Frankly, this novel suffered many of the same weaknesses of the first. It is better in that you've become used to characters making idiotic, unrealistic, and completely out of character, decisions. Unfortunately since so much of the plot is driven by character actions, those actions are critical to a plausible story line.

...When you tie in utterly unrealistic 'acts of god', and farcical physics assumptions, things go from "... a stretch" to "...just plain stupid"

In Earth's darkest hour true heroes and heroines emerge to bring us hope and to pull us back from the brink of oblivion. Flawed astronaut/superhero/troubled and weary soul Adam steps forward again to save the day. Along the way he battles his toughest foe, his guilt ridden conscious and self doubt. Blue Hope shows us a glimpse into who we all are; human beings doing their best to survive, living life, making mistakes, laughing, crying, celebrating and trying to make each day count.

If you read Red Hope, you loved it and you must read Blue Hope! If you haven't read either of them - you must! I thoroughly enjoy how John writes his characters, allowing them to make mistakes and grow their humanity or make mistakes and lose their humanity. For the same reasons I wanted you to write a sequel to Red Hope, I now need a sequel to Blue Hope!

I am impatiently awaiting your next book! Whatever the genre.

So I really liked this series. Could hardly put it down. Very impressive that it is the author's first series. However, there are a few structural issues I would like to address.

The author spends nearly 25% of the book discussing events in the first book, presumably for readers who did not read the first. However, given the books are not very long in isolation, this was not at all necessary and cause some frustrations for me personally to get through the first part of the book.

I also think there are some inconsistencies in the characters. For example, Chris seems to have been described in a different way in the first book than what he seems in the second book. While I am all for characters changing (or maybe showing their true character), this particular character's transition seemed very sudden and was not drawn out very well.

There are a lot of science concepts that were not accurately addressed and at some points I had to suspend disbelief. For example, it the world recovered from nuclear war in a matter of months, when in reality it would have taken much longer (the EMP effects of nukes were not address at all). While I understand that the majority of the nukes were modified so they were tiny and precise to infrastructure, the book alludes to a about a dozen or so conventional nukes that destroyed city centers. I don't know, the quick recovery seemed really unbelievable to me. However, the author did a good job with other science concepts. Just felt like some things were a bit rushed or not thought out fully.

Anyway, I would highly recommend this book, but just keep in mind there are some minor flaws that will not really affect your enjoyability. I look forward to this author's next book.

John:

I think you just joined "The Boys Club". That of two middle aged guys in the back water of the South Pacific during WWII and a third rate insurance agent of a similar age who got bored and pecked out a book in a more recent age. Their names were Herman, Jim, and Tom. Herman had to write a fourth book to get notice (The first was crap, the second was readable, the third was OK). Then he wrote Kane Mutiny.

I like science fiction that doesn't defy physics and logic. Arthur C Clarke wrote of things that hadn't been invented like foam steel which can only be cast in zero gravity, and jet engines with no moving parts which have now come into existence. (no potato people or expanding spaces)

The story continues seamlessly. There are a few plot twists that keep this very interesting. Love the author's style. I was satisfied with the number of characters and how easy it was to keep them straight (hate when there are a bunch of characters interacting within too many multiple sub plots). The plot was clean and the subplots made this very interesting. Overall, I liked this book better than Red Hope.

The first book, Red Hope held such promise but Blue Hope didn’t quite measure up. It had many good moments especially on the moon. However, getting to the moon was a little dry and boring and once there it was a little too predictable even though the “price was right” behind door number three, yuk yuk. I thought the ending was going to be predictable but turned out to be the biggest surprise of the book and redeemed its readability.

I previously read the first, Red Hope, which led into Blue Hope. I was held in anxiety when I finished the later. They were very well written and composed a developing intrigue to read more. Too short! The're better be a sequel and I don't care what color. I would have liked to learn more about the race that "you" failed to mention where the other Martians did survive on the Moon and we returned for further exploration and found them. Hey, a sequel just appeared. A good read.

I loved the first book, and gave it a great review. I am 3/4+ through this one and had to stop and comment lest I forget. There have been a few ridiculous scenarios so far, one was the deep sea dive accident, contrived just to kill off a poorly developed character, another was the water damaged Porsche after 10 minutes in the rain and being sold for $5k, and now the stupid scene of the cooler leaking CO2 gas. They could patch a hole in the hull but they can't seal a leak in a $3,000,000 cooler.
Losing a fan quickly...

