Jacob is an Enforcer, in charge of punishing rogue demons that attempt to break their ancient laws that keep humans safe. On one of his pursuits he encounters Isabella, a human that drops into his path. Despite the laws of his kind his attraction lures him to defy all he holds dear in order to have the one human that sets his body on fire.
Isabella is intrigued by the new world Jacob reveals but she soon finds out she means more to their race than anyone could imagine. As Jacob and Isabella journey towards the discovery of an ancient prophecy their lust continues to spark, until finally neither one can deny the craving for each other.
***This author has created an interesting world with demons and humans coexisting. Jacob was sweet and domineering, the perfect other half to Isabella, who is stubborn and feisty. The secondary characters help bring this story to light and will lead to interesting stories of their own. I found the author would jump from character perspectives sparadically which left a little confusion but it was not a huge enough deal to alter my overall rating. I typically like more detailed erotica in my novels but I do recommend this book for paranormal romance fans, I will be checking out the next book in this series.

Get through the first chapter or two & you'll be hooked until the end.
It was refreshing to read a paranormal romance with characters who were just a little different. These aren't vampires or shifters or weres, these are Demons.
And the Demons are not bad guys! They are not typical 'horned & hoofed' boogie men from Hell. Instead they are in tune with the elements, Fire, Air, Water, Earth, and have powers which align with each Demon's specific element.
I think the cover makes this look much more of an 'erotic' read than it really is. Yes, there are few sex scenes, but they are not overly blatant or kinky. In fact, the Earth Demon Jacob, has a little trouble controlling his ability to 'move the earth' (literally) during sex which leads a bad guy to them so she even gave it, the sex scene, dual purpose.
I only gave it 4 stars because you have to blow me away to earn a 5, but I was drawn in enough that I am impatient to read the next installment, Gideon. We got a good glimpse of him in Jacob - just enough to tease & entice.
If you enjoy paranormal romance, I recommend giving it a read.

Overall, I thought this one was an excellent read! Yes, it has some of the exact same elements as most other "Immortal" themed books: Immortal guy who's race is in danger of turning to the "dark side" meets mortal woman who is his "true mate / life mate / destined mate" and the key to saving his race from destruction. It's a plot that's been used to death. However, I think Jacquelyn Frank has made this book just different enough to rise above that "tired old immortal plot" stigma for me, and those differences made this book interesting to read.
I do have to agree with a previous reviewer that while I like Isabella's spunk, I did kind of get tired of her eye-rolling rudeness after awhile. I've never quite been able to accept how authors will take a character who's supposed to be this virginal wallflower and within a few days make them cocky, tough-talking warriors. Frank attempts to explain this by talking about how Isabella's core DNA started to change as soon as she met Jacob, but I'm just not sure that her whole personality would change so quick.
Also...and this is a very minor critique...I'm not sure if the author realized this, but by the middle of the book, whenever Isabella would talk she would say Jacob's name every time, and sometimes more than once. Even if she was talking directly to him, it was Jacob, Jacob, Jacob over and over and over. It started to get distracting after awhile. Jacob didn't seem to say Isabella's name every time he spoke, so I'm not sure why Isabella had to say Jacob this and Jacob that every time she spoke.
But again, that was a minor irritant in an otherwise very well written book that rises above many other paranormal books I have read. I will definitely be buying the next in the series.

This story is your typical paranormal romance-showing the journey of one extraordinary couple from the time they meet to the point where they realize their destiny together after overcoming certain obstacles, both conventional and supernatural. Jacob is a Demon who commands the element earth. He also serves as the Enforcer for his species, a kind of judge and jury combo to keep everyone inline. The story kicks off when he discovers Isabella, his Druid mate, who has no idea that she is anything other then human. For Demons, there is an apparent law against mating with humans and as such, there romance is initially forbidden and therefor suitably intriguing.
Overall I found the book to be entertaining. Jacquelyn Frank does some very different and interesting things with the world she has created-giving us not only demons and magic, but also endless possibilities of shape-shifters, vampires, and soul mates. For this reason I believe the series could appeal to even the more jaded paranormal romance readers. The reason that this lost a star for me is mainly stylistic-at times the wording is flowery and sentence and paragraph structure are verbose and repetitive. It does not detract hugely from the affect of the story.

For all paranormal fans I am just going to say that you are going to be amazed by this unbelievable and most fantastic by new comer Jacqueline Frank. You are going to be blown away by this marvelous and refreshingly different new series. Written with amazing dialogue, edge of your seat pace, awesome plot and a simmering hot sensuality, this is a gorgeous and very soulful paranormal novel.
Jacqueline Frank has created the perfect platform that catapults this captivating race of demons - the Nightwalkers into instant stardom!!
All Nightwalkers are immortal demons - and they are forsworn not to intermingle with humans. Each demon has unique characteristics they embrace - Jacob is an earth demon and has control of all to do with Mother Earth. Above all Jacob is the Enforcer of his people and for centuries - he has enforced the Law; that no demon during the Solstice, Beltane or Hallows Eve - succumbs to the turning and in turn harm any human.
While he is hunting a transformed demon in NYC, he meets Isabella. Unbeknown to both Isabella and Jacob, "Bella" has an inherent ability to track transformed demons and kill them. When she saves Jacob and herself - Jacob feels he has to take Bella to their world and present the situation to the Demon King, Saul and the counsel.
Frank has done a spectacular job at rendering the setting for this dramatic and heartfelt debut - creating a new and an original race of immortals. The novel drew me in from the start with a such a beguiling sense that I couldn't think of anything else but finish the story!! Who would have thought that taking a demon race - and transforming it into such a believable concept has you believing that demons are almost people and not the evil characters always portrayed in the past??
You will fall in love with both characters. Bella utterly captivates the audience (and the Nightwalkers, I may say) with her spunky, sweet and charming personality. Her acceptance of the demon race, coupled with her intelligence, loyalty and funny quips makes her an anomaly in the normally staid and somber demon world.
Jacob - who has been immune to any human is intensely drawn to Bella - is almost consumed with his need for her. His care and devotion to her is touching and beautiful, his tortured soul at the knowledge that he is forsworn - above all as Enforcer - not to fall to the guile and desire he feels for Bella.
As the story unfolds the connection that both Bella and Jacob share is quite unique and one that I am sure you will enjoy discovering and will hurl this Nightwalker series into your automatic buy!
Additionally, Franks adds a fresh new twist to the mated beings, soul mate concept previously used so much in all paranormal novels.
With a fabulous introduction to the surprisingly real secondary characters introduced here, Frank gives enough of an enticing glimpse to make you pant in anticipation to each of their stories!!
I am just upset with myself that I didn't read it sooner - ENJOY!!

