, Curran replaced her apartment door and kept a copy of the key for himself. He goes to her place once in a while, watches her sleep (and let's face it, he's probably the one who ate her apple pie), just to know that she's safe. And after Kate was attacked by some of the members of the Pack, Curran put out an order stating that anyone who attacks her will be punished. Then there is the Universe-explosive kiss that just leaves Kate wanting more. It's no wonder Curran thinks that they're mated. Though Kate will deny it, Curran notices her fear that there may actually be something more between them. I have to say that I would love to be stalked by Curran (who wouldn't?), and the verbal sparring between Curran and Kate is just too funny. The only thing holding Kate back is her fear that Curran will be killed because of who she is. With Curran's persistence though, Kate won't be able to hold out forever.

Kate's father, who we know to be the infamous Roland, hires the Reapers to take out the Pack. Curran's Pack is the second largest in North America and it's growing everyday, so Roland sees them as a threat to his growing empire. He has also sent Hugh d'Ambray, his Warlord, to oversee the job and make sure that the Reapers do as they were hired to. He goes so far as to lend them one of his personal weapons, forged of his own blood, the Scarlet Star. This is the risk to Kate. She is the only one who has the power to destroy Roland's sword, but doing so will expose who she really is. The fact that Kate risked her own life to protect them is not lost on her shapeshifting friends. This is Kate first big show of loyalty to the Pack. This is a very powerful and important moment in the Kate Daniels series so far. It's also a big moment for Kate, because she learns that she also has the same ability as her father to shape her blood.

Magic Strikes shifts from the usual Euro-Greco-Roman mythology of the first two books to Hindu mythology. There is mention of Hindu gods, creatures, and artifacts. And all of this informations is given to us by Dali, an Indonesian, vegetarian, were-tigress. I usually prefer Euro-Greco-Roman mythology to others, but the Hindu mythology used in Magic Strikes was a refreshing change since I don't know much about it.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: Kick-butt Kate enters an underground tournament to stop a group of rakshasas from taking out the shapeshifters.

Opening Sentence: Some days my job was harder than others.

The Review:

Kate Daniels, smart-a$$ mercenary and unofficial grunt of the Order, is back and ready to kill things using her deadly sword and sarcasm. This time, she finds herself in the middle of an underground tournament fighting for her life and those of her furry friends. Her father always said that having friends would be the death of her; here is to hoping that isn't the case after all.

The Midnight Games is a place for those to fight and die for money, prizes, and fame drenched in blood. When it looks like a team competing is more than what they seem, Kate is drafted to help find out who they really are. After they attack and decimate some of the local shapeshifters, including Derek, she is willing to do whatever it takes to make them pay. Roping in some unlikely help, Kate and some of the other shapeshifters defy Pack law and enter the tournament so the prize, the fabled Wolf Diamond, doesn't fall in the wrong hands. This particular diamond is said to also be more than it seems; enough believe in its supernatural powers that they are willing to do whatever it takes to obtain it, even kill. How far is Kate willing to go to keep her friends safe?

This is the book that got me hooked on the series. Kate's new openness to having friends, her more humane side, makes for a much more remarkable character than a simple killing machine. Her loyalty isn't given lightly and neither is her friendship. She literally puts herself on the line in order to keep the people she cares about safe; a far cry from a girl raised with a single bloody purpose in life to take down the powerful man that sired her. Also, it seems that her friends have the same (if not more) note of sarcasm and humor that Kate has; it makes for the most entertaining conversations!

Kate's potential exposure makes her sacrifice that much more significant. She has always flown under the radar, trying to grow stronger so that she can take out Roland, her father, once and for all. By competing in a public setting in front of potential watchers, Kate is making herself known in the worst way possible. It is a big step and an important one. It signifies a change in priorities; from her father's to her own. Kate is now living more for herself than what she was trained to do from birth by Voron, Roland's ex-Warlord.

Hindu mythology mixed in with the intense fight scenes give the book that much more flavor. It is action packed while attending to character development and progression. Not only does the reader get a fast-paced cut-and-slash, they also get the depth that makes this a series a must-read for any Urban Fantasy fan.

FTC Advisory: Penguin/Ace graciously provided me with a copy of Magic Strikes. No goody bags, sponsorships, "material connections," or bribes were exchanged for my review. The only payments I receive are hugs and kisses from my little boys.

Wow, this story went from entertaining to amazing in one book! Let me count the ways:

1. We FINALLY get some answers on who and what Kate is!! YES! I love this rocking, kick-a$$ heroine. She's not whiny, she's not too cocky, and she has a sword named Slayer. This girl has some serious fighting skills and isn't afraid to put herself in harms way for the ones she holds dear.

2. CURRAN!! Oh my heart HIS MAJESTY THE BEAST LORD! I'll cook for you anytime. Talk about knight-in-shining armor: "You're MINE!" -Curran to Kate. The hot-tub scene was reason enough to read this! *wipes steam from glasses*

3. Action filled plot: The games, crazy Siman (not sure of the spelling, listening to audiobook), the wicked Rackshazah's. I loved the teams working together to annihilate the enemy.

4. Wonderful secondary stories. Andrea and Rafael. How sweet are they?!! I love the wooing tactics of the shape-shifters. That includes Curran's. Derrick's (Kate's heart-throb werewolf sidekick) situation broke my heart. There might be something in the future with Derek and Julie. I know, she's young....for now.

5. That bet! Looking forward the pay up in the next book.

The audio version has vastly improved from the last two books. Renee Raudman is doing a much better job with the male voices. They now sound very low and sensual! 180 degree positive turn around. Loving the audio now.

I'm officially addicted! I've already downloaded Magic Bleeds.

This series just keeps getting better and better to me. More magic, more action, and more of that delightful push-me/pull-you chemistry between Kate and Curran. I don’t know if their chemistry is supposed to be the funniest parts of the book, but their interactions left me doubled over with laughter many times while reading. I can’t wait to see what trouble Kate and her merry crew of mischief-makers get in to next.

At first, I found myself thinking this book is my favorite Kate Daniels book so far, but my enthusiasm tapered to normal by the end--not necessarily a bad thing. I was surprised with the development of Saiman's character. The scene where he reveals himself and enters the fight could have gone horribly wrong, because Saiman could have become too powerful to exist in the story, but the author(s) handle him deftly.

Kate's back story grows larger and more ominous, though Kate may be in danger of "leveling up" if she is going to handle Roland, but so far she has not grown too powerful. My main fear at this point is that Roland will be a huge disappointment when he finally appears, but I plan to keep reading/ listening to this series. I have many favorite characters now and the Ilona Andrews team delivers consistently entertaining stories.

The courtship rituals of the pack are interesting. There were a few more scenes with Kate drooling over Curran than I needed. And Kate is always "remembering to breathe." By the end of the book, I was not as intrigued by the bad guys as I was at the beginning, but still wanted Kate and her friends to hammer them. Having said that, and even though I was not looking for romance, I enjoyed this story from start to finish.

My favorite scene, though it is not a major scene, is when Kate goes to pick up Julie at boarding school.

Magic Strikes is another good Kate Daniels book.

Review posted here:[...]

I finished this just yesterday. I couldn't put it down even if I wanted to. Ilona Andrews, you have done it again. This series gets better and better. The adventures that Daniels and Curran go through every book are so incredible and imaginative, I am still scratching my head as to why this has not been made into a movie yet.

This book starts off with Kate trying to get Derek out of a little bind. We soon find out this little issue is apart of a huge battle that can cut the city of Atlanta down to size. Our beloved Derek was trying his best to help a greedy and desperate girl escape the horrible life she chose. The girl, Livie, chose to be apart of a magical bunch of people because she wanted to be special. Unfortunately, it was more than she bargained for. She ended up working for a bunch of crazy, sadistic, stupid, and cannibalistic bunch who need to win an illegal tournament. The prize is something that puts all the of the Pack in jeopardy.

Kate thinks Derek is a lovesick puppy at first, so she is not able to help Derek when he needs it. Derek fans, I do urge you to put sharp objects away immediately. Trust me, you will be as pissed as Kate was after things go down. I'm still pissed.

I love how Andrews doesn't focus mainly on Kate, that we have a sense of all characters in the book. I love them all. I would love to see more of Raphael, he does crack me up. The story he told Kate about how his dad tried to impress his mom made me laugh so hard, there were tears coming out of my eyes.

So again, the characters, the unimaginable action, the comedy, are perfect. We get to have more of Kate and Curran. Kate seems to hate him a little less this book around. We do get a hot scene, but they didn't touch the fire (thanks Derek). Seriously, if you have not read/started this series, what are you waiting for? Get it now. Why are you still reading? I said now.

A fantastic story, the books in this series just get better and better. In this one Kate Daniels is entangled in the Midnight Games, a deadly fighting tournament featuring preternatural beings, after she learns that her werewolf friend Derek has been severely injured and is near death. As she investigates the situation, she determines that she and a hastily assembled team must compete in the games in order to foil a plot against her shapeshifter friends; even though her involvement may expose the background she’s been at great pains to keep hidden. Of course Curran, the Beast Lord, who has a rule forbidding any of his people to compete, can’t be fooled long, and he joins in the fight. Although there is plenty of great action and drama to satisfy any fan, I thought the taste of romance was encouraging for the future of our reclusive Kate, and I look forward to the next story to see where it leads.

Magic Strikes, Book 3 in the Kate Daniels series starts out feeling like the daily grind, but things soon pick up. There's a shifter murder that Jim's trying to keep under wraps from The Beast Lord. Then there's Derek. Through him Kate stumbles upon an illegal underground preternatural gladiator fighting ring, the Midnight Games; there is no doubt a connection. Derek's trying to help a friend, but these games are forbidden in the shifter community. Of course, Kate steps up to try to help. I'm sure you can imagine that things don't quite go as planned or else we'd have no book. Through these games we meet some new formidable adversaries with an HQ that reminds of Howl's Moving Castle gone Baller.

I won't spoil it but something gut-wrenching happens to a character that I grew attached to over the books. Everything was going along swimmingly and then at about a third in, you get hit like a mac truck. I read the part on the train going into work and it seriously put a damper on my morning. I guess that's a sign of good story-telling.

This series has a consistent level of high quality. It's really hard for me to say if one book is better than the other. There's always an interesting case for Kate, the characters are consistently dynamic, and while some plot points are status quo, Andrews isn't afraid to take risks with her characters, so it doesn't make you feel too comfortable either.

It's really hard to truly categorize this urban fantasy. Some series are obviously dark, some are obviously more light. It's got pretty much all of the elements you can find, along with countless one-liners. My kindle's got so many bookmarks for this series I would practically read the books all the way through again if I clicked on them one by one, haha.

As a whole I feel this series is really heavy on shifters and their customs, maybe even more than magic itself at times. The shifter content is what stands out to me most anyway. Lycan mythology usually isn't my thing, so that may be why I'm not *quite* as attached. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate good storytelling. It's a thoroughly entertaining ride and you'll be hard pressed to find many series of such high caliber.

Where was I? Categorize, categorize...I'll just throw it in the category of AWESOME and call it a day.

SYNOPSIS:
Every gut reaction Kate has tells her to read the note Derek, her young werewolf buddy, wants her to pass to the girl at the Midnight Games, but a promise is a promise and Kate doesn't read the note. Well, that turned out to be a big mistake. Because Kate kept her word, Derek is slowly dying and she finds herself having flashbacks of memories of previous times she has found herself on the sand floor of a gladiator arena. The kind of place where only one person can walk away because the other is dead.

