This book is absolutely mesmerizing! I could barely put it down. Fantasy and sci-fi have always been my favorites. Preston combines fiction with so much fact that it's hard to decipher at times. I read all his books.

He's done it again! How can Douglas Preston keep writing books that I cant put down. This one takes the reader from the jungles of the far east to a small town in New England. If you like this then you should definitely check out Blood for Oil by Michael Kelley. Blood for Oil

Ignore half of the one star reviews. Those reviewers gave the one star because of complaints about digital pricing and digital availability. They did not give the one star due to a review of the book's content. A majority of the reviewers DID NOT even read the book.

Now for the book and the content of the book. It is a fun book to read. It's a little loose but the story makes up for that. It is a pretty cool idea. The best part of the book is the last third, don't give up on it before that. The book is a very fast and an easy read. It has very short chapters, which can be good and bad. Short chapters make it easy to take breaks, but they also can drag you on longer than you wanted because they leave you hanging and wanting more.

I would have given the book three stars, but went with the four to help fight the one star non-reviews.

Take the book to the cottage this summer and enjoy it!

If you know anything about commercial fishermen this story makes a lot of sense. These guys can be real characters and the story defines them beautifully.
The characters are full of life and very exciting.

After reading some of the reviews on the store I was a bit reluctant to purchase this book, although I'm glad I did.

Impact is an excellent read and if you want to be entertained then I highly recommend it.

Yes, the plot is a bit far-fetched but hey, it's fiction. I thought the plot was clever and I kept wondering how it would end.

My only criticism of this work is that it's a bit too short. I think if it had been another 30,000 words that the characters could have been more fully developed and the plot made a bit stronger.

All in all it was well worth the money and the time I spent reading it!

I enjoyed the audio, many references to meteorite issues and sailing/boating issues i didnt know. I also went to my atlas to search the coast of Maine. Some raw language that was OK in the context of the story. Performed well with different voices and an IMPACTFUL ending, glad i caught and bought it.

I have read, and really enjoyed, a number of books by Douglas Preston, but this one was disappointing. The characters were poorly developed and uninspiring, and the plot was thin with several loose ends, dropped threads and even cliché-ish as sub-plots were brought to fruition. Further, even though the story culminated with an interesting concept, Preston disarmed the most powerful aspect of the conclusion at the very end. In addition, the science was not up to par with Preston's usual attention to detail; an aspect which may not bother most, but irked me. I should have paid attention to the 3 star rating and passed on this one.

Now that Michael Crichton is gone, we need a writer who combines science wrapped around by an absorbing story. Could Douglas Preston be the one? It is possible. "Impact" has good science (well, almost) and an even better story. The basic premise reminded me of "Sentinel" by Arthur C. Clarke, another departed favorite author of mine. Like most mystery books, this too leaves some lose ends untied. But overall it was good and fast paced read.

Too bad about all the folks having trouble with their Kindles and missing out on this great story. I have to agree with others, however, that they shouldn't give the book a bad review if they haven't read it. The hardback version I purchased had no problems at all. My husband and I both read it and thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters. It's a "read while you stir the soup", can't put it down page-turner. Great fun! Thanks to Mr. Preston for another highly enjoyable book.

Another fast paced thriller from Preston, Impact begins with a bang that never stops until the very end of the book. The characters are engaging, and I liked everyone that I was supposed to like and didn't those I was not supposed to. By the end of the book, I wanted to find out more about what was going on on Mars and what the fall out would be when the people in charge found out the truth of what the signal revealed.