Jacob, the first in the Nightwalkers series, is an interesting take on paranormal romance and focuses on demons rather than vampires or lycanthropes. Jacob, the title character, is the Enforcer, a being sworn to uphold the laws of demonkind by ensuring that none of his people can do harm to humans. During the times of Samhain and Beltane, demons are especially susceptible to their desire for humans, and it is Jacob's job to snap them back in line and punish them for their wayward desires. Jacob takes his duty seriously, even going so far as to punish friends and family, and has never once contemplated falling from grace himself. That is, until he meets a beautiful human named Isabella who he finds himself immediately drawn to, and everything he knows about himself as a demon and as the Enforcer starts to fall by the wayside as his desire consumes him...
Isabella Russ is your average, ordinary human. She shares an apartment in the Bronx with her sister and works as a librarian. Still, Isabella has always felt like she was on the outside looking in, though she never had a reason for these feelings. When she sees a strange man walking down her street at night, her first instinct is that he must be crazy. She doesn't live in the best part of town and the way he's dressed he's bound to be robbed or worse. But then she finds herself attracted to him, and falling for him... HARD.
The Nightwalkers series is an interesting new paranormal world that I'm excited to explore. There are several different types of demons, and each has his own abilities. Jacob is an Earth demon, which means he has power over earth, gravity, and all things nature. His job as Enforcer is both a necessary evil, and a source of distaste for himself and other demons. Jacob's name is equivalent to that of the Boogeyman and the threat of the Enforcer is what keeps demon children in their beds at night. Isabella, on the other hand, is all-around average. Even though she eventually gains some powers and is supposed to help Jacob in his tasks, I never really felt much for her, and she was my least favorite character in the whole story. I'm much more interested to see what will happen to Gideon and Legna in book 2 as well as Elijah in book 3.

Nightwalkers, the races of the night who breathe the nighttime air best, live and feel refreshment in the shadows of the moonlight, and use the sun as a heavenly orb meant to be sleep by. The Nightwalker races include demons, vampires, lycanthropes, and many others. Demons are a race of elementals, immortal and gifted with nature oriented powers. They are a highly civilized species with a strict code of honor, morals, beliefs and laws. Jacob, the Enforcer, is a demon and the responsible party to uphold the ancient laws. The demons desire to peacefully coexist with humans, and protect them from whatever baser sides there are to their natures. Jacob has heard every excuse his people, the demons, give when the madness overtakes them and they fall prey to their lust for humans, but he always brings the trespassers to justice. He has always been immune to forbidden desires, uncontrollable hungers, and the curse of the moon, his control is total...until Isabella Russ fell into his arms.
Honestly, I am not sure about this series. I have only recently expanded my reading gene into the demon realm and this series made me think of other, "Lords of the Underworld by Gena Showalter, - it was also recommended by a friend at school that selects similar series to the ones I chose. I think this book was ok, but I found it a little difficult to get interested in, I am going to let the 2nd one in the series, Gideon, sit on the shelf awhile and come back to this series at a later date. The concept is great but I felt the characters lacked depth.
The books in the series.
Jacob (The Nightwalkers, Book 1)
Gideon (The Nightwalkers, Book 2)
Elijah (The Nightwalkers, Book 3)
Damien (The Nightwalkers, Book 4)
Noah (Nightwalkers, Book 5)

The introductory chapter was interesting enough, intriguing enough for me to keep reading. Yet, not far into the book the heroine comes across the hero by stargazing one night. Jacob, a enforcer of demons struggling with his own vises happens to be on the scent of a evil demon (thought they were all evil, but I guess just some) when he hears the heroines thoughts from her window sill 5 stories up; he starts talking with her - crazy - she thinks nothing of it and continues a conversation with a man across the street and 5 stories down with-out yelling and with-out questioning why they are able to talk at such distance. On top of all of that she leans out a little more on the window sill and slips, falling, of course he catches her. So begins a strange love story about a demon and women who can since evil and has some druid blood in her (that comes out later).
The writing is good, but the author tends to drone on, spending a considerable amount of the book reiterating the characters thoughts over in over again in each chapter. I found my self skimming though pages because the authors tendency to do this was so habitual. This is also one of those books that has so many paranormal characters its hard to keep track of all the different species. The erotica is very well written and some of the best I've read actually which made up for the droning. It was not a page turner, but it was okay enough to finish.

In a genre innundated already, Jacquelyn Frank's Nightwalkers series is like a breath of fresh air. Where demons are not quite what we've been taught, in fact alot of lore is turned on its head in this series all in a positive way. Our hero Jacob is an enforcer among his people, think of him as judge, jury and executioner, necessary but feared and shunned. Enter his perfect mate, except she is forbidden to him, it is association with her kind that he passes judgment on. Now he must pass judgement on himself. Except his perfect mate turns out to be an exception to the rule and necessary for the salvation of his people.
I loved both Jacob and Isabella's characters they were both well developed and enjoyable. Isabella brought out the best in Jacob and I like they way she embraced her newfound powers and all the things she learned, instead of running away from the unknown or denying what was going on she tried to understand and be a help instead of a hinderance. As female heroines go she is one of the better ones. I very much look forward to Gideon's story and the rest of this series.