OPINION:
Once again Ilona Andrews has written a story in the Kate Daniels series which surpasses the previous books. I didn't think these stories could get much better but this one proves I was wrong. "Magic Strikes" moves the relationship between Curran, Beast Lord of Atlanta, and Kate Daniels, mercenary, forward by huge leaps. This story also reveals what Saiman is really like under all that shape changing he loves to do. (Saiman is fond of saying that he isn't a [...], he is a sexual deviant. And he thinks that's a compliment!) Derek, Jim, Andrea, Raphael, Dr. Doolittle and Julie are all back and very involved in this exciting, action filled segment in the "magic" series. We also meet Dali, a new character who was very sweet and engaging. The fact that her beast form is a tiger, but her food preference is vegetarian is just one indicator of the wonderful touches of humor which abound throughout this entire series. Yes, there is a large amount of violence in this book, in this entire series, but the touches of wry humor, laugh out loud funny quips, and emotional connections between characters keep the books from becoming oppressive. And the bad guys are all examples of this authors fertile imagination and make you use your own imagination to call them up in your minds eye so you can see how they are killed. Very, very innovative writing on the part of Ms Andrews.

Another point I would like to make is that Ms Andrews is one of the best authors I've read with her ability to incorporate all aspects of the previous books in this series into book three without making you feel as if it is all redundant. All of the back story is covered so well that this book could be easily read as a stand alone book. Of course, if you chose to go that route just make sure you have the first two books handy because you will immediately want to dig into them.

RECOMMENDATION:
I'm beginning to think that I would recommend reading a grocery list if it was written by Ilona Andrews. This is my third Kate Daniels book. I cannot recommend this series highly enough to anyone interested in the urban fantasy/paranormal/action genres. I see there is a blurb in the back of "Magic Strikes" regarding a new series, (On the Edge (The Edge, Book 1)) beginning next month from Ms Andrews. Believe me, that one has been on pre order for me from the store for a long time. While you're waiting for it, read this one.

I've liked the Kate Daniels series from the very first book. But with Magic Strikes, that like has turned in to full-blown love.

Two months have passed since the massive magic flare and epic battle that ended the last book. But there are new problems on the horizon. They start when Derek gets caught trying to break in to Saiman's apartment. To keep the young wolf out of trouble, Kate agrees to accompany Saiman to a Gladiator-style game, to help him learn more about a mysterious team of participants called the Reapers. But it seems Derek has a particular interest in one of the team-members and convinces Kate to pass the woman a note while she is there.

Kate senses it's a bad idea. But things go more wrong than she ever imagined they could. For vengeance, for justice, Kate and a band of her closest friends end up competing themselves. Their goal, to take down the Reapers and win the grand prize.

There's a lot of emotion in this book. Most of it centers around the fact that Kate has real friends for the first time in her life. Their fragility terrifies her. She is also hyper-aware that her love for them can be crippling. To lose one of them, could damage her in a way that couldn't be done when she lived her life as a loner. We see how much Derek, Andrea, Julie... and even Curran have ensconced themselves into her heart. --And speaking of Curran, the sparks between these two grow hotter with every book. There is phenomenal sexual tension and it's played to perfection.

We also finally find out the big secret Kate has been carrying. It's been foreshadowed, but hearing her admit her heritage is still a pretty big deal. And you can tell it's only a matter of time before it all blows up in her face.

This book was outstanding. It had big emotion, lots of action, and the fantastic & witty dialogue that's a hallmark of the series. 5 stars.

This series has been such a great find to read. Each one keeps getting better and better. Seriously, it has been a hard choice on which one is my favorite so far, but I think this one surpassed the first two and became my new favorite of the series.

Derek was always one of my favorite secondary characters and when he is attached in this book, I literally wanted to rip someone to pieces. The horrific things the enemy does to Derek was just heart wrenching and I nearly collapsed just like Kate when she went to see him after the attack. I wanted justice and I wanted it to be just as painful as what Derek had went through. The way Jim explained his reasoning on disobeying the Beast Lord made me see Jim in a new light as well. It showed his compassion and loyalty to his friends that I hadn't really seen in the previous books.

This brings me to the dynamics that are evolving around Kate and Curran. *swoon* Can this Beast Lord get any sexier? I fell harder for this character this time around and I am sure other readers will agree that this book was the one that opened our eyes to the sexiness that is called Curran. His compassion surfaced and showed that he does have a softer side and understands the reasoning in the way members of his Pack did what they did. Instead of destroying them for what they had done, he surprised me and decided to fight right beside them. He showed his loyalty back to the Pack and stood ground with them in a bloody battle that could have killed them all.

The sexual tension is stepped up a notch in this book as well. The bet had to be the most stupid thing out of Kate's mouth if she truly didn't have chemistry with Curran, but I think it was one decision her subconscious really wants to happen. That is one bet that I wouldn't mind losing if I was betting with Curran myself! *sigh*

The scenes near the end almost were my undoing. I was swooning with the words and actions from Curran. I wanted a furry Beast Lord of my own. I seriously cannot wait to start the next book and see what happens next. This series has become a serious addiction to me and I can't break the hold it has on me.

I read the first book in this series, Magic Bites, because my sister-in-law made me. And by "made," I mean she held me down kicking and screaming as she flipped the pages. I swear it happened just like that! ...Okay, maybe the "making" part was a bit less literal and a bit more figurative. But still, there was definite internal kicking and screaming going on. In the end, I gave Magic Bites two stars, and I thought that was pretty generous.

Magic Burns was a clear improvement. I gave it four stars, but it really deserved more like three and half.

Magic Strikes, on the other hand, was pretty freakin' great. There was some weird farfetched-ness toward the end of the book with the whole blood-manipulation thing. (I am being purposely vague to avoid spoilers.) But other than that, I was quite pleased with the book.

I got to see more of Jim and Derek in this book. And Curran became downright playful--like a big, scary playful kitty. I just adore him. My primary complaint with respect to the first book in the series is that so many characters were introduced without being fleshed out. There was no focus. Even Kate, the main character, was shrouded in mystery in Magic Bites. In Magic Strikes, on the other hand, more cards were laid on the table. More personalities and origins were revealed, and the characters became real. As much as I hate to admit it, I am really excited about reading the rest of this series.

Magic Strikes is the third book in the Kate Daniels series. And let me just say it was awesome! It begins when there is a shape shifter death that her old sometimes partner hides from Curran. Now Kate is in the middle of it when Derrick gets hurt. She's out for blood for those who hurt her friend. But little does she know she might be exposing herself just help safe the rest of them. Especially when someone actually finds out who she is... Now all we have to do is sit back and watch Kate take care of her friends.

I loved this book! I loved all of the drama, action, and romance. But most of all I loved all of the characters even when they acted stupid. I'm glad Kate finally has someone to talk to about the secret she's been keeping. But I'm kind of wandering what Curran's plans are for Kate, and why it is taking him so long to make it known exactly what he's doing. Jeez the beast lord is frustrating at times. But I really enjoy him and Kate when they are together, it is always very amusing. Now i'm super excited to read the next book, can not wait!

Kate gets a call from the shapechanger Saiman that he's got Kate's werewolf sidekick Derek after he tried to break into his home. In exchange to Derek's freedom Kate agrees to go to Midnight Games, highly illegal tournament to death, as Saiman's date. Derek won't tell why he tried to steal Saiman's tickets but makes her promise to deliver a message to a girl in the Games without reading it first. Kate does as she promised but it comes with a price as she comes too late to Derek's rescue and finds him nearly beaten to death, unable to shapeshift nor heal himself.

At first I have to say that this was the book that made me love this serie for sure! I've liked the previous books but this is by far the best so far.

There's lot of action and ass kicking and I loved it. Kate seems to have matured a bit and started to care for others more. I loved how she went to Julie's rescue to the school. Relationship between Kate and Curran takes to another level and the bath scene *drools* I like that the relationship is building in stages and she's not just jumping into his bed at first chance.

I laughed aloud many times and the book is great mix of humour and action.

I found myself to become more curious of Jim too. It's not easy when there's too many hot men there! And poor, poor Derek!

I admit that everyone was right, these books just gets better.

Ilona Andrews has proven that they have gotten a sure thing with the Kate Daniels "Magic" series after the release of the 2nd book "Magic Bites". In Magic Strikes, we are reintroduced to Kate's world as her life is now much more comfortable financially due to her affiliation with the Order, her status with the Pack and the Beast Lord Curran seem to be on reasonably good terms as well.

With such smooth sailing Kate figures its only time before her past starts intruding on her present. She gets a call from Saiman who tells her that he has something important to her in his custody and it will be crucial that she recover it before he has to take precautionary measures. When she meets Saiman she realizes that he has Derek in his possession who was trying to get passes to the "Midnight Games" a series of supernatural gladiatorial games.

Once she absolves Derek of his intrusive mistake with Saiman, she has to partake to Saiman's request and also Derek's which puts her in a very awkward position. However she does manage to fulfill both and that leads to a pivotal encounter which leaves Derek savaged & thereby begins the dark journey for Kate into the Midnight games. This book utilizes many of the side characters who have had smaller roles so far such as Jim, Andrea, Dolittle, Ralph, etc & going with the trend of past books utilizes a mythology from a different country.

The villains so as to speak in this book are truly frightening and may be connected with Kate's past. The climactic battle and its ruminations trigger off many new things for Kate in her personal & professional life. Primarily being her relationship with the beast lord as Curran since his ascent to the title of Beast Lord, has forbade any pack member from ever participating in the games.

Thus with such an explosive set up Ilona Andrews begin the third magic book, the pace in this book is tremendous as the story zooms along and the reader is pulled into the plot. The mythological aspect used in this tale is a very clever one and hats off to the writers for utilizing this one. The writing and characterization is spot on in this book & the reader can see how the authors are getting comfortable with this set up & it just goes to show in their writing which is improving tremendously.

The interaction and banter with Kate and Curran is an ever present highlight however in this book the rest of the cast is also used prominently and we get a very action packed and character heavy book. Much of Kate's past is revealed in this book and it spurs on to a nice resolution and has a tantalizing hook set up for the 4th book. "Magic Bleeds".

What differentiates this series for me amidst the many urban fantasies is that the authors have taken care to substantiate their world in small but significant ways. Yes there are vampires and werewolves however the vampires aren't the Twilight kind, they are more akin to the actual legends and to add a twist in these stories are frequently controlled by necromancers[The People] who telepathically guide/control them. As for the werewolves they are a small set of Shapeshifters who form a massive Pack and who have seven animal clans [namely Wolf, Nimble, Rat, Hyena, Heavy, Cat & Jackal] to get a further idea about the pack and its internal workings, check out the official author page.

With these minor but crucial differences and along with the Crumbling world setting, this series has become one of my favorites and to add to that the main protagonist Kate Daniels is shown to be smart, snarky & a whole lot of fun to read about. Since I discovered these books a few months ago, I had the pleasure of reading the first 4 titles back to back and now the wait begins for Magic Slays!

Book Rating - 4& 1/2 stars!

This is the third book in the Kate Daniels series and what a wonderful book it was. Very creative, very fast-paced, all the wonderful fight scenes, and hilarious attitude that Kate is known for. I actually listened to this on audio book and the audio book is wonderful. If you have a change to listen to the audio book it's worth it; the lady who reads it does Kate's voice and personality absolutely perfectly.

Something strange is going on. Shapeshifters are being killed and Kate is brought in to find out why. Then Simone catches Derek trying to steal tickets to some forbidden and illegal event called the Midnight Games. Kate has to cut a deal with Simone to get Derek out of there, as such she ends up at the Midnight games, as Simone's date, and watches a team called the Reapers. The Reapers are supposedly human, but end up being much more. Kate needs to figure out if the Midnight Games and the murders are linked.

This was a great book and super hard to put down. Kate has a wonderful dry sense of humor, as does Curran. All the characters in this book are well done, amusing, and likable. The fight scenes are plentiful and extremely well done. The plot is complicated and takes many unexpected twists and turns. Many very creative things happen; you meet some new races and get to venture deep into Unicorn Alley.

