Fire in the Hole: Stories

Great series of stories. The short story is still alive and its a pleasure to get a collection from one of your favorite authors. This has only one drawback....once you finish you are bummed that its over. Great reading for any damn time at all!

Great dialogue and characters. Narrative style is unique and a pleasure to read even though he uses a lot of progressive verbs in his description, which at first served as something of a speed bump in the reading, but later became an expected stylistic choice.

Im becoming a short story fan from collections such as these and Stephen Kings. Different genres but I like the strong writing of a short story and that I can get through one in a quick plane ride, etc.

Leonard gives life to amazing, earthy, quirky characters, and he packs as much punch into his short stories as he does into his novels. Maybe even more so, because they're so tightly written. Not a word wasted, so they make maximum impact.