Jacob is the first book in Jacqueline Franks, Nightwalker Series. The Nightwalkers are the dark races who live alongside humans without humans knowing about them...demons, vampires, lycans, etc. The series focuses specifically on demons. (Demons are not spawn of Satan, but magical elements beings who have been distorted by human myths.) Jacob is the Enforcer of the demon race. He roots out and punishes those who seek to do harm to humans. His is a respected and necessary role, but a lonely one. Few demons want to befriend the Enforcer. His only true friend is Noah, the demon king.
One night while hunting a crazy, summoned demon, Jacob sees a human woman fall out of a 5th story window while she was stargazing (I'm going to resist laughing at the implausibility of a person falling from a window while stargazing in New York City for the moment. Just go with it.), and he saves her from crashing to her death. The woman is Bella (yes, another f'ing romantic heroine named Bella...), a human with some unusual talents--within their first meeting, she is able to sense the location of a summoned demon and kill him. Pretty kick-ass for a librarian. While the relationship between Jacob and Bella grows, so does the inexplicable psychic connection between them.
I finished this book, so I suppose it had enough going for it that it kept me reading, but I can't say I loved it. Part of me was confused by it. The author wrote it all serious-like, but then some weird thing would happen and I wouldn't know if the author was trying to be funny on purpose or if it was unintentional. For example, the falling out of the window thing. The author made few efforts to make this seem believable, so I couldn't tell if she made it ridiculous on purpose or not.
Then, this book used a particular plot device that is a pet peeve of mine. I don't want to come down on Frank for this, because she is by far not the only author who does this. In fact, it is done so much in romance that it has become cliché. I'm talking about the impossibly beautiful, smart, sexy woman who in her late twenties is still completely virginal and has to be taught sex by the uber experienced man. This is the twenty-first century! Unless there is a logical explanation to support why the woman would be inexperienced, why do this? To me, it sends a poor message to women about their sexuality. Women have just as much right to play the field and learn their bodies as men, so why do so many romance authors act like their women are coming straight out of the puritanical 1950's? In this book, Jacob had this enhanced sense of smell and her could smell that Bella had not been "marked by a man." Ewwwwww!!!!! Are you f'ing kidding me?
I blame editors for this also. If it doesn't make sense for the woman to be a virgin, why propagate that image? I guess women readers need to speak up more on this issue, which I why I am taking this review over as my soap box. An experienced woman does not mean she is promiscuous or a whore. If you are a reader and you agree with me on this, please speak up. Publishers and authors will continue to write characters like this if we let them.
So, I am going to toss this issue back over to all of you. What do you think of the virginal heroine in contemporary romances? Does it send a poor message to women or does it enhance the sexual tension. I would love to hear from you on this.
Before I sign off, my overall impression of Jacob is...
Plot - 2 ½ bookmarks
Character development - 2 ½ bookmarks
Love story - 3 bookmarks
Paranormal elements/world - 4 bookmarks (I think this is what kept me reading)
Dream cast (otherwise known as who I pictured while reading) - a young Liz Taylor (Bella), Manu Bennett (Jacob)

It's an interesting new twist on paranormal fantasy. Meek, innocent, librarian Isabella literally falls out of her five story window to land in the arms of Jacob, the demon Enforcer. Jacob spent three millenniums forcing other demons to comply to the rules of staying away from humans, and yet here he is bringing one home. The interplay between characters was charming to say the least. The book was fast paced and easily holds the readers interest. My only complaint was the fact that so many characters sounded interesting and Frank let so few in. Plus she opened up doors for conflict (such as with the council) and left them hanging. There could have been more way more conflict to create a more tense and interesting book. Still...I enjoyed reading it and am looking forward to the next installment.

The heroine started out much differently than she ended and the problem was there was no real traceable reason for her change. Unless it was the fact that she ended up having incredible power and that gave her the confidence to be much more in your face. There is no real character progression, one day the heroine is super sweet and the next day - she's not so sweet and innocent and much more aggressive. It's like the heroine is suddenly a different person - and I think that is what the author wanted to convey, because she learned a lot about herself and did end up, essentially a different person. But the internal dialogue that could have kept pace with this change was not there. However, since she was the sweet unassuming girl for only like two chapters, it didn't bother me much.
I liked the premise and I like the main and secondary characters. I think the writing could use some tightening up but it's still highly readable, and more importantly -- I am eagerly awaiting the next installment in this new series.

Imagine the stereotypical Harlequinn romance, complete with clunky, akward, yet explicit sex scenes...just add in demons. The writing is clunky and unspeakable, the characters are two dimensional at best. The villains are vague. You have no idea about the scene since unlike other authors who kill you with description, she barely provides any. To top it off, if the sex is what you're after, you'll walk away wondering if the heroine had both of her arms on the same side of her body b/c humans just can't engage in that manner...if you know what I mean. Buy it cheap or borrow it from the library. It's entertaining but there are better supernatural romance stories out there.

There is only one Enforcer, and it is his duty to ensure that the Nightwalkers never bring harm to humans. The Nightwalkers are not inherently evil, but sometimes a demon's control slips, especially near the Samhain or Beltane, and they unintentionally cause harm to a mortal. The Enforcer, Jacob, steps in then to stop it, and punish the wrong-doer.
But what happens when the Enforcer loses control? Who stops him before it is too late? While hunting a transformed demon who is beyond help, Jacob runs across the puzzling Isabella, who seems to be able to track demons instinctively, and has an unnerving talent for destroying them - something unheard of amongst the human race. More than that, she tests the limits of Jacob's self-control when no other has before.
Is Isabella more than she seems? She seems to hold secrets to the Nightwalkers' future, however unwittingly. Jacob knows he can't let her go, for both his sake and his peoples. But can their attraction be consummated without destroying them both? And does something deeper than the impending Samhain draw Jacob and Isabella together?
Demons are people too. At least, they are in new author Jacquelyn Frank's Nightwalkers world. If someone had told me before I read her debut novel, Jacob, that demons might have the same propensity for good or evil as any human, I might have questioned them. But after reading Jacob, I am a believer! OK, I'm not saying that I believe in demons, per se, but I did find the mythos Frank has created in this new series totally believable. In fact, I soon forgot that Jacob was supposed to be a demon. For me, he was simply a man that happened to be a different species than Isabella.
Jacquelyn Frank cost me some sleep, though, I will admit. I could not put this book down once I started it. Completely enraptured by the story, I thought if I could not finish the story by morning, I might just have to play hooky from work for the first time in my life to stay home and read! LOL
Isabella was undeniably charming, with a freshness and a wit that captivates the readers as easily as it did the Nightwalkers she meets. It is no wonder that Jacob falls so easily for her. She is all at once wholesome, sexy, funny, intelligent, and noble. Only slightly startled by the fact of the Nightwalkers' existence, she accepts their place in the world without judgment, and resolves to help her new friends with their current plight without hesitation.
Jacob's quandary in determining how to handle Isabella is heart-breaking. Even while knowing he needs to keep his distance for her own safety, he can't help but be drawn to her. His protectiveness and passion have the reader praying for a way they can be together, and the author does not disappoint us in the end, providing a HEA that will guarantee satisfaction for the romantics in her audience.
Jacob: The Nightwalkers is the kind of story that saddens you when it ends, because you crave more, and leaves you salivating in anticipation when you learn it is only the first of many to come in this fascinating new series!

