What the Hell Did I Just Read - A Novel of Cosmic Horror

I recommend this series to everyone who likes their horror & comedy in equally shocking proportions. You know the book is great when you can't stop reading while simultaneously not wanting the story to end. These books gave me a glimpse into a world that I will return to as often as possible. Dave & John are the anti-heroes of a generation. To the author I say bravo sir, job well done.

Another amazing chapter in the saga of John, David, and Amy. The only problem with the book is that once you start it, you can’t put it down. I mean that literally. Something grabs hold of your hands and will not allow you to put the book down until it is finished.

Yet another amazing entry in the John Dies series, though it'd probably stand alone just as well too. If you're a fan of the series, this one's got everything you wanted to see again: Plenty of dick jokes, plenty of cosmic horror, plenty of insight on the weird ways the dynamic sacks of meat we call humans operate from day to day. I laughed out loud (not something I normally do while reading), I teared up, I stared at the wall and rethought everything. As per usual when I read David Wong.

I pre-ordered this novel because I pre-ordered the one before it and the one before that. David Wong never fails to deliver, particularly when that delivery involves monsters, dildos, and creep-inducing cosmic horror! I picked this book up (relatively speaking, it was an e-copy) and could barely put it down. It was a roller coaster of confusion, right up to the end. Amazingly, Wong packed more than a few parables and good advice into it too. But, don't take my word for it!

I've been purchasing Jason Pargin's books since the original publication of John Dies at the End - I've been reading his work online since his early days at Pointless Waste of Time and I've been basically following him around the internet ever since. This book is the third in the JDATE series, in which John has yet to actually die at the end (um, spoiler alert?), and one of the great pleasures of following an author along in real time through their earliest work is watching it improve, noticeably, with each thing they publish.

What the Hell Did I Just Read is similar to This Book is Full of Spiders in that it maintains three main points of view - John, David, and Amy. It's much, much better at Amy's characterization, showing clear improvement in David's ability to write a realistic female character from her own point of view. There are exactly the amount of dick jokes I was hoping for, along with one of my favorite aspects of the JDATE books - the characters utilize Soy Sauce to solve a problem, but don't remember any of their choices when they come out of it and have to constantly try to guess what they did while totally high. And they NEVER guess right.

While this has one of the most pat and slightly too-wrapped-up-with-a-bow endings of Wong's books so far, it managed to still have enough biting, dark humor in it to feel fitting. If the series ended here, it would work perfectly. If it doesn't, you know I'll be one of the first preorder that book, too.

In short: Wong's writing continues to improve, and I continue to love the town of Undisclosed more each time we revisit it.

The third installment of the John Dies Series does not disappoint! All the frantic energy of the first book with the deliberate pacing of the second gives us a well balanced story filled with the deceptively thoughtful and humor we've enjoyed since Dave asked us the riddle who's answer would reveal the awful secret of the universe. (Spoiler: Nothing has any value except what you assign it and everyone has a different and just as valid idea of what that is.)

Disappointed in the story Wong tried to tell. I love the imagery, Wong has a way with words, but I was bored most of the time. Maybe I didn't get the profound meaning behind the story, or maybe I was depressed that I saw too much of myself in the main character, but I thought this was a sad sequel to a great series.

i can not recommend the exploits of this series enough. it takes a wonderful writer to deliver profound human insight and observation, raunchy laugh out loud comedy, and dreadful apocalyptic horror, and always without missing a beat. This incidentally being more than we will ever be able to say for our protagonists in these wonderful fictions. Maybe one day they'll save the world AND get something done right. To David Wong (Jason !) - Love you man.

This series, is one of the most amazing things on the planet. If you havent read the first two books you wont be lost reading this, but you are missing out. This book will have you laughing out loud immediately after a serious moment and then throw you back into a serious moment. Its a rollercoaster of the mind in such a good way. I recommend this book, I reccomend this series. You will not be disappointed.

There were a few moments of greatness, but this book makes me wonder where the saga has to go at this point. I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting Undisclosed. I feel as if there isn't as much existential dread or mystery this time through, but I believe that is a result of continued exposure. Overall worth your time.

I really enjoyed this latest installment in the John and Dave series. I had just read the column in Cracked, How Mediocrity Can Quietly Destroy Us All (hope I remembered that title correctly) and then grabbed this book from the stack of books I had been meaning to read (but have not had time for) that I brought along with me on a six week stay in Idaho.

This was what I needed. Thank you.

An incredible entry in the John Dies series leaving only a burning desire for the next and a burning sensation in the groin. I literally did not understand what I'd read by the end of it. Aptly named. Will probably not summon demons into your home.

Great book! I really enjoyed the first two books in the series and I like this one a little more than the second book. The swirl of comedy and horror is hard to pull off effectively and Mr. Wong seems to have that niche down. Sometimes the comedy is a little "try hard" but those moments are few and far between. I bought one for my mom, too.

Hilarious, terrifying, and deeply relatable, David Wong once again weaves ridiculous narrative threads into a horrific yet comforting story quilt that encourages its victims to swaddle themselves in bizarre plot developments and brutal honesty while using flawed metaphorical language in internet reviews.

Honestly please send help I'm being cuddled into oblivion.

David Wong the writer is a genius. David Wong the character is a knucklehead. Please buy his books so he can write more. I need more [Undisclosed] in my life. I am also definitely a person and not a cluster of insects.

Five stars would read again no wait, I am reading it again right now. Book three pairs the team with another malevolent entity that makes paranoia justifiable and stuff seriously go read this. If you've never read David Wong then you should. If you have read him, why are you reading reviews instead of reading the book?
