I really enjoyed reading this book. A lot of times I just skim fiction because there isn't much there. Paid attention to this one and when I finished wanted to find out more about characters because writer had made them believable and likable.

I found this book to be disturbing and depressing. It kept my interest, because I'm always in hopes that there will be some redeeming action in the end, but this one didn't seem to resolve anything for me. I read for entertainment, and this isn't the type of book I would choose.

This is a story about survival and acceptance of one's own uniqueness. A struggle to define oneself rather than be defined by life`s events. Rachel struggles to find exactly where she fits in the world...is she Black, Danish... We are asked the question "If someone does something bad are they bad? Do we still love them?"

Very heavy topic I chose to read the book because I have biracial grandchildren. I don't think the story gave me additional insight but it did open a door of communication. Sad. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is easily depressed.

The story has a riveting premise, the makings of a good mystery. It develops well as we follow a classic "coming of age" plot that has the extra twist of "discovery of cultural identity". Just when it all seems headed toward a resolution, though, the author runs out of ink. She needed about two more chapters to complete her development of the two main characters and bring their search to some sort of close. I was left at the end with an unsatisfying "Oh" in my mouth.

Intrigued by some of the rave reviews I ordered this book sample and promptly ordered the book itself. I thought the plot had a strong beginning and the makings of a great mystery told thru the perspective of a compelling main character. Unfortuantely, as the story progresses the reader is found questioning the motives of the characters and also some implausible circumstances and coincidences that unfold. The ending was somewhat disconnected and abrupt.

Loved this book. Written not only through the eyes of a young biracial girl but the eyes of her Danish mother who was never exposed to racism and her inability to comprehend racism and her need to protect her children

This book was entertaining and thought provoking . The characters were well developed and explored the challenges of (young) people finding themselves. I did not want the story to end and would recommend it to anyone.

Again, I start to expect the same characters and would like to read about this period from a different perspective. Overall, however, this is not the main point and this author knows how to pull a reader in from the first paragraph.

The book was an interesting account of a biracial family and how one young girl dealt with the problems. It was a little hard for me to stay interested in the beginning but later it picked up interest and was worth the read.

The character development and plot were well defined and kept my interest througout the book. I enjoyed being shocked by the events from time to time. The ending seemed a little abrupt, but this was not a big problem for me. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys psychological studies exposing the nature of humans.

I really enjoyed this special book. It grabbed my interest in the first few pages. The author describes places and characters in the book with a flair for imagery and the beauty of family.
This book is the kind of read you put on your pjs and some warm socks. Grap a blanket and a hot cup of tea and snuggle on your most favorite couch in front of the fireplace! I truly liked this book and am going to keep an eye out for this author! She truly deserved the awards this book received.

Easy read. I thought the story somewhat unique compared with others. Definitely felt for the lead character, and the realities she has to face. There are characters I wish I could follow further. Very tragic as well.

This is a beautiful book. The story of Rachel, the daughter of a Danish woman and an African-American man who moves to Portland to live with her paternal grandmother following a family tragedy, Heidi Durrow's novel is both moving and hopeful. The story is told from Rachel's viewpoint as well as those of a young neighbor who witnessed the incident and her mother's boss, who tries to figure out why what happened did happen.

Durrow did a terrific job creating two of her main characters, Rachel and Jamie/Brick. I felt completely invested in their struggles and their victories, and truthfully felt like I could have read another 100-200 more pages about both of them. And as the full story of the tragedy unfolded, it really hit me hard. If I had any criticism of the book, it's that I felt as if some of the supporting characters were drawn a little stereotypically, so I really didn't enjoy the times when they were the focus of the story. On the whole, however, this book shows that Heidi Durrow is a writer with tremendous promise, and I look forward to seeing what she creates in the future.