I came upon Jacob unexpectedly when reading something in between my usual reads. I really enjoyed it. This is a very sensual read. I have since read all the rest of the Nightwalker series. I did not enjoy the rest of the series as much. That is not to say the books are bad, they are just not as good as Jacob. The chemistry between the main characters in this novel is excellent. The rest of the books are ok, but nothing outstanding. I read that she is working on a new Nightwalker novel and I look forward to seeing if she can recapture the magic she had on this one. Either way, this particular book is a solid paranormal romance and very much worth reading, even if you skip the rest of the series.

I heard about Jacquelyn Frank from a friend and I decided to check out the Nightwalkers series.
Jacob is the first book in the series. He is one of the elder demon also known as the Enforcer; whom others at time fears him. Isabella meets Jacob one night while he was searching from someone.
From the moment he saved her when she fell, things started to Heat up.... and boy was it hot. As the story progresses we find out more about Bella and Jacob.. Those two can barely keep their hands off each other. they are quite passionate beings.
This book reminds me sort of the BDB series a little and I like it.
Besides the grammar issues it was still a good read.

This was so painful to read. Descriptions that should've taken one sentence purple-prosed into overly long paragraphs. I found myself laughing at the corniness and second-hand embarrassment.
"It was a profound moment when she realized the depth of artistry there was to be found in lovemaking. Or was it just lovemaking with Jacob? He was so sure of himself, so intent on the smallest touch, the simplest detail, increasing the magnitude, adding layers to create complexity. As he touched her one way, he tasted her in another....
The surge of need in his thoughts and his reaction to her response washed over her as she reached for his perspective....."
Complete with The Earth Moved and blah blah blah. Excessive emphasis on how the heroine is a tiny, pixie-like "little flower" compared to the big, strong, powerful male? Check. Heroine goes from normal to super powered and oh my gosh she doesn't even realize how beautiful and wonderful and super teenie tiny yet sexxah she is? Check.
What little plot it had was smothered in flowery purple prose and I had to skim/skip it to finish reading. If you really want to read this book, consider borrowing from a friend/library; don't waste your money.

Browsing the bookstore for something to keep me entertained on a slow weekend I happened across Jacob. I had initially put it in my "maybe" pile, looking for something more familiar. Boy, am I glad I didn't. I now have a new author to look forward to. Who, of course, wouldn't love Jacob? A strong alpha male, but who actually has his own insecurities. This makes him a little more loveable. And Isabella, finally a woman who can kick some a**. And Jacob, being the secure man that he is, lets her find her strength without too much male posturing. The story line was kind of familiar (good vs evil, she loves him, he loves her, fight scenes, flying) but also quite refreshing and new. Who knew that demons could be the good guys? I look forward anxiously for Gideon in 2007. Thank you Jacki Frank!!

I really liked both main characters. Yes, they don't differ much from all the literature out there of this type of the book.
Sometimes I think that once you read one you read them all. But, the nightwalkers are very interesting in the sense of a little novelty on the old path.
I enjoyed the book from beginning to end, even though on the back of my mind I knew it wasn't much different from the rest.
At least not much different Alyssa's Day Atlantis type of plot. Same I see you and I will love you forever. Honestly, what happened with the seduction? If it is all set as magical match making it lacks all the seduction don't you think?
Well, it is well written nonetheless. The author has style, use very good words to express feelings, the sex scenes are not the hottest, too much emotions going on, too much thoughts, honestly sometimes I think, how can they think so much as they are doing each other?

Jacob is a magnetic character and a powerful introduction to the Nightwalkers series.
This book sets the background for all that is to come in this series (I began at book four).
Jacob is one of several powerful demons: Gideon, Elijah, Noah. They are called Demons but in fiction they are more virtuous than demonic. When Isabella "falls" into Jacob's arms he learns what it is to lay down his life for another.

Jacob is the Enforcer of the Demon world. Appointed by Noah, the Demon King, his job is to keep the Demons from succumbing to the madness that plagues them on the full moon. The Demons are Nightwalkers. Just as the Vampires and Lycanthropes do, Demon's thrive at night. Mating between a human and a Demon is strictly forbidden. Human magic-users known as necromancers have used their magic to summon Demons from the world, but none have done so in a long while.
Isabella Russ is an innocent and fairly quiet woman. Lately Isabella has felt restless though. While gazing at the moon from her window one night, as she frequently does lately, Isabella sees Jacob on the street. After saving her from falling, Jacob and Isabella suddenly find themselves fighting for their lives.
There is definitely something different about Isabella, Jacob's insatiable attraction to her is proof enough. While confined with Jacob and the other Demons, they all begin to learn about Isabella's part in their future and all the while the battle to save themselves, the Demons, and their newfound love rages around Jacob and Isabella.
The Nightwalkers proves to be a spectacular new series with Jacob. Each unique character is intriguing and the creative storyline is fascinating. Jacob's nearly overwhelming desire to posses and protect Isabella is lovingly intense. Isabella's fire, passion, and innocence make her very endearing. I am desperate to find out what happens to the other stars of this story. Gideon's book cannot come quick enough for this reader! In Jacob, every line, every page, and every chapter is simply mesmerizing!