The best part is that you learn a lot more about Kate's history with Roland. It seems that the story is winding closer and closer to a confrontation between Kate and Roland. You learn a lot more about Simone's past too. Oh and did I mention the wonderful fight scenes, and the awesome magical weapons?

Overall another wonderful book in this series. I don't have any complaints; except that I want to read the next on sooo bad. For those of you dying for more Kate; Andrews did write a short story involving Kate, Andrea, and Raphael in the "Must Love Hellhounds" anthology called "Magic Mourns". It's a pretty good read. What a great series; I hope Andrews can keep this up for many more books to come!

This series just keeps getting better. Seriously, what a little gem. It really works for me on so many levels.

The action has been consistently pretty top notch as well as each plot. I really love learning more about the shape shifter politics & infrastructure.

The growing chemistry between Curran & Katie is authentic & on pace & these two authors really know how to build a nice, slow burn tension between them.

All of the extraneous characters who help flesh out the world & story are interesting in their own right & have their own voice. I am amazed at how well the Andrews team are developing these other persona's considering it's quite a cast heavy series, as well as fairly heavy on the action & plot. However, these two have managed to find the perfect balance IMO.

What I also really appreciate is that it would be so easy for Kate or even Curran to cross the line personality-wise & head into Mary Sue/Gary Stu territory. It could easily fall into the trap I see so many other series fall into where they try to make their leads TOO strong by being TOO sassy therefore TOO irresistible which ultimately paints them into a generic & Mary Sue/Gary Stu too perfect corner. There could be too much sass & snark which leads to annoying but what I think these authors do so well is give the characters genuine humor with a nice does of humility thrown in. Whether it be through embarrassing moments or wryly delivered dialog. It keeps the characters real & allows us to embrace them warts & all.

This series is definitely on my fave's list & I don't have very many when I think about how many series I have read. I genuinely hope it stays there. It's pretty tight.

Kate gets into another mess, not so long after the last mess (Magic Burns) and this time the stakes might mean a one way ticket to a hellish death. A lot is uncovered in this third installment of the urban fantasy series--not just in the course of the brutal investigation Kate practically jumps into, but also towards the overall secret of Kate herself. Namely who she is, how she came to be and what exactly is she training for.

I guessed in the second book what her secret was, but it was nice to have this confirmed and perhaps someone should have passed on the Evil Overlord List to Roland so these things wouldn't have happened. I found Kate's past to be fascinating and was relieved to see she didn't angst on it. She didn't have a safe, happy childhood in the 'burbs, it was intense, risky and bordering on child endangerment in some cases, but she took those lessons and learned.

More then her father wanted apparently.

I found interesting also just how adaptable she has to be in order to remain sane. Not just what happened in her past, but also her present isn't a peachy show either. Stress with Jim erupts, her need to protect those she loves is tested and she was unwanted emotion's pincushion for much of the book. Curran, of course, continues to 'court' her (were-lion style), which irritates her more often then anything else. She should however be grateful that its Curran and not Raphael (a bouda) courting her since a bouda's courting ritual involves a practical joke to be played upon the intented. A 'this can't be topped by another male' practical joke to prove his worth to the female no less.

I did become exasperated with her in regards to her feelings over Curran. I understand them, they are perfectly reasonable from her standpoint and Curran's history, but I found them exasperating none the less. Practically the entire Pack is telling her, subtly and not-so-subtly, that his intentions are VERY CLEAR, but she insists that they are misreading things. If I was Curran I'd take her over my knee and smack her behind until she gave in (who knows she might even like that).

Oh! And lest we forget Saiman...who we last saw dancing naked in the snow. We learn lots about him. Sure he still manages to scream Pervert just by saying 'Hi!', but at least he comes by it naturally.

All in all I am mighty happy with this third installment and if the snippets on Ilona Andrews blog is any indication Book 4 promises to be just as much fun.

I love this world created by Ilona Andrews...even though I sure wouldn't want to live in it. Magic waves fight periods of high technology. Vampires Masters (not the vampires themeselves) rule over their followers. Kate Daniels has some magic of her own. We get to find out where that magic came from in "Magic Strikes", but readers of the first two books will no doubt only get thier suspecions confirmed. Kate works for the Order of Knights of Mericful Aid and ever since she got that job it seems she has been picking up some friends...something she rarely ever trusted herself with before. Now she has some, she is zestfully loyal. When one of her friends, her werewolf friend Dereck gets into some real trouble, Kate is their to find out how to heal him and where to do go to extract some revenge. Unfortunately this plan sees her going against the packmaster Curran and his orders over all of beastkind. My four star (instead of 5 star) review is solely because I didn't care for the gladiator setting and I would have liked seeing the actual revenge scenes play a larger part of the last third of the book. Now I can pack on the praises. Kate is probably the most likeable of the paranormal heroines in novels today (and I still like an awful lot of them). She treats people well unless of course, you are up to some bad things. Then she has no qualms about beheading you. The 'romance' between Kate and Curran is also probably my favorite out there and it has to be because they don't get along on the surface, but underneath these two are nuts about each other. Curran sees it more than Kate will allow herself to. Each book gets us a little closer to their love for each other breaking through but I enjoy their banter a lot so I hope Andrews keeps us waiting awhile longer. The last scene in this book, especially the last page was top-notch. It is a true shame that we must wait so long for another Kate Daniels story as they truly stand out as sensation in an overfilled genre.

The husband and wife team who are Iona Andrews deliver another home run with their third Kate Daniel's saga - magical urban fantasy with a touch of romance. This series has become one of my favorites and I really enjoyed how Magic Strikes keeps the series story arc unfolding as we finally discover secrets about Kate's past and about the wierd and powerful Samhain. I love Kate, she's powerful (and now we know why) and she has a great 'first person' voice - there's nothing that breaks a UF like having a lead who isn't likable. Magic Strikes also had some really great action sequences for Kate and crew as they face down a truly challenging enemy and are drawn into the world of gladiator style death games.

The Andrews also continue to develop relationships between lead Kate and a rich supporting cast - with some verbal sparring and nice steamy tension building between Kate and beast lord Curran and some real connections for Kate who has only rarely allowed herself attachments. There are also some poignant moments as Kate fears she will lose one of those she has come to care about. And I love way Kate handles her sometime partner Jim, when he tries to freeze her out and hide the circumstances behind Derrick's attack - go Kate!

My only nit about this series is not really a complaint about the books at all, it's just that the Andrews can't possibly write these fast enough to keep me sated. So I just have to content myself with their other offerings waiting on the horizon - a short in the Must Love Hellhoundsanthology and the first book in their new 'Edge' series, On the Edge (The Edge, Book 1), both are coming in September - and will have to tide me over until our next 'Magic(al)' journey to Kate Daniel's alternate Atlanta.

Well, I'm noticing a definite climb in my enjoyment of this series. I don't know if the world building is smoother or if I have just stopped questioning it. I do still wonder where all the straight humans are. Come on, Crest can't be the only one out there. In regards to stars, I'd say this one is more of a 4.5 where the first two were more of a 4 and 4.25 respectively.

I think I liked this one more because there was more action. Because I feel disconnected from the characters, too much time spent slowly investigating tends to bore me. With this one we have a lot fight scenes and a lot more time spent around her core group of friends.

Poor Derek. Kid's had a hard life, and this book doesn't make it any easier. I like the bond that you sense between him and Kate. That moment they had when Kate couldn't cry - very affecting. I don't know why I connect at moments like that but can't seem to connect to the book as a whole. I'm just odd I guess.

I liked learning more about Saiman. I find him very interesting so I liked learning more about who/what he is. I liked that the events that take place didn't change his character. He isn't the fighter that Kate is no matter what blood he has. He fears and worries and doesn't like what he has to do. I appreciated the contrast to every other life form running around that world.

I liked how much more insight we got into Kate and her past. It was a great scene when Kate was telling Jim about what her dad wanted her to grow up to be. Harsh childhood, but it's hard to blame her dad because she grew up like that for a reason. Meeting Hugh... man, I can sense some bad things on the horizon. Even though you know bad stuff is going to happen, you have to respect Kate for consciously making a choice to stay and stand up for her friends.

The fight scenes were pretty engrossing. I couldn't help but laugh after their first bout. Poor Jim was so mad that he snapped his clipboard. The part that really cracked me up though was Kate and Curran's defensive comments about their technique. I really liked the last fight. Especially because it brought about an unexpected conversation with Andrea. The ending got a little hectic, but that's not a bad thing. I'm intensely curious about the ability Kate discovered she had. What's that going to lead to?

I think Andrea and Raphael are adorable. His conversations with Kate about the different clan's mating habits was both funny and illuminating. Curran got more interesting, but he's still kind of smothering to me. I liked the playful side he showed with Kate. I do have to point out one more fabulous character. Dali. She is awesome. I cracked up when poor Jim had to admit to her deficiencies. I loved her hidden talent. Who would have thought up a talent like that? How do you even discover you have that?

Overall, good book and the series is looking up.

My thoughts:

You all knew this day would come, I am officially converted and can say that this series kicks some serious ass.

I kept reading, giggling and laughing, this book is certainly the best so far and if this continues I my heart will be lost. Kate is a great character, strong, and she does not back down. I got the meet the pervy Saiman again, and he does amuse me. Then there is Curran, ok ok I admit he makes me drool, but my heart is not entirely lost, he is just too alpha for me. But for Kate he is perfect. Those two, the chemistry, and him trying to woo her his way. Makes it really hard for a girl to put this book down.

Then there is the action that keeps coming, the best part of UF. And this freaky world, loving it. This time bad guys are, I am not going to say, but I like where she took it, oh and what Saiman really is, very nice.

But honestly what keeps making me coming back is her origin. First who is her father, then what is he, then what is she, and when she will meet him. That conflict is what I like about this series.

Final thoughts and recommendation.

The best book so far, and at the end it made me ache to get book 4 and see where it all is heading. I am giving it a 3,75, it has been a step up all the way and I do think the next one will be even better. It was good, and I need the next book.

And yes I do recommend this series to UF and PNR lovers, and to the rest too.

This is an interesting series. I truly enjoyed the first book and felt so so about the second even thought I gave it a four star rating (should have been a bit over three stars) but I liked this one immensely (four and half stars). Why do some series wax and wane?

Kate Daniels, employed by the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, finds herself watching the illicit Midnight Games where teams compete to live. The crowds love it but Kate feels sick. How can anyone enjoy watching others die? Most important why did she allow Saiman to talk her into attending?

When her once-protector, Derek, is severely injured and almost dies Kate vows to avenge him against the Reapers, a team that participates in the games and almost destroy Derek. Putting together a team of her own, she enters the games with the order's quiet approval. What happens next is bloody, deadly, terrifying and terribly frightening. It's a good read and mighty exciting. The authors did a fine job putting together a thrilling and a bit of a romantic read. If you like fantasy and don't mind violence and blood this one might be right for you.

Magic Strikes is the third in the Kate Daniels series, books about a pseudo-post apocalypse Atlanta which has been ravaged and mutated by the war, literally, between science and magic. As magic gains in power, buildings, machines and the trappings of science are falling apart. Likewise, creatures of magic, such as shape shifters, fae and vampires, are taking control, edging out mere humans with every magic wave.

Kate is an operative of the Knights of Merciful Aid, and a member of the Guild of Mercenaries. She's also earned the friendship of The Pack, which means when something magical pops up and needs killing, twarting or rescuing she's front and center.

This time Kate, fresh off a shift, is called to rescue her werewolf friend Derek who was caught breaking into the home of one of her business associates. To get Derek out of trouble she agrees to go with Saimain, a true shape shifter, to The Midnight Games, an underground fight specializing in displays of paranormal brutality. She quickly discovers that Derek was trying to save a girl only to be caught, beaten nearly to death and left as a message for the rest of the pack. Kate's bit to save him from Saimain turns into a battle to either save Derek's life, or get revenge for his death.

