An incredible historical novel - I couldn't put it down! The historical backdrop of the Spanish Civil War and World War II, coupled with an exotic location, such as Morocco, then the suspense and a dab of romance made this quite an interesting read. Loved it!

A novel about the Spanish civil war is unusual. This first person account deals with the critical issues that faced the Spanish people during those troubled times. This is a crackerjack novel that is WELL worth reading.

The story line is catching, however, I do not care for stories that take 3 pages to describe an item, emotion, or a building. This book could have been successfully written in under 300 pages, not 625.

This book was actually based on factual information. It is a compelling story in which I had a hard time to put down. It has a lot of history in which I had forgotten I knew, what a refreshing book to actually learn some of the history and mystery that went on during the war.

I thought this was a great read. Enough action to keep me involved and interesting as we had just traveled to the South of Spain and Tangiers so some mentions of areas we are familiar with. Also the political side of the story has a bitmore than a little similarity to present day world.

Historical fiction tells about Spain's activities during the 1930s, a period of time about which I knew little. I recommend this novel to anyone like me who loves getting caught up in a story with both real and imaginary characters, a storyline with a strong woman living in a time of fragile women, life in war-torn Madrid and exotic Morocco, with a little Portugese hustle-bustle thrown in, too, and spies who can afford to trust no one. Stitching taken to a whole new level.

Entrancing character development, a plot that is hardly predictable, with real historical characters interwoven and accurately portrayed. The only downside is that the reader is inevitably going to lose some sleep because it is hard to put down.

The author has a gift for writing smooth narrative. In some ways, this novel feels like Danielle Steel on steroids. My book club is reading this book, some loved it; I thought is needed editing- way too long, over-abundance of details. Im sure it worked better as a serialized telanovella.

An excellent read!! It kept me wanting to read on and was difficult to put down! It was interesting to read about Spain and Morocco during the time of the Spanish Civil War and the beginning of World War II. It was a beautifully written book combining intrigue, mystery, history, dedication and love. I would highly recommend it as a must read book!

Brilliantly written story that captures the reader from first to the last page! Fast moving and lots of historical background which is intriguing with the action of the characters the author creates. I would reread this again and again but also recommend it to others to read. Charlotte

I really liked the story, and the characters were well drawn. However, there was lots of history that for me offered more details than I needed or wanted. All and all, the novel was an enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a little confusing because I did not know anything about Spain's history. I did a little research so the book became more interesting. I loved that it was based on real characters but I think it was a fascinating exciting story even if you ignored the history part.

Normally, I prefer novels that are more dialogue driven than ones that contain paragraph after paragraph of description. This novel, however, engaged me in descriptive sections that were interesting, informative, and flowed with truly magical prose. Needless to say, I loved the book and look forward to the author's next one.

The improbable plot and unsympathetic female protagonist kept me from finishing the novel. I kept thinking it would get better, and maybe it does beyond where I stopped, but I didn't care enough to find out.

The most interesting parts were the historical facts and settings pre- and during WWII in Spain and Morocco. The story is a bit Hollywoodish - beautiful young talented woman suffers then thrives, with a predictable ending..

I absolutely loved this book! I immediately clicked with Sira. I loved her & I rooted for her and worried for her through out the story. Very well written. I could envision every city Sira visited and every place lived, I felt every betrayal and yearning she felt.
Five stars for sure!

Interesting story as far as the author took it. Also, Ms. Duenas' writing style lacks sophistication. The descriptions of Morocco were the most evocative parts of the book. Not great but fairly enjoyable.

A very enjoyable story about a young girl who grows and matures to the point where she can make a contribution to the world. The lead character is not perfect, but she finds her strength in the middle of some difficult times. By the end of the book, she has become a strong woman fighting for what she believes.
