The death rituals of another culture can be mysterious, odd, or downright strange to us but that doesn't mean they aren't beautiful or moving. We are all bound by death and grief - it is interesting to see how many different ways love, remembrance, and memorial can be expressed.

I couldn't put this book down (started and finished it one day). Caitlin Doughty has a gift-- to introduce death to an uncomfortable audience-- and she does it so well, by the end of the book I was having conversations about how different places and cultures handle death. Doughty writes in a conversational tone, at times, but make no mistake: her book is well researched by both her first-hand experiences, as well as more traditional, secondary sources. In addition to the written portion of this book, I found the illustrations a wonderful addition. Somehow, the artist managed to convey what Doughty was writing about, in both a respectful and delightful way.

I'm so glad I purchased this book in hardcopy-- I can't wait to lend it out. Highly recommend to anyone.

Great stories and lovely writing style! I went through this book in a day and didn’t want to put it down. I ordered it a chapter before I finished Smoke Gets In Your Eyes And it was totally worth it. I’ve followed Caitlin’s YouTube channel for a few months now and decided to give her books a try, and they’ve definitely become must reads for the death-curious.

Got the audiobook too, love the way she reads, but when I opened my kindle version I saw that there were illustrations which was so cool! Great book. Entertaining, and my home state was the first chapter! Loved the book and would recommend to everyone. I learned so much about other countries. It also gave me some cool ideas of bucket list museums.

After my initial distraction in the first chapter of a woman playing a didgeridoo at the open pyre cremation in Colorado (very culturally inappropriate! Only men play them - take note Americans) I enjoyed the book immensely! Bonus beautiful illustrations by Landis Blair adorn the pages.

Wonderfully written. A captivating story about death. If you like weird random death facts, I would read this book. It was very interesting to hear how other cultures celebrate and mourn thier loved ones.

Learn something about which you might be a bit apprehensive. Caitlin Doughty recounts her own investigative travels in an engaging, sympathetic narrative about the ways peoples around the world tend to their dead. Immersive read.

Well crafted essays creating a travelogue of death. Ms. Doughty's charming personality and writing skills shine through the dismal trade. Her take on mortality and international practices regarding death offer a fascinating glimpse of all of our destinies. She reveals our shared beliefs along with the contrasts from culture to culture. I longed for a better summation and a bit more breadth of her important ideas and travels. She is definitely unique. She has an important voice not heard since Jessica Mitford's seminal work in "The American Way of Death." Her writing and career are essential as we find a more rational way to remember our dead. Plus she is very amusing. It's like whistling in the graveyard.

Truly loved and appreciated this book. Caitlin has a great writing voice that has me laughing out loud at times but also gains my trust. I want to put more time into thinking about ritual and meaning because of this book. Thank you!

Such a wonderful insight in the diverse funeral practices around the world. I love Ms. Doughty's wit and dry sense of morbid humor but also her sense of cultural awareness. I'm just dying to read her next book!
