Georgette Heyer at her best! Sylvester and Phoebe are intense personalities who prove to be so difficult. Phoebe remains stubborn right to the end even though Sylvester begins to soften as he faces the reality of true love. The reader must read to the very end before the love story is resolved. Yes, the storyline is predictable but the journey is so enjoyable.

I was listening first to Richards Armitage narrated version. But I am not a native speaker, so some words I didnt catch. Then I bought this book for my kindle. It was wonderful. Funny conversations, good story and amusing characters. And also very fine portrayed main hero.
Now I am looking forward to another Heyers bok - Venetia. With beautiful voice of Richard Armitage again:)

I bought this after I Bought and heard Covenient Marriage and Venetia by Georgette Heyer Audio Books read by Richard Armitage. Another great pairing of Heyer/Armitage these books are light hearted cozy and warm and Sylvester proves to be the best so far for story and depth and characterization especially the hero and Heroin who is plain and down to earth she is a Heroin for the ordinary girl but don't get me wrong I love all three if you've never heard any of these audio books I encourage you to for Mr. Armitage's voice alone is worth it he brings out the humor, personality and voices of every character which is an amazing range for a deep silky voice. Together Heyer and Armitage transport you back in time as though they were telling you a story in front of a warm fire

This book has a charming mix of romance and emotion with a touch of the ridiculous thrown in. One of my Heyer favourites and shows that a perfectly satisfying book can be written without even a little bit of erotism in it. This one's a keeper

A pleasant romp but not the greatest Heyer by any means. The hero is almost too good to be true and one can't quite see why he should fall for the heroine. One isn't even quite sure that marriage will work but the plot beguiles well enough.

I chose the above rating because she lost my interest for part of the book. I especially liked how the hero managed to get the heroine in a pliant mood after the interview with his invalid mother; and when the heroine discovered how much they looked alike, it was priceless.

I have to admit that "Sylvester" is my first Georgette Heyer novel, prompted by the incredible voice talent of Richard Armitage. He is truly amazing. I listened to the audio book on a recent 12-hour car trip, both ways, and not only did I love the book, I absolutely adored Richard Armitage's reading. What a treat! It's almost impossible to believe that his is the only voice. I can hardly wait for "Venetia."

Definitely one of Heyer's weaker works. Nevertheless, it's still worth a ready by dedicated fans. Her writing style had not reached it's full crispness in this book. It's still a little clunky. The plot line is solid, but not spectacular.

This book leans more on mystery than the romance. As with all Georgette Heyer novels, I become totally enchanted with the lifestyle, the language, and the fashion of the Regency era. I also like the fact that on some of her novels, the growing romance of the protagonists was not intended to be the main focus of the story.

Richard Armitage narrates this. If you know who he is then you will adore this book. I wasn't sure if I would like the story but it is good too. And listening to RA for so many hours is definitely worth it.

I would begin by saying that one of the questions proposed by the store was what part of the book 'impacted' me and I would respond that I'm not an absessed tooth and that impact is a noun or adjective but never a verb. You can have an impact on someone, or have an impacted tooth, but you do not and never will despite the 'verbal abuse' of that poor word, impact someone. This society is so dumbed down! Anyway, to get back to my 'review', Heyer's books have never had an impact on me like, let's say "The Brothers Karamazov", but as entertainment they do sweep me back to the 19th century and the Regency period as they are intended to do. They're wriitten to delight and entertain and Heyer is a master at both. This is one of her weakest books as the story line is rather unpleasant and totally improbable. The uncle of the title is a rather haughty duke, and the rather plain and very self-righteous heroine never lets him forget it for a minute. The protagonist is a boring and utterly repellent character that must have annoyed Heyer also, as she's presented so unsympathetically. I kept hoping the duke would send her packing. haha

Loved this as an adolescent and have always remembered it. Rereading it after half a century away and Du Maurier is far the better writer. This retained none of the magic it held in my youth while rereading one of Du Maurier's books at the same time brought back the original pleasure.
