I liked this book because it had a lot of action in it. It was extremly exciting because the chapters moved around and I don't find that in a lot of books. In one chapter Brain Jacques focused on Redwall then the next he focused on the hares of the Long Patrol and so on. Though I don't like books where the author kills one or two of the main characters this was an exception. If you like Outcast of Redwall or Pearls of Lutra you'll love this book.

The Long Patrol By Brian Jacques is one of many books which branched off of his popular book Redwall. Being the newest addition to his exciting book series this fantasy, printed in 1997 is a great read. Having read five other books by Mr. Jacques, I didn't meet many suprises and generaly knew where the plot of the story was going after the first sixty pages. But even with the lack of suprise I was not disappointed by the story at all. Brian still had many on going conflicts surrounded by unique characters that you grow to love.
The story begins with the bad guy, Damug Warfang, who's father had recently died, giving him control of an enormous army. He intends to roam the land killing and destroying the countryside, and enslave the peaceful beasts of the land. However his plans are in dangered by a young rabbit named Tammo, who's life long dream is to be a warrior in the Long Patrol. Assisted by a squirrel named Russa, Tammo begins a path that will bring him to warrior status and make him a hero.
The story is simple to read yet remarkably detailed, providing pictures of the environment, personality and battles in the readers mind. Brian Jacques could even make running in a field seem like a fun activity to the reader. But the detail and simple read isn't what sets this book apart from others. What makes The Long Patrol and others of Jacques' books stick out is the unique characters found in them. He has taken simple woodland animals and given them each a personality of their own. Some examples are the rabbits. Brian presents them as warriors, who love battle, food, and the sound of their own voice. With big mouths willing to say whatever comes to mind, and an appetite big enough for an army, the rabbits are provided with simple character traits which control their decisions and their part in the story. Not only are the animals provided with fitting personalities, but they are also provided with their own speech. By refering to others as "sir" or their repetition of "hurr, hurr" after every sentence, they receive a unique voice that you can really hear as the reader. Brian also shows this in the ground hogs, providing them with a sound that matches their personality of quiet and shy. "Whoi do ee say that?" or why do you say that? really sets them apart from the other animals by giving them a voice of their own. It's these individual voices that provide a uniqueness and enhances the personality traits of each character. This also provides a certain feel that makes the reading experience more enjoyable by involving them more in the characters personality. The only thing wrong with the book is the Walt Disney feeling the book provides. With a serious tone to the plot, it is still stabbed at with small points not consistent with its tone. These moments doused with childish humor, makes you think you're watching a movie by Warner Brothers. Due to this the audience of the book is limited to adolecent males, anyone else may not enjoy the book 100 percent.
By setting the reader up in an imaginary world, with myths, legends and a uniqueness not found in too many books, Brian has written a great book. Though it may have its faults "nobody's perfect" and its strong points out weigh its weakness. To anyone who likes a fast read and a good plot with great characters, The Long Patrol will not be a disappointment.

I thought that is was an excellent book from the Redwall series. Once again the perilous hares of the Long Patrol come and save the day. When the Long Patrol finds a new recruit named Tammo, who can throw a dirk with the best of them, they find out that vermin are on the move towards Mossflower again. When they finally reach Redwall Abbey, they find the south wall is crumbling to pieces. During the counsel of war, young Tammo falls asleep and delivers a message from the great warrior mouse, Martin. It says the battle must be fought somewhere else. They must get Midge Manycoats to dress Tammo and himself up as vermin, so they can pass themselves off to the vermin at camp. When they get to camp they say they are seers of the future and they should fight at what is now called "A Thousands Ridge." They march over and find 300 Redwallers. I will not give away the end, but it is a exciting ending. I know because I have read every single Redwall book.

I read this book when I was in fifth grade and I am now a junior in high school. This was the first Redwall book I read and it is still the best, by far.

Why Read this?

