Rachel is an incredible woman and her strength and character depicted beautifully throughout the book. This book had me in tears, hysterically laughing and enthralled. I couldn't put it down. Its heartbreaking what has happened to the girls Rachel describes but amazing to see the work GEMS does to help.

What an important issue for people to hear about! The author both shows you the horrific realities of abuse and commercial sex and the peer and strength of the children and woman who survive these circumstances. I enjoyed her detailed and vulnerable writing style.

The author is articulate, insightful, and compassionate. Her book is a superb resource for those desiring to develop outreach programs or aftercare programs. This is the best book on the subject of sex trafficking that I have read thus far. I gained much understanding from the author's personal experiences and commentary on her efforts to assist others.

As one who is called to fight trafficking, it was a great read. It gives you insight into the mind of the survivors, and was a great breakdown of how to effectively help and understand the factors that make it occur.

I have never known anything about "the life" these girls lived. I have never known the desperation, degradation or manipulation that was (or is) their life. Rachel Lloyd has written a powerful story that needs to be told.

Highly recommended! Not only does Rachel help us know what the life is like, she helps us understand the full effects and the hope for healing & victory. Girls are NOT for sale & slavery was outlawed by Abe Lincoln. Abolistionists arise!!!

With clear language, this book sheds a needed light on the sexual exploitation of girls and women in this country and their additional victimization by the agencies that are supposed to protect and assist them.

Rachel Lloyd challenges the way we perceive commercially sexually exploited youth the way Frederick Douglass challenged the way African Americans were viewed in the antebellum US.

Douglass wrote: "You have seen how a man was made a slave; you shall see how a slave was made a man."

Lloyd writes plainly, yet profoundly how young girls, who were stripped of their humanity struggle to reclaim their humanity (in their own eyes as well as the eyes of society). Lloyd is vulnerable with the readers as well as with the girls she works with through GEMS.

She asks us to remove the blinders and misconceptions of commercially sexually exploited youth and really work for change. To not only abolish this modern day form of slavery, but to see ourselves in these girls.

This book was completely eye opening and mind changing. I will never look at the issue of human trafficking the same again. A challenging and sometimes uncomfortable read, but totally worth it. I learned a lot about myself just in reflecting on this book. I never buy books, but this is one to buy and pass on to friends when you finish.

This book brings a more personal attention to the horrific crime of human sex trafficking in the US - particularly among underage girls. Everyone should understand the severity of this issue here in the US.

This book is captivating, and it details and explains the atrocities of the issue of the commercial sexual exploitation of children, especially United States citizens in New York City, in way that I have never heard before. It is absolutely a must read.

This is a much needed, well-written memoir and expose. So many people in our culture have no idea that the trafficking and sexual trade of children is going on right under their noses. More attention needs to be paid to this shameful aspect of our society.

Highly recommended reading, especially for Law Enforcement, policy makers, victims, social workers and every man who may need some insight into the ways our actions affect girls who will become women.

I never write reviews but wanted to for this one. This is by far one of the best books I have ever read. I never think about these things ... abuse, exploitation. Rachel puts real faces to it and I can see the victimization where I never really thought about it before. She is making a difference. Thank you Rachel! Keep up the good work!