Jacob is the first in The Nightwalkers Series. He's an elder, over 600 years old, and the Enforcer of his demon brethren. He is the only one who can uphold justice when a demon is overtaken by the madness. A madness that will lead them down a path that can eventually harm the human that they become obsessed with. For humans are forbidden to demons - punishable by the Enforcer himself. Jacob has never succumbed to the madness himself - but when a tiny, spitfire by the name of Isabella literally falls into his arms he had no idea his whole world was about to change - and that he would be the one that would be breaking the rules.
Isabella was the perfect match for Jacob. Where he is calm - she is explosive. I absolutely loved her character. She was downright funny at times and I definitely found myself laughing out loud more than once. I loved their interactions, dialogue and, of course, romantic interludes. I am a big fan of paranormal/soulmate romances, and this one fit the bill. Bella's encounters with the Demon kind was great because you go on the journey with her. Every new discovery is a thrill to her as well as to you as the reader. There was plenty of action (and I mean that in more than one way ::wink-wink::). With the threat of Necromancers and Jacob and Bella trying to save themselves and their friends, there was never a dull moment. I loved the introduction to most of the characters you will be encountering within the upcoming books (i.e. Gideon, Noah, Elijah, Magdalegna, etc.) I think out of all 5 books this was my favorite. Although one of the one's with the most action, it also was the one with the lightest feel to it.

Jacob the Enforcer belongs to one of the many Nightwalker races that thrive on the dark of night. He has a job to do for his species and it's rather straightforward. He polices his people. During the full moon their animal urge to mate overcomes them, and if they stay within their race they never need to encounter the Enforcer. But if they cross the line and turn their lust to another species...say humans...it's Jacob's duty to prevent them and then to punish them severely for it. As this 'madness' grows worse and worse for his people, there is hardly a family who hasn't felt the brutal sting of Jacob's justice. Punishment is so dire and so feared, Jacob can call very few others his friend and the life the Enforcer leads is a very solitary one.
Then one night during a hunt for one of his own, he encounters the first human woman who will tempt him in all of his 622 years of life. Isabella is a simple Bronx gal who works at her local library, lives with her sister and owns a cat.
She hardly expects a night of moongazing to change her life forever and send her falling for a man like Jacob in all kinds of outrageous ways. Heck, she certainly doesn't expect that he isn't exactly a 'man'... although he sure looks like one, smells like one and boy-oh-boy does he feel like one!
As for the Enforcer, Jacob finds himself tempted beyond reason, needing Isabella to the point that he begins to strain against every law he has always upheld.
But before long the couple finds themselves fighting for their lives against evil, Jacob's brethren, and even their own desires for each other. How can they find the way to resist one another before Jacob faces his own punishments...or before Bella ends up dead, torn up from the animal passion inside of him that she, as a human, is too frail to ever endure?
I thought this book was very well done it was very exciting. I thought That Jacob was great very strong loyal protective handsome Demon. whats not to love..lol Bella is a very strong heroin shes is very excepting of the new world she has just ben through into , i like her because she not all whinny and scared of everything like some of the heroins in my books. She is very brave and is willing to take on the world for her man. This book totally kept my interest it is a definite read.

Jacob the Enforcer is a Demon whose responsibility is to protect humankind and Demons alike. It's only twice a year that Demons are vunerable to Moon Lust. It is during those times that Jacob has to punish his fellow Demons to protect his race as well as the human race. When Isabella literally falls into his arms, Jacob is stunned by his feelings for her, as he has never been tempted by Moon Lust.
Isabella is a librarian who lives a rather dull life. When Jacob saves her life, he brings her into a world that she had no idea exsisted, but is intrigued by nonetheless. Together they go on a journey that they soon learn has been pre-destined.
In many paranormal novels, vampires are either good or bad. I have never read any novel with a good Demon. Jacquelyn Frank brings the impossible idea of good Demons to the pages in JACOB and makes it believeable. The love story between Jacob and Bella is as intense as it is sweet. When Bella finds an ancient prophecy that has been buried for centuries, Jacob has to contend with the fact that he may have punished innocent Demons and humans alike. Overall, this is a great start to a series. I would definitely give it a try!

I loved this book and have read it twice already! I had never heard of the author but I liked the cover and there was a recommendation from Christine Feehan which was all I needed to see to pick it up. Some of the reviewers here seem to think that the hero, Jacob, might not have been tortured enough or that the heroine 'Isabella' might have found her strength too easily (come on people if you suddenly found out that you could fight the bad guys wouldn't you want to try it out?).
Ms. Frank brings a whole new world to play here. Demons, one race of 'Nightwalkers', control the natural elements of the Earth - Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Mind, Body and have been around since the beginning of time. Jacob is a powerful Earth demon who is the Enforcer for the Demons, making sure that their laws and codes are upheld and no humans are hurt during times of madness that affects them during the Hallowed moons at Samhain (Halloween) and Beltane (May). It is during one of these patrols that Jacob meets Isabella who helps him destroy a 'summoned' demon and is brought into the knowledge of his kind. It turns out that Isabella is Jacob's mate and they all soon find out something about Isabella and her place in their world that no one, especially Isabella, could ever have forseen.
Throw in some hunky demons, zealous necromancers (magic-using humans who say they're trying to save the world - yeah right!) and romance and you've got a great read. I can't wait for Gideon's story!

If you enjoy paranormal romance you will *love* this book. Jacob is the first in Jacquelyn Frank's series The Nightwalkers, which centers around Demons (powerful elemental beings) and also incorporates vampires and lycanthropes (shapeshifters/were-animals). The character Jacob is The Enforcer of the Demons, a sort of policeman for his race (except there is only one of him). One of his duties in this role is to keep other Demons from attempting to mate with humans- a race seemingly fragile to them. Jacob becomes seriously conflicted when he becomes powerfully drawn to a human himself. Fortunately for Jacob (and the rest of the Demons) there is more to his Isabella than meets the eye.
Jaquelyn Frank amazingly manages to write a serious paranormal romantic tale (versus the tongue-in-cheek variety such as MaryJanice Davidson's Undead series) without becoming too dark, too depressing, or too disturbing. She also manages to write within an increasingly popular genre without creating material that feels recycled or leaves the reader feeling like they have "been there, done that."

