A fabulous read, writer Ann Rule takes us from crime to resolution in a fast-paced story that is almost impossible to put down. If you enjoy non fiction crime stories, "Small Sacrifices" is the gold standard of this genre. It is definitely a must-read.

As a mother, I just don't understand. This mother only gave birth to these children...she didn't mother them. They were only decorations...that is, until they became obstacles. This woman was simply crazy within her world that centered around herself. There is no understanding of her decisions, her actions...none.

This book is powerful, scary, and shocking all at the same time. What is truly amazing and inspirational about this book I that the two surviving children were (a) taking in by the prosecutor, who tried this case, and his wife and (b) that the children went on to living good, happy, and loving lives.

This searching analysis of the shooting of three children in Oregon by their mother devolves into a study of personality. In May of 1983, Diane Downs drove to a Williamette Valley hospital emergency room with her children, all gravely wounded; one did not survive the first hour, and the other two were disabled for life. Downs initially told of a "bushy-haired stranger" who had committed the crime, but frequently changed her story. Under police questioning she recalled her childhood with a cold, domineering father who abused her sexually, her weak mother, a rape by one of her bosses, her failed marriage and many men with whom she had sex. One of these men, whom she claimed to love, did not want children, and that may have prompted the crime, speculates the author.

I've read everything Ann Rule has ever written and I must say that in my opinion, this is one of her very best. As always, it is very well written and extremely well researched, and again as always, impossible to put down!!

Another great book by Ann Rule. I found this book about Diane Downs very informative and about the murder and attempted murder of her children, the trial and conviction. Also about the surviving children Danny & Christie's new life with people who really love them.

I thought this was a fictional story until I started reading it. I then realized it was a fascinating accounting of an actual case. I found it so interesting to follow the effort put into preparing for bringing this case to trial and obtaining a conviction. I also enjoyed the characters who played a part in this whole story.