Reason's to read are because the characters are realistic, I could relate to them, most readers will be able to. I also thought that the 'Rapscallion' were pretty cool. The stroyline was the traditional redwall quest, bad guy, final battle to save the people of redwall sort of thing. He also puts a bit of history in the backround to give the book more spice. There are no reasons not to read this, its a great stroy about a young hare trying to make his mark in the Long Patrol.

Great job Master Jacques!

Before the Taggerung came out this was my favourite Redwall novel - I've read it over 15 times! The action is great and the characters (some from pearls of lutra, which I read at least 20 times) are described with amazing detail. The battle scenes are the most realistic in any Redwall book!
I saw some reviewers here say that they don't like the book because bits describing the scenery are boring or because of difficult dialect. But that's what to me makes Redwall stand out among all the other animal fantsy novels - it's archaic beauty. And Redwall books wouldn't be right without the different tongues - maybe it's because I live in New Zealand, a very British ex-British colony, and it's different in the US. Anyhow, I love all books in the Redwall series, and this is one of the best.

The long patrol tells of a story about a young rabbit that is determined to join the long patrol so his mother helps him by having a squirrel go with him to help prove himself that he can join the Long Patrol.Tammo is his name and he will meet new characters along his journey with only a sharp knife that is called a dirk.He will work alongside the long patrol to show he is ready to join.

Tammo's plotline and his craving to be a member of the legendary Long Patrol intrigued me,and the antagonists,Damug Warfang and his Rapscallion hordebeasts were also very interesting, like the antagonist(s) always are for me. Russa Nodrey,a wandering squirrel, was my favorite character. I also was very surprised and happy that this book was in the present. Every Redwall book is always a must-read!

The Long Patrol is fascinating! It has completely detailed everything and is just wonderful! You will definately love this and the whole series , no matter what kind of genre you prefer. It has everything from grueling battles to blooming romances between young hares. I say two thumbs up! No, wait, four thumbs up ( You can't give these books enough thumbs to explain)!

Personally i love this book if nothing else then for the hares. they have always been some of my favorite characters because of their joyous personality. THey are funny, often militaristic and high-spirited creatures in this series. I loved the battle scenes in this book and enjoyed getting the chance to hear more about the hares.

I thought that; The Long Patrol , was a excellent book ! I was sad when Russa died and thought she was a very brave creature indeed! I cheered when Tammo got married , was in shock , when Lady Cregga was blinded, and laughed when Rubbadub gave a drum roll! All together I give Brian Jacques' book an Eulaliaaaa!!" Very Good Sah!"

This book is very exciting, emotional, and descriptive. It follows tradition with former books in the series and displays information in long fruitful sentences. Battle description both made me cry and laugh for the death of a protagonist and the defeat of evil. The Long Patrol displays a perfect development of the series of Redwall.

Tammo is a young hare who has ambitions to join the regal ranks of the Long Patrol, a battalion who defends the area from thieves and bandits. One of these bandits is Damug Warfang, leader of the Rapscallions, and almighty enemy of the leader of the Long Patrol, Cregga Rose Eyes. Unknowingly, the combined efforts of these two characters is the only way to defeat the massive force of the evil Rapscallions, but what sacrifices must be made to achieve this goal?

Once again Brian Jacques shows his writing skills with a addititon to his great Redwall series. The Long Patrol is a awesome novel which places animals in the roles of people, but still consumes you in a heart felt and powerful story. With humor, drama, and love, The Long Patrol can set its place as a classic novel in the heart of all its readers. This book will entertain you in all aspects and keep you occupied for hours. If your up for a good book, this is a good one.

The Long Patrol is mainly about a young hare Tammo who all his life wanted to join the Long Patrol, but his father forbids it. When Tammo finally runs away (with help from is mom), he discovers the Long Patrol is really diffrent from what he thought. If anyone knows the order of the books (not order written) please post. Thanks!

I believe this book had good ideas but no character development and the end battle was too short. But still I say that if you like Redwall books you might enjoy it even though it was a bit shallow. I would not recommend this book to anyone just starting the Redwall series because it is towards the end of the series. After reading this book my first reaction was Jacques just wanted to get the story done with. Even with these short comings it followed Jacques's style of writing which can absorb and please any reader, no matter how little detail.

