For 18-year-old succubus, Sienna Nealon, six months of back-breaking training to be a Retriever is about to be put to the test. Meta-human activity is up. The Minnesota chapter of the Directorate - the agency that tracks and polices meta-humans - is stretched thin. With the Directorate's elite field operatives, the M-Squad, away on another assignment, Sienna and her two young fellow trainees, Kat and Scott, are tasked with investigating a series of convenience store robberies in Wyoming and South Dakota, possibly being perpetrated by a new meta sowing their oats. So... road trip.
Oh, for those wondering, a Retriever is an agent who tries to convince newly-discovered metas to come to the Directorate.
Maybe some plot spoilers.
What do three underaged agents do when they're given fake FBI badges and sent to snoop around a case but don't immediately make headway? They do dumb stuff. Like use their fake badges to snag beer at a bar. I was actually super-annoyed at Scott for coming up with this frat-boy idea - which goes to show how far removed I am from when I was under 21. But, yeah, that whole sequence is annoying. Because why would you risk jeopardizing your first-ever mission for a stupid fun night out?
That mysterious hombre, Reed, shows up, and this time Sienna gets her answers. Who is he? Who does he work for? What's his meta-human ability? Whose side is he on? His answers - and Sienna's aunt's answers (yeah, she shows up) - reveal the nature of the big bad what's been targeting Sienna this whole time.
Any news on Wolfe and Gavrikov, the dead passengers taking up space in Sienna's mind? Not much. Some.
I've gone on record as not being a fan of the romantic bits in this series. Mostly, because the guy Sienna's with is a drip. Zack is so goody-two-shoes and boring he comes off like a romantic male lead in a Hallmark movie. It's nice of the author to explore what sort of relationship a normal person could have with a succubus, whose mere touch is lethal. Obviously, there's a lot of blue balls and cold showers in that courtship. When you think of it, there's only really one sort that a succubus could safely have intimate relations with, and that's a-
Soulless (Girl in the Box, Book 3) is another good read from Robert J. Crane. To be honest, what Sienna runs into here doesn't present the same level of danger as Wolfe and Gavrikov did, respectively, in the previous two volumes. It actually feels like an interlude in which the next big bad adversary is introduced, meaning that the next book should be wall-to-wall crazy action and steep jeopardy. In this one, the thrills crescendo in an exciting third act as Someone shows up and the plot thickens that much more. 3.5 out of 5 stars, some points take away for the characters' lame decision-making.

The book's awesome to read. Great story but...yes but its too open ended. No conclusions on any front. Its like a very good episode on a continuing series. What I'm trying to say is that I don't like it when a book demands that you buy the next in its series just to know what happened. Book 1 has Wolfe ending. Book 2 has Garikov ending. But who was the bad guy here in book3? Andromeda? Idiot James? Aunt? Or even mom? Still rate it stars though.

"Soulless" takes Sienna Nealon to another level in her progression of growth. Her need of love or closeness is almost her undoing. In the end she finds unexpected help and we find more questions unanswered. Look forward to the next chapter.
