For several years Lackey has been in a literary slump; regurgitating old lines and story threads in her works, believing that readers wouldn't notice. We did. With the Hunter series, however, she turned a corner. Her writing took on a new life, with fresh ideas and interesting characters. The first two books were a rebirth of the old Lackey readers loved, but unfortunately Apex does not live up to its name. With this final tome of the series, Lackey reverted to her new norm: the book was rushed, tired, and fails to make the reader feel anything but angry that they actually spent money for it. In short, it was spectacularly underwhelming. It's a shame that this once brilliant author has fallen so far.

Mercedes Lackey did it again! Is there a fourth one in this series? Cause this is a kick b_____, action packed, can't put it down series. Keep them coming Mercedes, (I've loved all of your books since 1970).

Lackey has sometimes had problems with third books of a series, big buildup, no good way to resolve it, so poof everything is miraculously fixed in the last few pages. I was also disappointed to learn that the entire book series was a liberal political tract.
Book One of the Collegium Chronicles - A Valdemar Novel :: Book Two of the Collegium Chronicles (A Valdemar Novel) :: Book One of the Dragon Prophecy - Crown of Vengeance :: Book One (The Obsidian Mountain Trilogy) - The Obsidian Trilogy :: A Fantasy Retelling of a Greek Mythology Romance (A Tale of the Five Hundred Kingdoms)

Building on the previous two stories, Apex is a very satisfying sequel, not falling into the typical problem of a story that's lost its gusto and petered out. Instead, the characters are more fully fleshed out and face a different host of problems that truly keeps you guessing as to if or how it will all work out.
Surprises around every corner help make this a 5 star book, one I was happy to share with my two teenage daughters.

I could hardly put down Apex. All the problems that had come together in the first two of the series basically resolved in this final of the Trilogy. Joy finally had a real voice, was believable and had some very interesting turn of events. I loved the Lavendar finish, and the foes and defender’s trials. It felt way more like Lackey than her more recent “phone it in” attempts. I wish there were more coming in this series as I can think of so many places Lackey could go with this world, the diseray, the Hunters and Hounds, and the otherworlders.

I absolutely loved this entire series. I only wish I knew when or if a next book or series was coming. Its aggravating not knowing weather or not a series that you love will continue or not. If there is anyone in the know out there comment on my (review)???

This trilogy is rich in background, action and story line. Although this is supposed to be the finale, it does leave some questions unanswered which I truly hope will form the basis of another book. I really would like to see more of Hunter Joy, her Hounds, and all her friends and cohorts in their continued defense of the city they call home.

I loved how Mercedes wrote herself into the story in order to sound the alarm about climate change.
Which is very appropriate given that this world is an Earth in the future. Long after the apocalypse aka the Diseray.

A great refreshing series! I love the world lackey has built and the hounds were amazing especially bya! Joy was a good strong female character who I grew to love it's a action filled book about being a hunter in the future dealing with creatures from the other side it has magic too I don't want to spoil much but was so sad when blank dies and how heartbroken joy was. I liked Josh at the end I wasn't a fan of his till this book but him and joy are good together after all. This book was my favorite in the series loved when all the hounds came together and the folk mage the good one that is. Kent was a good role model and boss for joy and all the hunters the ending left me thinking it was a little open ended but all in all great!

I have loved Mercedes Lackey since I read her first book years ago.
The Hunter series transports you into a world of magic and intrigue. Her characters soon become as family!
Another star in her cap, she should have a constellation by now! ?