Now she has to face the games to save her friends in the Pack, which has been outlawed by both the Knights and the Pack, which means she has to defy Curran, the Beast Lord (ruler of the Pack) in order to stop him and the Pack from being destroyed. Not to mention fighting in the ring again (plus being attached to so many people) might just open her up and expose that deep, dark secret she's been hiding for two books now.

Andrews nails a combination of tough and vulnerable in her heroine with an extra dose of sheer funny. She keeps the book clipping, and manages a perfect balance between a challenging plot and overwhelming. And in this book readers finally learn part of what Kate is hiding, which, as any good dark secret should do, just sets up an exciting promise for the future of the characters.

Put simply, these books are very, very good. If fights and funny and urban fantasy is something you enjoy this series should be tops on your buy list.

Kate's were friend Derek lands himself in major hot water in Magic Strikes. The two formed a bond when she took control of him and as a result had to claim him as a protector. That blood oath was released, but there are still major loyalty drives on both sides. In order to save him, Kate and some other weres must choose whether to disobey the Beast Lord's laws against the forbidden fighting ring. For the weres this potentially means a death sentence. As for Kate, well one never knows whether she is on the good or the bad side of the beast lord. As if angering the Beast Lord wasn't enough, she must be careful of showing her powers when it looks like her enemies of her heritage could be closing in.

Kate has been steadily building relationships with others even though it was ingrained into her while she was growing up to never trust anyone. I think this really has helped build her character and the series. Being a loner can be great considering how dangerous being her friend can be, but it was just too lonely for her. By trusting others she is finding support where she never thought she could. Her relationship with Curran, the Beast Lord has been building stronger and stronger. There is a major attraction there, and the sexual tension is really thick. Its only a matter of one or both of them caving from their refusal to relinquish any dominance. However, for those two that idea seems a near impossibility.

I didn't know how much I'd missed Ilona Andrews' writing until I started reading Magic Strikes. Part of it is the prose. It's vivid, it has a great streak of humor running through it, and best of all, it's smooth. The reader is never jolted out of the story by a grammar snafu or an awkward phrase.

Part of it is Andrews' continued use of a wide variety of myths. Andrews is one of the few urban fantasy authors who seem to realize folklore is a huge sandbox. The human imagination has dreamed up all sorts of things that go bump in the night; why stick to just vampires and werewolves? I won't reveal what creatures lurk within Magic Strikes, as that's part of the central mystery, but it's different from anything Andrews has done before.

Then there's the chance to see these characters again. Kate has grown beyond the misanthropic loner she used to be, though she still has some trust issues, and she certainly still has a sharp tongue! (She gets in some excellent jabs in this novel. I grinned.) We get to see further development in her friendships and a ratcheting up of the tension between her and Curran. We also learn more backstory, for both Kate and Curran, and get a better idea of what makes them the way they are.

The plot is tight and tense. Kate's young werewolf friend, Derek, is caught breaking into the home of the mysterious shapeshifter Saiman. Saiman is willing to let Derek go in exchange for a favor: Kate must accompany him to the Midnight Games. This is a supernatural gladiatorial tournament, highly illegal and extremely bloody. The situation spirals out of hand, and soon Kate and all her friends are in great danger.

I loved Magic Strikes, especially the last few chapters. All I can say without spoiling the plot is that I was deeply moved by the characters' heroics.

This is urban fantasy done right. Just go read it already!

I am so in love with this series and these characters. Great writing and world building. Full of action and the growing chemistry between Kate and Curran is off the charts. This has been my favorite book in the series thus far. Kate continues to be fierce and loyal and a bad ass. I can't wait to see what unfolds between her and the Beast Lord.

This series just keeps getting better & better!!!!!! Curran is my new book boyfriend.

In magic strikes, we learn way more about Kat's background and who her biological father is. Can't wait to see what happens with her family. Curran and Kat relationship we get to see that they really care about each other. The bathtub scene (just wow). Looking forward to reading the next book in the Kate Daniels series;)

This is the second book I have read of this author in this series and I love it. The fights are all different and engaging, no tedious sword moves (although there is some, after all she does carry a sword), but not overkill. The plot is inventive, and the world is just awesome. The characters are well developed and stay true to form--but don't expect much character growth in anyone except Derek. I personally was disappointed in the way Saiman wimped out, but he is still realistic.

Kate is strong, strong strong. This is how I wanted Anita Blake to be when I picked up one of those books (which I will not do again). Kate knows she's a monster that fights monsters, and she's good with that--no angst there about "am I a bad guy because I kill"--she just does what needs done. Love it.

And by the way, some people complain, but I love the fact that there is no gratuitous sex in here--its all story, story, story. The tension between Kate and Curran is still building, still steaming, but they both see the issues their relationship can cause.

Love it.

Ilona Andrews has done a wonderful job of walking that fine line between tough, sassy heroine and ridiculous, overly powerful superwoman. Kate Daniels is a unique character in a genre that is largely populated with carbon copies of the same woman. Kudos to Andrews, who has once again managed to balance the qualities of power and vulnerability to perfection.

Magic Strikes doesn't pick right up where Magic Burns left off. Time has passed for Kate and Andrews didn't feel compelled to fill in every little detail that happened off-screen. But, events have again conspired to lure Kate into situations where her loyalty to friends and fears of her past come into conflict. That tension is part of what makes these books worth reading.

An underground gladiatorial games of sorts provides the backdrop for the story as new villains emerge and looming threats from previous novels begin to actually take shape. The reader is not required to have perfect recall of the previous books, but minimal familiarity will help.

What Andrews does best is to create tension. Whether it's between Kate and her value system or Kate and Curran, the local lycanthrope leader, it's intense. But there's enough humorous dialogue to relieve the tension and actually make you chuckle a bit. I particularly like that Kate remains vulnerable. Whether it's her feelings, or actual physical attacks, she knows that there are some fights she can't win and there are some fights that she is willing to lose. That sense of possible death is what separates Ilona Andrews from most of the other urban fantasists.

That, and the fact that she doesn't put Kate to bed with every gorgeous creature who enters the story. Another wonderful installment.

This. Book. Has. Me. Flailing.

If the books before where awesome this one is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! I was in a cramped up position throughout the whole book. I came up for air around 3 am and realized that I, once again, wasted precious sleeping time for a book.
Was it worth it? Hell Yes!

I don't even know where to begin.
Saiman, the lovely neighborhood skin changer makes and appearance, and we get to learn more about him and his heritage (kept imagining Tom Hiddleston, it was hilarious)

There are a few new villain's on the block, and an old one.

Kate's past is explained, and we learn a little about little kitty Curran becoming His Furriness.

Kate kicks Jim's butt without violence (I'm still laughing at his expression)
We get to meet even more of the Pack.
Kate&Curran cat-mouse game continues, this time literary.

I thought I couldn't love Kate anymore than I do now, but damn, I was wrong.
It's the third book already, but it feels like we just dusted off this thing called her character, not even one layer was peeled off, and I marvel at the writing duo. I tip my hat off to you.

Derek is in serious trouble this time and his life hangs on by a thread, but Kate is there to save him at any cost.

The Gang (I'm calling them the gang from now on) find themselves trust in the "Midnight Games" an underground fighting tournament, where fighters fight to death to the joy of the audience.
But there's a catch, all shifters under Curran's order are forbidden to fight.
Obey or feel his wrath.
Do they listen? NO!

The fight for Derek's life before Curran finds them is on. If they don't complete it Derek will be killed, and Kate will cook in underwear.

It's action packed from the first word to the last.
I raced through the whole thing to get to the end and it very nearly killed me.
The Kate-Curran relationship is shaping out greatly, there was even a steamy moment.
I love how Curran treats Kate as his equal, respects her strength and the fact that she stands up to him.

The last part of the book was the best. Kate risked everything to save her Friends.
And Her Friends returned the favor. Derek is... different, but I still love him.
The ending is swoon worthy, and I can't wait to get my hands on the fourth installment!

5 stars.

This series keeps getting better and better.

There are so many wonderful characters, Kate, Andrea, Jim, Raphael, Julie, Curran, Derek, and Doolittle. I know there are more that I liked and enjoyed but these eight are my favorite.

Great character moments, I loved when Kate and Raphael made an appearance at Julie's school to help her when it comes to other students. When Derek was nearly killed I could feel how much pain Kate was in because her friend was so hurt. I love how loyal Kate is, even if she has to make a difficult choice she makes the one that will best help her friends. There were so many moments in this novel that I loved and that I want to read over and over again.

There's an entertaining plot, I loved the Midnight Games story and the mystery of why and how the shifters aren't able to change back to whatever form they're in.

There is also a great potential villian in the future that at this point has only been mentioned. Roland. I can hardly wait till Kate does meet up with him. It is bound to be epic.

As I said in the review for Book 1, the story is about a mercenary named Kate Daniels, who has a mysterious past, with superb fighting skills, and a fast mouth that sometimes gets her into trouble. She also has powerful magic that she doesn't show often for fear of attracting her enemies. In book one, she had a rough meeting with a powerful Lycanthrope Lord, and developed a love-hate situation with him that's not all about sex. Unlike the crap that is Anita Blake (another series), she doesn't screw everything that comes along her way.

Book 3 picks up loosely where Book 2 left off. You'd have to read the first 2 books to know the characters. In general, the characters are developed further, and details of Kate Daniel's past and her relationship with her father is fleshed out a little bit. The ending also promises new confrontations in the future books - something I'm looking forward to.

The story here centers around Kate's investigation into a underground Gladiator Ring, and a power new enemy that seems to be targetting the lycanthropes. The story is interesting and kept me going until I finished the whole book. I'd wished there was a book 4 to continue with, but settled for re-reading book1 and book2.

Great character develop (again), and kudos to the author for keeping it interesting. And please please please never let this degenerate into the kind of crap that is Anita Blake.

If you liked Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, this is a good alternative! Or vice versa, if you liked this series, try Jim Butcher's Dresden Files!

When the shift started the world we knew ended. Waves of magic swept over the world making technology inoperative and creating magical wielders along with creatures from myths real. People use magic even when technology works as the latter is rare.

Kate Daniels, a liaison between the Mercenary's Guild and Guild and the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, is a mercenary willing to do anything for a fee a long as it is on the side of good. Shapeshifter Derek asks her to deliver a note to a combatant in the Arena where gladiators fight one another for glory. Derek is caught by the Reapers and is tortured and left for dead. Jim, Chief of Security for the Alpha Beast Lord of Atlanta, maneuvers it so his team must fight in the Arena to obtain vengeance for Derek. Kate joins with a need to fight the Reapers. She will do what is necessary to kill them but not before learning who is behind the Reapers because she thinks it is someone close to her in blood, a person she needs to murder.

Ilona Andrews has written a compelling urban fantasy filled with intrigue, magic and action in a world in which technology collapsed under the tsunami of magic. The heroine is a kick butt person who fights for what she believes in no matter the odds because failure to do so means her adversaries triumph. Thus she has no qualms about battling the most powerful foes especially the deadly Reapers. Fans of Charlaine Harris and Kim Harrison will want to read MAGIC STRIKES.

These books just get better and better. This book captures so many of my favorite things about really great stories. There's the use of humor (which I thought was used more widely in this book) to balance out the dark and gritty. Then there's the fact that these books focus on the same characters and the development of their relationships with each other. By now, I'm totally invested in these characters and really care about what happens to them. Third, and I think that this one takes talent to pull off, there's a larger story arc that plays along side the self-contained plot. With each book, we get a clearer picture of how that larger story will play out. Also, the individual story line is starting to get tangled with the larger arc. This is one of the things that I loved the most about Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show and I really commend Ilona Andrews on being able to pull it off. It's not easy being ranked up there with Joss Whedon! Finally, Kate and Curran's relationship is my favorite. This is no instant made love where we'll just stick in the microwave and a couple of minutes later, it's done. No, this relationship is all about the slow heat that is building up to a huge explosion. After all, aren't food that's been slowly cooking just taste better? (for those who's read the book, food/meal pun totally intended)

My only grief? That there are no more Kate books until March 2010.

