'Fates Divided' is the first novel in the 'Halven Rising' series by Jules Barnard and I really didn't want to put it down. I even tried to stay awake all night just to keep reading this fantastic story. I absolutely loved it.

Soul mates, college students and, unknown to them, Halven, 18 year old Elena Morales and 20 year Derek O'Brien are neighbours who meet for the first time on Elena's 18th Birthday, although Derek has been watching Elena for a couple of months. She's in desperate need of a lab to work in and her room-mate and new best friend Reese suggests she talk to the science geek next door. Both are brilliant Chemistry majors who have different 'problems' that they think make them freaks, but are told by some pretty cold blooded Fae that they a Halven, half Fae, half human abominations, but they have talents which are needed and they're blackmailed into creating a cure for a manufactured virus which is attacking the Fae ability to heal and cutting their normally immortal life-spans down to a week.

I'm not going to give any spoilers, but this wonderful story of growing love and trust is full of twists, turns and surprises. Set amidst the supernatural version of a war of the worlds, where the pure Fae are pitted against the Halven in a battle to take control of all the Fae kingdoms. There's a lot of action and prejudice in this fantastic story, as well as the paranormal romance with the growing relationship between Derek and Elena. Even though the book ends with the kidnapped Reese still being held captive by the Halven that escaped, it has a happy for now ending and is worth a lot more than the 5 star maximum rating that is allowed. I really can't wait for the next one.

I enjoyed the story, it was interesting. I felt like the characters could have been a bit more developed and there were some tropes that were over-used to progress the story forward. I did not like the ending because it was very rushed in order to make it complete. I felt like it could have been flushed out more with another chapter or two and would have been a lot more satisfying.

With all that being said, I am interested in the other books in the series. My hope is that some of the problems from the first book will not be present in the remaining books.

A well written story about finding the secrets in our families that can come out and upend our lives especially when we are not aware of them. Follow Elena and Derek as they have to deal with their emerging abilities, the hot chemistry between them and of course the Fae who believe that Elena's untutored powers have the ability to save them even though they look down on halven and humans. Get your copy and follow these two as they traverse, campus life, their growing attraction, family secrets, the fae. Enjoy, I did! My voluntary and honest review of an ARC!

I love reading about different Author views of the paranormal. This story was no exception. I found the story to be a bit long winded and boring until about half way through. Maybe because they were secluded in Emain and not any actual action. I would have also liked to see how the Fae actually got to the point they were. But, I stuck with it and really enjoyed it once I felt it got going. I am interested in finding out what happens next. It has a great overall plot and unforgettable characters!

I was gifted an ARC in return of an honest review.

The cover of this book drew my attention at first and then I read the book synopsis and I thought it would be something that would interest me. I haven’t been reading a lot of science fiction books and it was nice to read one again. Like all YA books, this was a very easy read and I was able to read it in a couple of days. Fae’s are new to me and I am certain that I haven’t read a book about them before; it’s always interesting to see a magical world.

There’s a lot going on in this book from Elena learning she has powers and learning that her mother is Fae to the whole Fae race being killed off by a disease. The first half was a little slow moving, but as the book went on the better it got! Derek and Elena were great characters and I would love to read more about them.

I can not wair for the next book to come out to see what is going to happen to Elena, Derek and the rest of the Fae race!

Starting her 18th birthday nearly exploding chemicals in a lab is not what Elena had in mind for celebrating, but coming up with a logical reason for what is happening to is just not gonna happen. So what about when a totally crazy reason is presented to her? Can she believe it and they want her to do WHAT? This has gotten......complicated and that's not including her neighbor who also seems to have a few secrets of his own.

Derek was trying to keep a low profile, but that is blown away when he and Elena start working together, and then there's what they've been tasked to do. Because the fate of a world is exactly what he wanted on his shoulders.

Elena is headstrong, but smart she knows when to accept things and when to push and ask questions. Her youth comes out in some ways, but in others you see just how mature she really is.

Derek is tough on the outside but inside he's a big teddy bear. He sees problems before most and figures out what needs to be done. He is also insecure at times and doesn't know how to act or when to just accept something for the way it is.

This story brings you into a new world where magic is real and extraordinary things are possible. There are a few twists that keep you guessing and the storyline draws you in and you never know what could happen next! Interesting start to a new series and while I wish there would have been a bit more to the story at the end I excited to see where it goes next!