Ms. Frank has started this Nightwalker series with Jacob. I already can't wait for the rest. This book is engrossing, interesting, heart-wrenching, and charming. Her alternate "species" The Nightwalkers, are not necessarily anything new but she writes their story with cleverness and appeal. She allows you to understand their world without getting bogged down in metaphysical detail that saps the fun out of a story. You want to like these people, you want to know them....and after some of the scenes, you want to love them! It's pure fantasy with (to quote from the book) "disgustingly good-looking" characters, schmaltzy but infinitely likeable (and hot) romance, suspense, and humor. Read this book for fun and escape. You will not be disappointed.

Aside from the irony of a Demon being named Jacob, I found this book to be an enjoyable and quick read. I completed it in 3-1/2 hours.
Written in the style of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by J. R. Ward, the first of the Night Walkers Series, Jacob, was a great start for a new author.
The heroine was quite believable. She was down-to-earth, feisty, intelligent and the equivalent of a female ninja! Yee hawww!
The hero sounded quite dashing. A bod to die for and a foreign accent to boot. He was brooding enough to be scary, quick enough to be dangerous, macho enough to be hated and protective enough to be endearing.
I can't wait for the sequel.

I am an avid reader of paranormal romance and horror novels. The more other-wordly - the better. You name the author and I guarantee you - I've read something they've written. In passing, at my favorite bookstore, I picked up "Jacob" and skimmed the back. On a whim it found itself in my basket. I am so glad that I had that whim!! From lycanthropes to vampires to witches, never did I suspect that demons or a demon-reality could be depicted in such avid colors. From the first page of this book I felt that Ms. Frank reached through the book, grabbed me by the collar and didn't let me go until I finished the last sentence. Even then, I kept flipping pages looking for more!!! Her use of imagery and words to paint the picture of emotions and actions is unbelievable. I know a good book and good author when I find myself laughing while reading or feel my heart jumping as I turn pages!!! I can't wait until the next book and I look forward to any books Ms. Frank turns out! A must read for anyone wanting a break from the mundane humdrum of life. It's a roller coaster ride that keeps you begging for more!!

I agree with other reviewers that this series has potential. Jacob was a compelling hero and the writer introduces us to other males who will likely have their own book later in the series. I also like the Nightwalker/Demon premise. There are so many paranormal books anymore, true originality is hard to find. This book is not grippingly original, but the ideas are sound and the writer does a nice job explaining the details of the Nightwalker world without sounding like an expository essay on the subject.
My biggest complaint with the book is the heroine and her (supposedly) humorous comments. When the plot got compelling and the characters faced a tremendous problem (just when I am looking for that darkness that I find in, say, JR Ward's writing) the heroine would say something that sent her into giggles or that had the Demons suddenly laughing. This broke the mood for me and never allowed the men in this book to be as truly strong and sensual as they could have been.
Still, I enjoyed the book and will read others in the series.

What a fun paranormal read this turned out to be! The plot was fast paced and exciting, the characters irresistible, steamy sex filled with passion and it even had some unexpected humor thrown in there. Ill definitely check out more in this series.

For me this is probably one of the best paranormal romance novels ever written. I was not as impressed with rest of the series but still loved reading every individual demons story. However, I wished, with Noah being the last book that the series could have had a better ending.
I love this style of writing. I also loved Christine Feehan's dark series and drake sisters. If anybody can suggest similar authors it would be much appreciated.

Storyline and characters are entertaining, although do th life of me I don't know why she chose the names "Bella" and "Jacob". The plot was very engaging and I really enjoyed the supporting characters as well. The slightly misogynistic undertones are keeping me from giving a full five stars.

Yup, the main characters are Jacob & Bella. How original!
This review is for the audio version. The narrator, ugh, the narrator. Bella is given a nasally, party girl, Paris Hilton accent. And like another reviewer stated, Jacob sounds like Count Chocula.
I've only finished 2 hours of this book and really don't think I'll be able to finish it all. The main characters have barely spoken to each other, but have already been humping like crazed dogs. Virginal Bella wakes in a strange house, half naked with someone else's clothes on, starts talking and tantalizing Jacob by fondling his antiques......ensue the humping.....the walls fly off the house (literally,) debris flying, hurricane winds, Bella floating in mid air, strange man moving Bella and objects with the flick of a finger, yet Bella never stops to wonder what's going on. Not a second thought about these strange things. Oh, forgot to mention, Bella is NOT a member of the paranormal world. Anything supernatural would surely throw up a red flag to her, but I think the author forgot to emphasize that.
If I can manage to get through anymore of this book, I'll update my review. But honestly I don't think I can listen to one more comment about petite Bella's luxurious raven hair.
UPDATE: *sigh* Well, I'm desperate for a good audiobook and have tried to finish Jacob. I'm the type who always has my ear buds in with an audio book going. I listen while I clean, cook, do laundry, drive, etc. I can easily put away 1 book per day, if it's a good book. Recently, my selection has been limited. I've run out of good books to listen to! Hense the reason that I'm still attempting Jacob. I have the WHOLE series, up to date, on audio! That's another 5 books that I can listen to, after this one. But oh boy, if they're anything like this.....sigh. I am currently up to hour 8 of Jacob. I think this time I'll put it down and not finish it. 8 hours of Bella's raven hair, violet eyes, petite frame....ugh. Plus, the narrator's version of Bella gets more whiney as the hours go by. Every time Bella opens her mouth, she puts her fists on her hips and whines that nasily voice. I think there's been a time or 2 where she actually stomped her foot. There's nothing in the world more annoying than a whiney child. So to my ears, Bella's voice and actions are like finger nails on a chalk board. Jacob's voice has gotten more irritating too. "Bbeeeeeeellaa" He drags it out in his Count Chocula way. The narrator is trying to be seductive, but it ends up sounding creepy. If you're standing in the yard, just chit chatting, there's no need to have the "seductive" tone to every word. Plus, every sentence that's exchanged between Bella and Jacob ends in the other's name. Yes, we know Bella is talking to Jacob.....We don't have to be reminded every 5 words. Plus, the narrator trying to be seductive everytime one of their names is spoken, ends up grating on the nerves. It's VERY repetitive!
So my conclusion, if you're into science fiction with a kick-butt story, and a romance as the back story, this is NOT the book for you! This is one of those "lots of sex from the beginning" books with a little mystery in the background. The "big bad" in this book has had maybe 3 or 4 minutes of air time so far, out of 8 hours.

