This is one the best children's books ever written or adult for that matter. Karen Hesse totally captures what it would have been like to have tried to live in the dust bowl during the depression. The voice on the cd does an excellent job of bringing "Billie Jo" to life.

This Newberry does not disappoint the reader. A coming of age story set in the Oklahoma Dust Bowl relates the unfortunate circumstances of many families across the country during the Great Depression. A must read for middle grade students.

I would recommend this product to anyone and everyone. I like the way the author puts the words in the book, and the book is not confusing even in poetic verse. Interesting story and characters, very good.

I ordered this book for my grandchilds summer reading list. It arrived quickly in excellent shape. Several of her friends have read the book with her and all of them enjoyed it. They are SOOOO glad they did not experience the dust bowl years. They would recommend this book to all people.

First of all the shippment and condition were both superb. Secondly, this is an excellent book chronicling the life of a girl during the Dust Bowl. It has great historical context in an easy-to-read format; the book is in the style of a free-verse poem.

This is a simple, seductive and mournful story about the Great Depression and the tragedies that just happen in people's lives. It is a very easily read book, if you aren't easily moved to tears. I am in awe of the author's ability to write this story as a blend of journal and epic poem. This much easier for a child to grasp than the Odyssey,

I was expecting a first hand account. It is interesting and I am enjoying the format more than I thought I would. My mother was a product of the dust bowl years. She came out of Nebraska and she was the reason I bought the book.

Out of the Dust was a wonderfuly crafted story about a young girl named Billie Joe who was in the dust bowl. I really liked how in the story the author ( Karen Hesse ) really explained how Billie Joe was feeling
in the story. This was a really good book and I really think that if you are looking for a good book you should pick this one.

This is different than anything I have ever read. Each chapter is written in poetry format, which is lovely.
It is a tragic story that ends well. Billie Jo is a very realistic character, who learns some very valuable life lessons.
