DeMille is a great writer in my opinion. He develops the story at a steady pace and throws in some plot twists to keep things interesting. A fast read as he keeps you wanting to find out what happens next.

I found the book to be fascinating and depressing, and I believe everyone in the US should read it. I realize it is fiction, but also believe there is much truth about a war that so severely divided this country and permanently scarred so many men and women who probably to this day have ambivilant feelings about the value of their service.

Outstanding story focused on a very difficult issue. Questioning the actions and motivation of the principal character throughout the novel made it a lot more real and interseting. Classic take away: "All war stories are bulls***" - - - menaing to me that they are so out of context of our everyday lives that they cannot be heard and judged by the same standards of those thing we are familiar with.

If you felt uncomfortable with what happened with Calli and at Mia Lai*(?) you need to read this book. If you were in Vietnam during the conflict, you will probably enjoy this book.

On my word of honor I really admired this excellent book. It was one of those books that got you in a fix, hurry up and read, because it is so good and don't gobble it because it is so good. Good story, good development of the characters. I also loved "Up Country" because both of these books give us a picture of that strange place called Viet Nam. I have read most of DeMille's writings and this one was very well done and, to me a treasure.

A great story that is well told. His main character has the same attributes of several in his more recent works, in that he is somewhat irreverent and a bit of a smartass. Difficult to put down the closer to the end I got. I have enjoyed all of his newer books and am starting on his early stuff.

I have been a huge fan of DeMille since discovering John Corey and Plum Island. This is my first venture into his earlier books and I am as impressed with them as anything else he has written. Can't wait to start another. Any suggestions?

True to DeMille . . . he builds a great story that takes unexpected turns that leaves you wondering "how is this all going to end up?" Characters to either love or hate, intrigue, and and unpredictable ending. A great read and hard to put down.

Suspenseful! Wonderfully written. Kept the reader engaged and looking forward to every next page. The story was riveting, but also included the humor present in a DeMille novel. The emotional ending was captivating and perfect.

Wow!!! A few of the earlier DeMille books got by me until now, and what a great surprise! One of his best in every way! A must for DeMille fans ,and for everyone interested in a different approach to the Vietnam novel. This is Not a war story but a human one!!!

This book is typical of DeMille's angst-ridden, snappy dialog (at least with the protagonist) stories that seem to go on and on. The Gate House was similar and even the John Corey series was filled with sarcastic, seemingly introspective dialog--again by the main characters. Gets kind of tiring to be honest.

DeMille outdid himself in crafting this story. It held my attention and I thoroughly enjoyed the book from beginning to end. It never slowed down in my estimation and it was so well written that I could not put it down.

DeMille writes a gut honest story of war that can transport itself from one war to another. Easy to judge a war from our living room but this one has an embedded dimension that most of us will never see. LESSON: No one really survives.

I thought this was a typical Nelson DeMille story. It appealed to my strong belief that what occurs in war should stay between those we send to do the fighting. That is what the officer subject to the court marshall demonstrated. Unless there is someone at the top of the chain of command responsible, it is my opinion that those who are on the front line should not be subject to the second guessing that is so prevalent today and during the Viet Nam war.

This story was all about that belief.

I got started with Nelson DeMille's books with The Gold Coast and The Gate House, then went through every one of his I could find. This Vietnam-War-and-repercussions-from-it book is a well-written story, as are all of his, and while the edition I bought is a good 2 1/2 inches thick, which people commented on when I carried it to doctor visits and other shopping trips, it was a most enjoyable read. It doesn't have the humor I enjoyed in his later books, but it's more than well worth reading.

This is a very thought provoking book. I was conflicted about the events and the characters. It was a long book but overall I would recommend it to others. I also very much enjoyed the Panther and Up Country.