Thank you Mr. Dresse for your enjoyable books. I have read sci-fi for many years and your story is very unusual, entertaining and very hard to put down. I enjoyed your characters that were very well developed and easy to relate to. It is a shame that the world must go through such misery to gain so much hope, but I think history shows us that it has happened before and will happen again.. I hope you have more books planned as I will be waiting to read them.

I enjoyed these books very much. I was hoping your astronaut redeemed himself. I was glad to see he did.
The human condition is hard to overcome in stressful situations.
We find ourselves in treacherous times with our government running amok.
May your future books show hope and that we will overcome any real or imaginary problems in the great frontier we call space.

(Review by Stephen V Cole, PE, her husband.) this covers both books.

Readable light fiction, worthy use for a rainy afternoon.

Bit heavy on the sci-fi "gimmies". We just happen to have these cool engines for a fast trip. We just happen to have this miracle cure for cancer. We just happen to have these brilliant micro-nuke weapons.

One annoying plot loophole. They lost half of their return trip food but only had half a crew so fine, but then the trip home takes several times the planned time.

This novel entertained me quiet well, first chapter to last. Unexpected small & large twists intertwined the plot with intrigue and kept me eagerly looking for the resolution to come. The science is good, the scientific explanations were enough with being over my head.
All in all, the book was a superlative sequel and a quite excellent ending for the story of Astronaut Adam Alston which began in Red Hope, (Which hopefully you will read first!)!
I enthusiastically look forward to reading the next out of this world, exceptional novel from Mr. John Dreese!

This review encompasses both Red Hope and Blue Hope. I found the premise of the story interesting and comfortably ths side of credible-of course it helps that I believe the possiblity of other life in the universe.

I very much enjoyed the fact that the author permitted his protagonist to be imperfect. Mankind is imperfect and heroic accomplishments are achieved through struggle while dealing with those imperfections.

This book is so imaginative and engaging I couldn’t put it down. You feel like you’re in every scene with the characters trying to find solutions and you will NEVER guess the ending. This is very well written and easy to read but like I said difficult to put down.

I don’t write reviews usually, in fact never before, but I just had to tell everyone that if you like wildly imaginative, fast paced and twisty turns in your books this is a must read!

Wow! Great sequel. Red hope started off somewhat slower then normal, Blue Hope was the throat punch that got your attention, Blue hope was a well written sequel that had explanations from Red hope twisted into the story like a well made braid. I took 24 hours to read both this books and couldn't put either down while reading. I am so hopping that there is a 3rd to close up some openings that Blue Hope left us.

While a clever story, it feels wild and improbable. There are multiple disasters and near death experiences for our protagonist Adam. The science behind many of the events is dubious at best. This is more of a fantasy story with predictable and frequent tragedies than it is a coherant believable story. And it is just like Book 1 : Red Hope

Quick and entertaining read. Enough science to be a true science fiction without being bogged down in overwhelming technical details. The characters were really a strong part of this story, no true good/evil characters but story lines built on humans with human flaws. Felt like the story was written by a new author, telling the reader how to feel instead of letting them experience it their self but overall enjoyable.

An interesting read. A trip to Mars, an alien lab in Africa and a return to the moon - an ambitious undertaking, to be sure. The two main characters are each flawed men, one dedicated, one bold. There are things about them I liked, and parts of their personalities I did not like. But, that makes them human. It's hard to believe that this two-book series is the first that John Dreese has written.

After having read Red Hope way back in 2016 I lost track of when this one was due to come out. It was a nice surprise when Unlimited suggested it and it took me only 4 days to finish. I found the technical solutions very realistic and believable and the character development is good. I did find however a few questions in the plot on why certain characters did certain actions (not going to spoil it as they aren't that major.) All in all it was an easy read and enjoyable.

It was a fun read. Although you don’t have to read the first (there first couple of chapters are recap) it adds to the enjoyment. The writer had fun with the story and kept me guessing. Although the motivations of some characters were a bit murky and underdevelopment (I am looking at you, Chris) the plot and other characters more than made up for it. Overall very, very enjoyable. Would definitely recommend and look forward to more books from this author.

I read both books in the series. The ideas and concepts are outstanding. Most of the characters are fleshed out ok. I enjoyed the trip.
If I could offer any criticism at all it would be that sometime I could see a plot point miles away.
It's better than I expected and I look forward to more from the author.
It would make a good series or movie.

Mr. Dreese writes very well but I found both books too long. The story moves too slowly because, in my opinion, there is too much unnecessary detail and explanation. I also found the ending of Red Hope wimpy. To me, Adam Alston is a non-hero. Still, for a first set of books, it was brave and creative, showing great potential.

