I first read Highland Velvet when it was published in 1982 and fell in love with it. To this day, it is still one of my two favorite historical romances. I found Velvet Promise at a book store later and realized that it was the first in the "Velvet" series. I eventually bought and read all 4 books in the series. The 4 Montgomery brothers and their lovely sister are a wonderful family.

I own almost all of Jude Deveraux's books, but these are my favorites. Personally, I stopped enjoying her books as much when she started telling stories in the present. I think Jude was a much better teller of stories about the past, whether it was in England and Scotland of old, or the wilds of the "Americas". Those books I read over and over again. Her characters are always strong and the love true. All of her books are worth reading at least once.

If you ever see "Highland Velvet", you must read it. It is a great love story, but it also shows the strength of family and friendship and trust.

I've always loved reading Jude Deveraux. This book took a strong female Scottish Laird, Bronwyn, and paired her with an opinionated, English Lord, Stephen. She was used to leading her men and them following her without question. He thought he would lead the Scots and teach them the English ways - which of course did not work. The relationship between Bronwyn and Stephen was rocky almost from start to finish - both not trusting each other and both not understanding why the other would not let the other be the leader. A great read that I would highly recommend.

Highland Velvet is Jude Deveraux's second book in the 'Velvet' series. The story is revolved around the relationship between Bronwyn MacArran; a proud Scottish lair, and Stephen Montgomery; an Englishmen.

The first time I read this book, I despised it with a passion. Stephen's insecurity and lack of respect toward Bronwyn made it difficult for me to finish the book. I reread through the book recently and grew to appreciate Stephen.

Bronwyn's constant negative attitude at Stephen is too overbearing in certain scenes and she often lets her pride get the best of her, but she is a very selfless laird who only wants the best for her clan.

Meanwhile, Stephen begins as a very narrow-minded character, but as the story progresses, he changes himself to please Bronwyn.

I will not spoil the story for you, but I definitely recommend reading this book after 'Velvet Promise'.

Historical romance of the 80s when it captured the interest of devoted readers. HIGHLAND VELVET by Jude Deveraux is one of the originals and the reading is still good in the 21st century.
Stephen Montgomery invades Scotland to conquer, but his love for the proud and disdainful Bronwyn MacCarran binds him to her land forever.

I'll be brief since there are some longer summaries below. I didn't discover Jude Deveraux until recently and I am still getting used to her writing style. The first 2/3 of this book is very good - 5 stars, but the last 1/3 gets bogged down with some superfluous characters and redundant storyline. I liked Bronwyn - very strong and passionate (and for once a tall, dark haired heroine!). There was good chemistry between Stephen and Bronwyn when they weren't fighting! This one was more satisfying to me than Velvet Promise, the 1st in the series.

I have read every book written by Deveraux. I love her historical romance novels. This book is part of a series written back in the 1990's. I love all of them however this one was more lighthearted. I loved the characters and the way she brings them to life. It is 2013 and when a can't find any romances to read this book is pulled out and reread. All of her books are great reads. I highly recommend this.

2nd book in the Velvet Series. I love Stephen and Bronwyn, both stubborn in their own ways, afraid to admit they love each other... Love the story from beginning to end,and i like it how all the Montgomery's are involved in every book of this series, how they care about each other, helping one another if the other is in trouble... and i love it how Stephen an englishman, embraced being a Scot,to be with her and even taking her name,to be a scotman through and through, for her love...i hope i can find love like that, find a man with the Montgomery qualities, WHY CAN'T LOVE BE LIKE THAT,LIKE IN THE OLD DAYS ?!!!

What happens when the King of England orders one of his knights to marry a Scottish clan leader. She hates the English because they killed her father. He is just bitter because he has been ordered to marry. You will love the story

Steven went to Scotland to conquer the people he married into , but found homself conquered bt Bronwyn. Jude brings everything to life. The secondary chachters are wonderful. I like the way she brings members of his family into the plot without giving to much away about them. When you read their stories you find that the information she gives you about them whets your appetite for them. Jude is a magnificent writer and I am always on the lookout for any new books she writes. Keep up the good work Jude.

Bronwyn was the only person strong enough in her family to be a truly selfless leader for her clan. Her brother was too self centered to lead, so her father did what was unthinkable, he made her leader. Bronwyn so loved her clan, her "family", that she was willing to give up her life to some hated Englishman so that there would be peace. Bronwyn may appear selfish, especially in how long it takes her to admit to loving Stephen, but look at her background, and you too will love her.

At the age of 15 I starting reading Jude Deveraux's books. My first was The Conquest. I not only love her books, I love her men. After I read a few, I got upset when she wrote about other families then my beloved Montgomery men. I couldn't get enough off Gavin, Raine, Stephen, and Miles. After reading Sweet Liar, I changed my mind. "...I wouldn't mind having an affair with a Montgomery but I'd rather marry a Taggert" Samantha, Sweet Liar

Bronwyn was selfish and annoying, and at some points I really wanted to slap her. That being said, however, I hated Stephen too.
Everyone keeps writing about his pride and how he was too good for her, but hey, he wasn't prince charming either. In my opinion, any guy who can raise a hand against a woman is a creep. I don't care if he seems nice and sweet and caring, he's still a creep. The fact that he SPANKED her as if she were a child just shows that he has no respect for her and thinks of himself as better than her, just cause she's a woman. Later, when she angers him, he again threatens to spank her, in front of all her men!!! ooo yah, he was really considerate of her pride...
Anyway, the only book in the velvet series in which the man does not feel the need to put his wife "in her place" is Velvet Angel. It is terribly sweet and a great redemption for an absolutely AWFUL series of books. Don't get me wrong, some of the books are greatly written, it's just that spankings and rape and men hitting their wives to the floor tend to make me hate the hero, even if it is just a small part or the book.

