Well written novel, I enjoyed the historical information woven throughout. There was one detailed scene between lesbians that I could have done without, I don't think it's necessary to include porn in a novel. I won't be reading any more by this author. I like David Baldacci much better, very suspenseful reading and clean.

This was an eerie book. The characters seem real and familiar since I grew up in a small southern town. Not all of the racial prejudices are in the past. This book must have been rather shocking when published so many years ago, but tales of serial killers are on the news all too frequently.

I have always liked the barrington series but hadn't read any of the others. This book was a complete surprise. Coming from the south, the history rang true to me along with the story. I've already recommended this book.
Hot Pursuit: A Stone Barrington Novel :: Dirty Work (A Stone Barrington Novel) :: Smooth Operator (A Teddy Fay Novel) :: Run Before the Wind (Will Lee Novel) :: Orchid Beach (Holly Barker)

This is one of Stuart Woods' earlier works. I read it after about 15 of his later books.

I was enthralled at how he crafted together three different stories to trace the growth of a small Georgia town from 1920 to 1963.

Along the way he creates segments with FDR and JFK that were wonderfully done.

The spine for the story is the Lee family who are chronicled in several of Mr. Woods' books. It was delicious to go back and see the ancestors of Will Lee, the hero of one series of books.

As will all of Stuart Woods' books, it is a fast, engrossing experience that challenges one to find ways to sneak in a couple of chapters.

I've read several of Stuart Woods recent novels and liked them, but this earlier work really is much better! Complex, continuing story involving different generations over several decades. Keeps you interested and involved throughout the entire book.

It starts off slow with all the background information but it wasn't long before I couldn't put it down. What a look into our past and how we have evolved with our treatment of race. We still have a long way to go. The politics felt real. I'm hooked and already into the second book "Run Before the Wind". I plan to spend many enjoyable hours with the series.

It was a wonderful book, the characters were more real than I usually find. I do think that the youngest of the family became to successful too quickly, and will not read other books in the series. The setting and time were more important to me than the progress of the young state senator

I enjoyed following the story thru several generations. The tie ins to what was historically happening increased the interest. The "what goes around, comes around" was an aspect I particularly enjoyed.

I understand this book was made into a movie some time back. I have not seen the movie, but if it is as good as the book, I definitely want to see it. It was written in a way that I was made to feel as if it was happening now, and I was actually there. I grew up in Columbus, so places mentioned in the book were all familiar to me, except, of course, Delano. I wondered why he mentioned Delano in every one of his books...now I understand. What a surprise! Stuart Woods has been such a prolific writer, and I have not been disappointed in a single one that I have read. He has kept me entertained for many an hour. I hope he continues to write for a long time! I have read all of the Stone Barrington series, and look forward to the next one. I read all of the Holly Barker and Ed Eagle series and loved them, too. I have now read all of the Will Lee books, albeit backwards by accident, having downloaded them backwards to my Kindles, but this one was well worth the wait. Even though this was an individual story, not actually in the series, it involved Will's ancestors.

A little slow starting, which was necessary to lay the groundwork for the character development and the historical setting, which is accomplished with extraordinary realism without sensational embellishments. The story develops with such depth and realism, you'll find yourself living through three generations of very interesting events and people. The cliche that "you can't put it down" certainly applies here. Truly satisfying in every respect.

This book started out slow, too slow for me. Thanks to another reviewer I kept reading. It was well worth it! This book is going onto my favorite books list. I just loved it!
I'm not telling anything about the story, you'll have to read it for yourself.