I voluntarily read an arc of this book for an honest review. This is a really interesting book. Elena is having a really bad day, she just turned 18 and she boiled water...without any kind of heating element. Derek is a Chem Major and Elena needs his lab to try and figure out why she can perform this trick without trying. Enter the fae, who force Elena and Derek to help them with a virus or suffer the consequences. I really loved how this story unfolded. It’s different than the norm and Derek and Elena have great chemistry. Read this great book!

The first time I read this blurb, I knew I HAD to read it because I have always enjoyed reading books about the Fae. This book was a little different and ventured from the beaten path of the Fae lore we most commonly know, but that just made it better!! We begin reading Fates Divided with a young college girl named Elena who is used to being discriminated against with her partial Latina background. She goes to Dawson where she discovers something new about herself on her 18th birthday. Derek and Elena share a common interest, their major. When Elena comes to Derek for some help, that's when things go haywire. The Fae come out of nowhere trying to make a deal with the pair for their help; however, the Fae don't like needing help. The Fae are dying, and only Derek and Elena, who are only part Fae, can save them. From there things get interesting. Their plight is not a simple or easy one. They go though many trials, but can they come out unscathed? The ending was a little aggravating because it didn't tie up some major loose ends, but I expect those to be secured in the coming books. I really loved Derek and Elena's connection and can't wait to read more about them!

Elena and Derek have no clue who or what they truly are at the beginning of the book. They know their different, but have no clue why. Once they learn the truth, their lives take on a path they never expected and they have to fight for the lives of their family and friends, as well as their own. The chemistry between these two is off the charts, but their differences have people fighting to keep them apart as well. I cannot wait to read more of this series and find out what happens! I’m voluntarily reviewing an advanced reader copy of this book.

Feedback for "Fates Divided"

I found the premise of the story believable and enjoyed reading it. I would have liked some of the characters to disclose some of their past to show why they made the choices they did and why they treated Elena and Derek with disdain, especially since Elena and Derek were risking their lives to find a cure for the Fae's disease.

I liked seeing the relationship between Elena and Derek grow into such a special relationship. The love scenes seemed a little explicit for a young adult to read but I'm 63 years old and so my ideas of morality are probably antiquated.

The Fae seemed very cold without much character. It would have been nice to see more personality. I'm hoping the next book will show more emotions from them. The idea that Elena was forced to help them because they would harm her family if she didn't I found cold-hearted. With all the dangers Elena and Derek went through to find the cure they were still treated with contempt. I would have expected the Fae to finally show some gratitude towards Elena and Derek and make them feel closer to the Fae half of their DNA.

I recommend reading this book as I believe you will find a lot of enjoyment from it. I'm looking forward to the second book to see how some of the issues that were not resolved in book one resolved. I'm sure there will be many more dangerous adventures to follow in the second book.

This is the first book in the Halven Rising series and is a great read! Elena has worked very hard to get where she's at in her life, especially when it comes to school. She's studying to become a doctor and everything's going along smoothly until her eighteenth birthday. She boils water in her lab class with her bare hands. Elena has no idea what is going on and seeks the help of her moody neighbor in order to try and figure out what's happening. Before she knows it Elena is pulled into a world she doesn't understand and has been placed in charge of saving an entire species from a deadly virus. No pressure or anything. The dark and moody neighbor Derek isn't anything like he first seemed to be and ends up being there for Elena when everything else is falling apart all around her. I immediately fell in love with Derek and love how protective of Elena he is. My heart went out to Elena and I can't even begin to imagine what it must have been like to have everything she knew ripped out from underneath her. I admired how resilient she was in the face of everything going on and respected her strength and courage. I highly recommend this book to anyone and I plan to read much more by this author. A wonderfully fun and exciting paranormal read with fae and magic. The Fae are in danger now susceptible to a deadly disease and they belief a half-breed fae, Elena, can save them. Elena needs the help of her chemist neighbor, Derek, to help her help the fae, but Derek has secrets that could prevent him from helping Elena. As they spend time together though sparks fly and their attraction is undeniable, but will they help each other or will the whole thing go up in flames?

I received a free copy to review and, OMG!, thank God I did not pass this one out! I'm not a fan of YA but this book was awesome. The characters well develop and I did not heated the heroin. My favorite was how deep the connection between the couple was and that it reassures you often of it. Also love how well the story develops, like it takes it time to grow so you understand what's happening , make connections and feel part of it and don't rush over the plot, finaly it ends sooo good but leaves room for new plots to continue as a series. The book made me laugh and kept me on edge and I can wait to read the next one.

I give this two thumbs up. I loved it. I've already added all of the other books to my must read list. I can't wait. I almost feel a loss at finishing the book because I hope the next story sticks to the main two characters. Usually they move on to another angle of a story and another character. I loved Elena and Derek. I want to know more about Elena and her mother.

