So glad that Nick finally got around to continuing this mental story.... What a gas!

The perfect end of the world as we know it take. Blocking off the neighborhood streets to make a modern day fortification and make your STAND against the zombie apocalypse!

Let's admit that it's something many of us have played with in our daydreaming/ on sleepless nights (well me, as I live in a medieval quarter with narrow streets,..... Anyway, sorry about that).

Being Apocalypse Weird, let's add in a special needs super hero into the mix?

Continuing where we left off, Nick Cole has our handful of survivors begin to plan for a way to live past the current day. However, the story takes a detour when a special needs kid (well, young adult) is found by one of the group. This book is really his story in those first days (weeks) of the apocalypse. With his trusty mask of Batman, he somehow manages to follow those words his father passed along to him on how he is supposed to interact with the rest of the world. And even when he doesn't understand anything else, he stays true to that. And when that fails he stays true to Batman.

If you have any interest in the Weird series, this one threatens to deliver a new character to tug at your heart.

I finished this book yesterday and already can't wait for the next installment!! This book picks up where The Red King left off, and continues the story of that band of survivors wonderfully. Then it takes you on a ride that you never saw coming as it follows "Batman" through his adventures. I couldn't put it down, and finished it within a day!! I highly recommend it!!

The Dark Knight is an excellent sequel to The Red King. It pushes the story of the survivors in Orange County and their castle construction forward while giving us a glimpse of an alternate Orange County. Is it where Ash came from? We meet some survivors trying to keep the human race alive against an uprising of self aware computers. We also meet Cory, The Dark Knight, who just want to find his daddy. What the heck is going on with the fog? Just how many apocalypse's are there? Nick Cole brings more to the Apocolypse Weird story while building great characters. I can't wait for the episode.

This story was simply fantastic. I'll admit to being a bit confused when it suddenly shifted gears in the middle, but then a short time later it all came together beautifully and also connected to other stories in the Apocalypse Weird world. A job well done and I can't wait for the next story!!

Yet another great piece from the author of The Red King. I haven't read a series this great in a really long time. Don't be fooled by the pulp sheen. This is great, original world building, and Nick Cole's work has been my favorite thus far. Joss Whedon would be proud. Speaking of... has anyone contacted him to write for Apocalypse Weird?

A fantastic, gut-wrenching read. Moves in strange ways, and totally immerses you in the world that Nick has created. The story takes some hard left-hand turns at times, but it all makes sense shortly thereafter and you're left wanting more. I can't wait to see what happens to Cory next!

Wow - this book had a huge twist with introduction of Cory - I really liked how this thread was woven into the overall story and the time travel (?) element that it introduced. Also, the story as told from Cory's perspective was very enlightening. Can't wait for the next book.

Feels kind of slow compared to the previous book (The Red King) as this one is mainly about just one character (and not a very interesting one). There are good parts still and even though you get bored from time to time with the character, the book manages to keep you reading.
It's more like an intermission in the main story, but a good one.
You'll find interesting surprises in this book as well, so go for it.

The Dark Knight introduces a new spin and character to the Southern California thread of the Apocalypse Weird universe. I truly enjoyed how the current pop culture apocalyptic folk lore is weaving its way into influencing the survivors of Apocalypse weird. I am very intrigued to see where this will lead us.

The Dark Knight picks up where The Red King leaves off. You go deeper into into the stories of characters from The Red King as well as the introduction of a new character! I'm looking forward to the next book from Nick Cole.

Nick Cole in his second novel of the Apocalypse Weird series, The Dark Knight embraces convention and kicks it squarely in the face at the same time. He blends at least three genres. The first is zombies: A virus turns much of the population into coughing sickos who then become ravenous for human flesh. A small group of unlikely survivors band together in a condo complex and face their fears and personal demons while realizing the rest of society is falling apart. Meanwhile, Cole tosses in a bit of military thriller as he introduces a group of soldiers who try to pull things together despite horrific odds. This second novel touches briefly on the military angle but focuses more closely on the condo folks who continue to prepare for the shambling dead. They secure their compound and further establish the hierarchy of their new compact society. I read through this quickly. Cole's got something coming, and I wanted to know what he had in store. He's very familiar with formula, but I get the impression he prefers to mess with it. Then it happens. We are introduced to Batman. He's really an autistic kid named Cory with such a touching backstory that when I was immersed in reading it I didn't care about the other plot threads in the novel. Cory's dad is a cop. He raised Cory to be strong, or as strong as a kid who thinks everybody's nice even when they're beating on him in the playground. Cory's mom left. She couldn't handle the responsibility. Turns out Cory loves Batman. And Batman gives him confidence. He's internalized the phrase from the cartoon, "I am vengeance. I am the night. I am Batman." This part of the book is tremendous. Cole's handling of the character shows a tenderness and understanding that I've never encountered. Not that I've read much with autistic protagonists. Cole takes off into another twist, thus giving readers their money's worth for the weird in the title. But I was into it. Cory is an interesting character, and I can picture everything Cole, who says he's a working actor, writes. He doesn't waste words. His prose reveals a gritty landscape and grittier bad guys. But he also pumps a lot of life into his story. This is his best yet.
