Kind of choppy. Which made it difficult to follow the story line. When going back and forth in the story timeline I wish it was more clear one is doing so. The books are harder to go from chapter to chapter purchased all together on kindle. I found this out when all I wanted to do is go back in the book ,as I was lost about the storyline and was desperate to figure out if I somehow missed something. Then after a lot of work I realized the information had not been information that was disclosed yet , oh well. The idea was nice. I was hoping it would fill in some holes from the tv show that is based off the books. There are some differences.

Very riveting. Take your typical contemporary fantasy novel. Put it through a blender and serve it nicely and neatly. A pleasure to read and a nice diversion from the really dark and political fantasy that currently populates the trend. Not to say that there aren't dark moments, but the balance of levity is something that makes it more humanitarian and down to earth compared to the high epic you get in other novels in the genre.

Quentin read the Fillory and Further books at a young age and never stopped believing in them. He knew Fillory was a real place. He also finds out that magic is real. He attends Brakebills to get his education in magic.

The books are quests revolving around Fillory. He has a great set of friends that go on adventures with him.

The books were in third person. The editing was good. The television show is NOTHING like the books. It's almost a completely different story. The show is good too.
The Magician's Diary (Glass and Steele Book 4) :: The Riftwar Saga, Book 2 - Riftwar Cycle :: The Magicians Trilogy Box Set by Lev Grossman (9-Jun-2015) Paperback :: The Blind Assassin :: The Day of Atonement: A Novel (Benjamin Weaver)

This series had vast potential! Intriguing characters that start well, but then fall flat. It's almost like the author was trying to come up with the absolute minimum he could write to produce a novel that would sell. Book 1 is fair, book 2 is ridiculously short, and book 3 is a chore to read. Can't recommend.

Having watched the first season of the TV show, I was intrigued. The author explored a number of intriguing themes, and there are a number of interesting views on what could be the source of 'magic'. At times the concepts were broad and sweeping and fascinating. The characters are generally interesting, but at times seem to become bogged down in self-indulgence. That is related to one of the themes being explored, but at times it drags the story down. If things had not bogged down at times I would have rated this as 4 stars.

My husband requested this for Christmas (we exchange wish lists because we hate wasting money on items we don't really want) and he is happily surprised by how much he is enjoying these books. I haven't read them, but I must say, their covers are gorgeous.

Overall a very good trilogy. It wanders in some areas and doesn't have a totally cohesive feel. Perhaps Lev Grossman is planning on expanding the series, and tying up loose ends? Overall I enjoy the books.

Bought this for vacation reading and for that it served the purpose. It's not going to be classified as great literature, but that's not the point for a vacation read. By the third volume the characters had gone a little flat and I was actually glad to see an end to the story. If Grossman tries to stretch this to a tetralogy, I cannot imagine wanting to go there. One annoyance was references to other wizard based books and movies. I don't know why I found it annoying but more than one was quite enough. Perhaps it was the reminder that the other books that I was not reading are better. I'll probably re-read the trilogy in a few years and change my mind. Then again, I can probably wait until they come out as "major motion pictures" and then wait for them to be streamed for free on the store or Netflix. Perhaps the scripts will improve on the novel?

Do you still remember when as a teenager, you read a book, and it lingered for days and stayed with you, until just short of forever? How often does that happen when you’re all grown up and caught in the have-to-do’s and hassles? Not often, but for me, the Magicians was one of those that managed that: whoosh, off your feet. Awesome!

I read this trilogy on kindle and upon finishing, I bought the hardbacks. It's a pretty good story, one that I'm sure I'll revisit someday. I know it's been said numerous times in reviews that The Magicians is Harry Potter; the college years. I think that statement is pretty close to the truth in that the books are about students learning magic in a secret magical university. But the similarities end there. The books are fast moving and the stakes are much higher. The magical world that Grossman builds in this fantasy is interwoven into our present day existence. What's unique is that he also builds a fantasy world with-in his fantasy. It's very clever and well written.

The books are probably not suitable for kids, but YA readers and fantasy loving adults will really enjoy them. SyFy's TV version is pretty good, but time is a luxury TV writers don't have and so far the show seems rushed. That's not a criticism, but don't think that you can follow the TV show along with the books. The two versions deviate at the beginning and only intersect at random points going forward. I can only imagine how difficult it is to bring this product to TV. Regardless, read the books!

I am currently one the second book of the trilogy and like it is much better than the first. The first book felt like a rough draft of story. The story is really what kept me going and untill the end of the first book, it was hard to keep reading.

The cost of these books purchased separately is only $19.65 combined as of this review. The set has cards, wnich to a kindle reader mean very little. The publisher needs to use their brain, and give the collection a competitive price.

These books are related to the Harry Potter series only in the sense that they are both about magic, but the resemblance ends there. These books are for adults or young adults. There are things such as sexual scenes that I would not recommend for children. There is very graphic violence. The magic is extremely involved and difficult to master, no chanting a phrase in Latin and then voila! If it is not completed exactly right disaster can and does ensue.

I tried watching the television series after I first bought the kindle edition but had not yet begun to read them, and I thought it was terrible. Too confusing and not enough background. I let the books sit for a long time and recently began to read them. I was immediately entranced. I bought the actual books for my 24-year-old grandson. I believe he will enjoy them.

Highly recommended, but not for young children, because of explicit sex, rape, and graphic violence.
