Dame Sheldrick has had an amazing life, no doubt. However, being a patron of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and an elephant fosterer, I was looking forward to a story about her relationship with elephants and how she hit on the formula that finally enabled her to keep these precious orphans alive. That and pretty much everything else in this autobiography are glossed over and dealt with at a very shallow level. I was left feeling unsatisfied. I wanted more detail. This book is worth reading, especially if, like me, you live in Nairobi, but it just wasn't as deep, elucidating or informative as I was expecting.

Such a special story - Dame Daphne is the most admirable person; her life story with the animals in Kenya is just incredible and now she is running the orphanage for elephant babies outside of Nairobi. For anyone who is increasingly concerned about the wildlife in Africa and especially the elephant population, you can't miss this book.

I love this wildlife trust! I'm still reading this book! I want to read the story and to know these amazing people that are rescuing baby elephants and rhino's. I am a proud foster mom of two elephants from this wildlife trust! What a beautiful gift to give someone. In ordering one for my cousin.

This is a well written autobiography of a enviable woman who shares her many surprising findings about the communication, relationships, & little known traits of elephants. It's a book to share or keep for a second read.

This book is written in a wonderfully flowing way, and the pictures painted in words really describe the beauty of Africa! What an exciting life adventure Mrs. Sheldrick has lived. I was very honored to be able to visit her center when in Nairobi and fell in love with the baby elephants. I now know how she got to where she is now- and feel she had told her story in a most amazing way!

This unforgettable book teaches African History along with the story of David Sheldrick and the amazing gifts he and members of his family have given to the Kenyon people in the preservation of their National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries. Not only did I learn a great deal about elephant behavior, but also that of many other animal species.
Two weeks ago I had the memorable experience of visiting the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi National Park and I'm absolutely thrilled to have adopted a baby elephant named Embu.

Beautiful story of the selfless giving of love and care to nature's wildlife. It's a good thing there are such special people in the world to try to make up for all the selfish greedy ones oh there.

This is a well written, sensitively described story of one woman's human love of her life as well as of her life's work in the African bush. The ending is sad, though, in terms of our helplessness to combat the ongoing slaughter of these magnificent, sentient animals for ivory.

The personal story of Dame Sheldrick as her husband manages a wild life park in Kenya. Interesting, funny stories of her
love of animals, especially the babies, that she took care of throughout her life.

I loved, loved, LOVED this book. This woman should be an international hero for all she has done, and is doing for wild animals. I loved hearing all her stories and I'm so glad she took the time to write them down.

Daphny goes back to the very beginning . You understand the immense challenges & hardships these early pioneers endured. All the while it is a beautiful love story between David and Dahny Shldrick and the African elephants .

Enjoyed this book immensely. We'd just returned from 2 weeks in Kenya, and it took us right back to our safaris. My wife and I read the book separately in a week's time, and now we are reading it again, out loud to each other, as bed time story material. We could not recommend it more highly!

This book encompasses many things we are passionate about. It traces her family roots in South Africa to the grueling migration north to Kenya and beyond. Beautifully written. Vivid descriptions of the landscape, people and animals of the time. I felt like I was there, I was her. A wonderful book that will inspire you to live a free and passionate life!

This book provides a fitting memorial to the elephants of Kenya as well as to the other wild animals who benefited from the sacrificial devotion of the Sheldricks and others. Enjoyable, enlightening, and educational--a book to be recommended.

I really enjoyed reading the story of the elephant orphanage & how one couple made such a difference. Easy to read & both informative & entertaining. Opens your eyes as to how sensitive animals are to love & affection as well as the opposite

This book is amazing. I learned alot about elephants and the path to protect the wild animals in Kenya. Must read. Purchase from their website if you want to buy it though, since some of the proceeds go to the foundation!!! Wish I knew that before buying it on the store.

Beautifully written! Absolutely heartwarming! This book captivated my attention, and I was sad to reach the end. If you love wildlife, especially elephants, then you must read about Daphne Sheldrick and the special bond that she shares with a host of wild orphans.

Biographies are not always my favorite form of reading, but this true story of husband and wife wildlife conservationists in Kenya is totally absorbing. Often humorous, sometimes disturbing, but always informative and thought provoking. Will stay long in your memory.

Dame Daphne has captured her experiences beautifully in this book. My heart breaks for the Elephants who suffer so needlessly from the profiteers . I would hope the whole world could understand the importance of preserving wildness. Elephants are killed for the sake of trinkets. abhorrent!
Dame Daphne is a brave and wonderful person and I thank her for telling her story.

Received in excellent shape and very quickly. Beautiful book and though I have not finished it, a very worthy story of elephants and how we relate to them, and in general how important they are, by a very special author, Daphne Sheldrick, who has lived in Kenya most of her life.

To read this heartwarming beautifully written memoir about David and Daphne Sheldrick's love for Africa, her magnificent wildlife and for each other is at once inspiring and poignant in todays times when much of that wildlife is threatened with extinction in most parts of the continent.
Great read !

This is a book that everyone should read. Despite enormous challenges (such as relentless poaching) and much heartache this inspiring woman soldiered on to make a difference, something few do. It is a rare book. Thank you Mrs Sheldrick.

Love Life and elephants is the best autobiograpy written in years. A fascinating history of the area and story of an extraordianry life. Dame Daphne is a talented storyteller with an unusual life story to tell. Not just about elephants, but about Africa, the white mans role as well as an educational insight into the vast biology of the country. Could not put this down. WOhat an amazing woman with a real gift to share.

Unfortunately I have not read this book. It was loaned to us by my sister-in-law because she thought we would enjoy it as much as she did. Before we could read it, our Doberman puppy pulled it out of the bookcase, ate the dust cover, and destroyed both the front and back hard back covers. So, I found this book on your site and ordered it as a replacement. We never did tell my sister-in-law about the first book!

Loved it - the author's style was totally warm and engaging - I did not want it to end. Having just been to Africa and the Elephant orphanage, her story was enthralling, heartwarming and at times heartbreaking - when the love of her life dies.I felt transported back to Africa. I will definitely read this book again

FANTASTIC book that I have now read three times (once with my book club, who all also loved it!) Sheldrick describes the animals and the landscape with such vivid imagery.. at times it is like reading poetry. Her ability to convey the feelings of the animals and her connections to them makes them seem like old friends. A touching memoir of a beautiful legacy.
