By Peter Clines - Ex-Patriots: A Novel (3/24/13)

This book does not disappoint. I haven't enjoyed a whip cream (bubble gum for the mind) book like these books in a long time. There is a nice meaty character development in every major player, which is rarely well delivered in a just for fun read. If you like a good popcorn movie in book form, you can't go wrong with this series.

So I really enjoyed the first book, Ex-Heroes, but I honestly feel this is even better. You get to see life outside of LA, and several superhuman elements therein. This is a great book and I can't wait to get my hands on the third instalment!

I already loved the first novel, but I think this series will just get better based on this second book. More action and great character back stories. It also explains a lot of the questions the first book may have left you asking yourself. Highly, highly recommend.

Interesting story line, real heroes, credible situations, some character complexity. I enjoyed reading it and a good continuation to the first novel. Could have been a little more creative with the "bad guy".

The mix of superheroes & zombies worked much better in ex-Heroes. Ex-Patriots is an OK book but it gets a bit silly at times.

The zombies don't really have much of a role in this story - they're little more than scenery. Where they do play a real role in the story, they're no longer actual zombies but drones under the control of a villain. I prefer my zombies with a bit more bite.

I also don't really appreciate the super-soldier idea. A platoon of Captain Americas? Yawn.

In this story, the normals are virtually non-existent. The supers interact with each other, and the normals again are just scenery - whiny, one-dimensional, immature backdrops for the important people.

One of the heroes (the exoskeleton character) essentially gets her powers stolen by another character (twice actually) and she reacts with all the interest of oatmeal.

The overall theme of this book (that evil people manipulate the masses and patriots in particular for their own nefarious purposes) had the potential to become a pointed critique of US and global politics. But the author seems to miss that entirely.

Having said all that, this is a fun story. It's quick-paced, well thought-out, and an easy read. Stealth is has more awesome in her bra than Batman has in his whole bat cave. St. George is more human and more accessible than Superman could ever be. If you're into superhero fiction, this is not a bad book.

In the afterward the author threatens to write a third book in the series. While I enjoyed the first two, I'm unlikely to bother to read the third.

As yet another lover of both Zombies & Superheroes, I enjoyed Book 1 (Ex-Heroes) but with Book 2 (Ex-Patriots) Peter Clines has really taken things to the next level. This is one of those books that I forced myself to stretch out reading a bit, since I didn't want to get to the end. I was very happy to learn that this would be a trilogy and hope to see it continue beyond Book 3!

This is a great followup to EX Heroes. It introduces a new hero, and hopefully is setting up the next installment for the series. I do think there could have been more character development, but all in all a very good read.

Peter Clines way of telling the story in simply awesome. I love all of the pop culture references through out his books, very witty author who knows how to develop characters and lead them on to grow . Love these books, They are worth the read!!!!!

This book was extremely entertaining. All the heroes described have their own personal and very compelling story. If you enjow reading about zombies and superheroes, and liked the first book, then this sequel is a must.

Again Peter Clines draws us into a world where the dead rule and a handful of heroes try to protect a meager population.

But when the remnants of the military show up with their own super soldiers, things get complicated.

Who ever thought that a book about super heroes vs zombies could have gritty, mature content and believable characters? This fits right in with World War Z Day by Day Armageddon as top of the line for Zombie fiction!

Zombie hordes are played out. Super-hero novels are a niche of a niche genre. Ah, but should the twain meet...we have the very entering mash-up universe of Ex-heroes.

Fun sequel to Ex-Heroes. Worth the $10 for sure. Well-played, Mr. Cline. I look forward to the final book of the trilogy.