Yes, this book would have been captivating if not for the irritating heroine, Bronwyn. The plot was strong and intriguing. The family circumstances were heart warming. The hero was to die for, until he lost his heart and his head in the process. I was turned off by his weakness towards the end. Brownyn really ruined this book for me. I didn't even want to finish this bec. i keep getting this annoyed feelings everytime i read her name and her actions. But i forced myself to read through, only because i want to know what happend to Judith and Gavin of Velvet Promise, I also want to read about the rest of the Montgomery brothers. I scanned-read the pages of this one until the end. I pretend not to see "her" name. Bronwyn isn't worth to be a Montgomery wife. She doesn't even deserve the villain. She is better off alone and shrivelled. YUCK. I really hate her. Her character is definitely like a large LUMP that is hard to swallow and is better off spitted out since it's of no importance anyway. Like one reviewer who also wasn't drawn to the heroine, SKIP THIS ONE. I agree, you won't miss a thing.

I started reading Jude Deveraux a year ago and have since read everyone of her books. I have yet to find a bad one. The Velvet collection was what got me hooked. I have also turned many friends and family onto Jude Deveraux and they all say the same thing. If you want to try a new author give her a try you wont be disappointed

This is the story of the the Second Montgomery brother Steven and Jude brings the story of the family to life, with great secondary characters. But the Romance between Steven and Bronwyn was a disappiontment, in the end I felt Steven deserved better, and Bronwyn deserved the Chartworth Name (the Villian of the story) rather than the Montgomery Name. Steven was kind and giving, but Bronwyn was just plain selfish.

After reading the mixed reviews of this book here in the store, I decided to see for myself. I think this is a "love it or hate it" book and unfortunately, i hated it. The hero is too soft, heroine is too strong. Their relationship is based mostly on stephens lust and bronwyns pride. There is a lot of arguing, throwing insults and fighting physically, which I'll add is more of the heroines doing. Concessions/bargaining is mostly given by the hero. This goes on and on and on... and sounded old and irritating in the end. There's very little romance between them, let alone love. Makes one wonder how they came about that feeling in the end. I will read the rest of the velvet series but I am hoping that the plot and the characters are unlike this one.

Stephen and Bronwyn what a couple and Bronwyn what a spitfire she had fire in her belly. I Like the second story in the Montgomery saga. This book is an oldie but goodie for me I read it when I Was younger and reading it today I still liked it. This book was issue in 1982 and some books read today does not have the same effect on me. In all it was good action pack nice with some romance thrown in.

For those of us who were slow into reading romance novels to begin with, (myself included...), this is a rare find and by far, my favorite of all her books (yes, even more so than the first one I read, Knight in Shining Armor). JD puts onto paper what I would hope my female ancestors would have been like, as my family hails from Scotland. Bronwyn does everything with PASSION - she hates with passion, she loves with passion - every move about her is a passionate one. I think that's why I love her the best. Nothing is done without it - passion is something we all need in our lives...and JD also puts that passion in Stephen. Life is too short to live dispassionately...and JD has taught us that through Bronwyn and Stephen.

"Highland Velvet" is the second in the 'Velvet' series.
Stephen Montgomery is Gavin's younger brother. Due to the events at the Queen's court in "The Velvet Promise", Stephen is late for his own wedding to a Scottish Highlander that hates englishmen...in fact he's three days late!
Stephen rides hide to the Scottish MacCarran castle. He found her the head of her clan. He found he was captivated by her beauty. She found she hated his English blood more for being late for HER wedding, leaving her sitting her wedding dress for 3 days.
Through blood-shed, deceit, false friendships with the enemy and cold Scottish Highland nights their love burned bright. But Stephen's scottish bride doesn't give in without fighting all the way!

If you like historical romances, this is the one for you. If you like storylines that can continue from book to book, this is the one for you.
This is the second story in the saga of the Montgomery brothers and their search for love everlasting (whether they realize it or not). If you have'nt read the first book THE VELVET PROMISE, don't worry after this one you will.
The characters of Bronwyn and Stephen are wonderful. It is nice to read a historical romance where the women are so strong and the men come to rely on them heavily for their wit and knowledge.
A must read for any fan of historical romances set in the time of the Scottish Clans.

Highland Velvet was the first Jude Deveraux book I read, and I was hooked from the beginning. I have now read nearly every one of her books, but Highland Velvet remains my favorite. Deveraux has given us such a strong and likeable character in Bronwyn, and Steven is the hero of any womans dreams. This story is full of love, laughter and action and guaranteed to be a page turner with anyone who loves well written romance.

Stephen and Bronwyn were great, the author really lets you get to know the Montgomery family on a personal level. I have read all of the Velvet sereis and have just discovered more on the Montgomery family. If someone could email me with the correct order i intend on reading the entire saga.
