This is a powerful translation. As a person raised in Hawaii during the sixties my interest in the authors take on racism was shaded with my own experiences. Well written with Japanese simple clarity and Korean attitude.

I never imagined that this discrimination occurs in Japan, it was so eye opening. I am interested in obtaining more books by this author and learning more about the discrimination of ethnic groups in Japan.

Thought-provoking read about prejudices in other countries and cultures. Only downgraded one star due to some of the graphic violence that was hard to stomach, though realistic, since coming from the 17 year-old male protagonist voice.
Shadow Country (Modern Library) :: Sanshiro (Penguin Classics) :: Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (Classics) :: The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski (1995-08-09) :: Salt Houses

Excellent writing that tackles young love and discrimination. I thought the author expertly reviews what it's like trying to make your own path in a racist society. Definitely a book that's needed right now.

Beautiful writing, very powerful and original. Story and characters really pulled you in. The struggle of the characters with the realities of ethnicity and citizenship is very enlightening, makes you really think.

Brevity only adds to the charm of this story, and although some characteristics are unique to Japan, the overall struggle is far more universal. There's plenty of character growth and rarely a lagging moment.

Dislike:
Awkward moments in the book
Ending seemed to be a little rushed
There are a few strange word used that can be glossed over but initially caught me by surprise.

Beautifully entertaining right from the beginning and very informative about the racism that still goes on today in Japan against Koreans that migrated to Japan after WWII and where our ancestry originated. I would definitely recommend!