This my first paranormal read from Jules Barnard and she does not disappoint. Great story line
Elena's family has been threatened and if she does not come up with a cure to stop a deadly virus that is set to wipe out the Fae population they will pay!!! Derek her next door neighbor has secrets but he is will to help Elena find a cure. As they get closer to a cure Elenas powers come to light and Derek's secrets come out and they find themselves falling for each other but will the secrets keep them apart or bring them closer? Awesome secondary characters. Sweet romance.

I absolutely loved reading this story. Elena and Derek are perfect for each other even if they don’t know it yet. They find out that Fae are real and hey happen to be Halven. Soon we are taken along for a wild ride as these two try to their their kind. Along the way they end up falling madly and deeply in love. But will there be anything standing in the way of their happiness? I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Elena has always known what she wanted to be when she grew up. Her family helped her realize her dreams as best they could. While Elena is away at Dawson working towards her degree in the sciences strange things start to happen to her. How does one explain how liquids boil over without any heat being applied to them? Thinking herself going insane Elena does what any sane person would, try to disprove that these odd things happened. When her roommate tells her to ask Derek their sexy as sin neighbor for use of his lab Elena gets more than she bargained for. What would you do if presented with the unimaginable? How would you respond to learning that not only are you not entirely human but that another race is depending on you to save them from extinction? Derek and Elena make a marvelous team. While trying to save the Fae they gain something in each other that is priceless and beautiful. Who will win in the end the evil half fae trying to destroy the Fae or Elena and Derek?

Wow, this was REALLY good. It reminded me a lot of one of my favorite series, The Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa, but wasn't too similar that I felt like was rereading anything.

Elena and Derek were great characters with AWESOME Fae abilities. The plot was exciting, the romance was HOT and the world building was magical. Emain was interesting, New Kingdom sounded cool, Old Kingdom sounded medieval and Sunland was where I'd long to be. :)

Keen was also a fun character, as was Deirdre and the Fae are just exciting to begin with.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and am excited for the rest of the series.

4.5 stars.

The first in a new series of Y.A. fantasy romance.
Elena is a chemistry student, she has just had her 18th birthday. Something strange is happening, she seems to be affecting the things around her. To safely investigate she needs access to a lab without her teachers finding out.
Derek is Elena's neighbour and can use a lab, but he demands to stay with her. What is happening to Elena is due to the Fae blood she unknowingly carries.
Her powers have come to the attention of the Fae, who are under attack from a virus. They believe Elena can find a cure. But in typical Fae manner they threaten, bully and then force her to help. Derek is also one of the so called Halven, part Fae and part human. His powers are totally different from hers, but it makes him an ideal bodyguard.
Their adventures in the realms they knew nothing about pull them closer together.
A clean, fun fantasy suitable for teenagers and upwards. Plenty of magical danger and very amusing ways of travel.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Jules is an excellent author that keeps the reader captivated. I especially like the books covering this genre and Jules did an incredible job with it showing the "Halvens" in another light that I really enjoyed.

The book has a great pace, which is very important to me. It has a good amount of unexpected twists which keeps the readers guessing. Fates Divided is rather action packed and well executed.

The characters are an intriguing mix that work well together. Elena is a well rounded character who I really enjoyed as the heroin in this book, always true to herself and always willing to help. Derek is my other favorite character and complements Elena well.

I can't wait for the next one to come out in this series and will definitely be reading those.

What makes a great book for me is when I become so engrossed in a story I can visualize the scenario I am reading. The wonderful details in this book allowed my mind to visualize the Fae realm. The author is very cleaver in the way she integrates the background of the realm and the unique abilities of the characters involved into her storyline.
Elana and Derek are likeable characters and you can't help rooting for them. There are also a number of interesting supporting characters that I look forward to getting to know in the next book of the series.

First, this book is different then what I read but I can't say I didn't enjoy it. This is a fantasy type book and it was good. The author keeps you focused and you don't lose track of what happens in the book.

What would you do if you found out you were different then others? What if you new that you had a chance to save others? This book will take you on a journey and answer those questions. You'll learn about different "fates" in the world and what happens on each side.

Derek & Elena learn a lot about who they are and they come together to help out the fates. The characters end up being closer then they expected but love can not be denied. With everything they learn, they are able to progress in the journey even if they are Halven's.

Great job to the author.

