The definitive text book on distinguishing and recognizing character defects - contains many individual stories that help the reader to identify their own particular character defects, that stand in the way of their personal growth - this is a book one can take down from the shelf and review on an annual basis, to see what progress they have made towards becoming happy, joyous and free -

Combined with The Twelve Steps and TwelveTradions, Drop the Rock is a must read. It is a great elaboration on steps 6 & 7, treatment of which is mystifying brief in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. These are very important steps, and this book brings greater understanding of their importance.

This book is awesome. I already had the book and ordered several for gifts. It gives exceptional insight into Steps 6 & 7 of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. It goes into great depth to explain those steps and is a huge help for anyone in the program - or anyone just trying to improve the quality of their lives.

A solid explanation of two of the most important steps in the 12 Step Program. Not only is the theory of the steps investigated but also practical hints are offered for what to do after reading the steps.

I bought three of these books through the store since the price was better than other vendors and I received the items in one day. I have just started to read the book and it is going to be very valuable for its purpose. The others I purchased will make excellent gifts.

In terms of self discovery, this was the best book Ive read in a long time. Not for the weak hearted, its going to challenge you, but if you make it to the end....beyond worth it. Considering ordering multiple copies, anyone who I talk with it about ends up wanting a copy.

Overall I gave it three stars because while it is informative it is also repetitive and expensive. First let’s remember that the Big Book is cheaper than this book and it is the cornerstone of all recovery. If you are going to read a book about recovery I would suggest it be read first. Next, in that context, the Big Book only devotes like two paragraphs to it in the “into action” section to steps 6 and 7, which I believe is for a reason. The brevity to me indicates that while it should be taken seriously, it is not something that needs to be overanalyzed. Simply be ready to ask God and ask him/her/it. This book can in my opinion overanalyze and muddy up what to me is a simple proposition. If you are serious about recovery it definitely will not hurt to read (which is why I read it) but I have found many other books more useful. The Big Book, the 12 and 12, living sober, 12 things that mess up recovery, the Grapevine, As Bill Sees it, 101 Common Clichés, and others. It Is informative in that it orients you to the steps and provides some context.
PROS:
In depth discussion of steps six and seven
Different perspectives on both steps
Details personal accounts – I find personal accounts and application necessary as it shed insight in how to work it in your own life.
CONS:
Wouldn’t work well for a newcomer
Fairly repetitive

My sponsor recommended this book to me, and we are reading and discussing it together. It gives another viewpoint of Steps 6 and 7, and I always welcome as many suggestions and interpretations as I can get. Great recovery tool.

As others have said, this book is not for someone who is newly sober. But it is an amazing, amazing book that truly helped me turn some things around and greatly helped me to improve the quality of my sobriety. Steps 6 and 7 are often glossed over in the program, and this book demonstrates just how truly important they are. Instead of doing yet another 4/5 step inventory--try getting into 6 and 7 instead.

Excellent resource for anyone wanting to support their recovery. Provides clarification and guidance for two of AA's steps that are often overlooked. This book is a spiritual asset, and I highly recommend it.

I recommend this book for anyone who is working the steps and is a friend of Bill W's.
It is clear, explicit and excellently written and is a tremendous help in working through steps 6 and 7. I have already given away the first copy I bought and have purchased another one for myself again.

Love both books. They are specific in working steps 6,7 and 10. I have read Drop The Rock twice already. Easy reading, short and to the point. Recommend it for everyone in either program who is ready to work those steps.