This series still blows my mind, literally. I don't even know how to review this. I mean there are no words. :)
A propeller operated flying Indian palace, weredingo. A monster fighting cage a la thunder-dome.

It has to be experienced. Kate is still my favorite of the UF heroines.

I always feel "right" spending time in her head. The humor, the heart, the way she reacts to things just make sense to me. Strangely enough I can relate. Because as a character, she just makes sense. Not sure how else to put this.

Oh Derek, my poor Derek.

The imagery that Ilona Andrews is able to create for me is astonishing. The creation of the colors, the smells, the feeling of physically being there.
That is what I want from reading. Its why I read.

_Magic Strikes_ by Ilona Andrews is the 3rd book in the Kate Daniels series (the previous two books are Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, Book 1) and Magic Burns). The main character in the series is Kate Daniels, a young woman who lives in an alternate version of Atlanta where magic and technology alternately have the upper hand.

The world created by Andrews is one that paralleled the real world until sometime in the 2000s, when magic returned to the world. Technology still fights back, and there are alternating waves of tech and magic. When the magic is up, firearms and internal combustion engines don't work, neither does electricity, and all the creatures of mythology like banshees and vampires and werewolves walk the earth. When the tech comes back up, all the normal conveniences work again and all the magical creatures are either reduced in power or turn back into normal humans.

In the middle of all this are the remnants of humanity who survived the first great surge of magic, and some of the various supernatural creatures who have organized enough to protect themselves. Vampires are inhuman senseless & mindless creatures controlled by necromancers who have formed a group called The People; they are led by a legendary figure named Roland. Werewolves, werejaguars, werehyenas, and were-everything-else either learn to live the Code which enforces the mental discipline they need to stay sane or they go violently nuts ('loup' in the books) and are hunted down like rabid animals; there is particularly large and well-organized group of were's in Atlanta who call themselves the Pack and they are led by Curran, a wereliger. And finally there is the Order, based on the old knightly orders, which tries to protect humanity from all the supernatural threats and who are themselves just as coldblooded as any of the threats they face.

In the middle of all this is Kate Daniels, all of 25 years old, a superb swordswoman with a mysterious past and a smart mouth that gets her into more trouble than even she deserves. She is not a Knight of the Order, but does work for them and currently serves as the official liaison between the Order and the Pack.

_Magic Strikes_ opens with Kate coming upon the remains of a murder scene involving a member of the Pack. The Pack having already claimed jurisdiction, she rides on but gets more and more embroiled as the book moves on. By halfway through the book, she is involved in highly illegal gladiatorial cage matches, fighting with powerful creatures from Hindu mythology, and frantically trying to figure out what power could prevent a werewolf from both changing and regenerating. She has to do all this while trying to avoid Curran, top alpha of the pack, who is wooing her (in his own straightforward yet confusing way) as a future mate and who is also more than a bit unhappy about members of the Pack being involved the cage matches.

Each Kate Daniels book has gotten better than the last (which I am thankful for, since _Magic Bites_ was way gorier and savage than I liked) and in this one the writing was superb. Hints about Kate's origins and parentage are finally fully revealed, and book 4 in the series promises to be stunning as Kate has finally come to the attention of some powerful players who can't let her live. The banter between Kate and her friends was VERY well done, as was the black humor found among those who are facing death on a daily basis. The romantic tension between Andrea and Raphael was hilarious as was the romance (or lack thereof) between Kate and Curran. Both Kate and Curran are have definite alpha personalities with a lot of prickly pride and stubborn independence and I have to commend Andrews for doing such an excellent job with a budding romance between two such personalities.

I almost quit reading the series after the first book, but I am very glad I stuck with it. And _Magic Strikes_ is interesting enough and fills in enough detail that it could probably be read on its own and still be a fascinating read.

Definitely five stars.

This series just gets better and better. The writing is intense, the storyline is smart, action packed and the cast of characters are a lot of fun. In Magic Strikes, Kate is surrounded with an investigation revolving an underground fighting ring. I enjoyed every scene with Kate and the Beast Lord, Curran. I never knew if Kate and Curran are going to kiss or start throwing punches when they meet up. Kate can be such a smart-ass at times, she had me laughing out loud. I was turning page after page during the scenes with the fighting ring. The ending had me on the edge and shocked me. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who loves action, mystery, and a heroin who can kick butt! To fully enjoy this series start with book one Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, Book 1) and also check out Curran: Volume I (Curran POV) (e-book), where you get a few scenes with Curran's point of view. There is also a short to check out after Magic Strikes Magic Mourns: A Companion Novella to Magic Strikes:A Penguin eSpecial from Berkley

Urban fantasy fans, rejoice! Ilona Andrews latest Kate Daniels story is kick a$$ from start to finish. This series has a bit of romance (so far without consummation, but still hot), a heaping helping of humor, more paranormal critters than you can shake a stick at, a heroine who's a trained killer with a conscience, and enough high drama and action for anybody. In other words, if you like fantasy, urban fantasy, etc...go get this series.

Kate's had a rough week. Waves of magic are wreaking havoc in Atlanta and she hasn't been able to go even half a day without some strange smelling blood fouling her clothes and shoes. The last thing she wants is a call from Saiman--a morphing creature who's developed the hots for her. But Saiman has caught her friend Derek breaking Pack law and Kate can't bear the thought of what Curran the Beast Lord would have to do to punish him. Not to mention Curran seems to be treating Kate like a potential Alpha mate...and she's not a were! The chain of events continues downhill and now Derek's barely alive, Kate's hiding from Curran, and it looks like the only way to save her friends will be for Kate to reveal herself to her nemesis.

I love this series. The stories aren't overly long or elaborate; yet they're as intricate and tightly woven as any reader could wish for. Each book reveals a few more tidbits about Kate's life, her past, and her possible futures. The action is non-stop yet it's not til the end of the book that you grasp the detailed sequence of events and decisions that have dovetailed into an exquisite finale. Yes, this story is finished, but there's no doubt that we still have further adventures with Kate to enjoy. For me, there's not enough stars for this series.

I listened to this book on audio and I found my mind didn't drift away too much on this one. This time around we learn a bit more about Kate, poor Derek is put in harms way (poor Derek, that kid really deserves a break), Kate and Curran do the humorous verbal sparring thing they do so well and a lot of other magical and gory stuff happens. Sorry, that's all I've got. I listened to it last week and had no time to write and my short term memory just ain't what it used to be.

I think I enjoyed this book more than the previous two. I found the wit more sharply honed and became very invested in several of the characters. I just loved the bit with Raphael and the romance novels especially the fact that he read them and knows he can't/won't/doesn't want to measure up to them, LOL. So very cute. I also adored Curran's menu at the very end. That was hilarious.

It made me laugh and even get a little teary. Good stuff and recommended.

The urban paranormal books keep escalating both in number of authors and the amazing, consistent high quality of the writing. This, third in the series, is best to be read in that place and not as a stand alone novel. Too many complex characters, rich relationships would be missed if you stepped out and read this novel first. Keep it in the background until you have caught up and know there is an especial treat waiting for you. ALthough many writers will fall into the more expected images and stories from Celtic mythology, this novel is the first I've read to include deep, Hindi mythology in storytelling. The story is so involved the temptation may be to give up--but don't. The ending just makes it worth all the effort. Plus not just ANYBODY know in-depth Hindi mythology. So you win with an outstanding story, memorable characters in an amazing setting and an introduction to a remarkable new group of myths and images.

So I was a fan of the Kate Daniels series anyway. The first two were just good for me. They didnt captivate me, they didnt dazzle me. But with each book it has gotten better and better and then then comes Magic Strikes. WOW. I LOVED this book! I want to read it over and over again. The character development was great and I LOVED the story line between Kate and Curran. He has got to be one of my favorite male characters in a book. He makes me angry, makes me laugh, and tries really hard to be good even though he is protrayed as somewhat bad. There are very few books that I really like all of the characters, most of the time I have at least one I really dislike. Not with this book - they are all great and I laughed out loud at least a dozen times. Especially at the last page! I cant wait til the next book, and I am kinda sad that the authors website says we wont get another one for a while! :(

Ilona Andrews is one of those rare urban fantasy authors who just keeps getting better and better with each book.

Seriously, the woman spins up lightning-fast action, magic and a strong, self-deprecating heroine who knows her way around the sword like few ever could. Her third Kate Daniels book "Magic Strikes" is a brilliant example of all three -- Andrews has gotten solid footing in her unstable, magic-soaked world, and spins an elaborate story with no easy answers or solutions.

Kate was already having a rotten night (involving an elderly banshee on a telephone pole) when Saiman called -- her werewolf buddy Derek tried to break into his apartment.

To save Derek's hide (and avoid charges), Kate agrees to accompany Saiman to the Midnight Games, a fighting-anime-style tournament where supernaturals of all kinds fight to the death. It turns out that both Saiman and Derek are interested in the Reapers, a gang of inexplicably powerful humans who are winning round after round. Unfortunately, Curran has forbidden any weres to get involved in the Games (due to a past disaster involving a werebear).

At the same time, there are a series of killings in Atlanta -- horribly murdered weres that somehow didn't change shape -- which Jim has kept secret. When Derek is found beaten and savaged almost to death, Kate involves herself deeper by following the Reapers into their jungle lair... only to discover their true horrible nature, and a magical stone that may be able to destroy all the weres. The only way to stop the Reapers: win the tournament!

Ilona Andrews is rapidly becoming a sort of female Jim Butcher -- her books are made out of a tangle of interconnected subplots, a tough heroine with a very unglamorous job, and lots of werebeasties, monsters, and mythic creatures. "Magic Strikes" actually jumps up another notch above "Magic Burns," especially since Andrews reveals some interesting new facts about the characters (for instance, we FINALLY learn what Saiman really is -- and it's a shock).

Fortunately she also has the writing chops to keep the storyline moving, mainly because of her horrific descriptions of the disfigured and dismembered weres (including poor Derek, who gets turned into hamburger) and the savage magical duels in the Games. But there's also some wonderfully snappy lines ("I drive you mad and you want to strangle me." "Once! I did it once!") and some moments of relaxed humour (Raphael's tale of how his dad won his mom).

She also delves into some unusual monsters for an urban fantasy -- the rakshasa, Indian monsters with lotsa powers and not too much brains. Also in the games: a very old vampire, a lamia, an oni, a Fu lion, a silver golem, and so on.

Though she was once too angry and gung-ho, Kate is now an outstanding urbfantasy heroine -- she's tough, strong, caring and has a rather unglamorous job and self-deprecating sense of humor. She also spends most of the book doing the sexual-tension tango with Curran, who finds his iron-clad laws in conflict with the Pack's well-being. And Andrews shows a bit more of the personalities of the mysterious trickster Saiman (including his TRUE form) and the werewolf teen Derek.

"Magic Strikes" is a brilliant blend of gritty fantasy, high-speed action and twisty-turny conspiracy -- and it promises to become even more thrilling in future. Fans of strong women and lots of action need apply.

Why yes I am now a diehard fan of Ilona (and Gordon) Andrews and the Kate Daniels series. Why do you ask?

Book 3 is the best one yet. The tension between Kate and Curran flies off the charts. Little Julie, sexy bouda Rachel, sharpshooter Andrea, teen were Derek and werepanther Jim are all back! Let me not forget mother-hen Dr. Doolittle too. I couldn't be happier. Each of these characters is so well written and well rounded, they practically jump off the page.