I read the Long Patrol, by Brian Jacques. It was one of his best books so far. The setting was in Mossflower, and its surrounding area. The Long Patrol, a group of perilous hares, set out to go to Redwall Abbey to warn them of the Rapscallions, an army of deadly rats, ferrets, foxes and stoats. The Long Patrol teams up with waterhogs, shrews, otters, and redwallers to destroy the Rapscallions! They are outnumbered 1000 to 300. Can Lady Cregga the Badger Lord and her Salamandastron hares arrive in time to help them? This is possibly the greatest battle Redwall has ever seen...
On a scale of 1 to 5, I would give the Long Patrol a 5. Brian Jacques is one of the best authors out there. You should read all of his Redwall books.

I liked the book because it was exciting and full of action. I think that if people read the books by Brian Jacqures they will enyoy the books as much as I did. The books are long but it is worth it. I also liked the book because some of the characters were funny. I think that the Long Patrol is a good book.

I liked this book, but I like the other Redwall books better. Some parts of it are great as in the other books in the Redwall series, but some are really boring, unlike the others. Certain parts are so boring that I had to put the book down for a while because I got really bored. Over all, I liked the other Redwall books better than this one.

don't listen to those 1,2,3,even 4 starrers this was the best one yet in this book there is a young hare who always dreamed of joining the long patrol(a fighting unit of perilous hares) one day a friend of his mum shows up and helps him run away to join the long patrol

This was yet another great book by Brian Jacques!!!!!! It wasn't as long as his other book, so the characters' developments weren't as detailed. However I really enjoyed reading about Redwall during its most perilous time of all. I'd recommend that you read all of BJ's books before this because if you didn't, it would seem awful. Eulaliaeulaliaeulalia! Redwall!END

the long patrol is ok. i enjoyed Damug Warfang, but his death was a let down. the badger lord in this book was a bit weird if you ask me. i did though, enjoy the food and the relationship with Tammo and Pasque. if you want to try this book, then be my guest. it was my first Redwall, it was good enough for me to read the others.

I never really liked the badger lords and hares and in this book they were too "perilous" It was one of the good-bad books in the series but some parts were good and realistic. I guess I recomend it to other readers but it is kind of a dissapointment to longtime Redwall fans.

Tammello is a young hare who wants to join the Long Patrol. Meanwhile Lady Cregga Rose Eyes and the hares of Salamandastron have just beat the Rapscallions. The Rapscallions are now headed to Redwall where the South Wall has collapsed. Lady Cregga takes a troup of hares and heads for Redwall. Tammo joins a Long Patrol unit headed for Redwall. The Redwallers and Tammo's Long Patrol unit meet at a hill with the Rapscallions. Just when the Red wallers think they are goners Lady Cregga and the hares arrive and all is saved. I did not like this as well as his other books. I thought there was less depth to it and not as much of what makes his books so delightfull!!

If you like the redwall series you will LOVE this book. Tammo is an unlikely hero in the begining but once he meet Russa well things can change is all I have to say. If you read this carefully you can see that this maby be the last one in the series.

This was my personal favorite Redwall book. The hares are absolutely hilarious! Lady Cregga Rose Eyes sounds rather scary, but she's all right when the bloodwrath is not upon her. Tammo is an excellent character who many people can relate to. The first review is someone who just isn't into fantasy as much. By the way, if you don't like it when you hear about small mammals fighting in the forest with swords, javelins, and maces, than definetly do not read this book. If you do than read this book, it's totally awesome, doncha know!

A great book by Brian Jaques it has all the aspects to keep you reading. In it a young hare Tamello De Fformello Tussock (Tammo)

is a determined hare trying to get into the long Patrol with the most Perilous hares ever. His father ofcourse won't let him but his mother tells him to run away with her old friend Russa NoDrey a squirrel. She takes him to Redwall an abbey at wich the Long Patrol goes to alot. Yet the Abbey is unsafe the Rapscallions lead by Damug Warfang are going to attack. Over in Salamndastron The badger lord Lady Cregga Rose Eyes hears of it and sends aid. Do they win find out.I also beleive he should right a sequel.

