It's great to see how Bones lived before Kat. Reading this puts their relationship into a whole new light. I recommend reading it after the other books to really appreciate Bones. But starting the series here might work too.

Quite different from a lot of vampire fiction I've read. It doesn't have lot of the rhinestone false embellishments of twilight an true blood. It's raw and gritty and graphic. I'm looking forward go starting the series.

I'm always jonesing for my next Cat & Bones fix so when Reckoning was released as a stand-alone novella I just jumped at the chance to start from the very beginning of this series. This short story was only previously available in the Unbound anthology and it's installment 0.5 in the Night Huntress series. I didn't love this tale but then again, there's no such thing as a bad read when this series is concerned IMO.
I'm just going to come out and say it. I found Bones severely lacking in this novella. His pre-Cat personality is dark and sad. There's no wit; he's just going through the motions to get the job done. After reading Reckoning I'm curious as to how Jeaniene Frost made the leap from this to the amazing book that is Halfway to the Grave. Even though I found this novella to be somewhat deficient; as a avid fan of this series, it's still a must-read for me. Reckoning is probably not the best introduction to the Night Huntress world but if you need something to tie you over until the next book comes out, what do you have to lose?

Although I only read this book after I listened to Halfway to the Grave on audio, I still enjoyed it.
I really loved the French theme in the book, especially the French phrases.
It's awesome to get a look at Bones before he meets Cat, and I love his witty, dry and sarcastic humor. Reckoning shows that Bones is completely all work and minimal play - yet at the same time he has to fight not to care about the people that get caught in the crossfire.
Plot, Pace, Writing style: 4/5
The pace is perfect and fast for a Novella and the plot is good. Jeaniene has a fantastic writing style and you can picture everything perfectly - as she describes it.
Cover talk: 4/5
I really like the cover. It's intriguing and spooky. It would have been awesome if they had used Bones or the LaLauries somewhere in there too.
Final Thoughts:
Reckoning is a light and juicy read, whetting the appetite for an amazing series!

I liked this short story. You get to see a glimpse of Bones before Cat. He doesn't seem quite as intense, lacking a bit of his haughty personality. I'm not sure if that is due to the short nature of the story or if it is because he was different before he meet Cat.
I really liked that this story tied into the other books. We met Marie (Queen of New Orleans) and learned a bit about hers and Bone's past. I think that's the thing I didn't like about the Sookie short stories - they were just stories that were there to take up space. They didn't have anything to do with the rest of the series. This one gave us background, characters, setting, etc.

Ah, Bones. What can I say? I love anything that has this character in it. Bones is like this fantasy, dream guy that only Kat is allowed to touch. How freaking unfair is that?!
Anyway, back to the book:
In this book, you get a look inside Bones head. I have to confess, I've lounged after a Bones POV a long, long time. So when I saw this book, I just had to get it. One click later and BAM, I had my own little Bones POV in my Kindle.
This isn't going to be a very long review, basically because there isn't so much to say and I don't want to post any spoilers, but I have to say one thing:
I almost died and had to close my eyes (literally) when Bones touched and thought of other women. I know, I know. That's not fair since Bones haven't met Kat yet, but it still broke my heart!
Besides that, this is a book you don't want to miss if you're a Bones lover like me. I can honestly say that Night Huntress is one of the best series I've ever read. It got spunk, romance, sexual tension, and well, everything.
This book though, didn't have as much romance. Basically because Bones is on a mission and not seeking out romance. But yeah, you get a little kisses and stuff here and there. Nothing much though. Which I'm glad for.
Five Stars!
Now, I WANT A BONES POV WHEN HE MET KAT THE FIRST TIME! want it with all my heart. thank you very much. haha :-)

Before he met Cat ... Vampire Bones is on the hunt in New Orlean's for a pair of brutal supernatural serial killers.
I am a huge fan of Bones and Cat and Frost's Night Huntress series, but it feels weird to see Bones on his own and with Cat's absence I missed the snarky banter and the steamy goodness that is the hallmark of the series. Though Frost still tells an interesting story with the way things go down the Bones here is a lesser one - he just doesn't seem as smart or end up being as powerful as us fan girls are used to seeing him.
Jeaniene Frost's "Reckoning" was previously published as part of the Unbound anthology.

I actually went back and read this after the first two books in the series. It was fun to see Bones on his own, but given the brevity, I missed the dynamic of his character. Plus with Cat, you're guaranteed banter. That said, it is nice to see that Bones is/was a good vampire before Cat, solidifying his character that much more.

The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost was one of the first paranormal series I read and I immediately loved it. I enjoyed this short-story as well. Reckoning takes place in New Orleans before Bones and Cat met. Although I missed Cat in this story, I enjoyed seeing Bones in a different light. The Queen is also a character in this short-story and the reader gets a glimpse of the Queen's and Bones interactions that will be continued later on in the series. I would recommend Reckoning to fans of the Night Huntress series.

This is the first novella in the Night Huntress series. I read this novella after I read the first couples books in the series and I didn't like it because in the book but Bones hasn't met Cat yet. I don't ever want to imagine one without the other. My brain just can't compute that. It is a quick read and Bones does kick ass in the book so it's worth a read.

When I first seen that there was a prequel to the night huntress novels, I decided to give it a go. I'm glad I did! The only thing keeping this short from getting the full five stars is because I would have liked to have seen Bones actually sitting in the bar when Cat came trolling in. Maybe even give a description of what he thought the first time he ever seen her. But that's just wishful thinking on my part. Overall, this was a really great book and it shows yet again what kind of man bones really is deep down when he gave Becca peace.

This is the last book of the series and Leila is tested beyond belief and Vlad is filled with guilt and anger. His pain and love for Leila is openly on display. As Leila gets help from an old friend Vlad is filled with jealousy and vows vengeance. Great read, I cannot wait for other books by Jeaniene.

A sweet short story ! For me it could've been a bit longer and more detailed.
Reckoning is a story about Bones before he meets Cat.
It sure was strange to read about the handsome vampire without his "Kitten".
But with or without his beloved Cat he still has that same humor I love so much about him !