We also learn more about the mystery behind Kate's blood and the connection to her biological father. Cannot wait for the ultimate showdown between her and Daddy dearest. Equally looking forward to the Kate-Curran battle of love.

Off to track down book 4!

The Good: This series is super fast paced and full of action. Nothing drags the story. I just can't put them down once I start one. Magic Strikes is when the Kate/Curran tension gets ramped up like crazy. Sexy as hell. Waiting for Kate to get out of her own damn way, because Curran - just wow. The whole Midnight Games situation was really interesting. Well, more than interesting - I got very into it - but Kate/Curran just kind of eclipsed everything else.

The Bad: Not a thing.

Waw! Magic Strikes was the best book so far in this series. I loved all the books so far and gave them 5 stars, but this one was a 5+++ stars.

I can't really say much about the story without revealing anything. But I can say this much, it was a story full of suspence with brutal, evil, heartless enemies (when I think what happened to Derek it still brings tears to my eyes) but it's also a story of people sticking toghether and doing what needs to be done no matter what the concequences will be.

Curran finally made some progress in concurring Kate, but Kate stopped it before it could go any further, aargh! I want to see these 2 toghether, although it is great fun to read about all that tension between them.

I read book one and some of book in this series and hated them, so I did not plan to read another one. However, I noticed that book three was getting really good reviews so I got it. I am so glad I did because the great reviews are not wrong. Kate was so hateful in the first two books, but now she has become a caring, but still tough, character. She puts her life in grave danger in order to protect her friends and her beloved Curran. Curran, in my opinion, has become the sexiest male character in the urban fantasy genre. Romance is not a central part of this book, so readers who do not like a lot of romance will be happy. There is plenty of action, but also great character development. I actually care about the characters in this book. I LOVE how this book ends, and I really look forward to the next installment in the series.

This series started off good, then became great and now with Magic Strikes is just plain freakin awesome!!! This is one of my all time favorite series. I love Kate Daniels. So what if she kicks major a$$, she gets beat up while doing it and she's not all knowing and all powerful like some other heroines. She makes mistakes. She's is so much more, but she tries to be human. She is opening herself up. She has friends and she's a pretty cool Aunt to Julie. The clincher for me though is Curran. IA made us fall in love with Curran in just a couple of scenes in the previous books, he was never a major focal point. Now with MS I am in Curran overload. I love it. All I know is that when this series ends, I am swear I am going to cry like a baby. I am crying anyways waiting for the next Kate Daniels adventure. sigh.

Another damn good read in the Kate Daniels series. Kate is a great protagonist and the other characters are very well fleshed out. The action is fast and furious, with lots of plot twists. Kate's past is catching up with her, not to mention Curran's very different pursuit. More of Kate's back story is revealed. The authors' world building is terrific - I just want to know about the cataclysm that brought magic into the modern world with such devastating results.

I'm really enjoying this series. Kate is a strong character with a (for lack of a better word) strange past. She knows what she wants in her future and she knows it would mean she would have to distance herself from everyone. Yet, in this novel, we discover that regardless of all these things, Kate has come to care about others and she really puts herself forward and risk all for those she considers friends.

It is great fun to read this book. The inner dialogue of Kate as well as her interaction with other characters are very witty and even sometimes laugh out loud funny. The action is strong and the plot is always focused. I look forward to reading more and more, although I cringe a little inside because I know her friends are going to eventually find out her secret and I wonder how Andrews plans to handle this aspect of Kate's.

All right, this is no time for subtlety. This book was genius. Oh yes, Ilona Andrews. This book was the shizz. I don't even have anything to say except Kate, Curran, and crew were total, fierce bad-asps in a freaking gladiator style pit fighting arena filled with mythological and supernatural creatures. Even Saiman blew my mind in this one. (I'm a huge Saiman fan.)

I can't believe I waited so long to continue with this series. Kate Daniels is one of the best all-time female heroines in urban fantasy. This is one of my favorites, ever.

Finally, the backstory of Kate Daniels. Not the whole thing, but enough. More development with Curran, more involving characters from past novels. This was a great installment, but the only missing piece (for me) were the power words.

Kate uses a bunch of different power words in this book, and I still remember how they were 'spun' as a major source of secrecy and power in the first novel. She isn't coy about them, and this remained dissonant with my picture of her as a character.

The plot is fast moving, involving an incursion by a foreign power on the territory of the shape shifters and arena bloodsports. Kate is in the middle of the action, which is exactly what I want as a reader.

The novel was very good, but room for improvement existed. A recommended read, as good as the first two in the series.

So for most of the book I thought it was ok. I kept telling myself that I liked the 2nd book better. The more I read, the more I liked it though. Of course, the ending was great and bumped it up an entire star!

This is the grittiest one so far. It's got some pretty graphic descriptions of violence so be forewarned. This book focuses mainly on the Midnight Games (kind of like gladiators - fight to the death).

I like how Kate refers to Julie as her kid. Julie gets to use her gift in this one, too. I loved the ridiculously silly scene with Kate, Raphael, and the horses. I like the relationship that she has with the pack. More trust there. In the beginning I was very worried because I didn't know where things were going. I really liked Derek and his pretty boy face! The authors sure do write a great story!

We learn a lot more things about Kate and her secrets. It was revealed rather nicely. We found out why she's very good at what she does. We see more of Saiman, though I still don't why Kate isn't nicer to him? Anyone know? We are also introduced to a new character, Dali. I like her, though I was surprised to see she was 28.

Yes! More Curran! Super glad to see all the improvement with them. It's nice to see them try so hard not to kill or kiss each other. I like that this series is a breath of fresh air and that the heroine doesn't sleep with almost every guy that crosses her path. Heck, she doesn't even get far with her crush - which makes for an awesome read. Can I even call them crushes? Soul mates in denial might be a better description. She (most of the time) thinks about the results of her actions.

I hope to get the fourth book soon. I really enjoy this series!! Easily one of my favorite series so far. So do I recommend this one as well? You better believe it!

Loved this book.

Made me laugh out loud in various places. Witty and compelling.
With interesting character interactions, and a fun not to mention gripping plot.

In addition the writers take an innovative approach to vampires and mythology. The vampires are more like zombies and are piloted by human telepaths or navigators. And the villians are rakshahsas from Hindu mythology. Also there's a character who is the grandson of Loki, and part Frost Giant.

Imaginative, witty, action-packed, with a touch of romance thrown in. Highly recommended.

What a terrific read! This series gets better with each new book. Author Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels is a very different heroine in a sea of ass-kicking females with superlative martial abilities and magical talents, who interact with shape-shifters, vampires and myriad mythological creatures. (And, readers, these vampires are nothing like any you have seen before.) Savvy, gutsy, fast on her feet - in particular, I enjoy Kate's analytical thought process, her observations, how she gleans conclusions from minute details.

If you have read the first two in this series, you will know Kate lives in an Atlanta eroded by magic. The citizens have learned to adapt to life that has them in a technological society one moment and a magical one the next. Kate works for the Order of Knights of the Merciful Aid, and it is her job to clean up nasty things caused by the aftermath of magic.

This time something is using particularly gruesome methods to kill shape shifters and leaving their bodies near the shape shifters' "houses." When Kate comes upon one of these murders, she is sent on her way by her old friend Jim, the security chief for the Beast Lord Curran. Kate should leave it alone, but when young shape shifter Derek is brutally tortured and left for dead, Kate refuses to be kept out. She makes the connection to a band of gladiators named Reapers, who are participating in the Midnight Games. Although the Reapers pass all the tests that qualify them as human beings, Kate knows they are not. She discovers what they really are, and that they are after the prized Wolf Diamond, and their possession of it could eventually lead to the annihilation of the shape shifters. Kate must stop the Reapers, discover how to heal Derek, avoid the wrath of the Beast Lord, and stay below the radar of the greatest enemy she will ever face.

We learn fascinating information about Kate's parents and history, and also that of Jim and Derek. Kate's relationship with Beast Lord Curran heats up - to a point. Kate is torn where Curran is concerned; she wants him but refuses to be just one of his many conquests. Curran is a great character and his interaction with Kate tempts me to say she means far more to him than a conquest, but with Ms. Andrews, you cannot anticipate where the plot is going.

Magic Strikes has humor, tension, incredible action, engaging repartee, and so much more. This is a series you do not want to miss. I highly recommend it to lovers of urban fantasy

In Magic Strikes, the third installment of the Kate Daniels series, Kate finds herself wrapped up in the fight of her life when she finds her friend Derek nearly dead from a fight that no one can explain. Her investigation leads her to an invitation-only Gladiator style competition, the Midnight Games, where the fighters are deadly and magical. In order to save Derek and the city of Atlanta, Kate must infiltrate the Midnight Games and defeat those responsible for nearly killing Derek.

Each book of the series thus far has featured mythical creatures from different areas of the world. Magic Strikes is no different--Hindu mythology takes the forefront in this book as Kate's investigation unfolds. I am really liking how the mythology is different in each book. While it is just a taste of what the mythology is, it's introducing me to so many new things that I can go and read about. I think the books are mainly meant to be a quick, fun read so I can't complain much about them being short on explanation. It gives just enough explanation that I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.

The mythical creatures are so menacing which is an aspect of this book that I love. Gone is the paranormal/urban fantasy with just romance and questionable female characters. Kate Daniels is awesome! She kicks so much booty in this book and her powers and back story keep developing. It just makes me like her more. The gladiator theme of this book is so appropriate because Kate Daniels reminds me a little bit of a Spartan from the movie 300. She is tough as nails and cares a great deal for her friends. There is more romance in this book, but there's so much action that the romance doesn't overwhelm the book. I'm not a huge fan of romance, but Curran and Kate's interaction continues to leave me wanting more so Ilona Andrews must be writing the romance right!

The humor is also not lost in Magic Strikes. In addition to the action, this book is flat out funny at times. There are times when I caught myself laughing out loud and getting looks from my husband like I was a crazy woman. Kate's internal commentary often bleeds snark and it often comes out in the dialogue to her own detriment. Her friends are also really likeable people, and I really root for all of them. They all argue like family but work together well as a team.

I'm a little sad that I'm getting toward the end of published books. Ilona Andrews has been contracted to write seven books but as of now, only four are published. I'm going to crack open the fourth book of the series, Magic Bleeds, right after I finish this review and then pine away with all my friends who are Kate Daniels fans until the fifth book is published. If you haven't read the earlier books in the series, you really should start at the beginning of the series (Book 1 is Magic Bites and Book 2 is Magic Burns) because you'll miss some of the character development if you read them out of order. They can be read as stand-alone books, but the relationships between characters in the books definitely have a continuity throughout the series that is best read from the beginning.

If you are looking for an ultra fun series that is quick and enjoyable, I highly recommend picking up this series.

*Notice of Disclosure: I received this book for review from Penguin Books.

this third installment was a great read. it was full of action and interaction. kate and curran rock in their scenes together. this time derek has managed to find a bag of trouble, which will change his life forever. at the same time the body parts of a shifter are found, but nobody bothers to tell the beast lord. the author manages to make the reader both laugh and hold their breath for the next event. unfortunately the publisher gollanz has not got the next two books magic bleeds and magic slays on kindle (hint, hint @ the publisher), so i ordered the paperbacks. i can't wait to find out what happens next. i highly recommend this exciting supernatural series.

I personally liked the first 2 more that this one but its a good continuance of the series. I did get a little tired of the character descriptions. They all seemed to be rock hard muscle in some form or another and it was mentioned often. There were also a couple of parts where what happened didn't fit with the narrative up to that point and the moment felt like it was just put there to further the plot later down the line. Apart from those 2 minor things I enjoyed the story, especially the last half of the book. This one also goes a long way into humanizing Kate. Bringing her relationships to the front more which sheds light on a sort of inner fight between the person she would naturally be and the person she was raised to be.