I love the Redwall series, and I mean that I love every book in it. This one, however, is my favorite. I think that the hares are my favorite group of characaters in Jacques' books and since this book centered around the elite fighting unit known as The Long Patrol, it makes sense that this is my favorite. You can't help but fall in love with Tammo and Russa as they make their way to Redwall and it's famed fare. And Damug Warfang is one of those villains that you just love to hate. Redwall fan or not, this book is totally great!

This book was exciting because it had a lot of action. It's about a Hare named Tammo who wants to join the Long Patrol who protect the inhabitants of Mossflower from the evil GreatRat, Damung Warfang and his army of Rapscallions. I liked this book because the battles were intense and I never knew what was going to happen next or who was going to die. My favorite character was Shad the Gatekeeper, an otter who was funny at times but also extremely brave when called upon to do battle. I would recommend the Redwall series to people of all ages.

The Long Patrol is full of swashbuckling adventure and sword clanging. Even so, it doesn't loose the clever plot. The animal characters have just as much depth as people. Impossible to put this one down!

TLP is a well written book for Redwall fans. However, there are too many unlikely won battles where ten hares beat fifty villains. Jaques' books are beginning to be slightly repetative plot wise, and I miss the element of suprise. This is one of my least favorite of the series (which are, in order, Mattimeo, Redwall, Martin the Warrior, Mariel, The Bellmaker, Salmandastrom,Pearls of Lutra, Mossflower, The Outcast, and TLP)However, for a fan, this is an enjoyable book, and the characters, while not incredible intersting are funny and likeable.

The Long Patrol was a very exciting book. I thought it was intresting because all the animals talk. Its strange the way the author made the animal's lives like ours(without modern technology). The beggining is a bit confusing because theres about four different settings and they keep skipping back and forth. Near the end it makes a lot more sense. I would probably recommend this book to teenagers or older people. Its hard to read because the animals talk in old English.

I think the book is entertaining. It is full of action and is pretty exciting. It is funny, and sad which makes you feel like you're inside the book with all the characters, and feeling the same as they are. I think it's really a nice book to read or if little have it read to you. I would really recommend this book.
I've read at least five of this series and this is one of the best. It's not really important to read the books in order.

I have been a huge fan of Brian Jacques, and I believe that this is his greatest. I have read all of the other books including the new book "Marlfox."
He spins this yarn wonderfully as he brings his animal world to life. This should be a book read by all children and adults. Good job Brian.

Evil is afoot in Mossflower, a vermain horde, the Rapscallions, plan to take over Redwall! And there is no abbot or abbess to mantain order in Redwall. There only hope at survival is a young hare named Tammo and the perilous hares of the Long Patrol. If you are looking for a good book then I reccomend The Long Patrol, and all of the other Redwall books, they are the best!

The Long Patrol was my fave redwall novel. I've read it at least 5 times. I guess it's more appealing than the other redwall novels because it has a happy, romantic ending (I really liked Martin the warrior because it had some romance laced in but the ending was, well I don't want to give it away so I'll say it was "inconclusive") I recommend it to grades 4 or 5 (depending on your reading level) or up

First off i want to say I am a hard critic of the Redwall series because I believe they are becoming very repetitive. This book however is a breath of fresh air, differnt from all the rest. This is easily his best in my book, along with Martin the Warrior and The Bellmaker.

My grandson who is in the fifth grade was assigned this book to read. Although a straight A student, he found it most difficult to read. I have two masters degrees and found this book to be one of the most difficult for children to read. A book like this can certainly cause students not to want to read at all. The dilect was most diffficult to follow. While the story of animals is appealing to children, the dialect is much too hard and simple names would make the story just as interesting. I realize that I am in the minority with the other reviewers but this is my honest opinion.