Jacob is the demon enforcer for his people. He keeps the human population safe from those of his people that would do them harm. He knows his duty and does it well. But, when it comes time for him to face his weakness in the form of human named Isabella all bets are off. His heart awakens for the first time in centuries and only when he holds Isabella does he feel completed. But, how can that be? It's not until he brings her back to his demon world that they learn the truth of Isabella's existence and its importance to Jacob as well as his people. But, will Isabella accept the love he has to offer or will a mutual enemy destroy all?
This is the first title in Ms. Frank's "The Nightwalker" series and I must say she is off to a brilliant start. I can't wait for the next title that will be releasing in May! The make-believe world she has created is fresh and new and something fan's of the paranormal genre will highly enjoy. Jacob and Isabella's romance is by turns sensual and edge of your seat reading. There has been a great deal of ground work set for the upcoming titles. For those that are getting tired of the same vampire paranormal this will be a welcome change. The reader will laugh, cry and sigh with pleasure. Ms. Frank is an author I highly recommend we keep our eye on!

There are plenty of reviews here that give a synopsis on this book, so I'll just toss out my opinion. I am very, VERY cautious about trying new authors. But this book came with a recommend from a few authors and readers and I finally decided to try it.
And am I ever glad I did. What an intriguing world Ms. Frank has built! Jacob is a promising start to a new series and my interest has been snagged. Yes, there is room for a bit of refinement in the dialogue, but I can promise that this book held me until the final page! I can't recommend it enough. If you like strong alpha heroes, this book is for you!
Excellent start, Ms. Frank! I am happily waiting for Gideon's turn!

I really had high hopes for this series and similar to other readers, bought 3 novels at one go. Now I have a hard time just trying to finish Jacob. The premise is interesting as you don't find a lot of writers who are sympathetic to Demons. But I found it hard to reconcile that Jacob, the Enforcer, who has had centuries to hone his skills, had to rely on Isabella to save him not once but a few times. I don't like stories where skills appear without having been earned. For more than half the book, the story barely, moves with all the characters being angsty about what's going on in their culture. The sex descriptions are good (although he can't seem to get his fingers untangled from her hair!). I'll try Gideon (who really reminds you of Gregori from Christine Feehan's series) and see if I like it any better.

Jackie has a spell binding effect on people when they read JACOB. Everyone I know that has read it has not been able to put it down. A few took a while to get onto it, others took only minutes. Once started and hooked they (me included) read it with out putting it down. I think I read it in 3 hours. I have a baby at home, so its hard for me to sit still that long taking care of her. The book was so good that I ONLY took care of her and read the book that afternoon. I fell in love with it in a heartbeat. Jacob is great with Bella and its all sweet and romance. Gideon and Lenga however I think will be all fire and consumption. I am addicted to the series already and cant wait till June for GIDEON and then December for ELIJAH!
Jacob leads you down a path thats rarely taken with alot of authors these days. You walk the path with them and you feel like you are really there. I love how Jackie captured all my senses and swept me away into her world of the Night.
NIGHTWALKERS is a must have series for those that LOVE paranormal romance.
I hate romances myself, but for her and this series I might be able to stop sayting that. She SO ROCKED IT! Everytime I ask at the stores up here about JACOB its sold out. That alone tells you that theres something to it. If you arent sure after reading this review, then read the book and make up your own mind. I guarantee you will be as addicted as I am and I made my friends to this new obsession.

Typical formula romance/paranormal book. I was able to skip all the pages and pages and pages of sex scenes and not miss any of the story.....glad it was a digital library loan...I would have felt ripped off of I had bought it..

I wasn't sure what to expect from this particular author. I am a huge fan of paranormal romance, but I found this one to be a bit forced. The characters were not really all that interesting, the story line was a bit dull, and the action sequences were overwritten. I kind of think the author had about three really sexy scenes written before beginning this project and was just looking for a way to slam them all into one book. The only problem with that is, there are much better erotic books out there! This is not one I would recommend...sorry!

Something about this book just caught my interrest, glad it did. Loved it and cant wait to follow the series along. Nice to have another Paranormal series to add to the collection. This series has replaced some others on my must read as soon as they come out list. Different, not the same old same old, but still the part of the genre that I so like.

This is my first Jacuelyn Frank novel. I bought the whole series based upon the reviews, hoping I was going to end up with something I was happy with. And did I ever!
The story of Jacob and Isabella was magical and sweet. The whole story was filled with fantastic magical abilities and an erotically sexual tension that left me breathless and turning the pages as quickly as I could read through them.
I was drawn in from page one. There was no down time. The story flowed effortlessly and kept me enthralled until the last page.
Jacob is HOT and an alpha hunk. Isabella is pure and sweet and book smart...(but she can be a feisty little thing if the situation is warranted). Destiny putting them together unlocks a wonderful new world of changes for both and a love so pure there is no chance of denying it. There is intrigue and mystery, laughter and some tears, adventure and battles. I feel like I just experienced the adventure first hand!
The author has masterfully introduced a number of secondary characters that I know now are in books of their own...and I can't wait to read their stories because she has made me care for them already through her wonderful storytelling in this first book of the series.
I love Christine feehan's Dark series, Kresley Cole's series, Laurel k. Hamilton series, Lora Leigh 'The breeds"series, and Gena Showalter's atlantis series. But I think I just tapped into another author that I will be watching out for from now on. Buy it, read it, you'll love it...if you love paranormal romance.

I loved this story. The characters were fun and sexy, the story line was at different times both humorous and suspenseful. While I found some of the passages giving background to the story, like the history of the Demons, a bit long, it was definitely worth reading to get to all the great parts. I can't wait to read the 2nd book in this series.