I'm writing this to cover Red Hope and Blue Hope - Fandamntastic! I downloaded both books and read them cover to cover to cover to cover...I couldn't put them down and read them both in 1 1/2 days. I thought the character development was excellent, the plot wasn't reusable and having lived in North Texas most of my life, I knew exactly where everything was. Even if I hadn't lived there, I wasn't lost due to the author's attention to detail. Make sure you get both books so you can keep the same level of non-stop excitement going. Great fun, awesome read!

BLUE HOPE is the conclusion of the story started in RED HOPE, and it brings home the message that there will always be consequences for the things you do. Having long been a fan of Mars-exploration tales, I enjoyed RED HOPE and was pleased to be chosen to read the ARC version of its follow-up BLUE HOPE prior to publication. There is a tension all through the story as the characters face the repercussions of the events and it served well to drive me on to the end. I'm usually good at figuring out resolutions in the books I read before I get to the end, but this one managed to surprise me a few times. When a book can do that, it makes the finish a more satisfying read. Well done.

Nice continuity to Ted Hope!
Yup, still implausible, but that's scifi.
You will improve with more time to develop "plausible" story lines!
Congratulations on a fine story line.

The author is an excellent storyteller. There is always an exciting big picture and also nteresting individual character challenges and development. I thought this second book in the series was considerably better than the first book and I hope Mr Dreese continues to improve and write more fine fiction!

After reading the first book, RED HOPE, I was eager to get started on BLUE HOPE. However, I didn't enjoy BLUE as well. Maybe it had too much information about how the special rockets and space craft were built. Maybe because our Astronaut hero was not as likeable this time around. Maybe I'm just not a fan of Sci-Fi stories after all.

It was a good read and well done to the author - I like how the characters were flawed heroes etc. There was a lot of frustrations though - SPOILERS obviously.

- The first 25% of the book is just copy/paste from book 1. We didn't need it, it's not a stand alone novel.
- Adam starts buying Porches and mansions for seemingly no reason and does not discuss this with his wife?
- His wife and kids are almost murdered and his wife kills 3 intruders in cold blood with a shotgun but we hear nothing further about it. In fact Adam does note even talk to her face to face. Unbelievable.
- His wife whinges about them being bankrupt - she spends all the money on surgery. So Adam goes on a speaking tour where he is earning big dollars every night and his wife leaves him for it? It's 28 days to set them up for the rest of their lives. 1) she is ungrateful, 2) he is an idiot for not inviting her and the kids along in 5 star accommodation.
- Adam finds his wife in bed with Chris. Nothing happens, it is never spoken of again. Lets all live happily ever after.
- We finally meet the martians! Cool, we even have a translator - it could have been great but suddenly the martians want to eat him! Like what - it was just so left field and cheesy.

I read the first book and enjoyed it. I immediately began the second. I understood his reasoning about adding info from Red Hope for the sake of anyone who didn’t read it. There was a little too much of the 1st book. All in all, It was still a fun read and I recommend it for an entertaining read

I'm a fan of sci-fi and read enough good reviews to give this a chance. I was not disappointed. The story had plenty of action, humor, and drama to keep going. I finished the books faster than I thought I would. I actually looked forward to reading a little bit each night.

Read both books and enjoyed both! You must read Red Hope first to understand the second book. Thought everything that happened to Adam was a bit far fetched but a lot of books do have characters where awful things happen to them. Liked the ending of Blue Hope. Liked the wrap up.

Blue Hope does not disappoint! It was a wonderful sequel to Red Hope. The characters and situations are believable and well rounded. There is plenty of action to go along with the twists and turns in the plot. If you didn't have the pleasure of reading Red Hope, of course there's still time! But you can read Blue Hope as a stand alone and still follow what is happening with a liberal weaving in of previous events. Still...why miss out? Read them both! Great job, John Dreese!

Awesome follow up to Red Hope. A new twist on aliens and artifacts, the story carries on from the first book with the focus on finding a way to make the aliens cancer cure. I'm sure a lot of the technical stuff probably would not stand up to scrutiny but it's still a fun and entertaining read.

Like many of the stories I've read with Kindle Unlimited, there's often a good story in the book
It's just how it's crafted together that makes a story really good or just another tale
This one falls in between
It just seemed all of a rush, no time to develop characters and lots of dubious actions and reactions. It's more a Boy's Own style of story rather than a fully developed Michael Creighton or Tom Clancy story
I find often the best books have a blend of information sometimes technical plus good characters with their flaws and personal agendas, the way the author blends them together to weave his story makes or breaks it
This one was lacking those next few steps of possibly research and human interaction
Everything was rushing by things just fell into people's laps or folks were willing to believe the worst about a person after knowing someone's best, some action scenes were barely believable and people had no emotional reactions afterwards. It's an OK read but lacks conviction and believeability in many areas.

