A nice study of motivations and courage to do what is required and right in the face of serious, life-changing consequences. The text is simple, but the layering is complex. Nice character development.

You would think a story about two girls being locked in a tower would get boring but it never did. I loved Dashti and her ever changing relationship with Saren and her attitude towards gentry. I also adored Tegus because he was like a real person not a fairytale Prince. The book was definitely worth my time and money.

I downloaded this book to my Kindle yesterday and finished it a few minutes ago. Absorbing, exciting, touching--I love Shannon Hale's writing and her take on traditional fairy tales. The novel's setting is based somewhat on ancient Mongolia, but the tale is taken from a Grimm's fairy tale, which I sort of remembered from my childhood/teen years. Dashti, a "mucker" girl from the steppes, becomes a lady's maid, but the lady in question is sentenced to live in a dark tower for 7 years for disobeying her father. Dashti goes along with her, and this tale is about their survival and escape into a new world and way of living for both of them. And for .99 cents, this was a terrific piece of entertainment for a great value. I highly recommend it.

So so lovely. I love the main character completely and I love that while we have some villians and some heros, not everything is exactly black and white. And I loved how despite being a fairly PG-13 rated tale, it did acknowledge the uneven dynamic between lower/upper classes and women/men. A really satisfying read.

I bought the kindle edition and it is totally out of order! The end of the book is halfway through then it skips back to the tower and then jumps forward to the kitchens.

I am very confused and disappointed because the book itself is a hypnotic, wonderful work of art.

Whoever edited this should be ashamed of themselves.

This book has the ratings for five stars because of the amazing adventure in it, I loved how Dashti (the mucker maid) told her true feelings and gave detail as if you were really there. I recommend this book to people who love “journal“ books with adventure and some romance.

The story line is fairly interesting, though it is not as good as some of the author's other works. My biggest problem with it are the errors. In almost every word that has a 'w' in the middle or at the end, the 'w' is turned into 've': "low" is written as "love", "own" is written as "oven", "show" is written as "shove"...etc. Also, more often than not, "I'll" is written a "111". These errors are extremely frustrating as at least one occurs seemingly on every page. The errors are distracting and break the flow of the story as the reader has to determine which word was intended.
