One of the few books I would considered giving an encore read. Tad R. Callister does a terrific job at making plain otherwise confusing views of the Atonement. More importantly, he shows how the Atonement applies to the life of the reader. Obviously, I would recommend it.

Outside of the scriptures, this is probably the best book I've ever read. I have reread it several times. It has a strong scriptural background, and each time I read it I learn something new. It helps me to know, love, and appreciate my Savior more.

there's no doubt that this book is well researched, every point is well established, and he seems to cover every angle of understanding the atonement with what we know about it.and while there were several brand new ideas for me here, I suppose my goal was greater than that. Elder Callister shares his feelings on his gratitude for the atonement, for Jesus' continued mercy, etc as the understanding that.gives his existence purpose, depth, and joy. I wish he could have shared more WHY he feels that way or HOW he came to feel what he does. I'm still stuck on the idea that the atonement wasn't generous; it was a necessity of fulfilling God's plan to exalt his children. there was no other way to send his children to a world drenched in sin so they could learn for themselves while still being eligible to be completely cleansed and return to God's presence wiser and stronger. does an infant thank its mother for milk or a clean fiaper? the mother created the child, so why would she not have a plan to take care of it? if the atonement is the parachute on the skydiver's back, then it certainly makes sense the skydiver would be grateful for it when it deploys. However, if he had no parachute, he wouldn't have gotten into the plane or jumped out of it! It is a necessary piece of the whole deal. we might as well thank God for putting this all in place for our progression, but we can't easily thank him for that because we do not remember what we were, and we can't fathom what being like Him is like. so what do we say? he is the chessmaster, we are the pawns.

I heard this book quoted from during many lessons, testimonies, and talks. I decided I needed to read it for myself. I started the book at a time of redirection and focus in my life, not from my own choices but because of life circumstances. The words and my subsequent thoughts brought me peace and further understanding regarding my purpose in life and my debt to my Savior that died for me. This is a book to be read slowly with a contemplative spirit.

My wife and I are reading this together and really enjoy the insight and spirit. She has the hardback and I the Kindle version. The only difference is that the Kindle version does not have the pictures.

Our son recommended this book for his fiancee`. He owns it already as do I, therefore we know the power of this book. If you want to know the Savior, and you want to truly understand his greatest gift to us, read this book along with your scriptures. I suggest you have a prayer before you read and then ponder afterwards. That is why we are here, afterall.:)