While trying to find a reason for her new totally not cool power she is thrown into a world she never thought existed. Her neighbor Derek also had some unusual abilities and together they try to find an answers for what they really are. They each face their own struggles but seems to always find a way back to each other. They form a bond so strong that no one can break it. It ended on a somewhat twist that still has my mind going over and over. The characters strong willed and seem out going when faced with huge problems. The easy banter they all have halven and fae are really comical. It's a 1 person story read but you do get to be in the mid of Derek sometimes. The Fae this time around are really different then reading them from a different story just to get the feel on how this author sees them is really sweet. The amount of details is truly amazing the scientific and all around details are wonderful and make this story really pop and come to life. It's a MUST READ paranormal romance that is bound to blow you away.

Though tall and insanely beautiful, Fae are not the angels they appear.

Suddenly susceptible to a deadly disease, the Fae believe Elena--a mere half-breed--can cure them. And they'll harm the last of Elena's loved ones unless she uses the ability she inherited from a mother she never knew.

Her only shot at pulling that off? Enlisting the help of her brooding, though brilliant, chemist neighbor Derek, who also may be a half breed like Elena.

This book was pretty good. I can't wait for the next one.

Jules Barnard has given us a truly wonderful beginning to a YA paranormal series with this book. With great writing she brings the fantasy world to life. The story did have parts that seemed to drag a little and it took me a bit to understand all the new terminology (Fae, Halvens etc,) but once that all clicked into place the story moved along.
The romance that develops between Elena and Derek is sweet and while not the main focus of the book it definitely adds to the story.

If you love paranormal, this is a good one. I recommend it.

Elena just turned 18 and has had no problems with school until today, when her chemistry experiment goes astray. No she can boil liquids by just thinking about it. The story had a great message about prejudice of being half human and half fae which could be related to our world today for YA readers. Elena is thrown into a realm she didn't know existed. At first the story was a bit slow, the character were captivating but lack some hook until the middle to the end of the book. I liked the main character loved to cook. Too many girls now a days don't even know how to boil water and have no desire to cook which is sad. I wish the story was more focused in the fae realm but I guess that's what we will get in book 2.

I voluntarily reviewed this book after receiving a free copy. I found this book so very intriguing. Such a different story that it pulls you in and makes you want to see what is going to happen next. Not your typical romance story!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Usually if a book is listed as paranormal, I go the other way, not with this one. I also won't read a long and detailed review that gives most of the book away. Why read when you know what is going to happen.

Fates Divided was an exciting read. This novel was full of suprises and twists. This novel was hard to put down, because you wanted to get to the end to find out what happened. You won't be disappointed with this one.

An enjoyable start to a new series with likeable characters and enough twists to keep my attention. I'll be interested to see where the next book takes the story. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

I love Jules Barnard but it took me a long time to get through this book. The beginning started out really good but I lost interest about halfway through. I hate not finishing a book so I pushed through and was glad I did as the ending was pretty good. It was just so hard to get through the middle of the book

I enjoyed reading this story. It was a completely different genre than I am used to from Jules and she did a fantastic job executing this new series.

It was full of action, drama, excitement and emotion. Jules knows how to write relate able characters..she knows how to keep you interested and engrossed in the story. I can't wait to find out what happens next in this series!!

***I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.*** Interesting story. Elena and Derek had a lot thrown at them. Think I want to see where the overreaching plot leads in the next book.

I loved this book!!! It has a lot good twists in it and some of the bad guys you dont see coming!!! And i love that fact the lead girl is half latino, and science geek smart!!! Most authors would put their lead girl the same old same old. Blond, blue eyes, and not curvy!!!! I give this book five stars cause its totally worth it!!! Thanks, Jeannine

This story was so interesting! It's been while since I've read a fantasy/paranormal, and Jules Barnard does a great job engaging me in the story. I am definitely anticipating the follow up, Fates Entwined. I purchased the book and the audio and while I'm kind of picky when it comes to narrators I thought the narrator did a supurb job!

This was a great beginning to a new series.
After reading the prologue book, I was left wondering what would happen to the characters—and their daughter.
This book expands upon the plot and setting of the prologue book, fleshing out the characters even more, and taking the reader on a whirlwind fae-ry tale.

I found this book to be a fascinating story. It had just enough twists to keep you engaged without ever losing focus and while there's a great romance in the story, it isn't such a main focus that the story line seemed forced around the relationship. I cant wait to buy the rest of the series and continue with these great characters.

A great fantasy and "real" world story blended into a adventure filled Romance that I did not want to put down. YA with a few mature themes but it was refreshing to read a new take on elves and half fae or halvens. Happy reading.