Kate Daniels is one of my favorite heroines in contemporary fantasy. One of the reasons is the hard work and solid characterization put in by Ilona and Gordon Andrews. Readers get to see character development based on a consistent value system.

In this third installment of the "Magic" series which began with "Magic Bites," Kate is facing a new enemy who want to do away with the half-breed weres. The Rakshasa are crueler than anything Kate's fought before, wreaking devastating damage on their victims. The center of the action takes place in a gladiator-style arena where both sides contest for a magical treasure that will give them reign over the other.

Of course, Curran is back, too. And the tension is definitely heating up between him and Kate. He means to have her as mate and she'd rather strangle him--or would she?

While my review paints this story as serious, Andrews pens some lines and scenarios that had me screaming with laughter as I read long past the time I intended to go to bed, totally unable to put the book down. Character development, action, romance, humor, and strong pacing all add up to the best read so far in the series. I hope there are many more to come from this very talented and hard-working team.

I really like this series. Although the cover art and titles are unfortunate, they hide a nicely developed action/romance/fantasy yarn set in a unique universe.

There's just a touch of romance, the right amount for my taste, and the author writes with a vigorous imagination that seems to hold nothing back. I really enjoy the creatures and situations she comes up with, and the mix of familiar tropes (the werecreatures) with new spins (the vampires and other magical creatures) and the twist on the "phased" magic approach similar to other series with a "magic on/magic off" based history.

This was a good entry in the series, advancing the overal plot while satisfyingly resolving the plot of the novel, putting characters in peril but not ending in unreasonable or unbelievable tragedy or abuse.

Can't wait for the next entry in this series. Hope she graduates to hardcover, gets some more inventive direction for her cover artist (really, this is a better novel than that art would indicate), and uses some more evocative adjectives in the next choice of title. <-- said with love.

I'm very very glad I stuck with the series!! Magic Strikes, the third in the Kate Daniels series, was a fantastic read that I devoured (pardon my pun) in literally a day!! I thought there were a few holes in the first book of the series, Magic Bites, Kate's powers weren't really well defined and I was scratching my head the first time she talked about power words. But the charcter development overall was good and brought me here to the third installment, which was action packed...on the battle field and also between Kate and Curran, I'll stop there :) I'm a huge fan of early Laurell K Hamilton and I think the Kate Daniels series delivers a paranormal punch in the same way. Can't to start in on book 4!!

I thought I liked the first 2 books of this series; then I read this one and fell in love!

I don't want to give away too much, or anything at all. The dialogue is getting better, Kate is getting funnier and Curran is going to have to become real so I can marry him.

All skills are tested in this book. We start to get more information about who Kate really is, and what makes her so powerful. The chemistry between Curran and Kate is getting unbearable, for them and me! But she's not some dimwitted woman who falls for just anyone because he's cute (a.k.a. Rachel Morgan).

Read this, fall in love and kick yourself if you forgot to take home the next book...

Kate Daniels work for the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, and when her werewolf friend Derek is discovered, almost dead and horribly disfigured, it all leads to the Midnight Games, an invitation-only, ultimate supernatural fighting tournament and this new group of mysterious fighters who seem invincible. She and Curran, the Beast Lord, start to uncover a dark plot that may forever alter the werewolf community.

Who are this mysterious group? And will Curran and Kate be able to stop whoever is trying to permanent get rid of the werewolves.

I absolutely loved this book. I loved the plot, I definitely love the characters, especially Curran, and I admit, I'm pretty much a huge fan girl of the Kate Daniels series. I feel Magic Strikes is one of the best books of the three in the series so far. Kate's definitely grown up but continues to be her butt-kicking self. Curran is as fabulous as ever. All the other secondary characters only add more awesomeness to the story.

Magic Strikes is a fast-paced, action-packed, fantastic dark fantasy and I'm more than ever looking forward to more of Andrews' books.

Kate Daniels is a strong character with a secret past she can't let anyone know about. Her entire purpose in life is to kill her father, but before she can do that she must train and be the best she can be. Most of this novel takes place in an arena, which is pretty interesting. I hung on every word and every fight described. The rest of the novel was heart felt and intriguing. All of the characters are multidimensional and unique. I'm enjoying every bit of this series. My only qualm about this book is Kate's continuing denial of feelings between her and Curran. I understand that she thinks he just wants to conquer her then leave, but if she is attracted to him too, I'm not sure I understand the problem. There isn't anything in her past that we know about that would make her seem scared to be in a relationship. Hopefully she will get over her fear of actually liking someone in the future. I can't wait until we get to the showdown between Kate and her ultimate enemies, but I'm content to read about her adventures along the way.

Ever since I started this series (not too long ago), it's been a complete thrill ride! It has everything: characters that get under your skin, some of the best fight scenes, absolute humor/wit/charm and a tad of bloody violence... All wrapped up in some serious sexual angst with two very strong protagonists. Everything a gal like me loves and then some! I've read a lot of books, and I can honestly say up to this point, this is one of my faves, hands down. They just keep getting better and keep surprising me! I've never laughed out loud so much with a book; it makes me giddy. This is a Must Read for Urban Fantasy readers and anyone who simply wants a good time.

This third book in the Kate Daniels series is a delight. It has none of the flaws that too often trip up series writers, such as repackaging old, tired scenes and hoping no one notices. Andrews plays out plot lines continuing from the first two books with skill, adding details and resolving questions so that the reader is satisfied while also creating tensions and questions so that the reader is left anticipating the next book. Andrews has also put in her research time, weaving coherent storylines around complex religious mythology. Happily, the characters continue to evolve yet stay true to their foundations, letting the reader enjoy the tale without any unpleasant character dissonance. All in all, an enjoyable, exciting read, one of the best in the genre for plain fun.

Book Three, Magic Strikes is just battles within battles; some are physical, some emotional, and some of love. Ilona Andrews writes and embellish the story perfectly. It was action packed and addicting. My only hangup was I couldn't keep track of all the Indian gods. Too many too follow that I skimmed through those sections. I'll be re-reading if it comes up in a later book. Well recommended!

Let me start by saying I only write reviews when I absolutely love a book. Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews is one such book. While I was reading this book my boys thought I had lost my mind because at times I was laughing out loud to the point of tears and at other times I was moved to the point of overwhelming sadness. The whole story about the dating of the female alpha werehyena had me doubled over with laughter especially since I had once done this to one of my co-worker's desk. I don't really like to much blood and gore but in this case it is so integral to the plot and understanding the characters that it was absolutely necessary. I thought the first two books in this series were good, but Ilona really found the characters voice in this one. I can't wait to move on to the fourth in the series!

I am a huge fan of urban fantasy. I love getting lost in another world. Ilona Andrews creates a world so believable that getting lost isn't the problem, wanting to come back to reality is the problem.

Ilona Andrews' writing makes me want to pull a Dunkin Donuts commercial and shout how much I love it from the roof tops. Seriously. I'm so not kidding. Y'all might read about me in the paper later today. Cause let me tell you, once I get up there, I'm not coming down til everyone buys EVERY book in the KATE DANIELS series. If I'm going to be on the roof, so are the rest of y'all.

One of the things I like best about this series is the heroine, Kate Daniels. Kate is so believable that she just leaps from the page. I particularly like her vulnerability mixed with strength. Those two qualities are hard to portray without coming across as too vulnerable or too super-hero-ish.

Ilona Andrews is a master story-teller. MAGIC STRIKES is impossible to put down. I've read it three times since receiving it. I may read it again today.

If you were hoping I'd tell you all kinds of spoilers in this review, you are pretty disappointed right about now. I'm not a spoiler. I don't have it in me. What I want is for you to read the blurb, take my advice and jump into this series along with me.

My review is to let you know that Ilona Andrews rocks! Every book in this series has been totally awesome and MAGIC STRIKES is no exception. If you're looking for exceptional world building, delicious story telling and adventure so great you want to burst from your chair and join in, Ilona Andrews is the author for you.

If you haven't tried this series, go to the store TODAY! MAGIC BITES: Book 1 is totally awesome! HOW can you resist my pleas. You can't. While you're there, go ahead and get MAGIC BURNS : Book 2. It is also omg awesome! Let me tell you, you must go ahead and pre-order MAGIC STRIKES : Book 3. Trust me. It will make you beg for more. Also, you will be glad you aren't wasting time waiting for the store to send them. If you are forced to wait, you'll suffer. I don't want you to suffer. I want you to have instant gratification.

If you are like me, a Kate Daniels addict, and you haven't pre-ordered MAGIC STRIKES , consider yourself flogged. PRE-ORDER the book. Don't make me report you. I will. It's best not to test me.

The only thing that I am not happy about is it would take too long before I can read the fourth book (next year!!!). True, 'Must Love Hellhounds' and 'On the Edge' are available now so that will have to do.

The third book is a little longer than the first two but it still is relatively shorter than most of the urban fantasy.
I don't agree with part of the Indian Epic but I suppose it depends upon which reference we are using.
Many of the secrets start to reveal themselves whether they are Kate's or Saiman's or anybody else.

It is full of funs and excitements (not counting some suspense). Great book.

I was a little disappointed in the first and second book of the series, but this book was better. However, I felt that the concept was better than the reality of this book, and they could've done much more than the did. Don't get me wrong, it was great, but I did find myself wanting to skim over some of the elaborately described fights scenes and hope for more backstory concerning the mythology and universe of the series. The relationship with Curran is still just lagging on in slow mo, but that's the way it is, so I can wait, but this book is not a paranormal romance.

I read that book 6 in this series will have Hugh in it! Yes. After I read about him I just hoped to be getting more. Andrews' works remind me of the early LKH's Anita Blake series. Of course, now I eye new LKH books and get an image of furry pigs having an orgy in a slaughter house. Then I fight to keep food down. Anyway, all that grossness aside, I just want to say that I am now on rebound books after having read Andrews' 3rd installment in the Kate Daniels series. I keep picking up book after book in the same genre, hoping for a decent read (and sadly not getting any). I've gone through a dozen first books of a dozen series and still haven't purchased the second book in any of these series. They simply don't measure up. Hmm.. am I confusing everyone? What a kickass, action packed series! This latest installment in the Kate Daniels saga picks up a couple of months after the last and does not disappoint. (Read other reviews for storyline detail.)

Ilona Andrews has created a wonderful urban fantasy world with a tough chick leading the action. Kate can more than hold her own against the big bad boys and while she doesn't need anyone to lean on, the relationship brewing between Kate and the Beast Lord, Curran, had better see some serious action in the next book. This little waltz they've been doing has certainly been a good build up but dragging this particular thread beyond KD#4 would definitely be over the top.

IA remains true to their characters and storyline. Most of the main characters we met in the first and second installment are back in the third and contribute well. I even like the way Julie, Kate's "adopted" daughter from Magic Burns, is handled. She hasn't mysteriously disappeared like some unwanted detail. The scene at Julie's school is pure Kate!

My only concern? It looks like the next KD installment is in an anthology and focuses on Andrea. I'm not sure I get that. I'm guessing the next full length KD is another year away.

If you have not read the Kate Daniels series get all three books now and be prepared not to do anything else until you've finished reading the last word in Magic Strikes.

Strikes is probably the best so far in this series, the mythology and plot are woven together coherently into a sort of mortal kombat for fantasy creatures, the overarching story-line advances nicely and there is even some brief kissey kissey moments for those who misinterpret the fantasy part of urban fantasy genre...

I loved Magic Bites! I thought Magic Burns was okay. I just finished Magic Strikes and I'm back to loving it! You learn more about Kate's familial history in this book including who raised her and who her mother and father are. There is more Curran in this book and I like how he and Kate are a team in the later part of the book. Very nice ending and I'll be onto Book 4 soon....

