I absolutely loved "What Is the What" by Dave Eggers. It only took me a good 3 years to get around to finally reading it but I'm so glad that I did! I have always been interested on the topic of the Lost Boys of Sudan and have heard lots about them. The writing style of this book is one of the numerous things that makes it outstanding. It is written from Achek's point of view from America but looks back on his past and how he got there. While reading about his journey and all of the hardships he made it through, you almost completely forget that he's tied up and gagged on his floor, or waiting in a hospital room chair. I would highly recommend this book to everyone. It really gives you a perspective of how lucky you are and what's really important in life.

This book is so moving. Dave Eggers tells a story that everyone needs to read. I have to admit that I was ignorant about what was happening in Sudan. I would like to think I am informed about the world, but sadly I am not. People do not hear about these autrocities by watching the evening news or cable news. All we are fed is the latest gossip about the current drunk and drugged up startlet. After ready this book i have made a point to become more informed and I found websites that carry actual news. I have given this book to everyone I know. it is very powerful. I wish more people would read it.

When I first heard about Eggers' new novel, I honestly wasn't interested in the subject. I thought, how could I relate to problems a world apart in Africa, and to a man whose life seems completely depressing? However, after starting the book I quickly realized that yes! I could relate and what a terrible person am I for casting such a book aside? How ignorant! It would be a stretch to say the book opened my mind to the world and its happenings, but I must confess that honestly this book, in some, possibly small way, will change you. And come on, it's Dave Eggers. What was I thinking?

What a powerful, awe inspiring book. What is the What was chosen as a book club read a few months back and I still can't stop talking about it with everyone. This book really puts your life into perspective and sheds some serious light on the true meaning of perserverance.

I learned a lot from this first person account of the situation in the Sudan, however I didn't enjoy all aspects of the story. I wasn't interested in the information he relayed about his experience in the states. I think this could have been written differently so as to really grab the reader. We read this for book club, and everyone agreed it was a good story, but it wasn't great. It gave us a decent amount to discuss, but the discussion did turn political as it typical for us.

Excellent book. The story is so strong and well written that I wish the book would continue on forever. I wish we could be given continuous updates on Achak's life because we cherished his story so much. I think the last book that had such a moving story was the Kite Runner. I recommended this book to all of my friends, and they loved it too.

I loved Dave Egger's A Hearbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and have read it several times (But skip the annoying Forward).

I bought What is the What based on the sterling review in the New York Times. I had not sought out information on the Lost Boys from the Sudan and didn't think I would find this book so interesting. But it held me from beginning to end. Dave Eggers is a brilliant writer. Thanks Dave for educating me and for making the subject so fascinating and moving. And, like Heartbreaking, touching me so personally at the end.

This is a beautifully written book on an important subject that still remains in the news many years after the events recorded. This is a must read for anyone interested in keeping up with world affairs and the inability of the UN to bring peace to Africa.

A wonderful read, confronting, amusing, cross cultural. Dave Eggers has done well to render what happened in a world where this should never occur, yet, we let it happen. I found it humbleing, the strength of character shown by a disadvantaged young man in an uncaring world

The book was recommended by a Bible study leader and it did not disappoint. I learned so much regarding the past and current situation in Sudan (not necessarily the point of the book) that I am now embarrased about my previous ignorance. This book changed the way I look at the world. I highly recommend it!
