The central character (a 16 year-old girl) is delightful. The concept of the aliens is quite original. The denoument is a little facile at one point, but by then we are happy to have an ending. It does have zombies (unfortunately), but they are not the brain-eating TV zombies and there is a happy ending for them.

There must be hundreds of spaceship landing stories, but none like this. Told from the perspective a precocious teenage girl this story is a delightful read. Great imagination. Well drafted characters and a convoluted plot. Even if you are tired of the whole genre, you will love this tale.

I really enjoyed this book. Gene Doucette is a new author for me. I was afraid I would be disappointed with the ending because I couldn't see where he could go but was so pleased with it I ordered the sequel.

Extremely interesting and just different enough to keep you guessing. Really enjoy Gene Doucette's writing. I loved the characters and looking forward to more of his work. Would highly recommend for a fun read.

Many might not remember Clifford Simak, But in his time was a leader in Sci-Fi. Most of you know of Stephen King of scary tales that sometimes makes you laugh and have to turn the page. Nothing predictable here. Characters well developed. Story has twists and turns. Fell in love with the main character and became one of her cheerleaders. Was not disappointed. Take your time to truly read with no preconceptions. Fun. Enjoy.

I really enjoyed "The Spaceship Next Door". It was a very realistic blossoming of what might just happen one day. There are a .lot of unexpected twists throughout the book but the main character is realistically drawn out and a really fun person. I certainly hope there is a follow up novel.

Can't believe the hackneyed plot device the author relies on, but discussing it will involve a spoiler, so:

**SPOILER ALERT**

It's not much of a spoiler because it shows up about a third of the way into the book, but nevertheless:

**SPOILER ALERT**

**SPOILER ALERT**

Zombies? Really?? This is the most over-used, unimaginative plot-crutch of the 21st Century. Very disappointing. It's too bad because this book had good writing, excellent and realistic characters and an intriguing story-line: an alien spacecraft lands outside of town and then does nothing for a couple years. But then the graves open up and . . . zombies. Yawn. A shame to ruin an otherwise good book with such a lack of imagination.

This is truly an unusual story, and has some real weirdness going for it. Still a good book with humor, zombies and a smart 16 year old girl. I enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. Try it, have fun.

Gene is a very intelligent and humorous author. His insight is extraordinarily dead on with most things, whether true or fiction. While he entertains, he doesn't insult the intelligence of his readers, but takes them along on a super, original, story. Love everything he has ever written.

It started out good with a fresh premise but about 1/2 into it, it started to lose my interest. Not that is was not good, it just got too over written, I guess. The final outcome was too far fetched and was not well explained. The twist near the end of the book was good.

Totally a good read that is interesting, lots of fun, excitement, that avoids cliche`. The story is well plotted (is that a word?) and the characters and dialog are excellent. It is a stand alone book and is well ended.

So buy it, read it and enjoy.

This is a fun, inventive, and involving story that I couldn't put towards the end. Annie is a wonderful, witty, and intelligent character I was sorry to say goodbye to. My only criticism is that the end was a little too rushed, and I'd like to have known more - and known Annie for longer.

This story grabbed me at the very beginning and never let go. It may be intended as a book for teens, but it's clever enough to appeal to all ages, and its heroine, 16-year-old Annie, is a breath of fresh air, not to mention the book's fresh take on all things alien.

A very well-written and interesting book. The plot offered some new twists, and I particularly liked the main character--a funny, perceptive, very intelligent, wise-cracking 16 year old-going on 35 girl. A book with the heart that most SF these days lacks.

This is a very entertaining read that held my attention from the start. It also helps that it has one of the more unique plot lines that I've come across lately. My only gripe is that the author has a tendency to go off on little tangents occasionally but even those are entertaining and still manage to contribute to the main story.

Much like the book itself, I'm finding it difficult to know where to start with this review. I purchased The Spaceship Next Door within hours of its release, but it then sat unread for weeks in my kindle library. I knew without a doubt that I would enjoy it since Doucette's writing is always engaging. It was just that the subject matter was different enough from what I normally read that I lacked that initial drive to start the book.
More fool me.
The Spaceship Next Door gave me one hell of a sleepless night. I began reading it in the evening, intending to check out a few chapters before bed. I finished it at 3 am. I truly don't want to give any of the plot away, even by accident, as every twist and turn was as entertaining as it was unexpected. The characters were all so vivid and engaging, fitting perfectly into the world of the story. And the protagonist, Annie, is easily one of the more quick-witted and entertaining characters that I have read in a long while.
What I will say though, is that the ending was perfect. Very rarely you come across an ending that both leaves you wanting more but at the same time satisfies you completely. To me that is the mark of an excellent story and Gene Doucette has delivered.

Started off a little slow but finally got spaceship"shippie"..fun reading a story with a female teen heroine.. some zombie effects which I of course loved..some nice twists on the characters..a little wordy toward the end but a good ending.

A very unusual plot line; admirable, endearing characters and a very exciting read. AND an actual spaceship...grin! I hope Mr Doucette revisits these characters. He has left me wanting more. I think you'll like it as much as I.

Almost a teen read but entertainingly adult. I appreciated the PG storyline. Too many authors think they have to dwell on the dark or perverse ways of telling their stories. I was engaged from the first chapter to the end.

Refreshing different take on alien contact, great characters, good writing, hard to stop reading. Probably not a plausible scenario, but a fun read and found myself liking and rooting for the main character.

A very interesting novel. Annie was quite entertaining especially if you knew someone like her. Annie is the main character and all the rest flow through her. I would recommend this book to everyone who wants to relax with an easy flowing, entertaining novel. It might even be educational. Who knows when a tin can might fall out of the sky next to your town.

I really enjoyed the book. The aliens were completely different to what you oils expect and it was handle well.

Sims if the descriptions of the town and historical facts were a bit long winded but just skip those and enjoy the book.

I loved his writing style and his sense of humor. First half of the book was very good. Unique. Second half fell off a bit, SciFi credibility was stretched too far. His ability to suspended disbelief faltered. I enjoyed the read, but the start built up more expectations than the conclusion could deliver.

Non stop fun filled ride - with pleasant company. I really enjoyed the story, the writing and all the unique characters. Of course Annie is my favorite. I must look up more of this author's stuff. Enjoy
