What a clever story, integrating the two worlds and telling the story from the perspective of the NPCs. Good job drawing me into supporting the characters during their adventure. I'll read the next book for sure.

we've all read books where gamers are sucked into the game world, but what would happen if an NPC jumped script? This awesome story! Great characters , references to gaming, and wit abound. Worth reading and I hope there will be some great sequels. Power to the henchmen!!

Great concept, excellently implemented. The little details of what happens to the NPC's and the consequences (the mayor's daughter kidnapped so often she gets to know her kidnappers....LOL) make this an amusing and interesting story. Mr. Hayes ties in the Role Payers to the NPC's in a way I have not seen before and at the same time gives a lesson on results and consequences (intentional or not). I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has played RPG's or MMO's.
Keep up the great writing, Drew!

This book was a pleasant surprise. Some of the character motivations and plot development is a little contrived, but then it is supposed to be a D&D adventure. The writing was much better than I expected, and the plot was just plain fun.

While the dialogue is a little clunky sometimes, this is an enjoyable novel that knows how headnod to the fans. It also raises interesting questions regarding story worlds, even if in a slightly ridiculous manner.

Drew Hayes keeps you captivated with a balance of brevity and detail, humor and seriousness. While NPCs is gamer-based, Hayes gives plenty of hints so that non-gamers won't be lost. Character development endears this reader. Oh, just get this book, you'll like it. :-)

Hayes clearly remembers his own gaming group fondly and does a nice job overall bringing the premise to life.

The plot moves along and there are lots of nice moments (particularly like the God the Minions), but his dialogue isn't as strong as someone like Jim Bernheimer.

That said, a nice read. I also really like his Superpowered series.

Found this through Superpowereds, amazing book! It was pretty easy to connect with the protagonists, and all the battles were written perfectly. I was going to wait until Christmas to buy it but changed my mind due to it being everything I was looking for story-wise. Totally hoping for more!

As a gamer myself I thouroughly enjoyed this interesting take on what happens with the NPCs in so many of the games that I play. It was fresh and original. I would recommend this to anyone who plays RPGs or just loves a good fantasy book read.

Great idea - executed in an okay manner. If you're not even vaguely familiar with computer gaming, this will leave you puzzling a bit. I won't go looking for a sequel, but if one pops up and is free or 99 cents, I may follow up.

I really enjoyed this book, and not just because I have a history with RPG's. I appreciated that the story and characters were written with so much heart. I was attached to them just a few chapters into the book.

A pretty good take on the venue of tabletop gaming with some interesting twists and no small amount of humor, this book doesn't take itself too seriously- but has some good insights into human nature. I'd definitely buy a sequel.

As an original Dungeon & Dragon RPG tabletop gamer, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The author did a very good job seamlessly mixing the elements of gaming into the story. I sincerely hope there is a sequel in the works!

Good book - stretches the suspension of disbelief quite a bit (even for a Fantasy novel) to the point where the logic seems farcical, but to be fair, it is not something the description (and even the title itself) didn't confess.

If you decide to read this book after reading its description, it will deliver on what it promises, and quite well at that. I would recommend this book and consider it quite akin to John Scalzi's Redshirts

Role playing fans will love the underlying concepts. I thought the God of Minions was a touch of genius. A gnome paladin of the God of Minions...a half-Orc wizard...I can't wait for the next installment

I've enjoyed Drews Superpowered books so I thought I'd give this a try Although I've never played a table top fantasy game and probably never will. I enjoyed the book and will purchase the follow up if one is ever written. Suck at reviews but it's an enjoyable fantasy book with thankfully no awkward love story in it.

I really enjoyed this book and in an uncharacteristic manner I unfortunately burned through it far far too quickly. Usually, I like to take a slightly slower approach and really savor a good story. In fact, I started reading NPCs midway through a new mistborn novel because it was just dragging on so dreadfully.

Personally, I hate giving away spoilers and details of any given novel. I can say, our friends are very reasonable in their approach on how they handle a most unfortunate disaster or at least accepting of what they believe to be a grim fate ahead. In this world Jack, the ba--- NPCs are alive and the PCs are the complete bunch of bastards we used to play them as. Honestly, I'm the kind of guy who ask a random NPC to 'take a card, any card' from a "deck of many things." In fairness, the GM should never had let us have that thing. That's the thing... the NPCs are fragile and fodder... it's an interesting world they have to adapt to and contend with. Don't worry, this isn't a story about a bunch of characters that get rolled over at every turn. They do grow, survive and potentially thrive.. I mean.. I once watched a barbarian punch an NPC and he dropped stone cold dead because he had half of a d4 in HP. That poor barbarian! He suffered an alignment check and lost half his experience.

The story was great. Reminded me of the 'Gamers' movies, but not from the same perspective.I also got the Whispersync Audiobook version. It was nice to put a voice to each of the characters.
If you enjoy RPGs and a good story, read this book. Only complaint was that if felt too short. However, it felt like there was another quest coming. Can't wait for the next one.

I was pleasantly surprised by what could easily have been just another fantasy novel.
It's original, funny and well written. It kept my attention all through the book and that's something I don't find much anymore

The writing style is a bit too straight forward, but the idea behind the story, and the plot were great. The author did a great job of bringing the plot full circle. Would have liked for the book to be a bit longer, and would like to see this turn into a fun series. Hayes does a good job of keeping the book in a semi-serious tone, mixing satire and real danger to characters who can't simply "re-roll".

As someone who has never really played any tabletop games (mainly because of a lack of irl friends to play them with), this was a fun, easy read with distinct characters and an easy format to follow. Not great literature, but fun. Highly recommendec for those with a few hours to kill and a love of the absurdities of tabletop games.