I read the first in this series on a red-eye. When I got home again I read the remaining books in the series immediately. Each one became my favoite. This one for the really tight plotting and blossoming romances. At times, many times, there is danger and violence alternating with funny. The action is breathtaking in execution, detail and surprises. The characters are so well developed I feel like I know them peronally. This is what Urban Fantasy should be.

This is the best of the series. The books just keep getting better and better, which usually doesn't happen in a series. I found the descriptions in the first and second book a little difficult to visualize but this book is just so clear and concise. The story line with curran and kate is just fantastic. I hope the author keeps them apart so their relationship stays interesting. I like to see them fight. But you really come to care about all the characters in this book more so than in the others. I can't wait for number 4.

This book was awesome! Best book in the series so far. I stayed up till 4AM finishing it because I knew I would not be able to get to sleep until I reached the end! Can't WAIT to read the next one! This series got off to a rocky start, for me...just because it took me so long to figure out what was going on in the first book. However, it has DEFINITELY been worth it and I think it may be up there among my favorites now.

It had been awhile since I had read the first two books in this series, and after reading Magic Strikes, I was inspired to re-read them over the Easter weekend. This is very rare, as I have a pretty strong retention which makes re-reads a little boring. This series is anything but boring. I wish Ms. Andrews had published more titles to tide me over for the wait til the next in this series. But the wait is worth it!

Each book just keeps making this series better. The grit, the action, and the relationships are all extremely believable in a make believe world full of myth, magic and monsters.

I highly recommend this book (third in the series) and whole series to anyone looking for a well written, engaging, action packed story.

I don't think I like the way this review is set up. I found the book filled with hope, occasional humor, soms suspense, surprises, a few twists. I enjoyed it a lot. I've picked up 4 but haven't had time to listen to it yet. I'll be eventually reading the whole series.

This book was fantastic - great action, humor, and character development. All of the characters continue to be well developed, and Kate's background is revealed even further, not stepping around facts like many other series. The Kate/Curren relationship is progressed, with some edge-of-your seat scenes. Best yet! Can't wait to read the 4th and 5th books.

It would be interesting to see this turned into an action movie or made for tv series; though the special fx budget would be astronomical. The subplot is turning into a bad romance novel. There needs to be less of that and more fighting.

This book was amazing. The action was nonstop the plot was amazing and there was really good character development. This one of the few new series that I have found that draws me in from page 1. I love the chemistry the characters have and the fact that Kate is an awesome heroine who you can relate to. I can't give this book enough stars it was excellent and is a must read. The series continues to grow and get better and better. If you do not have the book it is essential that you run and get

Loved it. If you thought the second book was good, its nothing compared to the third. Curran, Kate, everyone is just such a interesting character. The world that has been built for this series just keeps getting more interesting as well. Looking forward to more about Kate's eventual battle with her father and the relationship between her and Curran.

This is one of my favorite series to the point that I waited to read this one so I could spend some time looking forward to it. It did not disappoint. If you are looking for a new fantasy read this series is a good choice.

Magic Bites, Magic Burns and now, Magic Strikes: buy the books all at one time. You won't be sorry. It is an entirely new fantasy world that you want to fall into. Her rules are different than other fantasy worlds, yet still believable in that whole "suspension of belief" kind of way. Kate Daniels is a heroine that you can easily like and understand. Whereas her love interest, the hottie Mchotness himself, Curran, is more complex. Which makes them both fun to read. LOVED IT.

This is my favorite book in the series (so far). I love Ilona Andrews writing. Her characters are witty, her setting is amazing, and her plots are completely captivating. I recommend reading every book in this series if you like Urban Fantasy.

I did struggle to get into the first book if I am completely honest but as soon as I did I could not put it down. The second one I purchased straight away and read it any chance I could but nothing compares to Magic Strikes. The sexual tension between Curran and Kate is beyond belief and it leaves you on a cliff hanger with their relationship which is kind of what I expected. The storey line is superb and I can say I would never have guessed the outcomes that happen. Kate's character builds in this one and I was in hysterics at some points. Not sure if I can wait for the next one to come out. Keep up the hard work Ilona Andrews because if anything it's just going to get better and better. I recommend this book to anyone who loves something a bit different.

Here she goes again, why is it always the people she cares about the most that always seem to get hurt but she is still right there when Derek needs her the most in more ways than one, and of course the love of her life is right there to help her out for better or worse.

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading this series and one of the things I really like about it compared to other open ended urban fantasy is that this series does have what appears to be an ultimate goal in the end even though it is not the main plot for each book. The character development has been enjoyable seeing her move from the self-survival at all costs attitude to one where she allows others to become a part of her life. It is also nice to see in this book, the stronger tie ins to the overall plot of the series dealing with her heritage.

Ilona Andrews continues her Kate Daniels series in this tale that at last explains Kate's personal history and why she is so driven. Andrews has the gift of telling an exciting stand alone story that builds the characters she has introduced earlier. There are glimpses of wry humour amongst the violence of the gladatorial combat this story centres around; in particular the picture she draws of the way that one of the secondary male characters courts his chosen love is funny and amazing. Read this for fun and for the satisfaction that good writing with strongly drawn characters and a great story brings. Read the series. Andrews is one of the outstanding writers in this genre.

Was a great book. LOL I was laughing and finding myself upset at other parts. There are great quotes and funny concepts. Kates friend Derek is hurt so bad that he may not make it. The only way to figure out who and get revenge is to enter the midnight games and fight to the death. Great story right amount of romance and can't get enough blood.

3rd book in the Kate Daniels series, set in "Post-Shift" Atlanta - I love the banter between characters, the world-building, and the way the Big Fight keeps inching closer. Reminds me of Jim Butcher in a number of ways.

I'd had the previous books in my to read list for a very long time and finally got around to reading them last week in anticipation of this coming out. I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed the first two and this one has become my favorite. The book was just right for a nice break in the middle of a very long week.

If I had to pick one thing about this book (and the series in general) that I like the most it would be the pacing. So many times you see sequels that drag the story on and feel like fluff. This is not the case here. There was just the right level of progression in both major plots I was interested in (Roland and Curran). I felt there was a good amount of movement while still keeping enough back to look forward to future books. Anything else would have felt too slow or too rushed.

I also really enjoyed the character development in the book. It was a nice balance to the action/plot progression. While a good chunk of the character development was insight into Kate, the other characters had some great development as well. I appreciated how the development of these characters didn't overwhelm Kate but added to the entire picture we get of her.

This book had the perfect balance of all the elements I was looking for. The only thing lacking is that I don't have the next book yet!

Kate Daniels has created a world that is very unique. This series is a must read for individuals that love the urban fantasy genre. I was hooked after teh first chapter of book one and each book kept getting better and better. Magic Strikes is definitely the best so far and I sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next installment. The characters she has created are impossible not to connect with and become attached too.

I absolutely love this series and it just keeps getting better with each book! Everyone has already summarized this so well that I won't bother. I'll just say that Kate is a character you get completely wrapped up in. She has depth, flaws and an incredible sense of honor and as her past is slowly uncovered throughout the series you only get more invested in her. Andrea as Kate's friend and Kate's new niece are a great addition. Loved the school scene! Her relationship with Curran has grown amazingly and I can't wait to see what happens next. Incredibly well written, fast moving plot and great heroes, villains and everything in between.

This series is sooooooo good. Each book is better than the last. I absolutely love Kate. The interactions between her and Curran (swoon) are amazing and I find myself racing through the books to get to these parts. All the characters are interesting and so funny - I often laugh out loud when reading this series. Recommend reading these for sure.

I have read four of this series and found them to be repetitious. Just about every chapter has a knock down drag out fight with numerous body parts strewing the neighborhood. The heroine bounces back from each fight with renewed zeal for the next confrontation. (When there is no fight there is a bedroom scene.) Why did I read all four? I had checked them out of the library on my kindle at one time.

I loved, loved, LOVED this book. The whole series has been thoroughly enjoyable to read but this one was the best. I writing this to help you choose another series to start. =O) Start with book one and go from there. I ended up reading book two first, then book one and did not feel lost...it explained alot, though! When I saw this one in the store, I grabbed it up and read it immediately. You will not be disappoointed and it brings more of her childhood and legacy to light. Grab it right now and enjoy the read!

This is the best Kate Daniels yet. There are few books that I will keep and read again, this is one of them. This series is full of great plots and character development. There is romantic tension, but it doesn't overwhelm the book. All in all, one of my favorite series.

This is one of my favorite series. If possible, this last book was even better than the first two. Ilona Andrews takes the time and effort to fully develop her main character. Kate has a detailed and intriguing past that the author describes only gradually. This book was stuffed full of action but with just the right amount of romance. It's going to be torture waiting for the next book.

I love these books. And recently I've been getting into audio books. The one thing that makes a good audio book is an excellent reader. This reader is... okay. Mostly she does a good job, but really it's not as good as it could be. The voices should sound like the characters' personalities, and there are different ways to do that. Davina Porter is the best I've ever heard and makes the others seem 2nd string. Alan Cummings is a close second. All narrators need to really know their books to come across well.

In this book Curran's, Jim's and later Derek's voices all sound the same. Dali's voice, is awful; not at all what she should be and keeps distracting me. (Yes, this is personal opinion, but her character is Indonesian-American. She's probably not going to sound like she's just off the boat; hesitant and stiff.)

Started with this book (book 3) in the series, and enjoyed it. Will now try to read the others.
The nice part (as others have said), is that this book seems complete by itself. There is no need to read in order, to get the context.

Typically I like the first few books in a series and then they start to go down hill. I liked Magic Bites, really liked Magic Burns and loved this book. It has a great balance of plot/character and the action scenes are gripping without being gory. Can't wait for the next book.

Quickly and simply, I love the way they write. I have developed a relationship with the characters, laugh at the quips, and still think about the world when the book is finished. For merely printed words, I would say they have done their job well as writers. My only problem is they write too slow!

I should absolutely start this review by saying that I don't like fantasy. It is not my genre, and I was trying it out again just for kicks. Unfortunately, after reading Magic Strikes I still don't like it. Perhaps, I like it even less.

My main problem with the entire fantasy genre is all the the made up stuff. I find fantastical creatures obnoxious, and at one point in Magic Strikes I was introduced to a werehynea, a lupe, and some crazy Hindu god. It was all too much. That being said, I did like Magic Strikes when the fantasy elements were not involved in the story. When Curran and Kate were simply talking, interacting, and pretending not to like each other I liked the story. I got it. That stuff makes sense to me. But then, just as quickly as I was taken in, I was drawn back out. The Pack (werewolves) reappeared and everything went back to being strange. Strange in a way that was not transporting me. Just strange as in: where do people think of this stuff?

My final complaint about the book has nothing to do with the genre (although I never really saw past it). I found the writing of the novel to be lacking. In fact, the style of the novel reminded me of the Sookie Stackhouse books-ones I enjoy, but not the best literature. Just like Sookie, Kate is a tougher than she looks protagionist who is loved by all these crazy creatures. She'll kick some ass if she has to, but most of the time she speaks like a bad movie trailer. Here is one example:

"A man leapt over the row of cars and landed in front of us in a crouch, blocking the way. Dark hair dripped from his head. He glanced up. His eyes glowed like two red-hot coals. His mouth opened. An unnaturally long tongue spilled out, lashing the air. His lips drew back, showing rows of curved fangs...Alrighty then."

There are so many reasons why this book just wasn't for me. Maybe it's that I don't get the lingo. I don't know what a loup is. I have never heard of Lyc-V as a virus. Or maybe it's because I don't like war books (or action books for that matter), and this one had a lot of both. Nevertheless, reading Magic Strikes was an experiment into how far I could take my vampire love. Well, I guess I wasn't ready to jump right in. I just didn't love it.
Please RateBook 3, Magic Strikes: Kate Daniels