I had a lot of fun reading this book. I like the main premise. I will say that I was wanting more detail in some places (some of the scientific explanations etc) and a little less detail with some of the more mundane parts of the story. A good storyline. I would like to see the author put more effort into the details ie Blue cure can only be made in low gravity, why not use a centrifuge in low earth orbit? I liked the AC130 part but more technical details of its operation would have been nice. Btw the gattling gun is not the first gun of choice for the gunship. It's the little details that hold readers attention. Blue Hope really was an improvement in the authors writing... keep going!

An extremely complex series of events in the life of the central character Capt. This was a decent premise, but it REALLY needs to be flushed out. Much of the dialog is very juvenile and many major issues are introduced and then left dangling. Its almost like the author never actually re-read what he wrote. I could never figure out who to like and who to dislike.

Also many very unrealistic situations. I would not recommend.

I was hooked once I started and never wanted to put the book down. Like the first book of this series the pace of the story was spot on. I enjoyed it very much until the end and that is only because I reached the end. Hope this author continues writing and has other books soon.

An interesting and entertaining story. Unfortunately there were several side trips that just weren't necessary for the plot. As the book progressed it became harder and harder to take the story seriously. I think if the two books were combined and shortened, eliminating the more preposterous and unnecessary stuff, the end product might be improved.

I read this book with my Kindle unlimited subscription and it was an okay read, not great, but not bad either. After re-reading Red Hope then Blue Hope right after, I would say it was an average sci-fi novel, not anything I would go out of my way to recommend. I like the idea behind it and the direction it ultimately went, but the characters themselves could have fleshed out a lot more. They seemed very shallow, superficial, and unrelatable. The way some of the characters are portrayed just comes off as really unrealistic.Chris Tankovitch in particular. My goodness, that character almost made me stop reading the book.

Everything just seemed so...convenient. I will say that it seems like much more thought is given to Blue Hope than Red Hope. The story feels much more developed and congruent than the first. Red Hope felt rushed, and while certain aspects of Blue Hope feel rushed, it is far better. Though there seemed to be odd digs at "One percenters" yet a desire in the main character to be one in the beginning. It was strange.

Red Hope and Blue hope are truly engaging. John Dreese knocks it out of the park with this realistic and fast paced adventure series. A real page turner that keeps the reader waning more. Highly recommended!

Both books were excellent. A story about Mars and moon missions mixed with intrigue, suspense and a great ending saving mankind. What is not to like? Well, for one thing it keeps you up late reading. Great job, John. Thanks.

Red hope and blue hope, excellent story and writing. I love science fiction but I get tired of cowboys in space. These books are original and well thought out story lines. Best of what science fiction should be!

great read, loved the storyline and the ending, I was surprised tv's the Martian was trying to eat Adam but I guess I would be hungry too after 10,000 years.
I'll be looking for more stories from you.

I read Red Hope and this book 2, Blue Hope. Enjoyable read with decent character development . My wish is it would have been a longer series of books than just two but it was a fun few hours to finish both books.

Didn't even finish this - just kept flipping pages. And Red Hope was a pain to finish too. Something about this story didn't feel "true" and I often found the dialog between characters stilted and contrived. Here is is just a week after finishing the book and I can't even recall a single character's name.

Both books in the series were very entertaining. I found myself caught up in the characters mindset. The twist and turns kept me waiting in anticipation. Looking for a third book with stories of Adam and the cure for cancer.

I enjoyed both books, "Red and Blue". It did seem that a lot of book one was repeated in the second, but that didn't make it any less interesting. The one chapter with the defrosted creatures was a little over the top but overall I thought both books were very good and I highly recommend them. Thank you for a good read.

An okay read, but while the basic premise behind this series is interesting, and this second book is better written than the first volume in the series, it still includes too many stretches of the imagination to achieve believability.

Not a horrible story, but not a well planned book either, to many missing or wrong details. Book should have been centered mainly on Mars and all things Martian but the other stories in the book just didn’t work, very disappointed.

interesting premise, so I stuck through both books to see where it would go-overall only adequately developed, lead character a bit too flawed, shallow and frankly too intellectually challenged to be believable as an astronaut, and remaining characters all seemed too lacking in depth and believability as well-glad I did not pay for this
Please RateBlue Hope: (Book 2) (Red Hope)