I don't understand the people who have given this book anything less than 5 stars!! This book is so good, it's so far up there, it's with Christine Feehan, Laurell K. Hamilton and J. R. Ward. Wonderful, wonderful book!!The hero and heroine were truly amazing. They were well defined and interesting. The other characters were well written and fun to get to know. Can't wait for their books, ;), especially Elijah's!!! Please keep writing Jacquelyn, PLEASE!!!!!

The premise of the story is sort of different -- Good looking Demon heroes protecting their secret world and the world at large. Ok fine. Where I had a problem with this book was that its narration and dialogue was repetitive -- from the explanation of Demon politics/history, to the personality quirks and mannerisms of the characters, I felt like the author ran out of things to say and found it necessary to keep driving home points that had been made already.

I thorougly enjoy this book, however, there are a few things that people may find helpful to know before buying it. Be prepared in the first book to be clueless about the truth of nightwalker's species until the middle of the book.
The author did a good job writing and has a great imagination, however doesn't do the readers justice of a preamble to discuss the races or how they interact/ live with one another.

I'm always looking for a good paranormal romance. Heck, I'm always looking for a good romance period. What really caught my eye was how Christine Feehan, Linda Howard and Sherrilyn Kenyon appeared to really endorse this story. Actually, I probably needed only one of those authors to really endorse a story and I'm all over it.
This story didn't really do it for me. For a number of reasons actually.
1. For starters, I love paranormals, but the "Demon" stuff really threw me. I just couldn't see them as sexy, no matter how you twist it. However, I was prepared to get over that.
2. Are we sure that Christine Feehan didn't write this book? Jacqui Frank appeared to really "borrow heavily" from the Carpathian series. From "the words to bind a lifemate to the safeguards on the house" were eerily reminiscent of things I've read in Christine Feehan's stories. Finally,
3. I just had problems getting into the story. What state or country were they in? Was it in England or New York? I couldn't really tell. There was talk about likening Jacob's house to the English countryside, but nothing definitive. Plus, was the demon world, in "our world," or was it another realm entirely? Nothing ever was said about this.
I was really confused reading the story. I think it was just poorly written.

Hi, I just finished reviewing another book with the same flaw as this one, and I decided to pop in and review this book as well.
Bottom line: I do not get how the whole "I'm widdle and cute and adowable but commanding and dangerous too" female got started, or how it got past professional editorial departments (my respect for publishers has gone vastly downhill over the years). This type of character doesn't work. Period. It's too stupidly gratuitous to even grant respect.
Pick a character and stick with it. If someone is commanding and dangerous, have the guts to write that person as commanding and dangerous. If a character is widdle and cute and adowable, then write that character that way. Ms. Frank's heroine doesn't work for me at all because of this reason.
Having said this, she does have some good sensuality she gets going, and I did read her second book, which was much better on the "widdle and cute" thing--her characters were a bit more believable. Perhaps Ms. Frank will continue to improve as she goes; I hope so.

I hesitated getting this book initially, but I don't regret it now!
Jacob definitely is a new premise in the paranormal even though the idea
of the paranormal as different species entirely isn't new. I was also
sceptical about this book being based on a race of nice, decent Demonkind. But I am glad to be wrong! The meeting between the protag, Jacob the enforcer and how he changes because of meeting Isabelle is a lovely crafted tale. Hopefully, future books will explain how the demon's are summoned and why their kind and the druids literally tried to wipe each other oout. I look forward to following this series!

I'm so tired of the wannebes writing such paranormal drek. This book was a wake up call. I loved the intensity between Jacob and Noah (the King). The idea of pulling a switch on the demon mythology really took me by surprise- great job! If you like books by Christine Feehan then this book will pull you in.
Please RateJacob: The Nightwalkers
Jacob's world is turned upside down when he meets a young woman named Isabella (Bella). Having never been tempted before to break the demon laws, he finds himself uncontrollably drawn to Bella. To further complicate matters, he discovers that Bella has the ability to kill demons, something that humans should not be able to do.
After bringing themselves before the King, Jacob and Bella become a subject of study and speculation. Demons believe in destiny, as well as their ancient prophecies, and the King believes that Bella is meant to be part of their world. As Bella researches the demon library, she discovers more and more information to tie her fate to the demon species. Discussions with one of the demon elders confirm their suspicions.
I had a hard time getting through this book. In fact, there were times I didn't want to finish it. After careful consideration, I think the audio book format was the main reason I wanted to stop. The story might have been more palatable if I had read the actual book. Don't get me wrong, the book itself had a lot of problems. But nothing in the book itself was quite as bad as listening to the ridiculous voices the narrator used on the audio book. The voice of Jacob sounded like Count Chocula, which is exactly what I pictured every time he spoke. Bella's voice was permanently breathy/sleepy, as if she was trying to seduce someone every time she opened her mouth. Seriously? Do women really walk around talking like that? Not any women I know. The narrator was Xe Sands, and I intend to avoid any audio book read by her. Ugh, it was terrible.
With that out of the way, I'll move on to the book. In a word, it was boring. With the exception of the last 2-3 chapters, the whole book was about the feelings/attraction/draw between Jacob and Bella. There was no identifiable plot, no subplots, no adventure, no excitement, and no one else's point of view. There weren't even villains in the story (except in discussions between the characters) until the very end. Lastly, there were no description of the settings, so it feels like the characters are just standing in empty rooms the whole time.
The ONLY redeeming quality of this book is that the idea was interesting. Demons walking the Earth among us as the good guys, each with different powers based on their element and age, here to protect humans from darker forces while falling in love along the way.... well, it sounded like something new, and it was. It's too bad that the interesting idea was written so poorly.
What wasn't original was the main character's names.... Jacob and Bella? Stephenie Meyer's Twilight and New Moon were both published before this book was. Out of an endless supply of name choices, the author chose to use two of the three primary names from one of the highest selling paranormal series of all time? It was a poor choice.
Sorry readers, I can't recommend this one. Perhaps one of Jacquelyn Frank's other series would be more worthwhile.
