Tayari Jones is an author with an unerring eye for the little details of human interaction, and she never fails to care for her characters. As a result, this is a story that has no easy villains, a fascinating complexity, and emotional stakes in every scene. Just amazingly well done.

Love this book so much. It actually reminds me of my family. A family member had a child with this lady and her daughter is my friend. We never spoke about who her dad is, but her little brother started saying hey cuz. So confusing when there is a family secret such as this.

Wow. This story had me intrigued from the start. Two girls, one father. Two women, one husband. How does the shadow family live and can we pull for them even though we know the truth? The way the lives are separate yet intertwined kept the story moving forward. The curiosity the shadow daughter had towards the official daughter was believable. When the reality of the situation comes to a head, you want it all to work out with a happily ever after. But life isn't always written with an HEA ending. I do wish the ending had been different. Sigh.

This novel is about duplicity and the impact it has on relationships. The voices of the protagonists ring true. The characters are well delineated and realistic. The book was engaging from the beginning to the end. I highly recommend this novel.

What a fascinating story about a "hidden child," and the ways this can affect both families. I found myself thinking about the characters a lot, and was surprised when the author changed viewpoints that I sympathized with each of them. This is a warm and heartbreaking story.

I enjoyed the plot, the last few chapters and most of all were disappointing and a let down for most of the characters. I would not think that Gwendolyn would have handled it by airing it all in front of the entire salon. I expected her to. Do so woman to woman. And, I was let down with the ending for the daughters.

I liked the storyline and thought that the author did a good job in depicting the different families. I only rated this book a three because I feel that the characters should have been more developed. The meeting was very anti-climatic. I expected more dialogue between the women and daughters. The husband who was supposed to be spineless remained true to character. It was enjoyable but not one I would highly recommend.

I LOVED this book!!! I was Not expecting the twists and turns that were told by one of these "half-sisters".
Just goes to show different people have different perceptions!!!!!

I enjoyed Silver Sparrow and recommend it to anyone who likes semi-historical drama. There's a lot about Atlanta in it and the story introduces a subject matter that has and continues to dance around our community but is barely ever discussed out in the open. Read it with a group as there's lots to talk about.

This book shows the full extent of adults choices on their children. It tells the story of the "other" family first, but also shows the main family and the conflicts they faced as well. Well written and mesmerizing. I wished all the way through for slightly different responses on the part of all the characters, but I suppose that would have made it less realistic.

I believe that James Witherspoon is the dirtiest character I have ever had the displeasure of reading about. What a low life piece of work! My only hope for a happy ending is the author pens a sequel and gives him a horrible and much deserved death!

I loved this book but the ending was disappointing. There are too many unanswered questions. The epilogue skips ahead so many years. It left me wondering what happened to the sisters during those years. What happened to Gwen? Did she survive emotionally?

Interesting dysfunctional family dynamics related from the point of view of two young girls who are unknown to each other, yet are siblings, leading parallel lives. At times difficult to tell whose perspective was being showcased, hence 4 stars.

I loved this book! The author has a wonderful writing style that grabs your attention from the start and keeps it til the end. Loved her witty remarks throughout the book. I enjoyed that the story was told from both girls point of view too. Highly recommend this book!

This book is so beautifully and compellingly written that it kept me interested in all the characters and their lives, the whole way through. An excellent book is, for me, one that succeeds in taking me to a different world, seeing life from a perspective other than my own. This is one such book.

I enjoyed this book very much. The author shows an authentic life in Georgia with a black family and the secret that was kept. This book with excellent questions at the back could be a great book club choice.

The story line sounded very interesting but it dragged on and on. The main character was too self-pitying to be likeable. The rest of the characters weren't much better. This book was a big disappointment.

Was caught off guard by this complex story! Rich with personality and deep internal struggle ... Questioned my tough life decisions, believing they were in the "best interest" of all involved. Now, not so sure. Cultural and social ridigity ... For better, not for worse, generations must move us forward with love and acceptance in their hearts!

It definitely grabbed my attention from the first line to the last. I couldn't put it down. Very excited to read more by this author, luckily my local library has most of her work for free on the e-library digital lending because the cost is pretty high on the store for a digital product.

It's a gripping story it catches your attention from the beginning. A little girl long for the love of her illegitimate father . The kind of love that he could never give her because he's has another family all she can have is second best. I can see this book being a movies it was well written and it had a bit of reality to it and it holds your attention from beginning to end. I recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed Silver Sparrow. It is well written. This was written in my childhood years and the historical references to the life of a young black girl in the late 1980 was just as I remember.

I think this book was written with insight in what it feels to be like a child/ daughter that is on the outside looking in, or wondering why your dad is not available for you when you need him to be. Or why a side chick allows herself to be given less than what she deserves as a woman

It's a good read. Sometimes the unbelievable is the reality for some families. Makes you ponder much after reading the story - what would I do in this situation? I think it also shows the selfishness of the "other wife" in allowing her daughter to be raised under those circumstances just to keep a bigamist in her life. Who lost the most in this story, the children did. Again, adults sacrificing children for sins of the flesh supposedly in the name of love.

A very interesting and honest depiction of a hidden family and a man's unsuccessful balance between the two. At some point people reach their breaking point. The three star rating is given due to its undeveloped and abrupt ending.

I think people who have been through similar experiences will appreciate this book. For people who haven't, they might find the story a bit far-fetched but believe it or not situations like these occur often. I liked that it had the perspectives of both daughters, although I did feel that one was represented more than the other. I finished it in a just a couple of days, which is a sign that I'm enjoying the book. I gave it four stars instead of five because I wasn't satisfied with the ending. Maybe she will write a sequel.

I really want to know more about the characters. I feel like this great big thing happened and you never get any resolution. I want to know what happened to the main character, she was smart and driven.

Overall I liked the book. There some parts I thought could've been left out and some parts should have extended more of an explanation. I really like the Rawley character and thought he was invisible and living in the shadows of James. James should have owned up a little more than he did. To totally cast the mistriss's daughter out when she was clearly hurt was very uncaring. I would like to see the characters on screen.

Silver Sparrow was indeed a good read, Her father being a bigamist living two lifestyles what bother me is I really didn't like how he treated Dana and her mom, I felt as though they we're basically leftovers...great read very enjoyable
